A message from Craig…….

Hi.

Your Council has been able to meet via a thing called ZOOM. Council has discussed the situation of the

Futurity, Finals and the AGM. The AGM date has been set for Saturday 18th July at 1pm to be held at the

Cossie Club in Taupo.

The Futurity. It is thought that this may be able to be held at the Ladd’s Show in January but as this is a

CPCHC show we will be discussing with them as to the feasibility of holding it at that time.

National Finals. This event is being considered as to holding it at Waimiha mid December. This will de-

pend on the venue being able to have sufficient cattle for two National Finals in the one season. We will

keep you posted as to what can be organised.

Judges Seminar. Council has agreed to investigate an Australian Judge who is suitable to hold a Judge’s

Clinic. Until this becomes a reality all Judges will maintain their current rankings.

Kind Regards

Craig

IM GUNNA CUT aka IMA 2004-2020

In memory of a great horse known as ‘Ima’ who has helped numerous riders achieve great things within the New Zealand Cutting, Reining and Performance Arenas.

Bred and Trained by Barry Ladd, this team successfully campaigned together.

Winning the Open & Non Pro Futurity in 2008 & also the Derby & Non Pro Derby in 2009. While owned by Barry, Ima was

also successfully shown by Catherine Ladd.

2010 saw Barry Sell Ima to Rosemary Haultain.

Rosemary and Ima accomplished many successes together in Rookie, Lady Rider and Non

Pro Classes in Cutting.

Tamsin Lucas purchased ‘Ima’ off Rosemary May 2014 where they too accomplished many Island and

Nationals Titles in Cutting/Performance & Reining.

Angel Marsh acquired ‘Ima’ off Tamsin December 2017, where they continued to do well in

Reining and Performance riding.

RIARMAS Crikey Doc aka Crikey 2009-2020

In recent news, we are saddened to hear of the passing of another great horse, who has had a large part to play in welcom-ing new comers to our wonderful sport.

Otherwise known as Crikey has achieved many accomplishments. 2013 NZCHA National Derby Champion

2013 NZCHA National Hi Point 4 year old 2015 NZCHA Youth Rider title with Philippa Cederman

2014/15 Hi Point South Island Novice Champion 2015/16 Hi Point South Island Novice Champion

Geoff & Janine Taylor bought Crikey as a yearling from Lyn Malcom for Geoff to train as his first Futurity horse. Although

not a natural athlete, he had a huge heart and will to try and his honesty was amazing. He was the sort of horse you could turn back on all day then put into the cutting pen as a hand down cutter.

He had many riders compete on him including Geoff Taylor, Gemma Williams, Julie Gregory, Philippa Cederman and Jenna Mills.

He was a great help horse in his later years until he was sold to Philippa Cederman who once again competed him and then

sold on to Jenna Mills after Philippa went to University. Jenna enjoyed great success on him this last season till she tragically lost him to Yew tree poisoning. Geoff & Janine owned him for 11 years of his life and they will all miss him as the character

he was.

Clinton Anderson: Don’t get Emotional When Training

Horses. When training your horse, don't let your emotions

confuse the issue at hand. Adapted from Lessons Well

Learned: Why My Method Works for Any Horse

by Clinton Anderson "Clinton, I want to improve my gelding's behaviour, but he gets so grumpy when I ask him to do something. I reward him when he is cooperative, but it doesn't seem to be making him any better. And I'm afraid 'getting after him' will just make his attitude worse--or even make him dislike me." Talk about a bad attitude--this horse owner has one! I see this a lot at my clinics. People get so worried about their relation-ships with their horses and so wrapped up in the whole natural horsemanship thing they forget the bottom line: You've got to get the job done. I learned this when I was about 15 or 16 while training horses in Australia for Gordon McKinlay. I was just getting started with natural horsemanship and was working with a big black mare with a bad attitude. In keeping with my early training, as soon as that mare would do something right, I'd instantly re-ward her with a pat, a treat, and a little break. I was basically trying to bribe her into loving me and loving what she was doing. Problem is, she was actually getting worse by the day. Gordon took one look at this belligerent mare after I'd been working with her for a while and said, "Clinton, you've done a pretty bad job on this horse." Gordon has never been one to mince words. I said, "Gordon, I've been working with her seven days a week, doing everything you taught me, trying my best to get her where she needs to be, but she's just got a bad attitude." "Well," he replied, "you'd better step up to the plate and get the job done because this mare has to go home next week, and the owners aren't going to be happy when they see how bad she is after being here for six weeks." Ask, then tell So here's what I did: For the entire last week of her training, I treated that mare the way I would any other horse. I got in there every day and made the wrong thing difficult for her and the right thing easy. I made her feet move--now. I asked her, and when she didn't respond, I told her. I didn't worry about her feelings or her emotions or her attitude. When she did something right, I rewarded her by simply let-ting her rest and leaving her alone. When she did something wrong, I made her feel very uncomfortable. Within three days, that mare's attitude--and her whole percep-tion of work, and of me--completely changed. In fact, in that last week of working with her, I caught her up to where she should've been by that time, despite our initial setbacks. On the day she went home, she was as good as all the other horses that had been ridden for six weeks. In other words, she made more progress in those last five or six days than she had in the entire five weeks before.

