SINNERS RESPONDJonah 1:8 Then they said to him, “Tell us on whose account this evil has

come upon us. What is your occupation? And where do you

come from? What is your country? And of what people are you?” 9 And he said to them, “I am a Hebrew, and I fear the LORD, the God of

heaven, who made the sea and the dry land.” 10 Then the men were

exceedingly afraid and said to him, “What is this that you have done!”

For the men knew that he was fleeing from the presence of the

LORD, because he had told them.

SINNERS RESPOND

Deuteronomy 6:1 “Now this is the commandment—the statutes and

the rules—that the LORD your God commanded me to teach you, that

you may do them in the land to which you are going over, to

possess it, 2 that you may fear the LORD your God, you and your son and your son’s son, by keeping all

his statutes and his commandments, which I command you, all the days of your life, and

that your days may be long.”

SINNERS RESPOND

Deuteronomy 6:13 It is the LORD your God you shall fear. Him you shall serve and by his name you shall swear.

14 You shall not go after other gods, the gods of the peoples who are around you— 15 for the LORD

your God in your midst is a jealous God—lest the anger of the LORD your God be kindled against you, and he destroy you from off the

face of the earth.

SINNERS RESPOND“Fear in the biblical sense includes

being afraid of someone, but it extends to holding someone in

awe, being controlled or mastered by someone, worshipping

someone, putting your trust in someone, or needing someone.

The fear of man can be summarized this way: We replace

God with people. Instead of a biblically guided fear of the Lord,

we fear others. . . . When we are in our teens, it is called ‘peer

pressure.’ “When we are older, it is called ‘people-pleasing.’ Recently, it has been called ‘codependency.’” Ed Welch
