28th Sunday of Ordinary TimeOctober 10, 2021

From the Desk of Deacon Rey Spadoni, www.ComposingCatholic.com

I’ve been thinking a lot about loss.

Just a few days ago at work, one of our medical direc-tors described the experience of patients when they are given bad medical news. She talked to us about transi-tion, challenge, and loss. Then, as part of an exercise for all of us who were sitting in the meeting, she asked us to write down all of the things and people most meaningful to us. On small slips of paper, I jotted down names first, then all the rest. Finally, the medical direc-tor asked this question: “What do you enjoy doing every day?”

I created a list in my head and the items on it ran a gam-ut from the trivial, such as driving to Starbucks for a morning iced coffee, to the vital, such as checking in with family members. After writing each onto a small piece of paper, the doctor then asked us to reach over to the person immediately to our left and, without look-ing, take away one of their slips of paper. This symbolic gesture was to demonstrate the loss that such patients feel when they are given difficult medical news. I saw the reactions of my colleagues and understood the point of the exercise. Their expressions showed just how challenging it can be to have something meaning-ful taken away. And by the sheer loss of control. Imag-ine my great relief when the person next to me re-moved the piece of paper that said “drive to Starbucks for coffee”. What a relief! Something so small, so mi-nor.

But then, it slowly began to sink in. This “trivial” daily activity suddenly did not feel so trivial to me. I under-stood that my daily routine would be gone. I wondered: why can I no longer drive? Will I miss the friendly and familiar faces in the coffee shop. It was a trivial loss but suddenly it did not feel so trivial.

And then there is the matter of my mom who is in a nursing home. The pandemic has exacerbated the isola-tion and loneliness she has felt, especially during those many months when her family was not permitted to

visit. Last night, I sat at the edge of her bed while she reminisced. She does this a lot, only this time, instead of talking about my dad or her sisters, she talked about “all the little things I took for granted.” She remem-bered sitting on the back porch of our childhood home at night, under the stars, and after her sons were asleep. She told me about her life as a dental hygienist and the many patients she got to know through the years. She remembered cooking Sunday meals for her family. We talked about sitting in the family room watching the Friday night lineup of sitcoms. The trivial things.

I have touted the benefits of keeping a gratitude journal on these pages before and I am convinced of the bene-fits. But this most recent experience of considering loss has greatly enhanced my appreciation for all of the “trivial” things in my life. I have been thinking about sudden loss. What if I could no longer take a walk at Bird Park with my camera and photograph the changing seasons? What if listening to my favorite musical artists while taking a long drive was no longer possible? What if having a chance to sit on the beach and stare out at the incoming waves was suddenly gone? What if my ability to feel the worn texture of my weathered leather work bag became impossible? What if…?

I am sure I take for granted a million different things in my life. Things I don’t typically think much about and which seem utterly trivial, but which I would surely miss if they were suddenly gone. Reflecting on loss has helped me to be more grateful in the moment. It has helped me to feel more appreciative, to be more con-nected to my life.

Everything in life is a gift and we all have received bless-ings. Some are incredibly obvious. Some are surprising-ly subtle. Reflect on your life. Think about how you would feel if someone, or something, was suddenly gone. Think about your daily routines. What brings you joy? What would you miss?

“Don’t it always seem to go, that you don’t know what you’ve got ‘til it’s gone. They paved paradise and put up a parking lot.” Big Yellow Taxi by Joni Mitchell

The Virtual Prayer Group is continuing through the sum-mer. Join us any Saturday at 9am as we come together via Zoom to share and pray in union with the Church and each other. We read the next day’s Mass readings and one of us offers a prayerful reflection. All are invit-ed to respectfully offer comments and thoughts on the theme of the reflection and Mass readings. The read-ings can be found at https://bible.usccb.org/daily-bible-reading. We close with prayers for the Church, for each other, and for special intentions. Most of the reflections are posted the following day at www.ComposingCatholic.com.

You can join the meeting by following the link below, by pointing your camera to the QR code, or by telephone by dialing 1-929-205-6099 and using meeting ID 859 7983 9707 and passcode: 4422003.

Please consider joining us and invite a friend! https://tinyurl.com/wjzpf8cp The password is Walpole.

O M – O 10We will be celebrating our Outdoor Mass at the Music Court (blue arrow) in Bird Park in East Walpole on Sun-day, Oct. 10 at 11am. Bishop Reed will be presiding. This will be a wonderful

opportunity to enjoy the beauty of our local park while worshiping with family and friends.

We are excited to use this venue, but also realize that it poses some challenges. The parking lots are a good walking distance from the Music Court. We are asking everyone to bring their own chairs for the Mass.

In the event of rain, the Mass will take place at Blessed Sacrament Church at 11am, otherwise, there will NOT be an 11am at Blessed Sacrament that day. The 11:30am Mass at St. Mary’s that Sunday will be CANCELLED.

We hope that you will join us!

U C PIn accordance with the most updated Covid protocol from the Archdiocese, beginning this weekend we are asking that everyone wear a mask from now on when attending Mass. This is not considered a mandate but merely our heartfelt request for everyone’s help as we try to keep each other healthy during this time of in-creased virus transmission. We do hope that this is a temporary request and we will keep you posted on any changes.

As always, it is our priority to provide a compassionate worship space where everyone feels welcome, comfort-able, and safe. We will do our part; we ask that you do yours.

