March 14, 2011Page 15“Back in the early 1960s,

when I was growing up, there was a silly pop song called “What Did Washington Say When He Crossed the Delaware?” Sung to the tarantella beat of an Italian wedding song, the answer went something like “Martha, Martha, there’ll be no pizza tonight.”

Of course, these lyrics were absurd; everybody knew Washington ate only cherry pie.

On that December night in 1776, George might have told himself that this raid on an enemy camp in Trenton, New Jersey, better work.”

Text-to-World ConnectionThis passage reminds me

of George Washington’s troops’ famous boat ride across the Delaware River on Christmas night 1776. It was a risky maneuver during the Revolutionary War. In that war, the former colonies of Britain declared independence from Britain, sparking a war. The ride across the Delaware was commemorated by artist Emanuel Leutze’s painting “Washington Crossing the Delaware.” While the painting has inaccuracies, it did make Washington look like a true hero.

Keep in mind that you should have, on average, four responses per book. If you do this for your five books for cycle 5, you will have written all 20 responses. Mr. Loeb will collect your journal each Friday to make sure you are on track with yourresponses - he is looking for four responses per week, starting this week!

Once you are finished with the book ...

Newsfeed: My book, Don't Know Much About History, walks the reader through time and space. The book brings history alive with facts and stories about real people that you didn't know. For example, it tells the story of Rosa Parks and how her arrest on a public bus in Alabama helped change civil rights in America. The book makes you think about the world around you.

Like or Dislike: This is a fascinating book that I recommend everyone reads, however, it shouldn't be read from front to back like a typical book. It should be read like a dictionary - you should find the particular passages which you find most interesting.

Friending:

STEPS FOR INDEPENDENT READING1. Select an independent reading book.

2. Complete cover page for book.

3. Read independently and silently.

4. Complete a left and a right entry.

Lesson Goal: We will be able to monitor our progress toward our class work, final, homework, and behavior goals.
