Two years later, the Senatedecided that the clock was tobe placed “sopra la bocha diMarzaria” – at the beginningof the Merceria – as recalledby the Venetian historianMarin Sanudo.The historian’s writings alsotestify that in February 1499the works – almost certainlycarried out by Mauro Codussi– were completed, the clockmechanism was installed andthe building was unveiled forthe first time. When the Tower was builtthe idea was that the threeMagi and the Angel with thetrumpet would come out fromthe second-floor balcony andparade in front of theMadonna with child everyhour thanks to a particularmechanism. However, the wear that thevarious parts were subject toand the complexity of themechanism led to a less fre-quent use of it and eventoday, the procession of theMagi occurs only two times ayear: on 6th January (onEpiphany) and in June (onAscension day). The currentwooden statues are the onesremade by Giovan BattistaAlviero in 1755.The clock-face was also par-tially modified. Indeed, the15th century version not onlyrecorded the hour by Romannumerals, had an upper ring

Once you have reached thebalcony you will be deligh-ted by a suggestive and unu-sual view of Venice fromabove.

The heart of the whole system of the Clock is acomplex set of gears placed inside a big cross-shaped metallic structure located in the middleof the Tower. The system is composed by five dif-

ferent sections (trains): the Going Train, theTrain of the working of the Moors, the Train of

the 132 strokes, the Astronomic Machineand the Barrel of hours and minutes.Energy is supplied by a system of wei-ghts that are supposed to be periodi-cally lifted and loaded. This structure,which is nowadays perfectly readable

and in working order, datesback to the alteration by

Bartolomeo Ferracina(1753-57) who made con-

siderable changes tothe previous machine

built around the endof the fifteenth cen-tury by G. CarloRainieri.

Astronomica e il Tàmbure delle ore e dei minu-ti. L'energia è fornita dal meccanismo dei pesi che

debbono essere periodicamente rialzati e ricaricati.Questa struttura che ancora oggi è perfettamente leggi-

bile e funzionante, risale all'intervento di BartolomeoFerracina (1753-57) che modificò significativamente l'origina-

ria macchina costruita a fine Quattrocento da G. Carlo Rainieri.
