Ride for Karen helps send children to campby AdAm [email protected]

John Jenah clearly recalls the first time he jumped on his bike to take part in the Ride for Karen.

The charity event got under way at 9 a.m. and within 15 minutes the skies opened up and it started to pour rain.

Mr. Jenah, and many of his fel-low riders, were totally unprepared, but they didn’t let that stop them from pedalling for hours along slick streets.

“We said, ‘The kids with cancer can’t quit so we can’t quit,’” recalled Mr. Jenah, who operates a Concord accounting firm. “Everyone perse-vered.”

Mr. Jenah was inspired by the commitment of others taking part in the ride, but what keeps him coming back year after year was getting to meet some of the chil-dren with cancer who have benefit-ted from proceeds of the ride.

“It was very inspiring and very touching for me, so I decided to continue,” he explained.

The Ride for Karen is a charity cycling event started by Kris and Kirk Tobias in 2002 in memory of their mother, Karen.

During the past 10 years, the

event has raised more than $1.6 million for new cancer care facili-ties, resources for cancer centres and to send kids with cancer to

camp. “I wanted to give back to so

many people who supported my mother,” Kris said. “Physical activity

performs quite well as a catharsis; you sort of burn off some bad feel-

Ride for Karen founders Kris and Kirk Tobias, shown here with dad Kal, who later died of cancer, have raised more than $1.6 million with their charity bike ride.

KNSC boys give it best shotThe Kleinburg Nobleton

Soccer Club Boys 2000 Lions fought hard, but came up short in the BMO Team of the Week contest.

The U-12 boys team was bested by the Ladner Storm, which took home the $125,000 top prize.

The KNSC Boys 2000 Lions qualified as a finalist in week two of the contest, based in part, for its support of team-mate Giuliano Todaro, who was diagnosed with leukemia almost a year ago.

Team members have assisted in his efforts to raise money for leukemia research at The Hospital for Sick Chil-dren in Toronto by setting up Giuliano’s Journey.

They squared off against 14 other teams to see who could score the most online votes.

Mayor Maurizio Bevilac-qua threw his support behind the squad in the final week, encouraging residents to cast a vote daily for the team.

If they’d won it would have been the second year in a row that a team from Vaughan captured top honours in the contest.

Last year, the Glen Shields Sun Devils 2000 Girls U-11 team took top honours.

Vaughan Rebels take second game

The Vaughan Rebels won their second Southwestern Ontario Football Association of League game in as many outings with a 24-6 road win over the Twin City Warhawks in Kitchener Saturday.

Marco DiTomasso scored a pair of majors for the Reb-els, who held an 18-6 half-time lead.

Tryell Campbell and Kaz Bieniak each added one touchdown.

Occupying first place in the league’s White Tier stand-ings, the Rebels will take to the road for a road game ver-sus the Cambridge Wolver-ines Saturday at 6 p.m.

The Wolverines are in last place with an 0-2 mark.

In peewee action, the Reb-els travelled to London and suffered a 42-6 loss to the Junior Mustangs Saturday.

Now 0-2 on the season, the Rebels peewees’ next scheduled game is on the road against the Guelph Bears Sept. 16 at 1 p.m.

This year, the ride features four events: a 160-kilometre ride, a 100-km ride, a 25-km ride and a Kids Fun Ride for children ages two to 12.

Riders will roll through Caledon, King, the Holland Marsh, East Gwillimbury and Vaughan –depending on which of the four rides they sign up for.

The money raised through this year’s ride will go to sup-port three childhood cancer camps: Camp Trillium, Camp Quality and Camp Oochi-geas.

“I like how the ride is man-aged and I like how all the proceeds raised go directly to the three camps,” Mr. Jenah said.

He is taking part in the 160-km ride and has been training for the event all sum-mer.

Mr. Jenah estimates over the past six years or so he’s

helped raise nearly $50,000 for the Ride for Karen.

This year he and his team are aiming to bring in anoth-er $10,000.

“It’s a very well organized ride. It goes very well before, during and after,” Mr. Jenah said. “It’s been successful. They started out with 35 rid-ers and they’ve got 350 to 400 riders now. And it’s a great cause.”

