As many of you are already aware our Secretary, Trish Blundell, is ill and has had to

step down from secretarial duties. Our thoughts are with Trish and we look forward

to seeing her back at the Club in the future. My sincere thanks to Glenys Barnes and

Cheryl Yeoh who have taken on these duties. It is very much appreciated.

My thanks to all the members who worked on our stall at the Moonee Valley

Festival. You certainly helped to promote what the Club and responsible dog

ownership is all about. It was lovely to see the dogs interacting with so many

members of the general public.

Remember summer training times are currently in operation. We will revert to winter

times the Sunday after Easter. (No training Easter Sunday) Enjoy your training for

Moonee Valley Festival

Over the years, the Club has had a Stall at the Moonee Valley Festival to promote the club and to give members of the general public the opportunity to interact with our dogs. This year was no exception.

Many people made enquiries about joining the club and training their dog. Others simply took the opportunity to come and talk to the members who were manning the stall and to meet many of our well behaved canine members.

The club sincerely thanks those members who attended on the day, without your assistance these meet and greet days would not be successful.

We are really enjoying the attention

Tummy rubs are great.

NEW Summer Class Times

Classes from 1 February will start at 9a.m. until the end of daylight saving time to avoid

the hot late-morning sun.

18 February 2015, The Canberra Times

Puppy farms and intensive breeding of domestic animals will be banned under new legislation to be introduced to the Legislative Assembly on Thursday.

The new protections for animals forced to breed for the pet market is designed to stop abuses similar to those seen in New South Wales and Victoria in recent years and follows ACT laws enacted in October 2013 which established fines of as much as $11,000 for breaches of a code of practice.

Territory and Municipal Services Minister Shane Rattenbury said his bill was the second element of animal protections included in the governance agreement he signed with Labour to form government after the 2012 election.

Mr Rattenbury said intensive pet breeding operations saw dogs and cats treated as "money-making machines, placing the operator's profit above their animal's health and welfare."

"Life for a female dog or cat in an intensive breeding facility is unimaginable. Animals are often permanently housed in empty pens, deprived of social interaction, exercise and responsible health care for their entire lives.

In an effort to increase profits for the operators, female dogs and cats are continually impregnated and bred as often as possible, sometimes every time that they go into heat."

The intensive breeding of female dogs and cats will become a criminal offence in the territory with tough new penalties for anyone convicted of exploiting animals for the pet market.

New offences, including recklessly allowing a dog or cat to breed contrary to declared standards including on frequency, are expected to be declared following advice from an expert committee.

Mr Rattenbury said a higher offence of intentionally allowing breeding for profit or commercial gain against standards will be created. A code of practice on the breeding and selling of dogs or cats with hereditary defects will also be declared.

A new licensing scheme for dog and cat breeders will be established.

"The scheme has been through extensive industry consultation to ensure that it is simple and resource-effective for breeders," Mr Rattenbury said.

The proposed law has the backing of the ACT RSPCA and campaigners involved in the anti-puppy farm movement Oscar's Law. Campaigners have sought political action on intensive breeding of dogs and cats in a number of Australian jurisdictions.

Oscar's Law campaign founder Debra Tranter welcomed the moves.

"It's a great step forward for the ACT. The tougher legislation in Victoria means a lot of puppy farms are looking to relocate which is why it’s so good the ACT has been quick off the mark in introducing this before parliament," she said.

"Any new legislation is keeping the spotlight on this issue, keeping the pressure on puppy farms and making a difference."

After campaigning since 1993, Ms Tranter said Australian jurisdictions were moving more quickly. She is currently lobbying the New South Wales government to ban puppy and kitten farming.

The ACT's first enforceable Animal Sales Code came into force in late 2013, applying to pet shops, breeders and anyone selling animals as pets.

The code requires hygienic accommodation to meet the needs of animals and can be enforced by RSPCA officers, police and TAMS officials.

It also covers some produce animals, including backyard poultry in the ACT, as well as live animals sold in restaurants and markets such as fish.

5 Tech Tools For Pet Lovers

As with human activity trackers, you can set goals and easily view activity in a sleek dashboard. If your dog exhibits any behavioral changes, Whistle can alert you so you can check it out. Another great feature? The ability to auto-generate reports for your vet.

Play With Your Pet Via Smartphone

Petcube, currently a Kickstarter project that looks to have an excellent chance of reaching its funding goal, consists of three awesome components: a wide-angle HD camera, a microphone and speakers and, of course, a laser pointer. This means that while the cat—in this case, the human, meaning you—is away, the mice (your cats or dogs) will play. So will the cat. I mean, you. Unlike that previous paragraph, the Petcube makes a lot of sense. I'm always curious what my pets do when I’m gone. Now I can see for myself and share the best photos and videos of my pet’s shenanigans online.

