THE BS IN HUMAN SERVICES:A DEGREE WHOSE

TIME HAS COME

The United States is becoming increasingly a serviceeconomy, and colleges and universities across the nationare responding to the demand for augmented knowledgeand technical sophistication by developing HumanServices programs. Five years ago Dr. Lynn Mulkey,USCB Professor of Sociology, dreamed of bringing a four-year program in Human Services to South Carolina andto USC Beaufort. To aid in crafting an exceptional pro-gram, she surveyed Beaufort County about the knowl-edge and skills needed for professional level positionsin the field and reviewed the most successful of thenation’s some 225 human services degree programs.

“The Human Services program has been the perfect

interdisciplinary degree to prepare me for working

with youth. I can eventually serve as an advocate

to those who are suffering from social injustices.”

Alice Atkins, fourth-year student

Mission Statement: USCB’s Human Services Program prepares human serviceprofessionals. Graduates will have the requisite abstract knowledge in thesocial/behavioral sciences as well as in applied/practical/technical knowledgeto serve their prospective employers. As part of a new and burgeoning field ofstudy nationally and internationally, this Liberal Arts Interdisciplinary degreeprepares its students to fill an employment gap in an increasingly sophisticatedglobal economy.

The program’s internships are part of a county alliance and a community-basedmodel that allows students to learn from and serve the needs of regionalemployers in sustaining and enhancing quality of life. Whether work is in achurch, a school, a legal office, social services, government offices, planning andenvironmental protection agencies, hospitals, mental health offices, or in a multi-tude of other contexts, human service graduates are prepared for work at thebaccalaureate level or can pursue graduate studies in a variety of areas. The only baccalaureate program in Human Services offered in South Carolina’spublic colleges and universities, this program’s many online course offeringspermit students to complete the degree from wherever they reside throughoutand outside the region. No degree is more promising to graduates and thecommunities they will serve than the Bachelor of Science in Human Services.