Drivers avoided the area of Bowes and Rivermede roads yesterday after-noon as heavy rain flooded the intersection.

There were unconfirmed reports of vehicles stuck there and crews closed the roads.

Rain was expected to continue into the evening and a severe thunder-storm watch had been issued for Vaughan, Richmond Hill and Markham by Environment Canada.

Other closures had also been reported by York Region, including Hwy. 7 eastbound at Hwy. 404, Warden Avenue, north of 16th Avenue in Markham and Wellington Road between Murray Drive and George Drive in Aurora.

Alberga signed to RangersDomenic Alberga is on the move again. The 20-year-old Vaughan native will be playing for his

third Ontario Hockey League club after he was acquired by the Kitchener Rangers from the Sarnia Sting, the Rangers announced Wednesday.

In exchange, the Rangers will send a sixth round pick in the 2013 OHL priority selection, that was acquired from Windsor, to the Sting. A six-foot, one-inch, 196-pound centre, Alberga was originally drafted by the Brampton Battalion in the fifth round of the 2009 OHL priority selection and played for them in the 2009-10 and 2010-11 campaigns.

He was then dealt to the Sarnia Sting by the Battalion dur-ing the offseason for a fourth-round pick in the 2012 OHL priority selection.

In 66 regular season games with the Sting, Alberga amassed 17 goals and 18 assists in 66 regular season games.

He also collected four assists in six post-season tilts with the Sting.

York students struggle with mathBY TERESA LATCHFORD

[email protected]

York Region schools will be looking at mathematics a little more closely following the release of the provincial standardized testing results.

The Education Qual-ity and Accountability Office released the test results of grades 3 and 6 reading, writ-ing and arithmetic and Grade 9 mathematics.

While the board-by-board and school-by-school num-bers won’t be released until next month, the provincial results show students are making progress in literacy, but falling behind when it comes to numeracy.

The number of students making the provincial stan-dard in Grades 3 and 6 read-ing and writing increased, but

there was no improvement in Grade 3 mathematics. There was a decrease in Grade 6 mathematics and less than half of applied mathematics students in Grade 9 are meet-ing the standard.

“The province has identi-fied math as an area of focus and we concur,” York Region District School Board curric-ulum superintendent Beate Planche said.

She couldn’t speak specifi-cally about the results of the local school board because they have yet to be released, but the board’s strategy includes a push in numeracy.

She attributes the drop in the math numbers to the subject becoming more complex, with higher expec-tations.

Math is no longer just a series of numbers and for-

mulas to memorize. It now requires critical thinking and problem solving skills, she said.

“We need to delve deep-er into mathematics, but change isn’t always made in leaps and bounds. It takes time,” Ms Planche said.

On provincial and interna-tional tests, Ontario elemen-tary students are showing average achievement when it comes to math and EQAO board chairperson Brian Des-biens fears the risk of falling behind international peers is becoming a reality.

He urges the provincial education system to address the issue with a focused sense of urgency.

School board and indi-vidual school results will be released on eqao.com Sept. 12.

BY KIM [email protected]

It was back to school as usual for teachers in York Region pub-lic school classrooms yesterday, but the head of York’s elementary teachers union warns if simmer-ing tension and anger continue to build, that lull won’t last.

York Region Elementary Teach-ers’ Federation of Ontario president David Clegg is promising parents the first month of school, at least, should be free of labour disrup-tion.

More than 7,000 public school teachers and 3,600 Catholic teach-ers have returned to the classroom,

but for many in the public system, it is with a sense of unease over what’s to come.

While the separate school board has signed on with the provin-cial deal reached with its teach-ers’ union, the public board and its teachers, like their counterparts elsewhere in Ontario, are in a dead-lock with the education ministry.

The Liberal government, trying to tackle its deficit, wants to pass legislation that would freeze teach-ers’ salaries, except for grid move-ment, impose three unpaid days off, reduce by half the number of sick days to 10 and stop the bank-ing of unused sick pay.

Education Minister Laurel Bro-ten says Bill 115, set for third read-ing Monday, saves education dol-lars to allow full-day kindergarten and smaller class sizes.

