June 24, 20116 • DTSS ~ Class of 2011

By Kate IrwinPioneer Staff

Graduating is an exhilarating — and somewhat ter-rifying — experience. School is over; the future beckons, and with a tinge of regret and a healthy dose of excite-ment, the Columbia Valley’s graduating class of 2011 will step out into the wide world.

Their plans are many and varied: some will head straight into college, others into jobs or further training, then there are those who just want to sit back, breathe a sigh of relief and take stock of how far they’ve come.

This weekend is packed with excite-ment for parents and graduates alike. With dry grad already under their belts, today these young adults take to the stage to receive their di-plomas before putting on the ball gowns and tuxedos to take part in the grand parade this Saturday, followed by the parent dinner and dance.

With the end of high school finally here, The Pio-neer sat down with six members of this year’s graduating class to find out what their plans are, how it feels to leave the valley and where they hope to be in the future.

For valedictorian, Paul Brown, the choice of what to

do at university was simple. “I’m really passionate about sports and medicine, I’ve never wanted to do anything other than be a doctor,” said Paul, who is leaving Inver-mere for the University of Calgary to take a Bachelor of Kinesiology degree.

Although excited to head to Calgary, Paul — who joined David Thompson Secondary School in Grade 9 after moving from Waterloo, Ontario — said he will

miss the people he has met here. “The people here are great, I have lots of friends here

and family to come back and visit while I’m working during summers,” he added.

Paul lives with parents Dave Brown and Elizabeth Stuart in Invermere, and after a lifetime of playing a va-riety of sports, wants to turn this passion into a career in sports injury therapy or train as an orthopedic surgeon and work in the United States.

“Most people think of graduating as opening a new chapter or turning the page. I think you’re starting a whole new book,” said Lucas Putnam, who is moving to Vancouver in August to study for a diploma in film production at the Vancouver Film School.

Lucas has been passionate about film-making for years, taking classes in film every year since Grade 8. Af-ter making a seven-minute film for Remembrance Day,

it hit home to Lucas that this was what he wanted to do.

“Seeing a video I had made being watched by and affecting my peers re-ally made the idea of filmmaking more real,” he explained.

Lucas moved to the valley from Vancouver at the age of two, living in Radium with parents Debbie Basker-

ville and Bob Putnam. He attended Edgewater Ele-mentary before joining David Thompson. In the fu-ture, Lucas hopes to work for a production company, possibly as a cinematographer.

Another student heading towards Vancouver is Katie Milligen, who was born and raised in Invermere by parents Maggie and James Milligen. She will attend Simon Fraser University in Burnaby to study Interna-tional Studies.

“Most people think of graduating as opening a new chapter or turning the page. I think you’re starting a whole new book,”

— Lucas Putnam, 2011 graduate

Graduates move forward to new adventuresBRIGHT FUTURES — Cassidy Hanke, Lucas Putnam, Rob Minhas, Paul Brown, Kassie Colonna and Katie Milligen are ready to take the plunge after graduating today.

“I’ve always wanted to help people, so my main fo-cus is to become a humanitarian,” she explained. After a tough choice between continuing her studies and travel-ling to Africa to take part in volunteer programs, Katie

is excited to leave for college. Her love for children is leading Katie to-

wards a career working with orphans and young people aff ected by HIV/AIDS in de-veloping countries. Katie hopes to travel the world in her career as a humanitarian and thinks she may end up working for a non-profi t organization or in legislature. “I’d like to tell the community here thank you for a

wonderful childhood,” she added.Rob Minhas, son of Jagtar and Ruman

Minhas of Radium, will be following in the foot-steps of sister Tonie when he departs for the Univer-

sity of Calgary this fall. Playing to his strengths in sciences and math, Rob

will study a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineer-ing. Proximity to his family and hometown of Radium was an important factor in choosing where to study.

“I didn’t want to go to the other side of the country, and Calgary is a nice city,” he said. “I’ll defi nitely miss the people here. Whenever you’re volunteering or fund-raising, everyone comes out and is so supportive of what

you’re doing.” Rob has been involved with the high school’s

leadership class and numerous fundraising and

community events during his time in the valley. He hopes to work for an engineering fi rm in Calgary.

Vancouver-bound Cassidy Hanke has spent her en-tire school career locally, from Eileen Madson Primary School to JA Laird to David Th ompson Secondary. Cassidy is heading to the Vancouver Art Institute where she will take a two year diploma in 3D modelling for animation and games.

“I love movies, games, cartoons and everything art-sy,” she said. “I knew I wanted to do something in games and movies and that I liked designing characters.”

After many years in the valley, the fact that her class is graduating hasn’t quite sunk in yet, Cassidy told Th e Pioneer, adding that she will miss the proximity to na-ture and familiar surroundings. She hopes to forge a career working on major movies and video games.

“People should do what they want to do and what they are passionate about,” she added. “Don’t worry about what other people think.”

Kassie Colonna, who moved to Invermere with par-ents Kerry and Kerry Colonna in Grade 1, is heading across the border into Alberta to continue her schooling at the University of Lethbridge. In the fall, Kassie will begin a fi ve year degree in Social Work and is excited to join the university basketball team.

“Th e decision came down to loving playing bas-ketball and really liking the Lethbridge team,” Kassie revealed. Using her natural height advantage, Kassie got started with basketball in Grade 8 and began playing

competitively in Grade 10. “I will miss the mountains and knowing the

whole graduating class,” added Kassie, who went to Eileen Madson Primary, JA Laird and then David Th ompson Secondary. “It’s cool to have the history with my classmates here, but I’m also looking forward to cre-ating new relationships in a new place.”

Kassie is interested in travelling after college and then working for a school.

Th e Pioneer would like to extend our heartfelt congratulations to the en-

tire graduating class of 2011. Good luck to you all in your future endeavours.

JUMP FOR JOY — Katie Milligen (left) hopes to become a humanitarian after col-lege, while Kassie Colonna is thinking of spending some time travelling after college before going to work in the education sector.
