    World Health Day 2014

    Preventing vector-borne diseases

April 7th 2014 - Small bite, big threat

More than half the worlds population is at risk from diseasessuch as malaria, dengue, leishmaniasis, Lyme disease, schistosomiasis, and yellow fever, carried by mosquitoes, flies, ticks, water snails andother vectors. Every year, more than one billion people are infectedand more than one million die from vector-borne diseases.

This World Health Day 7 April WHO is highlighting the seriousand increasing threat of vector-borne diseases, with the slogan Smallbite, big threat.

The Organization also emphasizes that these diseases are entirelypreventable. Newly published "A global brief on vector-borne diseases"outlines steps that governments, community groups and families canall take to protect people from infection.

A global health agenda that gives higher priority to vector controlcould save many lives and avert much suffering. Simple, cost-effectiveinterventions like insecticide-treated bed nets and indoor sprayinghave already saved millions of lives, ,No one in the 21st centuryshould die from the bite of a mosquito, a sandfly, a blackfly or a tick.

Vector-borne diseases affect the poorest populations, particularlywhere there is a lack of access to adequate housing, safe drinkingwater and sanitation. Malnourished people and those with weakenedimmunity are especially susceptible.

Within the past two decades, many important vector-borne diseaseshave also re-emerged or spread to new parts of the world. Environmentalchanges, a massive increase in international travel and trade, changesin agricultural practices and rapid unplanned urbanization are causingan increase in the number and spread of many vectors worldwide andmaking new groups of people, notably tourists and business travellers, vulnerable.

Mosquito-borne dengue, for example, is now found in 100 countries, putting more than 2.5 billion people - over 40% of the world's population- at risk. Dengue has recently been reported in China, Portugal and thestate of Florida, in the United States of America.

On World Health Day 2014, WHO is calling for a renewed focus onvector control and better provision of safe water, sanitation and hygiene key strategies outlined in WHOs 2011 Roadmap for the control, elimination and eradication of neglected tropical diseases, which setstargets for the period 20122020.

Yoga, for long, has been considered aspassive, monotonous and traditional form ofexercise. The truth is that the form of yoga widelytaught in India has lost its freshness and spontaneity. Many people who have been practicing yoga for 20years, are still pot-bellied and unfit. The questionthat comes naturally is this: How could an overweightperson without strength, stamina or agility couldmove towards the higher practices of yogaeffectively?

Based on the residual valueof the old hardware determinedby the recycle partner, theparticipant can use the proceedsto obtain monthly credit onWindows Azure, based on anupfront initial commitment.

SMBs are the force driversof the Indian economy andrequire agile, flexible and scalableinfrastructure to help managetheir costs well. This is a fantasticopportunity for SMBs to getvalue for their legacy hardwareand at the same time leap to thecloud using Windows Azure. This transition will help themreduce maintenance costs and getfuture ready on a modernplatform. said Karan Bajwa -Managing Director, MicrosoftIndia.

Windows Azure is an openand flexible platform on the cloudthat allows users to build, deployand manage applications on a

Microsoft-managed datacentre.Once SMBs have opted forWindows Azure usage based onthe exchange value of theirlegacy hardware [See Box] theywill be able to work with any ofMicrosofts Azure circle partnersto migrate and expand theirinfrastructure on Windows Azure. The Trade-In scheme is yetanother step in a series ofinitiatives that Microsoft hasundertaken to enable SMBs toleverage the opportunity andvalue that cloud offers.

As we work with SMBs, it isclear that they are looking atgrowing their businesses withminimal investments. This is agreat opportunity for them toconvert their existing capitalexpenditure to operatingexpenditure and scale as theygrow. said Phani Kondepudi CEO 3X3 Connect.

We believe this is a gamechanger for our SMB customerswho have deployed their legacyservers in a co- located model totransition to a public cloud. saidAjith George- Co-founder andDirector, Sysfore.

    Microsoft announces Trade-In Scheme for

SMBs to leap to the Cloud with Windows Azure A psychologist raised a glass of water, and asked his class :How heavy is this glass of water?

    He got various answers.

He smiled & replied, The weight actually does not matter.

If I hold it for a minute, its not a problem. If I hold it for anhour, Ill have an ache in my arm. If I hold it for a day, my armwill feel numb and paralyzed. In each case, the weight of theglass doesnt change, but the longer I hold it, the heavier itbecomes.

He continued, The stresses and worries in life are like thatglass of water. Think about them for a while and nothing happens.Think about them a bit longer and they begin to hurt. And if youthink about them all day long, you will feel paralyzed incapableof doing anything.

Its important to remember to let go of your stresses. Everyday, early in the evening, put all the days burdens down.

Dont carry them to the next day. Start the next day with aprayer & a smile, and see life smile back at you . . .