“Working together with our teachers, students and parents, we are making Ontario a global leader in education,” Ontario Premier Dal-ton McGuinty said Tuesday.

“It’s important to protect these gains and keep putting our stu-dents first in order to build a bright future for our children and grand-children.”

The legislation, the Liberals said, is necessary to ensure a smooth return to school.

But Mr. Clegg called that “politi-cal grandstanding” designed to con-fuse byelection voters in Vaughan

and Kitchener-Waterloo.The teachers always planned to

resume their duties as usual this week, he said.

“Nothing will happen negatively in September,” he said. “I can tell you there will not be any disruption due to strike in September.”

But as teachers grow more anx-ious, frustrated and angry, some are are balking at extra volunteer duties, he said.

Teachers have e-mailed him to say they are uncomfortable volun-teering extra time in the strained environment, he said.

The union is not advocating teachers opt out of extra-curricu-lars.

“We’ve told them not to do any-thing other than do their best,” he said. “People will make their choic-es.

“Right now, they’re going on the excitement and adrenalin of a new group of kids in the classroom, but the longer it goes on, it definitely has a wearing effect.”

Mr. Clegg, former head of the provincial federation, said he field-ed a constant stream of phone calls yesterday from teachers worried about what they should do if they are sick or in an automobile acci-dent in the coming weeks.

“We had no answers for them because legislation has not passed and it’s not clearly explained in the legislation.”

There are also concerns that the government could claw back sick days and salary increases that came with this week’s paycheques. Exist-ing contracts expired Friday, but without a new deal, are automati-cally rolled over Sept. 1.

Teachers are wondering what to do with that salary increase, some setting it aside in separate accounts in case the government asks for it back.

“We’ve told them to consider the implications,” he said.

He said his union is most dis-turbed by statements in Bill 115 indicating no decisions made by the minister or Lieutenant Governor in Council [the cabinet] under the act shall be questioned or reviewed in any court.

“Since when do governments in democratic countries try to pass laws that prevent judicial review?”

Meanwhile, a petition asking for Ms Broten’s resignation or apology has gathered about 6,200 signa-tures, including one from a woman identifying herself as Melissa Hard-ing, from Unionville, who com-mented, “teachers weren’t expect-ing to get an increase, but they were expecting to negotiate ... not be dictated to.

“You deliberately set out to ram this bill through from the very beginning and vilify the teaching profession. Shame on you.”

Teachers’ union promises no disruptions this month

East Humber Trail ready for official opening

Nearby residents are already enjoying it, but the East Humber Trail in Oak Ridges will be officially opened next weekend.

Situated north of King Road between Parker Avenue and Verdi Road, with entranc-es off Parker Avenue, Vitlor Drive and Verdi Road, the

recreational walking and hik-ing trail boasts an observa-tion deck, three boardwalks, four bridges and numerous seats and benches to admire and soak in the vegetation and landforms of the Oak Ridges Moraine.

The lands surrounding the trail are comprised of old fields with some extensive woody vegetation, as well as forested areas with newer plantings and mature, mixed forests.

The trail also passes through wetland and wet meadow communities of the East Humber River, which bisects the property diago-nally from the southeast to the northwest. These lands provide a diversity of habi-tats for many wildlife species, particularly birds, includ-ing the Black-Billed Cuckoo, Yellow-Billed Cuckoo, Ring-Necked Pheasant and Red-Breasted Nuthatch, which are all uncommon in the Greater Toronto Area.

Activities at the Saturday, Sept. 15 official opening from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. will include an Earth Rangers presenta-tion Bring Back the Wild, shows for children and a free barbecue. The formal ribbon-cutting will begin at 12 noon. For more information, visit richmondhill.ca

York Region’s chairperson is inching closer to being an elected position.

Second reading of a private member’s bill in the legislature was debated and received unanimous support from all three parties yes-terday.

“York Region has a deficiency in democracy,” said Richmond Hill MPP Reza Moridi, who tabled the bill.

“It has nothing to do with the

current chair(person, Bill Fisch); it has to do with bringing democracy to York Region.”

