Liturgy Lessons Part 18

“I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ”
Just as Peter professed in Matthew 16:16, we profess Jesus
as “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” In He-
brew, Jesus means “God saves.” “The name “Jesus” signi-
fies that the very name of God is present in the person of
his Son, made man for the universal and definitive
redemption from sins.” (CCC 432) The word “Christ”
come from the Greek translation of the Hebrew Messiah,
which means “anointed.” It became the name proper to
Jesus only because he accomplished perfectly the divine
mission that “Christ” signifies. (CCC436)
Prayer to
St. Michael the Archangel
St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in
battle.Be our defense against the wicked-
ness and snares of the Devil.May God
rebuke him, we humbly pray, and do
thou,O Prince of the heavenly hosts,by
the power of God, thrust into hell Sa-
tan,and all the evil spirits, who prowl
about the worldseeking the ruin of souls.
Amen.

“Demands involving the distribution of wealth, concern for the poor
and human rights cannot be suppressed under the guise of creating a
consensus on paper or a transient peace for a contented minority.
The dignity of the human person and the common good rank higher
than the comfort of those who refuse to renounce their privileges.
When these values are threatened, a prophetic voice must be raised.”

Ordination to the Holy Priesthood of
Jesus Christ on Saturday, June 19th at
11:00 at the Cathedral of the

son, it would be my and my family’s
honor for you to participate via

livestream. As you likely know, I have
had the blessed privilege of serving here
throughout the pandemic and, indeed,
preached my First Mass here as a Dea-
con! It has been a joy serving all of you!
As such, I hope that you are able to join
me and the other four men being or-
dained in this joyful and holy occasion
through prayer and livestream. Please
also pray for me as I offer my First Sol-
emn High Mass of Thanksgiving in the
Extraordinary Form (Traditional Latin)
at Historic St. Mary’s Church on Capi-
tol Hill in Albany on Sunday, June 20th
at 12:30. Though livestream infor-
mation is not currently available for
this, it will be at a later date. Please
consult their website

St. Agnes of Rome was born in 291 AD
and raised in a Christian family. Agnes
was very beautiful and belonged to a
wealthy family. Her hand in marriage
was highly sought after. However,
Agnes made a promise to God never to
stain her purity. Her love for the Lord
was great and she hated sin even more
than death! Whenever a man wished to
marry Agnes, she would always say,
"Jesus Christ is my only Spouse." Ag-
nes was sentenced to death because she
refused a marriage invitation. At first,
Agnes was tied to a stake, but either the
wood would not burn or the flames
parted away from her. This prompted
an officer to draw his sword and behead
the girl. She died a virginmartyr at the
age of 12 or 13 on 21 January 304. St.
Agnes is widely known as the patron
saint of young girls. She is also the
patron saint of chastity, rape survivors
and the Children of Mary. She is often
represented with a lamb, the symbol of
her virgin innocence, and a palm
branch, like other martyrs. She is shown
as a young girl in robes holding a palm
branch with the lamb either at her feet
or in her arms. Her feast day is celebrat-
ed on January 21.
Stained Glass Windows of St. Mary’s
Focus on the windows of St. Mary’s which have been cleaned and beautifully restored.
The Prayer Shawl Ministry members have been busy knitting
and crocheting prayer shawls, lap robes, and baby blankets.
We have a large selection and encourage you to request one for
family and friends in need of spiritual strength and for those
grieving, sick, or suffering. Prayer shawls and baby blankets
make wonderful gifts to celebrate
births and joyous occasions. There
is no charge, but donations are
accepted for the purchase of yarn.

circumstances. See rcda.org for more details
St. Agnes
Saint John the Divine as the son of Zebedee, and
his mother's name wasSalome. They lived on the
shores of the sea of Galilee. The older brother of
Saint John was Saint James. John and James John
followed John the Baptist when he preached re-
pentance in the wilderness and then came to know
and follow theLord. John apparently followed his
new Master to Galilee, and was with him at the
marriage feast of Cana, journeyed with him to
Capernaum, and thenceforth never left him, save
when sent on the missionary expedition with an-
other, invested with the power of healing. He,
James, and Peter, came within the innermost circle
of their Lord's friends, and these three were suf-
fered to remain withChristwhen all the rest of the
apostles were kept at a distance. Peter, James,
andJohnwere withChrist in the Garden of Geth-
semane. John [the "disciple whom Jesus loved"]
and Peter were the first to receive the news from
the Magdalene of the Resurrection. John probably
remained at Jerusalem until the assumption of the
Virgin. The date of his death cannot be fixed with
anything like precision, but it is certain that he
lived to a very advanced age. He is represented
holding a chalice from which issues a dragon, as he
is supposed to have been given poison, which was,
however, innocuous. Also his symbol is an eagle.
St. John the Evangelist
St. Elizabeth
Text edited from The Lives of the Saints by the Rev. S. BaringGould, M.A., published in 1914 in Edinburgh.
St. Elizabeth, a daughter of the line of Aaron, and
the wife of Zechariah, was "righteous before God"
and was "blameless" but childless. Elizabeth is also
a cousin to the Virgin Mary. Zechariah, desiring a
child, went to pray in the temple and was told by
the angel Gabriel, "Do not be afraid, Zechariah;
your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth
will bear you a son, and you are to call him
John.” (Luke 1:13) Zechariah was skeptical be-
cause both himself and his wife were elderly. For
his skepticism, Zechariah was rendered mute until
the prophecy had been fulfilled. Elizabeth became
pregnant shortly thereafter and she rejoiced. Mary
went and visited Elizabeth, and her baby leapt in
her womb. Filled with the Holy Spirit, Elizabeth
proclaimed to Mary, Blessed are you among wom-
en, and blessed is the child you will bear! But why
am I so favored, that the mother of my Lord should
come to me? As soon as the sound of your greeting
reached my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for
joy. Blessed is she who has believed that the Lord
would fulfill his promises to her!" (Luke 1:4145).
Elizabeth gave birth to a son and named him John.
This child was chosen by God to be John the Bap-
tist. John would baptize Christ as an example to all,
that all must be reborn of water and spirit. St. Eliz-
abeth's feast day is celebrated on November 5.

Field Day Fun!

Dear Lord,
You have blessed us with many gifts and talents.
We thank you especially for the ability to participate in field day.
Help us to play in a Christlike manner.
Help us to play in a way that fosters good will and teamwork.
Help us to play to the best of our abilities.
Win or lose, we play to have fun and celebrate life!
Amen!
Like so many recent events, our Field Day
looked a little different this year. Mrs. Merritt,
P.E. teacher, did a wonderful job of planning
fun activities for our students, which also fol-
lowed our health and safety protocols. Instead
of the whole student body participating at the
same time, we kept to our cohorts and spread
the events over two days. The children partici-
pated many games and activities, such as an
obstacle course, soccer kick, ladder ball, relay
races and more. The children showed great
sportsmanship and teamwork. A great time
was had by all!
