Volume 9 Pro Edi on—User Guide
Rev. 1 Nov 22nd 2010
System Requirements.
Volume 9 Pro requires a PC or Mac running Adobe Photoshop CS3 or later. Earlier versions and Photoshop
Elements are not supported.
Why the Pro version?
Volume 9 Pro adds new ac ons to the exis ng Volume 9 and adds the size awareness features of the other 1clickac ons ‘Pro’
series for greater consistency across a range of image sizes. Tradi onal ac ons invariably offer a compromise since there is no
way of knowing if the ac on is going to be run on an image of 24mp or 3mp. 1‐clickac ons ‘Pro’ ac ons combine standard
ac ons with javascript to automa cally apply suitable se ngs whatever the image size. To the user this is invisible and once
installed they can be used in the same way as any other Photoshop ac on.
Installa on.
Installa on is a two step process; running the automated installer and then installing the ac ons into the Photoshop ac on
pale e as usual.
The zip download contains 2 folders, one for Mac one for Windows, please make sure you install the correct set of ac ons for
your opera ng system.
Windows installa on.
Open the Windows folder in the 1clickV9PRO zip file and run the program 1clickV9PRO‐1.0‐windows‐installer.exe, accept the
defaults and the installer will copy the necessary javascript support files. When the installer has finished you can then install
the V9PRO.atn ac on into Photoshop as usual. You can run the ac ons direct from the ac ons pale e or from 1clickac ons
Ac on Sta on program. The scripts will not appear on the Photoshop scripts menu, this is normal and doesn’t cons tute an
error.
Mac Installa on.
Open the Mac folder in the 1clickV9PRO.zip file and run the 1clickV9PRO‐1.0‐osx‐installer.app OSX installer, accept the defaults
and the installer will copy the necessary javascript support files. When the installer has finished you can then install the
V9PRO.atn ac on into Photoshop as usual. You can run the ac ons direct from the ac ons pale e or from 1clickac ons Ac on
Sta on program. The scripts will not appear on the Photoshop scripts menu, this is normal and doesn’t cons tute an error.
The ac ons.
The Volume 9 Pro set includes all the ac ons from the exis ng Volume 9 set (with size‐awareness added) plus the following
new ac ons:
SunBurn ChemMix SunShade Lupin Minted CUISTBAW
CUISTBAW Brown P1 Gritless Grunge Burn Edges Fade Edges HighLightHelper +
H/L Helper Brush
Most of the ac ons contain a mixture of ‘tradi onal’ ac on and javascript. If it looks as though your ac ons only contain one or
two steps it usually means that the ac ons is there just to call the javascripts and all the hard work is done by the script behind
the scenes.
From a user point of view this makes no difference and the ac on can be just run as you would any other ac on.
Adjus ng the strength of the ac ons.
Most of the ac ons allow you to modify the strength of the result by crea ng the adjustment on a new layer(s) in the ac on
pale e. As well as preserving the integrity of the original image this also allows you to vary the opacity of the effect layer to
increase or decrease the effect of the ac on.
O en you will find that the effect is a li le too much and you will find that reducing the opacity gives be er results.
Close up of the Photoshop layer
pale e with opacity at 80% ‐ reduc‐
ing this se ng will tone down the
results.
In many cases the ac on will also
create a mask (the white box on the
top layer) so that you can paint
away the effect from certain areas
of the image.
A common use of this would be with
the so ‐focus glow type ac ons
where you might want to paint away
the effect from the subjects eyes.
Use a black brush on the layer mask
to paint away the effect. Remember
that you can change the opacity of
brushes as well as layers.
The new ac ons.
ChemMix—creates a gentle cross processed effect for a vintage type look.
ChemMix
Creates the effect on a new layer with a layer mask to remove the effect if it is too strong on faces etc.
SunBurn
Adds a so warmth to images.
Sunburn
Creates effect on new
layer with layer mask.
Sun Shadow
Sun Shade
Creates a new layer for the effect with a layer mask.
Adds a glowing orange nt to images.
CUISTBAW
CUISTBAW
Creates new layer—reduce opacity to lessen effect.
Adds moody subdued color tones with dark edges for a drama c effect.
CUISTBAW Brown
CUISTBAW Brown
A companion ac on to CUISTBAW but creates a warm toned BW image.
“CUISTBAW” ‐ “Cheer up, it’s supposed to be a wedding”
Gritless Grunge
A similar ac on to the exis ng ‘Gri y Grunge’ ac on but with less grit. Combine this ac on with CUISTBAW for an even more
drama c effect.
Gritless Grunge
Creates enhanced detail and punch to images—similar to a mild
HDR/Tone‐Mapped effect.
Creates the effect
on a new layer
with a default
strength of 75%.
HighLight Helper/HighLightHelper Brush These ac ons aim to bring back detail in
highlight areas. The difference between
the two is that the HighLightHelper ac on
applies the effect to all the highlights in
the picture whereas the ‘brush’ version
requires you to paint over the highlights
where you want to bring back details.
Use a white brush on the layer mask to
locally bring back details.
Minted
Adds contrast and greenish hues.
Minted
Lupin
A companion ac on to ‘Minted’ but with a shi towards pink/magenta hues.
