Half a decade. Wow. It seems like yesterday we were in the Arts Centre with 40 or so locals having a pot luck dinner, our first celebration! We’ll have our usual workshops and kapa haka performances, the popular interactive art space, a ‘story corner’ for the little ones, two bonfires on the shore with night and fire poi all around and loads more. There are also a few little surprises littered throughout the afternoon and evenings too so make sure you hang about! We can also confirm the amazing fireworks will be back again with funds donated by the Ministry of Youth Development and, not content with being instrumental in the construction of our community hangi, a little help from Tim and Placemakers. This truly is a community event and we are always humbled by the level of help, support and plain old hard graft we receive from the community to put this on. With that in mind, we would like to extend a massive thank you to (in no particular order); The Ministry of Youth Development, Radio Wanaka & Roy FM, Placemakers, Four Square, The QLDC & Lakes Environmental, The Wanaka Sun, Snowdrifta, ‘Dynamite’ Dave, M.A.C students in the community plus all the phenomenal local young people and adults alike who have been working tirelessly behind the scenes for the last few weeks to help pull this all together. Without all of you doing what you do, and giving what you give, we couldn’t come close to pulling this off. I just worked the first official weekend of the ski season with Cardrona opening on Friday. I have heard it’s well constructed snow considering the less than perfect weather build-up. Overall it was a good weekend for most. It is always pleasing to see so many new faces enjoying a good time in Wanaka but as usual the weekend was spoiled by a few.
My offsider and I dealt with three incidents of assault or fighting reported in town. Those spoken to will no doubt be aware that we do not tolerate anti-social behaviour in Wanaka and nor does our community.
We are looking for witnesses of an assault that happened at the Bullock Bar on Saturday night around 11pm where a 62 year old male was assaulted leaving him receiving stitches and nursing a nasty black eye.
Three males stole the subway sign from Ardmore Street on Saturday night around 9.30pm. We have video footage of the offenders with one wearing a distinctive yellow ski jacket that has black sleeves. If you know who these three males are let us know.
On Saturday night the 16th of June somebody has stolen the honesty box from Patterson Drive in Hawea Flat where they sell eggs. We are looking for information that leads to the offender in this situation please.
The roads are treacherous out there especially the Cardrona Valley Road where the tree lined areas become sheet ice in the mornings and then in the afternoons again. Just because most of the road seems clear doesn’t mean that shaded areas are free of dangerous ice.
If only people would drink responsibly and we could convince others to drive to the conditions we would have the safest town anywhere.
At present our road policing focus is on speed and seat belts. Unless there are exceptional circumstances - if you do not wear a seat belt you can expect to receive an infringement notice.