PARKING O MIf you are able walk a longer distance to the Music Court, please consider parking in the St. Mary parking lot (205 Washington St) so that others, who may be more physically limited, can park in the Polley Lane lot (the unpaved lot).

There will be Knights of Columbus and other vol-unteers who will be assisting with parking and crossing the street at the Polley Lane lot.

A IHas a family member or friend ever ex-pressed an interest in the Catholic Church? Or maybe you yourself have never been baptized, or have been baptized in another Christian tradition, and feel that

God may now be calling you toward the Church. We offer an opportunity to come together in a small group to learn more about our faith. Sessions begin in the fall and focus on the teachings and experience of Church to prepare individuals to celebrate the Sacra-ments of Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist during the Easter season. You are invited to participate in the process with your questions, your insights, and your faith story in a warm accepting setting. Because it is a process and not a pre-set program that is the same for everyone, we meet people where they are on their faith journeys and help them to develop their relationship with God, His Church, and the Walpole Catholic commu-nity.If you are interested or to learn more, contact Deacon Alan at [email protected].

B RBaptism is the first sacrament of Christian initiation. It is the sacrament that frees a person from original sin

and makes that person a member of Christ and His Church, thus being the way to a new and spiritual life. One must be baptized before sharing in any of the other sacraments.

Infants can be baptized soon after birth. At the time of baptism, parents vow to practice their faith and provide a Catholic upbringing for the child.

Group baptisms take place on the second Sunday of the month at 1pm at St. Mary's and at Blessed Sacrament on the third Sunday of the month at 12:30pm.

Please feel free to contact our Baptism Coordinator, Pat, at 508-668-4974 ext. 115. Leave a message and your call will be returned.

C TWe will continue our Wednesday Night Confessions at Blessed Sacrament Church from 7-8pm through the month of October. We will re-evaluate the schedule for November.

Therefore, we will NOT resume Confessions on Satur-days from 2:45-3:50pm at both churches until further notice. Parishioners are welcome to approach the Priest before or after any Daily Mass or Sat-urday, 4pm Mass to have their Confession heard.

B S BThe Blessed Sacrament Book Club will next meet on Tuesday, October 12th at 7:30pm in the Community Room.

S . V P SThe Saint Vincent de Paul Society is a volunteer group of parishioners serving the needs of the poor in our community. As you may remember, our poor boxes at Blessed Sac-rament were vandalized several times and were re-moved from the church. This resulted in lost income, which we use to help the poor in our community. In an effort to replace this lost income, we have placed some envelopes at the rear of the church. If you are willing and able to help us help our poor neighbors, please take an envelope and put it in the collection basket.

If you are unable and find yourselves in need of assis-tance, please give us a call and we may be able to help you at 508-476-6003. God Bless the poor.

T Y ! We reached our Catholic Appeal numbers for both parishes! Many thanks to all our generous parishioners.

R 1…....…...........................W 7:7-11I prayed, and prudence was given me; I pleaded, and the spirit of wisdom came to me. I preferred her to scepter and throne, and deemed riches nothing in comparison with her, nor did I liken any priceless gem to her; because all gold, in view of her, is a little sand, and before her, silver is to be accounted mire. Beyond health and comeliness I loved her, and I chose to have her rather than the light, because the splendor of her never yields to sleep. Yet all good things together came to me in her company, and countless riches at her hands.

R PR. (14) Fill us with your love, O Lord, and we will sing for joy!Teach us to number our days aright, that we may gain wisdom of heart.Return, O LORD! How long? Have pity on your servants!R. Fill us with your love, O Lord, and we will sing for joy!Fill us at daybreak with your kindness, that we may shout for joy and gladness all our days.Make us glad, for the days when you afflicted us, for the years when we saw evil.R. Fill us with your love, O Lord, and we will sing for joy!Let your work be seen by your servants and your glory by their children;and may the gracious care of the LORD our God be ours; prosper the work of our hands for us! Prosper the work of our hands!R. Fill us with your love, O Lord, and we will sing for joy!

R 2…...........…...…..…....H 4:12-13Brothers and sisters:Indeed the word of God is living and effective, sharper than any two-edged sword, penetrating even between soul and spirit, joints and marrow, and able to discern reflections and thoughts of the heart.

No creature is concealed from him,but everything is naked and exposed to the eyes of himto whom we must render an account.

AR. Alleluia, alleluiaBlessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. R. Alleluia, alleluia

G ….....................................M 10:17-27As Jesus was setting out on a journey, a man ran up,knelt down before him, and asked him,"Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?"Jesus answered him, "Why do you call me good?No one is good but God alone. You know the commandments: You shall not kill;you shall not commit adultery;you shall not steal;you shall not bear false witness;you shall not defraud;honor your father and your mother."He replied and said to him,"Teacher, all of these I have observed from my youth."Jesus, looking at him, loved him and said to him,"You are lacking in one thing.Go, sell what you have, and give to the poorand you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me."At that statement his face fell, and he went away sad, for he had many possessions.Jesus looked around and said to his disciples,"How hard it is for those who have wealthto enter the kingdom of God!"The disciples were amazed at his words. So Jesus again said to them in reply,"Children, how hard it is to enter the kingdom of God!It is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for one who is rich to enter the kingdom of God."They were exceedingly astonished and said among themselves,"Then who can be saved?"Jesus looked at them and said,"For human beings it is impossible, but not for God.All things are possible for God."

NICENE CREEDI believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heav-en, and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pon-tius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end.I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church.I confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sinsand I look forward to the resurrection of the deadand the life of the world to come. Amen.