The effect is applied on a new layer—you
might want to reduce the opacity of the
‘lupin’ layer.
Burn Edges/ Fade Edges
As the name suggests these ac on darken or lighten the edges of the picture. These ac ons will usually be used a er the other
ac ons to apply the finishing touches.
To reduce the effect lower the opacity, to
increase the effect you can run the ac on
more than once.
P1.
Adds a so ness to the image without losing all detail—although a layer mask is created to paint away the effect6 if necessary.
Effect is applied to a new layer.
Use a so black brush on the layer mask if necessary to bring
back details.
New ac ons summary
All the new ac ons included feature the size awareness features where necessary. This is especially useful on ac ons that have
a blur or sharpen step in them—it’s surprising how many ac ons do. A 20pc Gaussian blur has a much greater effect on a 1mp
image than id does on a 24mp image. These ac ons automa cally assess the image size before they run and where necessary
will change the se ngs accordingly without the user having to change the image size or have mul ple versions of the same
ac on.
The remainder of this document contains details of the ac ons included with the original Volume 9 release. The size awareness
features have been added to the exis ng ac ons as well the new ones.
Pic-in-Pic Creates a color print overlay over a black and white background. Run the action on a coloured image and the action will stop to ask you to draw a rectangle over the area you want to remain in color.
Click here to change the settings for the white border and drop shadow.
Click on the word “Stroke” to open up the stroke dialog you can change the width of the white border or even change the color.
ColorPunch
The ColorPunch action intensifies colors giving the image more imme-diate impact. This action should prove useful in landscape and outdoor portraiture. The action is adjustable by changing the opacity of the top layer in the usual 1clickactions style and the background layer is left untouched.
HighLight Punch Similar to ColorPunch but more sub-tle as it targets the highlights. There is less chance of blocking up the shad-ows with this action. Again the strength can be adjusted.
CatWalk Light CatWalk Dark CatWalk Warm Mono These 3 actions quick the image a contrast boost whilst applying a slight skin softening. The CatWalk Warm Mono applies the same effect as CatWalk Light but converts to a warm BW making it suitable for a general purpose BW conversion action for portraits. The differences between the Light and Dark versions are quite subtle.
OldTimer As its name suggests this action creates an old fashioned look to images with a grainy, high con-trast and brown tone—the image remains sharp however. The look is often complimented by the use of one of the 1click vignette or edge actions.
BoxBrownie This action lets your multi-thousand dollar camera imitate a junk store camera. The action creates multiple layers so you can create a color, BW or sepia image by running the action once and turning off the layers as required.
The slight edge darken-ing is automatically applied by the action. Only the centre of the image remains (fairly) sharp.
Biscuit Tin— This action aims to simulate the look of a pinhole camera (without the enormous depth of field). You can consider this as an even poorer quality camera than the BoxBrownie. Traditionally pinholes could be made from shoe boxes or biscuit tins.
The edges show consider-able darkening and distor-tion with the centre remain-ing a little sharper.
Acid Drop Creates a cross-processed effect on color images and also an effective Yellow/Blue split tone if run on a BW image. The strength of the effect can be adjusted in either case.
Dramatica Warm & Cold Could be considered as a more intense version of the CatWalk actions but this action gives a more dramtic and sharper result. Again you can adjust the strength as required. Often the lower strengths will work better depend-
GrittyGrunge Not the most flattering action for portraiture but is effective on urban or fashion type shots. The option to vary the amount of grain is provided as well as the ability to adjust the strength of the effect overall.
The Tone With No Name—This action creates a BW conversion with a peach/brown tone depending on the blending mode. The default mode of normal gives a peach tone but good results can also be obtained with “color” mode.
Try changing the blending mode to “Color” for a brown tone. Alter the opacity to suit.
Louis—There was a good reason why this action was called Louis but I’ve totally forgotten what it was. Any how it creates a soft, faded, grainy peach toned image that works well with the right subject.
The new Soft Glow actions: Dream Glow, Pastel Glow, NewSoft, YAG, MilkShake, Angel Glow. These offer a range of styles that are ideal for weddings and portraiture. Many of the effects are more subtle than the PopGlow range of actions included with Volume 1 of 1clickactions.
Original Pastel Glow DreamGlow
NewSoft YAG MilkShake
Angel Glow
As usual these action offer the ability to adjust the strength. This is the layer palette after running the Pastel Glow ac-tion. The HighKey effect, softness and the paleness of the image can all be modi-fied. The effect can be ap-plied locally by painting on the layer masks.
The Smooth IR actions. A group of 5 actions that create a slight infrared tonality without the grain and contrast. The range comprises Smooth IR (standard BW), Smooth IR Tint (BW with a little color added back), Sepia IR (a brown toned version), Blue IR (a deep blue tone) and Copper IR (a reddish brown)
Original Smooth IR Tint Smooth IR
The Sepia, Copper and Blue IR actions should be considered more as effects as the highlights tend to be blown so choose the subject care-fully. Adding a luminosity mask may prove useful with these actions.
Color Vitality — a very simple action that is very useful with close up portraits as it can improve skin tones. The colors will look slightly less vivid so it could prove a good starting point before using any of the other por-trait actions.