Why didn't she progress in those first five weeks? Because I'd been babysitting her. I'd been trying to coax her into liking me, and the situation. What she'd needed instead, and what I finally gave her in that last week, was a taste of, "If you don't like this, try this. If you thought what I was asking you to do was difficult and sweaty, how about this? Very quickly, she came to realize that what I'd been originally asking her to do wasn't so bad after all. Don't Beg! That mare taught me an important aspect of natural horseman-ship that a lot of people don't understand. Although I certainly do want my horses to like me and enjoy the time we spend together (don't get me wrong--that's still important to me), the reality is this: When you're training a horse, you have a job to do, and you've got to get that job done. Being business-like about it will give you your best chance of succeeding at that job. Especially with tough customers! Horses are a lot like people? Their personalities vary. Some horses, like some people, are just naturally cranky. Can you improve their attitude? Sure you can. But you may never get them to put a smile on their face all the time. With some peo-ple, you can just look at them sideways and they get angry and hateful. And yet with others, you can insult their mother and they just smile at you and say, "Oh, you don't really mean that. Come over here and let me give you a hug." Horses are the same. Not every person who goes to jail is going to be rehabilitated, and not every belligerent horse is going to completely change his attitude, no matter what you do. What I've discovered, though, is that for the horses with the worst attitudes, the more you baby them, the worse they get. The less you ask them to do and the less pressure you put on them, the worse their attitudes become. Conversely, the harder you work them and the more you ask them to do, the better their attitudes get. You may never turn a fundamentally sour minded horse into the horse of your dreams. But by always focusing first on getting the job done, you're always going to get the best possible results with that particular horse. So--the lesson I learned from that difficult black mare is one I hope you'll take to heart. Don't be hooked on this lovey-dovey "I love my horse, he loves me" emotion to the point you're practically begging your horse to do what you want him to do. Because then, you'll get the opposite of what you're looking for. Before you can have that emotional connection and relation-ship with your horse, you first have to earn his respect by get-ting the job done of moving his feet--forward, backward, left, and right. It's as simple as that...and nothing to get emotional about. Adapted from Lessons Well Learned: Why My Method Works for Any Horse, by Clinton Anderson. Available at Horsebooks

Etc.

REMIT 1: - Mindy

I ‘Mindy Pates’ Propose that Page 50 Rule 4 read:

These events shall be for horses from FOUR (4) years of age. They need not be held with any other NZCHA approved cutting horse classes,

however any other NZCHA approved classes may be held with approved age events.

The classification of aged events are:

Futurity - 4 year old

Derby/ Superstakes – 5 year old

Classic - 6 year old

Challenge - 7 year old

Classic-Challenge - 6 & 7 year old

Seven-Up - Horses 7 years of age and older

Snaffle Bit Futurity – 4 year old

For the purpose of these NZCHA Approved Aged Event classifications the NZCHA Futurity Show and any other club run aged events will run

between August 1st until the following August 1st (unless special circumstances prevail).

NOTE: This does not alter a horse’s birthday it merely gives show committees twelve (12) months leeway to run age events under the above

categories. For the purpose of NZCHA affiliated age events all horses will have a birthday on the 1st August every year.

Proposed: Mindy Pates Seconded: Kristin Dickson

From Current 4.

These events shall be for horses from three (3) years of age. They need not be held with any other NZCHA approved cutting horse classes,

however any other NZCHA approved classes may be held with approved age events.

