1 Lichfield CathedralYou can’t visit Lichfield without a trip to themagnificent cathedral. The only medievalcathedral in the country with three spires,it has beautiful carvings, paintings,sculpture and treasures on display,including the stunning Lichfield Angel andSt Chad Gospels in the Chapter House.

2 The Staffordshire HoardThe world famous Staffordshire Hoard isthe largest hoard of Anglo-Saxon goldever found. It was discovered just outsideLichfield in 2009. A small selection ofhoard items, along with replicas of somestar items, are on display in LichfieldCathedral’s Chapter House and at venuesacross the region (see page 19).

3 The National Memorial ArboretumWith 50,000 maturing trees and over250 significant memorials, the arboretumis the UK’s year round centre ofremembrance. As well as the iconicArmed Forces Memorial, the arboretumfeatures moving tributes to charities, localand overseas organisations, as well ascivil services such as the fire andpolice. A varied programme of eventstakes place all year round.

4 The Samuel Johnson Birthplace MuseumWhile in the city, follow the story of theyoung Samuel Johnson, from his difficultchildhood to national celebrity anddictionary fame. The Grade I listedmuseum includes period room settings,interactive displays, activities for children,and more.

We start the year in style with thespirited Winter Beer and WineFestival and a traditional ShrovetideFair, with its ancient ceremony andpancake races, in February. Yoxall’sbeautiful bluebell woods open in April.

Lichfield was created in the 1st centurywhen the Romans built a fort atLetocetum (now known as Wall). Inaround 672AD, following the death ofSt Chad, Lichfield was reborn as anecclesiastical centre in honour of thesaint’s shrine. This was a thorny andbloody period of history, with many bat-tles marking the transition frompaganism to Christianity. It is believedthat around this time, the stunningStaffordshire Hoard, some of which canbe seen in the cathedral’s ChapterHouse, was buried in the district,possibly after a battle between warringfactions. In 2003, excavations in the Nave of thecathedral uncovered the remains of aSaxon church and the Lichfield Angel,believed to be part of St Chad’s shrine,built by Bishop Hedda in the early 8thcentury. Today you can view the Lich-field Angel in the cathedral’sChapter House, along with the St ChadGospels, which are older than thefamous Book of Kells.

To soak up some of our city’s proudhistory, visit the home of the author ofthe first English dictionary - The SamuelJohnson Birthplace Museum - or head tothe home of Erasmus Darwin, the grand-father of, and inspiration to, the worldfamous Charles Darwin. Or, to take atour through the ages, from the Romansto present day, pay a visit to LichfieldHeritage Centre.

For a calm, contemplative day, head tothe National Memorial Arboretum. Nes-tled on the edge of the National Forest,it features over 250 memorials of na-tional significance. One of the mosticonic is the Armed ForcesMemorial, which commemorates themen and women who have lost theirlives in conflict, or as a result of terroristaction, from the end of the SecondWorld War to the present day.Plans for a new visitor centreare well underway andwork is due to start inearly 2013.

RoadThe A38 and A5 meet at Lichfield and providedirect access to the Midlands motorway network: M42, M50, M40, M5/M6 and M6Toll.

RailLichfield has two train stations. Lichfield CityStation, on Birmingham Road, is right in the citycentre and opposite the bus station. It offersfrequent services to Birmingham New StreetStation. Lichfield Trent Valley Station is approximately five minutes drive, or 20 minutes walk, from the city centre and offers direct services to London Euston and the north.For train enquiries call 08457 484950.
