Maureen Scott was born In Coventry w here as a child during the second w orld w ar she w itn essed the devastating air raids o f the N azi Luftwaffe. These bitter m em ories im ­printed them selves on her mind and becam e a determ inative factor in her developm ent.She u ses her art to fight war and the powers which organise and finance w a rs.She has taken part in severa l exhibitions One o f her paintings on the them e of Chile w as acquired by the Amalgam ated Union of E ngineering W orkers; another in m em ory of Kevin Gately the student from Coventry who lo s t h is life duying the Red Lion Square dem onstration against the National Front in 1972, hangs in the Students' Union o f Warwick U niversity in Coventry. She has a lso executed a large m ural for the Labour Museum in the E ast End of London, and has illu strated poem s by the Chilean poet Pablo Neruda and the Turkish poet Nazim Hikmet.

L I N A K O R NHalina Korn was born in W arsaw in 1902.Started life as a singer and lived in France until the Germans occupied the country in 1940. Fled to England, during the w ar.She began to paint during an illn e ss , encouraged by the P olish painter Marek Zulawski, whom she later m arried .In 1948, she held her fir s t one-m an show in Lon­don. It was followed by exhibitions in P aris, New York and W arsaw . In 1965, she was forced to give up work due to illn e ss .The famous P olish artist F elik s Topolski wrofat ' . . . h e r lack of concern with the intellectual mode of painting dominant today; with the pattern-m aking and the reshuffling of the world of conventional creatures, and also of her gay, daily harvesting o f them es from among the life around her - a rem inder (surprising that it has to be brought back to us) o f the vitality that is contained in genre - a m atter not only neglected by the abstract but the r e a lis t trend as w ell;

and a su ccessfu l answ er to the anathem ists of illustration' and of 'journalism '.