If a final reading is passed, Mr. Moridi’s bill would amend the Municipal Act to dictate that York’s chairperson be elected, as opposed to being appointed by regional council.

Mr. Fisch is a “good politician, a good man and he’s done a good job”, but the lengthy transit strike served as an illustration for Thorn-hill MPP Peter Shurman as to why York should have had an elected

chairperson. It’s a tall order to govern York

Region effectively and the chairper-son has “incredible” and “sweeping” powers, with not much account-ability to the taxpayers, he said.

“It’s almost like a tsar,” Mr. Shur-man added.

The bill is contentious and some York politicians have a vested inter-est in keeping things they way they are, Beaches-East York MPP Michael Prue said.

Markham recently voted against Regional Councillor Jim Jones’

motion to support the election of a regional chairperson.

Mr. Prue has known Mr. Fisch for more than 20 years and if Mr. Fisch decided to run for election as regional chairperson, many people would vote for him, Mr. Prue said.

“It’s about giving people the ulti-mate power to make decisions,” he said. “If you are afraid of the people as a politician, you are not to be in the game.”

Representative democracy is absent in the current system, Oak Ridges-Markham MPP Helena Jac-

zek said. The average person in York is

unaware of the chairperson’s role and an election would provide an opportunity for the candidates to put forward their plans, she said.

Newmarket-Aurora MPP Frank Klees went further, saying Mr. Fisch’s title of chairperson and CEO is a conflict, as the two functions are different.

The two roles should be separat-ed in the best interest of the region, Mr. Klees said.

Growing support to elect York Region’s chairperson

Durham cops have arrested two accused ringleaders in what they say is a sprawling criminal organi-zation that was based in Pickering and committed thefts throughout Ontario and Quebec.

Two other suspects are wanted and on the lam in Europe, police said in announcing the conclusion of Project Mansfield, an investi-gation that began late last year in Durham Region and soon involved police and customs officials in Can-ada and the United States.

Police have recovered $85,000 in cash, as well as stolen property and credit cards, and evidence of $2 million of social services claims made by participants in the organi-zation, Durham police Chief Mike Ewles said this morning. Police have also identified $1 million worth of “suspicious” wire transactions with

overseas destinations.“This is by far the largest inves-

tigation of its kind for the Durham Regional Police Service,” the chief said, calling it “a major break-through in an organized crime ring that’s been active throughout southern Ontario.”

The operation saw immigrants brought to Canada from Romania, assisted with applying for welfare, and then enlisted to act in roving bands of thieves who spread out across Ontario and Quebec, police allege.

Durham cops linked a large number of distraction-type thefts that targeted jewelry and conve-nience stores, as well as individuals including seniors, the chief said. Eventually investigators homed in on a local address from which it’s believed the organization was run.

“Our investigation led us to a family living on Denby Drive in

Pickering and an associate on East-dale Drive in Toronto,” Chief Ewles said.

Durham cops closed in on the main suspects Aug. 9. Others avoided arrest by fleeing to Europe, police said. They are believed to be in Germany, Inspector Bruce Town-ley said.

In total, 34 suspects were arrest-ed on more than 263 charges. The investigation revealed as many as 400 people connected to the ring, police said.Police continue to inves-tigate crimes that may be attributed to the gang.

“Individual victims may not be aware this group has hit them,” Chief Ewles said, vowing to “take this investigation wherever it needs to go.”

During the briefing reporters were shown a surveillance video that depicted several suspects swarming at once into a Whitby

convenience store. As some mem-bers of the group distracted the lone clerk with questions and small purchases, others infiltrated an inventory room and stuffed bags of loot under their loose skirts before leaving.

The method was just one employed by the band of thieves, said Detective Sergeant Cathy Bawden. Other scams saw them targeting individuals on the street and switching valuable jewelry with cheap fakes, and by following elder-ly shoppers and stealing debit cards and PIN numbers, she said.

Another scam saw participants flagging down motorists by pre-tending to be in distress, then sell-ing expensive-looking jewelry for cash to get out of a jam. The jew-elry turned out to be worthless, she said.

