Olympics

Louie then set his sights on the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin

He qualified to run the 5k but was no match for competitors

• Put everything he had into race and finished just shy of seventh

• As he began to set his sights on 1940 Olympic Games Japan and Germany began to take over nations and WWII began

War

 The Olympic Games were cancelled, and Louie was drafted into the air corps in late 1941 to serve as a bombardier

 Louie flew with pilot Russell Allen Phillips, known as Phil by his fellow airmen

Phil is the pilot of ‘the superman’

Phil

quiet, kind, and steady“He was, in Louie’s words, “a damn swell

pilot,” dealing with adversity with calm, adaptive acceptance.”

Phil and Louie are shuffled around for camp to camp each one almost worst than the last

Louie ends up at Omori POW camp and meets “The Bird”

Then he goes on the become a Christian and starts a camp for trouble kids
