ON NOW The Lindis Pass Conservation Group has been working in the Lindis Pass Scenic Reserve since 2004. We are local volunteers who have a partnership agreement with the Department of Conservation to care for the Reserve through exotic weed control, collecting roadside rubbish, and most recently by trialling the re-planting of snow tussock in areas where it has been lost. We hope that these plants will provide an additional seed bank to speed up natural recovery of areas denuded by previous burning, grazing and invasive Hieracium. The results of the Group’s work can be seen. As you drive through the vistas that are so famous in landscape photography, you will see that infestations of brier, broom and lupin amongst the tussocks are now almost absent on the Pass. With the expertise of Otago Polytechnic at Cromwell, Chionochloa rigida snow-tussock seed gathered from the pass has been germinated, grown over three years and replanted on a variety of sites. To trial a different method, Wanaka’s Te Kakano Nursery grew tussocks for us from split-up mature plants. We are delighted to find that the tussocks have grown well. Encouraged by this, ECAN is funding the Group to grow 2,000 tussocks for planting into the Reserve over the next 2-4 years. The work of planting, weeding and rubbish gathering is ongoing. We meet five or six times each summer to spend a convivial day in a stunning and inspiring landscape. The group extends a warm welcome to new volunteers. 3 Day turn around as standard

business cards

The Upper Clutha Branch of NZ Deerstalkers Association would like to locate trophy game heads that have been shot locally in the Wanaka/Hawea area, and by making an inventory of them,

ensuring they don’t disappear forever.

We are particularly interested in any red deer, fallow deer, tahr and chamois trophies that have been shot locally from the present day back

to the “golden days” of stalking.

The heads would be photographed, measured and details of their history, ownership and location recorded.

The information will be provided to the National Association for listing in its archives and record books and would ensure that these trophies are not lost to history.

We are also looking to source a number of outstanding trophies that we could borrow for display at the 2015 NZDA national conference

due to be held in Wanaka in June this year.

If anyone can assist with information or details please contact Murray Burns, ph 443 5506.

WANAKA

Despite being an extremely busy weekend in Wanaka with the Challenge and other organised events, the police are delighted to report that there were few incidents requiring our attention.

This week we did receive a lot of driving complaints, most relating to failure to keep left or passing without 100 metres clear visibility throughout the passing movement. If you do witness driving that you are alarmed by, please ring us at the time and if possible take a photo or video the driving. This just makes it so much easier for us to apprehend the driver and prevent any further bad driving.

We attended two crashes on the Wanaka - Mount Aspiring Road during the week. One where a vehicle drove into the back of another that had stopped. The other where a pedestrian, walking on the side of the road, was hit by the wing mirror of a passing van. Luckily she only sustained minor injury. The driver of the van was charged with Careless Driving. This is a narrow road and motorists need to drive accordingly.

Crime-wise we came through the week well. There was the theft of petrol from a service station. We are following up with the registered owner. There was an assault in one of the CBD bars at about 2.00am on Saturday morning involving two groups. There are positive leads here and we are asking any one that can assist us to identify the parties involved to give us a call. A tractor out West Wanaka way had water poured into its diesel system causing extensive damage.

There was a beacon activated by a solo female tramper who was crossing Rabbit Pass. She had been blown over by high winds and was unable to continue. She was uplifted and taken to Cameron Flat.

Apart from that all good really. This week we intend to focus on speed past school buses and drink driving. Do not be surprised to be stopped and asked to undergo a breath test.

Have a good week.

If you have any information pertaining to the incidents above

or to give information anonymously, call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