Talk To And Reward Your Pet Via Smartphone

PetziConnect, which blew past its own crowdfunding goal on Indiegogo, has many similarities to the Petcube. It can take HD photos and videos of your animals and it will let you have a conversation (inasmuch as that is possible) with your pet via two-way audio.

The biggest difference here is that the PetziConnect forgoes a laser pointer for a treat dispenser. Additionally, the PetziConnect plugs directly into a wall outlet, so it isn’t as mobile as the Petcube. Which one is the best fit for you may depend on what excites your pet the most: chasing a red dot or receiving a treat.

Digital Pet ID Tags

If you are still using a regular old “dumb” pet tag, it’s time to get with the times. The PetHub embeds a QR code on the back of a normal metal engraved dog tag that others can scan should they find your lost pet.

Here’s what’s cool: when a person scans your pet’s tag with their phone, it will display your pet's profile and information—plus, and this is the great part, it'll immediately notify you, too. Perhaps this will help cut down on pet piracy (finding someone’s lost pet and not returning it). I mean, who can resist scanning a QR code on a pet tag to see what you might learn?

Find An Awesome Dog Sitter Near You

DogVacay is like Airbnb, but for dogs. Next time you leave town and need someone to watch your pooch for awhile, don’t just drop Fido off at the nearest kennel. Instead, browse hosts online, read reviews, pick the perfect place, schedule it andhit the road with peace of mind.

That last part is important, and DogVacay takes it seriously by hand-approving all sitters (because even humans need to get vetted) and offering comprehensive protection. Additionally, each host must pass an online training course, for what it's worth. Does your usual boarding location offer a 100% guarantee?

Remember the robot that walks a bunch of dogs in the movie I, Robot? How awesome would that be—for both the owner and the dogs? I mean, we do have iOS apps for animals now, but Hollywood has trained me to expect more.

Just because dog-walking robots don’t yet exist, there’s no reason pets should be underdogs when it comes to technology. Naturally, I went looking for some cool pet tech and doggonit, I found some! (Now, if only iRobot made a Roomba-like automatic pooper scooper.)

A Fitness Tracker For Your Dog

For humans, there’s Fitbit. For dogs, there’s Whistle, a sleek fitness monitor that attaches to your canine’s collar.Whistle tracks activities like walks, playtime, sleep and even swims (yes, it’s waterproof). Whistle can even track who your dog has been hanging out with (friends or family, for instance).

Congratulations to all the handlers and dogs who have passed into the next class.

Keep up your regular training and you will be amazed at how quickly you will progress through

the classes. If you experience difficulty with a particular exercise speak to your Instructor. They will be only too happy to assist you in overcoming the problem or they will direct you to someone who will be able to give you advice.

Rally O

What is Rally O?

Rally O is a new dog sport based on traditional Obedience but carried out in a more relaxed format. In

Rally participants are able to talk to their dogs, you can use as much verbal praise and petting as you wish.

As a result handlers and dogs really enjoy the activity. The dogs are learning many skills that can be

applied to everyday activities with your dog.

It is seen as a great way to introduce dogs to participating in traditional Obedience Trials. It is a great way

for dogs of all ages and abilities to begin competing. It is a great way for shy or timid dogs to gain

experience as they do not have to undergo examination by a judge. The fact that you can continually

praise your dogs also helps overcome their anxiety.

The handler and dog work their way around a course that consists of numbered signs with instructions on

them that let the participants know what they have to do. There are three levels for dogs and handlers to

compete in.

Novice is the first level and the dog works on lead and the exercises the dog is required to complete are

reasonably simple. The next two levels are Advanced and Excellent. In these levels the dogs are required

to work off lead and the exercises they must complete include jumps and more difficult exercises

including ignoring food or toys. In the Excellent class there is a long stay on lead.

At each level the dog and handler start with 100 points and points are deducted for any mistakes made,

having a tight lead or not completing an exercise correctly. At competition level the team is timed and the

fastest team with the most points is declared the winner. Each level requires three passes before the dog

can move to the next level of competition. The rally courses are designed by the judge and at each trial

you enter the course will be different. Before the competition starts handlers walk the course to see what

exercises are required for the particular course.

You can download a copy of the signs used so that you can start teaching your dog what they need to

learn to compete in this discipline. The Club offers you the opportunity to become involved in Rally by

practising various courses. The Rally ring is set up on the first and third Sunday of the month. It is

recommended that dogs be in Class Three before you start using the ring.

Northern Obedience Dog

Club is a non-profit

organisation staffed by

volunteers dedicated to

promoting the training and

understanding of the dog, so

that it can be accepted as a true

companion in our urban society.

The Club trains people to train their dogs to

be obedient, companionable and useful.

The club provides you with the opportunity

to train your dog, and the fact that our

club and others like us exist, show how

much interest in dog training as a hobby

has increased. Training for most people

can be a hobby that is enjoyed by both

dog and owner.

See our website for more details.
