Tutta la produzione artigianale ha radi­ci nella storia enell'economia del ter­ritorio: la coltelleria, la ceramica

d'uso, la tessitura, la lavorazione delle pie­tre edel legno. In molti casi si sono con­servati i processi produttivi, il materiale ele forme tradizionali. Attualmentel'artigianato più famoso del MedioCampidano èquello del coltello il cui uso èantichissimo, tipico del mondo pastorale econtadino. La presenza di abilissimi arti­giani ela qualità eccelsa della produzioneha reso il coltello sardo, nelle sue tante for­me, famoso nel mondo. Oggigiorno sonoattive 12 officine ed un numero infinito dihobbisti; ad Arbus ha sede un museo chedetiene il primato del coltello più grandedel mondo (4,65 mdi lunghezza e285 kgdi peso), mentre aGuspini si organizzauna manifestazione "Arresojas" (dal latinorasoria, rasoi) di livello internazionale.Il manico èin corno di montone oin legno,la lama afoglia di mirto senza punta (aGuspini) ovvero afoglia larga (Arburesa).Moltissimi abili artigiani si cimentano nellacoltelleria da collezione, con particolarilavorazioni del corno ocon le lame dama­scate. Altrettanto nota èl'attività dei cera­misti che hanno il principale centro aPabillonis, da sempre noto per la produzio­ne di articoli da cucina eda fuoco diffusi intutta la Sardegna. La produzione spaziadai tegami alle pentole, dagli orci ai piatti,dai vassoi alle brocche di varia forma editutte le misure. Sono presenti in molti cen­tri ceramisti che alternano agli oggetti piùtradizionali manufatti artistici sia nelleforme che nella decorazione enell'uso deicolori. Di recente aVillanovaforru, SardaraeVillacidro si èsviluppata la produzione diarticoli che, con grande cura delle forme edel materiale, riproducono orichiamano ilvasellame ritrovato negli scavi archeologi­ci. Sempre collegata alla tradizione èla tes­situra (tappeti, tendaggi, tovagliato, etc.),che ha laboratori di produzione aGuspini eSardara; Villanovaforru è.nota anche per ilricamo degli scialli. Mogoro,che aderisce alSistema Turistico Locale del MedioCampidano, èil centro più rilevante per la

AIl the hand-crafted items producedin this area are deeply rooted in thehlstory and economy of the terri­

tory: knifes, daily use ceramics, wovenfabrics, carved stone and wood objects.In many cases, traditional production pro­cesses, materials and patterns have beenpreserved.Todar, the best known handicraft items ofthe Medio Campidano are its knives, usedfrom very aneient times, an indispensabletool of the shepherd's and farmer's world.The presence of talented knife-makersand the excellent quality of their wareshave made Sardinian knives in ali theirmany forms famous worldwide.Today there are 12 professional work­shops in operation and an infinite numberofamateur knife-makersj Arbus has amuseum with the largest knife in theworld (4.65 mlong for a weight of285 kg),while Guspini organises an event knownas "Arresojas" (from the Latin wordrasoria, razors) of international profile.The handle is in ram's horn or wood thebIade is myrtle-Ieafshaped, with b/~nt tip(at Guspini) or broad-Ieafshaped (knownas Arburesa).Many skilled artisans dedicate their timeto making collectors' items, carving spe­eial designs on the horn handles or mak­ing damascene blades.Equally well known is the activity of thepotters, with their main centre atPabillonis, famous throughout Sardinia fortheir kitchen items and cooking pots.Their products range from pans to sauce­pans, from wine and oil jars to plates,trays, jugs of various shapes and sizes.Many centres can boast ofpotters whoalternate the production of traditionalware with artistic items showinggreat cre­ativity in the choice ofshapes andcolours.Recent/r, the potters of VillanovaforruSardara and Villacidro have started p~o­ducing pottery that faithfully replicatesthe materials and shapes of local archae­ological findings.Another important handicraft tradition isweaving (carpets, curtains, tableclothsetc.) with workshops at Guspini andSardaraj Villanovaforru is also famous forits embroidered shawls.Mogoro, which is amember of the MedioCampidano Local Tourist Network, is themost important centre for the production

of carpets and tapestries; each year inthe month ofAugust one of the mostimportant carpet and weaving trade fairsin Sardinia is held there.This town also has anumber ofcraftsmenskilled in wood carving, producing chests,items of furniture and the famousSardinian chairs known as scanni, withwoven reed seats.Serrenti is well known for its stone cutterswho used to produce flour millstones, andlintels and arches for dwellings - nowa­days they employ their skills to produceworks ofart in trachyte and granite.The goldsmith's art is represented by theartists of Villacidro and Guspini who pro­duce both traditional filigree designs andmodern jewellerrTraditional handcrafted products can befound throughout the province: items instone and bronze, wood and cork andwoven baskets.

produzione di tappeti earazzi; nel mese diAgosto viene organizzata una delle piùimportanti fiere del tappeto edella tessitu­ra in Sardegna. Nello stesso comune sonopresenti esperti a~igiani dell'intaglio dellegno: cassapanche, mobili ele famosesedie sarde "scanni" impagliate con giun­co. Serrenti èconosciuta per gli scalpellini,che un tempo realizzavano macine per ilgrano, travi earchi per l'edilizia abitativa eche oggi si cimentano in opere d'arte in tra­chite egranito. L'oreficeria vanta degli arti­giani aVillacidro eGuspini che alternanolavorazioni tradizionali in filigrana amoderni preziosi. Sono comunque presentiin tutto il territorio provinciale le tradizio­nali produzioni artigianali: la lavorazionedella pietra edel bronzo, la cestineria, lalavorazione del legno edel sughero.
