president Wilson opened the meeting and called on Mr. Jeffers, Chairman

of the Board of Regents.

REMARKS OF CHAIRMAN JEFFERS. --Chairman Jeffers stated that for some years the members of the Administration and of the Board of Regents as well as members of the University Development Board have been con-

scious of the desirability of having frequent joint sessions of the two Boards to discuss the problems and projects of the Boards. Heretofore

the joint n%eetings have been rather brief in nature. Some months ago both Boards agreed it would be desirable to institute the policy of having

more extended joint sessions in order that the program of the University Development Board and the needs of the University the Development

Board can best serve might be explored in greater detail.

He called a: .:ntion to the fact that the discussions of the future problems

by the Co::~.~ittee of 75 have impressed on all members of both Boards

more emphatically than ever before the growing importance - the real and vital importance - of the assignment of the Development Board on the future of The University of Texas in achieving that real distinction

-or which the University aspires.

Chairman Jeffers' closing remarks were~ "Accordingly, it is our view, and I know yours, that the Board of Regents and the University Develop-

ment Board in the years ahead will find increasingly helpful to have

closer communication between our two bodies than there has been in

the past.

"I am personally delighted we have fine representation here from both

Boards."

REMARKS OF CHAIKM-AN ODOM. --Regent Chairman Jeffers called on Mr. J. M. Odom, Chairman of the University Development Board.

Chairman Odom stated ~hat the University Development Board had re- quested a joint meeting with the Board of Regents° He stressed the common interest of the two Boards: Serving The University of Texas. The primary interest at hand is keeping pace with business expansion.

He cited the enrollment of the University and reviewed general busi- ness conditions of thirty years ago and compared them with those of today. The efforts of the Development Board should be multiplied and concentrated in such a manner as to achieve this true excellence

all want for The University of Texas.

CONTINUING JOINT COMMITTEE OF THE BOARD OF REGENTS AND THE UNIVERSITY DEVELOPMENT BOARD. --The approaches to various problems and projects were discussed freely by the members of both Boards. By common consent, upon the recommenda- tion of Regent Chairman Jeffers~ both Boards, with a majority present, agreed that a Continuing Joint Committee of the Board of Regents and the University Development Board be created to explore in detail the

program of the University Development Board and the needs of the University that the Development Board can best serve with a view to true excellence and distinction for the University. This Committee to be composed of two members of the Development Board and two members of the Board of Regents appointed by the Chairmen of the respective Boards would meet with the Executive Director of the

Office of the University Development Board and with administrative

officers designated by the President.