As many as 150 unsolved crimes might be attributed to the gang,

she said.“Are they related to this cell? We

believe and suspect they are, but we can’t say that for certain,” Det.-Sgt. Bawden said.

Chief Ewles said the ring was highly organized and efficient, lur-ing participants from Romania with promises of a better life in Canada and then enlisting them in criminal pursuits.

“People would arrive on a Thurs-day and by the following Saturday would be involved in distraction thefts,” he said.

The investigation began in Dur-ham Region last November but soon grew to include participa-tion by the RCMP, OPP, Interpol and police in Montreal, Toronto, London, Sudbury and York and Peel regions. Also involved were the Canada Border Services Agency, US Customs and Homeland Security agencies and the FBI.

Elusive world title spells relief for hurlerBy Michael [email protected]

Paul Koert was wondering if he would ever be part of a fastball team that would win a coveted International Soft-ball Congress title.

After pitching for teams in the past finishing as high as third, he never got any closer.

But the 33-year-old York Region native and veteran left-handed hurler’s fortunes changed recently when he suited up for a Jarvis, Ont. team, the Broken Bow Trav-elers.

With the Travelers advanc-ing to the final, they laid claim to the championship after defeating the second-ranked Hill United Chiefs (Six Nations) 8-6 in a thrilling game that went eight innings in Midland, Mich.

Koert earned his keep after entering the game in relief when his club trailed 4-1 through the first three innings.

He went the remaining five innings and surrendered just five hits and two earned runs while fanning six bat-ters to earn his third win of the tournament against no losses.

Koert calls the win the pinnacle of his competitive softball career – almost like being part of a hockey team that wins the Stanley Cup.

Making the accomplish-ment even more special for Koert was that he returned to playing this year after taking a sabbatical last year due to work commitments.

“This championship com-pares to no other,” said Koert, who joined the team this year through the encouragement of friends on the squad. “I’ve played in 11 ISC champion-ships and there’s no doubt this is the hardest champion-ship to win.

“Over my career I’ve won six or seven national titles, but the worlds have eluded me for 11 years. I’ve been on a team that finished third a few times, fourth a bunch of times and fifth. So it was extremely exciting to get this one.”

Citing his team was ranked third entering the tourna-ment, Koert felt his club had a legitimate opportunity in laying claim to the coveted title.

But it certainly wasn’t easy as his club reached the final by coming through the back

door after they lost to Hill United 3-1 in a round-robin game Aug. 16.

With that loss, the Travel-ers were relegated to the los-ers’ side and had to win out if they hoped to win the title.

The Travelers did just that as they mercied the Toron-to Gators 8-1 the following day, with Koert tossing four innings and allowing just one hit and one earned run while fanning four batters to earn his second win of the tourna-ment.

The big test for the Trav-elers though came in their quarter-final game when they played and edged the top-ranked Clifton Park Gremlins (New York) 5-4 and did it with two out in the bottom of the seventh inning in their quar-ter-final game.

Later that same day, the Travelers defeated the Har-risburg Power (Pennsylvania) 5-1 in their semifinal game and then gained a berth in the final that was played just hours later.

For the Travelers team, it marked the third straight year they captured the ISC title – a feat Koert cited had not been done in 55 years.

House party turns uglySeveral police officers were injured and

cruisers damaged during a call just after midnight at a house party on Church Street in York Region Sept. 1.

York Regional Police were called to a residence by a teenager hosting a party in a Keswick neighbourhood.

The teen asked police to assist with her house party that was getting out of control and said several unwanted guests had crashed her party, causing fights and throwing beer bottles.

While officers were escorting people out of the house, other guests objected and began to fight with the police.

Officers were pushed down the front steps and struck by flying bottles and piec-es of wood, Sgt. Gary Phillips said.

The police retreated to their cruisers and called for assistance.

While awaiting back-up, suspects pelted cruisers with bottles and debris from the front yard.

Officers arrested seven suspects and sent others home.

Some of the officers suffered minor injuries and were treated at Southlake Regional Health Centre.

Two marked police vehicles were also damaged during this time, police said.
