Dear Mustang Families,
I want to begin by saying “Congratulations!” to our Honor Roll students. This quarter we had 208 students make Honor Roll with
a 3.5 GPA or higher. What an incredible group of hard working kids! I am very proud of all of them.
I also want to say a special “thanks” to our librarian, Daphne Bethel, and all our 7th Grade Language Arts teachers for organizing
this year’s African American poetry reading. All 7th grade students heard poetry from talented writers such as Eloise Greenfield
and Langston Hughes. They learned how those authors’ life experiences affected the lens from which they saw the world, and,
subsequently, how it affected their writing. It was a wonderful and educational event for everyone.
The next thing I want to make sure that you are aware of is that OAKS state testing begins in April and will extend through the end
of May. These tests are designed to measure the school’s effectiveness in helping our students master grade-level standards in
reading and math. They also help us know when students are in need of more intensive interventions. During testing weeks, it is
extremely important that your child gets enough rest and eats healthy meals, especially at breakfast. It is also important that your
child not be absent during his/her assigned testing weeks. Please communicate directly with your child’s Language Arts and Math
teachers if you have questions about the testing schedule.
Oregon state law requires all districts to inform parents that a form is available from the Oregon Department of Education that
provides the opportunity to opt your child out of the OAKS/Smarter Balanced assessments. The form must be filed annually and is
available in 8 languages. Should you choose to opt your child out of the exam, please fill out the form found on the website
http://www.reynolds.k12.or.us/district/2016-17-parent-exemption-guidelines and submit it to the District Testing Coordinator. The
form must be turned in prior to your student beginning the test. If the form is received after your student begins testing, he/she
will not be required to finish the exam. However, the state still requires that all incomplete tests be counted and scored.
Finally, the most important thing you will need to know this month is that Spring Conferences are quickly approaching. They will
take place on Thursday, March 15, and Friday, March 16. Just as they were in the Fall, the Spring Conferences at Walt Morey will
be student-led. This means that your student will be the one explaining his/her academic growth to you. Students have spent the
past few weeks preparing for the conferences by creating portfolios of their work in all their courses.
Your student will lead the conference in an area where his/her homeroom teacher will be present. Because teachers are not the ones
doing all the explaining, there will be more than one conference running at a time. Once you complete the student-led portion of the
conference, you are encouraged to meet with all your student’s teachers to talk about any questions or concerns you may have. Maps
with teacher room assignments will be provided to you when you arrive for your conference.
This week, your student’s Homeroom teacher will be sending home appointment slips confirming the day and time of the conference
you requested. If you did not turn in a request, an appointment will be scheduled for you. However, if you do not receive an
appointment confirmation or you need to reschedule your conference, please contact your child’s Homeroom teacher as quickly as
possible.
See you all at conferences!
Sincerely,
Tanya Pruett, Principal

Sinceramente,
Tanya Pruett, Directora de la escuela

PALS Corner
Our Winter/Spring fundraiser has wrapped up. Thank you to all who participated! Please
mark your calendars for cookie dough pick up on Wednesday, March 21, from 2 – 4 PM.
PALS needs more parent involvement! PALS is an important piece to your child’s education
and we are in need of parents who can step up and be a part of this organization. Our
meetings are held on the first Monday of the month; we meet in the Library at 6:30 PM.
The first and third Tuesday of every month is Popcorn Day. Price of popcorn is 50 cents or 3
Mustang Bucks. Your student can get a popcorn during lunch. During lunch on the last
Thursday of every month, ice cream is sold for 50 cents or 3 Mustang Bucks.
8th Grade Recognition Celebration Corner
The 8th Grade Recognition Celebration planning is underway. We could really use your help in planning this exciting
day for our 8th graders. Please plan to attend a planning meeting; the meetings are held the first Monday of the
month after the PALS meeting.
We have two 8th Grade fundraisers this month: Chipolte is sponsoring an event on March 12 and MOD Pizza an event
on March 19. Please see the flyers in this issue of the newsletter, print and bring to the restaurants (or copy to
phone and show at time of order). Please spread the word – share these events with your friends and family!