The classification of aged events are:

Futurity - 3 year old

Derby/ Superstakes - 4 year old

Classic - 5 & 6 year old

Challenge – 7 year old

Classic-Challenge - 5, 6 & 7 year old

Seven-Up - Horses 7 years of age and older

Snaffle Bit Futurity – 3 year old

For the purpose of these events the year will be from the NZCHA Futurity Show in May to the following NZCHA Futurity. In May (unless

special circumstances prevail)

NOTE: This does not alter a horse’s birthday it merely gives show committees five (5) months leeway to run age events under the above

categories. For the purpose of NZCHA affiliated age events all horses will have a birthday on the 1st August every year.

REASONS for Remit 1: Page 50 Rule 4

• This would allow for horses to be a year older, stronger and mentally mature

• We are expecting current 3 year olds to have three runs in one day in NZ, (Pre work and two go rounds)

• We are losing a number of potential entries every year for the Futurity as the horses are just not physically or mentally capable of being

shown under the current circumstances. For example, there may have been at least 3 more contestants if the horses would have been giv-

en until they were 4 years old.

• We should be proactive about showing horses that are more mature, as opposed to re-active when activist force us not to be showing 3

year old. (This does not any anyway determine when an owner elect’s to start a futurity prospected training programme, it merely gives

more time to achieve a more mature horse, hopefully a higher standard of competition, less horses being injured by being pushed too far

too fast, which will result in more horses staying sound and competitive for longer.

• There is a growing number of members, with limited access to cattle to train horses and while the mechanical cow is a great tool, cattle

are also needed to create a finished Cutting Horses which they just do not have daily access too, and sometimes the only way to do cattle

work is after show Trainings and/or training clinics which tend to only run between November – May.

• Environmental conditions make it difficult for training through the winter without indoor facilities, by changing the age to 4years old, we

give ourselves an extra season of training which appeals greatly to those that may be considering training a futurity horse or even their first

horse.

• Typically, it takes a Professional Trainer 12-18 months of solid training to get to a Futurity and that is being optimistic in the right condi-

tions, but to produce a finished BROKE cutting horse to a high standard it can take 3-4years+. So, keeping this in mind allowing another of

year of training will result in a more finished horse.

• Less Injuries, protecting the longevity of our horses.

Other points to consider to Remit 1.

• We encourage the NZCHA to be proactive against the showing of three-year-old horses.

• We want to ensure the longevity of our horses and ensure the soundness of their careers.

• We also want to ensure the longevity of our Trainers within our industry (given most are of non-professional status). We feel

giving these people another year to produce a futurity horse would make training these horses more achievable and encour-

aging for them.

• The age and subsequent showing schedule proposed in this remit also considers existing successful trainers and their cur-

rent programs.

• We believe this would be a key step forward in adapting to our current Cutting Horse industry in New Zealand being

non-professional majority.

Page 15: VOLUME 2020.5 JUNE 2020 New Zealand Cutting Horse ... · NZCHA NOTICES NZCHA Annual General Meeting to be held in Taupo, Saturday 18th July 2020—1pm start, Taupo Cosmopolitan Club.

Remit 4: - Mindy

I ‘Mindy Pates’ propose that we add: Rule 20. Guidelines for Futurity -

A. The NZCHA Futurity class and Snaffle Bit Futurity be run as a combined group, until such numbers would allow for indi-

vidual herds.

B. Futurity horses must compete out of herds first, followed by any Snaffle Bit Futurity horses

C. Prize giving will also be Futurity first then Snaffle Bit presentations

D. Potential Futurity/Snaffle bit Futurity nominees shall be nominated by Dec 1st each year

E. The owner/s of any nominated Futurity horse may elect to switch the entry to the Snaffle Bit futurity class without

penalty (and will be refunded any overpaid entries) up to two weeks prior to the competition start date and vice versa

a Snaffle Bit prospect can be switched to full Futurity on payment of the full futurity entry fee being received by the

Show secretary up to two weeks prior to the start date.

F. A mock Snaffle Bit Buckle and set of undated ribbons should be available for presentation and a keepsake buckle pur-

chased post the show if required.

G. Council must nominate and budget for a Snaffle Bit futurity each year, with a suggested minimum purse (No added

entry) of $200.00. if no SB entries are received the money is set aside for the following year.

H. The above would allow for a little flexibility to retain competitors attending the Futurity show if they feel their horses

and or rider confidence would be compromised by going hands down when they maybe almost there, or when a

Snaffle bit horse exceeds expectation and is deemed ready to go hands down for the first show.
