ST PAUL’S CHURCH IN ENGLEWOOD S UNDAY M ESSENGER WELCOME TO ST PAULS CHURCH We are glad you are here, and we invite you to enter fully into worship today, and to receive Communion or a blessing. Feel free to take any information about the parish located at the entrances. Don’t be afraid to tell us more about yourself by filling out one of the cards located in each pew or on information tables. Join us as we strive to make northeast Bergen County a place where God’s grace is freely known and shared by all! THE FIFTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST JUNE 24, 2018 Today’s Gospel reading is a series of brief parables in which Jesus describes the kingdom of God. The primary image is of something that seems small and weak, but which through God grows into the greatest of its kind. Thus, until the appearance of Jesus, God’s plan was unknown and hidden. But now, in Jesus’ ministry, it is revealed as the rule of God over all the universe. The first reading, from Ezekiel, gives a contrasting picture of earlier kingdoms. In the time of Israel’s exile in Babylon, the Babylonian conquest of Egypt is used by the prophet as an image of God’s rule over all the nations: a concept that was new to Jewish theology. God will replace those kingdoms that grow without his aid. So he did with Egypt in the early years of the sixth century B.C. In today’s psalm, the psalmist has occasion to offer thanks to God. His gratitude arises out of long experience of God’s goodness during a long life. Today’s reading from 2 Corinthians discusses the temporary and incomplete nature of our life in this world. Paul confidently celebrates faith in the love of Christ that has motivated and sustained him through years of difficult ministry to the Gentiles. He fervently proclaimed that anyone who believed and followed Christ had become a new creation and could see the whole of life in this world from a spiritual point of view. Our ultimate life is in the kingdom of God. In the meantime, we are to live as though we were already in that kingdom. For a brief time, in the Eucharist, we have a foretaste of God’s kingdom, and we live in the presence of Christ as redeemed people. Not yet consummated, the kingdom is, for a moment, revealed. It is likewise revealed whenever we, in obedience to our Lord, minister in his name to others, especially the poor and the sick and the oppressed. THE FIFTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST JUNE 24, 2018

Today’s Gospel reading is a series of brief parables in which Jesus describes the kingdom of God.

CAN YOU HELP BRING THE POWER OF EASTER RIGHT NOW?A generous donor in the Parish Family has invited all of us to deepen our stewardship and giving from God’s abundance as we journey from Easter. The anonymous donor has offered to match your additional financial gift beyond your pledge or regular giving up to $25,000. So if you can make a gift, the abundance is doubled. Your additional gift (no matter the amount) will mean $75,000 of God’s abundance and the transformation of our attention to further God’s Mission through St Paul’s.
