This is another course that diploma candidates must take Students have two 45-minute lessons of TOK per (5 day) week The course is described as “an interdisciplinary requirement

intended to stimulate critical reflection on the knowledge and experience gained inside and outside the classroom. The course challenges students to question the bases of knowledge, to be aware of subjective and ideological biases and to develop the ability to analyse evidence”

There is no exam in TOK but the students write essays and a short presentation on which they are graded

JAIN INTERNATIONAL RESIDENTIAL SCHOOL, IBDP - NPM 18

Page 19: WARM WELCOME TO ALL

Each diploma candidate writes an “Extended Essay’ which is a 4,000 word research essay

The students choose a subject in which they have a particular interest and then narrow it down to a specific research question.

Work should begin in the latter part of the Grade 11 year. The first draft is due in October of Grade 12 so it is very strongly recommended that a great deal of work is done over the summer between Grade 11 and Grade 12.

All the Extended Essays are sent away to be marked by IB examiners

CAS stands for Creativity, Action and Service

It provides balance to the academic content of the Diploma

All students must participate in activities in each of the three areas

Satisfactory participation is essential for the IB Diploma or Certificates

EXAMS – In most courses, about 80% of the assessment is based on final exams which are held in May of the Grade 12 year.

‘Mock exams’ are held in February when we try to simulate the final examinations as closely as possible.

The real exams in May are all sent off to be marked by IB examiners.

Page 22: WARM WELCOME TO ALL

INTERNAL ASSESSMENT – Most IB courses have an element of ‘assessed coursework’. This usually counts for at least 20% of the final grade.

The coursework is graded internally by teachers and then samples are sent to the IB for ‘moderation’.

Page 23: WARM WELCOME TO ALL

INTERNAL ASSESSMENT –A warning! “the candidate not providing work by

the internal school deadline… is unacceptable”. (IBO, HoP)

“No work for internal assessment… will result in no grade being awarded for the subject concerned”.

Meet the deadlines!

Page 24: WARM WELCOME TO ALL

Students take six courses and receive a final grade out of 7 (based on examinations + internal assessment) for each. This gives a total of 42 possible ‘points’

Students are also assessed on their Extended Essay and TOK and for these combined, can earn another 3 points.

Therefore, the maximum total available for the IB diploma is 45 points

JAIN INTERNATIONAL RESIDENTIAL SCHOOL, IBDP - NPM 24

Page 25: WARM WELCOME TO ALL

A total of 24 points is required for a Diploma to be awarded.

In addition, students must score at least 12 points in their three Higher level subjects (with no grade 2)….

… and at least 9 points in their three Standard level subjects (and not more that one grade 2).
