The Way of the Chimp A new way to think and work

The Way of the Chimp is a unique programme that brings the benefits of Mindfulness to the workplace. Using authentic mindfulness practices backed by scientific research, we focus on five essential work place qualities, cultivating leadership skills, strategic thinking, productivity, self-management and interpersonal skills.

Nearly three decades of scientific research at medical centers all over the world proves that training in mindfulness can positively and profoundly affect participants' ability to reduce medical symptoms and psychological distress. THE WAY OF THE CHIMP EIGHT-

WEEK MINDFULNESS PROGRAMME

The Eight Week programme establishes

the roots of Mindfulness within an

organisation. It is an informative and

deeply engaging learning experience

suitable for all employees but particularly

aimed at key personnel where it is not

practical for the entire organisation to take

part. This highly interactive course is

delivered in-house over 8 weekly / 2 - 3

hour sessions, (time frames can be adapted

however we recommend this researched

formula for optimum results). Please see

MINDFUL TOOLS

The key to Mindfulness is being reminded

to be in the present. Awareness is increased

by regular Chimp-outs delivered by our

interactive App and reinforced by

Mindfulness posters, desk cards, mouse

mats and door signs.

The Way of the Chimp Web-based App

The Way of the Chimp Web based Mindfulness App brings high-

quality, integrated, organisation-wide support within the reach and

budget of every business. Whether used as a stand alone App or in

conjunction with The Way of the Chimp Programme, the App

reinforces and promotes mindfulness practice at work. and is an

essential part of the integration.

The App offers four main functions:

1. CONTENT - text, audio and video

delivery of The Way of the Chimp

programme

2. COMMUNICATIONS - daily ‘Chimp-outs’

remind, reinforce and action

3. ENGAGEMENT - interactive ‘Chimp-

The Eight-Week Mindfulness Programme at a glance

Week One

This orientation session will introduce the practice of mindfulness. We will discover how this secular, scientific, evidence-based practice has become an accepted part of mainstream healthcare, and determine how it can positively affect the quality of our everyday life at work and at home. We will learn the theory and evidence of mind-body ‘medicine’ and how to apply it in our lives with a special emphasis on what it means to be fully engaged in the present moment using experiential exercises such as mindful breathing and body scanning.

Week Two

Perception is key in mindfulness—how we see things determines in a large part how we respond. This week’s session and practice will ask employees to examine their perceptions, assumptions, and the way they view the world. We will learn to use our ‘felt-sense’ to cultivate a greater degree of awareness of our reaction to stressful situations. Changing the way we perceive and respond to challenges will impact the short and long term effects of stress on our mind and body.

Week Three

In this session, we will practice several distinct yet interrelated mindfulness practices—mindful qigong, sitting mindfully, and walking and driving with clarity. We will discover that there is both pleasure and power in being present and directly attend to and investigate how our experiences create such reactions as pleasure or discomfort in the mind and body.

Week Four

By practicing mindfulness, we cultivate curiosity and openness to the full range of our experience, and through this process our ability to pay attention becomes more flexible. This week our practice will focus on developing concentration and systematically expand our field of awareness. We’ll learn about the physiological and psychological basis of stress reactivity, and experience mindful strategies for responding in positive, proactive ways to stressful situations.

Week Five

Participants will be familiar with the foundations of The Way of the Chimp and able to focus on applying it more rapidly and effectively to specific work/life challenges and stressors. We will identify individual negative response patterns and learn how to overcome them through mindful awareness. We will gain practical experience of how to apply mindfulness at the critical moment when experiencing physical sensation or intense emotion with special attention to exploring the effect of reactivity in health and illness.

Week Six

Resilience or “stress hardiness” is our ability to return to equilibrium after stressful situations. This week, we will focus on transformational coping strategies to broaden inner resources and enhance resilience through mindful practice. We’ll also learn the fundamentals of interpersonal mindfulness— applying awareness and presence at times when communication becomes difficult or fraught with strong emotions. We’ll gain direct experience of a variety of styles for more effective and creative interpersonal communication.

Week Seven

Mindfulness is most effective when it is a lifetime commitment. This week, we will build on the many ways that we can integrate mindfulness more fully in the workplace and personally into our lives. Whilst having a dedicated regular practice for mindfulness such as Qigong is important and beneficial, it is just as important to bring a broader sense of awareness and presence to every moment in life, and to use non-judgmental mindfulness in self-reflection and decision-making processes. We’ll learn how to maintain the discipline and flexibility of daily practice as circumstances change over the course of life.

Week Eight

In the final week of the programme, we will review everything we’ve learned over the course, with an emphasis on carrying the momentum we’ve built forward into the coming months and years. We’ll learn about resources available to pursue mindfulness in new directions as our life and practice evolve, as well as the support systems that Human Business offer to help continue to integrate, learn, and grow.
