W hen interior designer Jennifer Scott stumbled upon a vintage wedding blanket in Marrakesh, Morocco, she knew exactly what she was going to do with it. “This beautiful blanket is now hanging on the wall in my bedroom, creating a stunning feature wall” says the principal of A Good Chick to Know. Whether you call it an accent or feature wall, incorporating one in your condominium is a perfect way to highlight or emphasize a room’s architecture or to instill a sense of extraordinary in an otherwise plain room. “With a feature wall, you have the ability to inject your own individuality into your space,” says Scott. Using Texture Adding textures such as brick, wood or other materials are a great way to incorporate that extra something without too much in the way of imagery or vibrant colour, which only work well in a large space. RECLAIMED WOOD: The rise in reclaimed and whitewash wood is a movement that is growing stronger in BC. Scott says she’s seen a huge trend in reclaimed barn-wood accent walls. BRICK: A brick wall can add untold timeless beauty in a room or can look really out of place, advises Scott. She adds, “I believe original brick lends itself best to a heritage building which has been converted to lofts or apartments.” CONCRETE: The rise of the industrial look has made concrete a popular choice for a unique feature wall. “I love the warmth that a textured concrete wall can bring to a room with its rough finish that is one of a kind,” says Scott. WALLPAPER: There is a huge revival in wallpaper feature walls, especially in custom wallpaper designs. Wallpaper designer Markella Mildenberger, principal of The Red Palette, advises to select tones and colours pulled from the undertones in a key piece of furnishing or a hard finish in your space. Achieving the Wow Factor Whether you are thinking about full-sized painted or printed murals, wallpapers, fabrics, textures or large- scale art for a feature wall, there are certain things to contemplate first. Mural-sized images from photos can add amazing drama and interest. However, Mildenberger advises to err on the side of caution when selecting imagery and make sure all copyrights are adhered to. And remember, an outdoor or scenic image can do wonders to relax, but your décor and furnishings will need to forever complement this. Scott agrees with Mildenberger and adds, “Remember that with wallpaper for smaller spaces, large-scale patterns with less structure (stripes are passé) work best.” She explains, “A two-foot repeat rather than a six-inch repeat gives the pattern room to breathe and looks great in a condo.     Its a spring tradition: BCs annual Georgie Awards. As gardens burst into bloom, British Columbias residential building industry experts gather in Vancouver to celebrate the best of the provinces builders, develop-ers, renovators, and marketers the people behind the innovations and designs that de ne our place among global trendsetters.

    More than 600 people were on hand at the Hyatt Regency to applaud this years 49 winners. Projects ranged from compact condos to estate mansions but all shared a dynamic sense of creativ-ity and forward-thinking vision. Once again, no single company or project dominated, and many rst-time entrants took home a gold statue or two.

    The Two Sweeps By the numbers, Naikoon

    Contracting Ltd and My House Design/Build Team Ltd were the

    evenings top winners with ve golds each.

    Naikoons Winton House, win-ner in the $750,000 to $1.5 mil-lion custom home category, helped propel the company to its second Custom Home Builder of the Year Grand Georgie Award. President Joe Geluch credits the clients commit-ment to sustainable, green design and willingness to think outside the box as signi cant contributing factors.

    The Grand Georgie for Residential Renovator of the Year went to My House Design/Build Team, in part for Hillside Splendor, a down-to-the-studs rebuild in West Vancouver mansion. The 12-year-old homes seismic upgrading, new heating mechanical and open-concept oor plan gave the house BuiltGreen Platinum certi cation, virtually unheard of in a renovation.

    Triple Winners After being named Best Multi-

    Family Low Rise Development and taking top honours for Best Interior Design Display Suite, Royce by Forge Properties took home the Grand Georgie for Residential Community of the Year.

    Portrait Homes also saw a triple win. Once again honoured with a Grand Georgie for Single Family Production Home Builder of the Year, the Richmond-based company added another customer service accolade to their already lengthy list, this time for the Grand Georgie for Customer Satisfaction (Single

    Family). For me, customer choice awards are always the most mean-ingful because they are based on direct customer feedback, says Rob Grimm, president. This is one way we know we are meeting the ever-changing needs and desires of our homebuyers.

    Kindred Construction was the evenings nal three-time winner. Projects spanned a luxurious mid-rise condominium (South Creek Landing), a $3 million custom home and Kitsilano Neighbourhood House.

    Properties received two Grand Georgies including their sixth Customer Satisfaction Award in the Multi Family category since 2008, while Zenterra Developments got the nod for the coveted Multi Family Home Builder of the Year Grand Georgie.

    Jaheny Custom Builders was

    one of an exciting group of new Georgie entrants who took home gold this year. The dazzling Tuscan Re ections manor blew the comple-tion away in both the landscaping and outdoor living categories by transforming an unsightly gravel pit into a one-of-a-kind private resort home.

    In Shaughnessy, Carol Faan Interiors Ltd replicated the glamour of an English estate home with lav-ish use of marble and 22-foot diam-eter foyer chandeliers, winning gold in the Best Interior Design Custom Residence category.

    The Georgie Award nalists are as diverse as our member-ship, says Gordon Bliss, president of the Canadian Home Builders Association of BC. The strength of this association is in our members over 1,600 strong in all areas of BC.
