MONTERREY – Cuando menos 52 personas fallecieron en un atentado descrito por el presidente de México como “terrorista”, dentro del Casino Royale en la ciudad de Monterrey.

Se cree que el ataque está ligado a la negativa por parte de los administradores de la casa de apuestas a pagar una cuota a un grupo criminal a cambio de permanecer abiertos.

Este está considerado como el peor atentado contra civiles desde que a mediados de 2006 el presidente Felipe Calderón declarara la guerra a los cárteles del narcotráfico.

El presiente Calderón en su mensaje a la nación se solidarizó con el pueblo de Monterrey y prometió que las investigaciones iban a llegar hasta sus últimas consecuencias.

“No nos confundamos ni nos equivoquemos. No estamos hablando en lo medular de un accidente, sino de un homicidio brutal e incalificable. Estamos hablando de criminales que, de manera artera, con premeditación, alevosía y ventaja llegaron al lugar, amagaron a las personas que ahí se encontraban y prendieron fuego, sin más, a esas instalaciones”, dijo el presidente Calderón, describiendo a quienes lo llevaron a cabo como “homicidas incendiarios verdaderos terroristas”.

El presidente declaró tres días de luto nacional, del 25 al 27 de agosto, en solidaridad con las víctimas y sus familias.

El 29 de agosto autoridades informaron del arresto de cinco personas, quienes aparentemente confesaron su participación en el atentado.

El gobernador de Nuevo León, Rodrigo Medina, dijo que todavía buscan a otras dos personas en conexión con este atentado.

Ataque insospechadoEl ataque sucedió entre las 3:30

y 4 p.m. del jueves 25 de agosto, cuando había aproximadamente 100 personas en el establecimiento, entre empleados y clientes, la mayoría de ellos mujeres. El casino está ubicado en una zona de clase alta de la capital del norteño estado de Nuevo León.

De acuerdo con información proporcionada por testigos, y corroborada por las imágenes de algunas cámaras de video, entre 13 y 16 delincuentes armados llegaron al casino en cuatro vehículos. Ocho de los pistoleros entraron al lugar, cargando contenedores, y el resto se quedó resguardando la entrada al lugar.

Testigos dijeron que cuando los clientes del casino vieron entrar a este grupo de personas con galones de combustible en la mano, se desató el pánico y la gente empezó a correr hacia las salidas de emergencia para escapar del lugar.

Los delincuentes gritaron a los que ahí se encontraban que salieran de ahí, usando un lenguaje vulgar, mientras rociaban las máquinas de apuestas y las alfombras con combustible, al que prendieron fuego, alejándose rápidamente de ahí.

De acuerdo a un video presentado por las autoridades, el atentado duró menos de tres minutos.

Inmediatamente el lugar se llenó de humo y la gente intentó escapar hacia las salidas de emergencia, que de acuerdo a algunos sobrevivientes la mayoría estaban bloqueadas o eran muy pequeñas. Testimonios de algunos que lograron salir dijeron que mucha gente había tropezado y había sido pisoteada por quienes deseaban salir de ahí a como diera lugar.

“Adentro reinaba el caos. No se podía ver. Además el humo asfixiaba. Algunos no alcanzaron la salida y se derrumbaban a pocos metros de la puerta”, dijo uno de los sobrevivientes.

“Muchos clientes quedaron pisoteados cuando se desató la estampida de docenas de personas al tratar de salir por una de las pequeñas puertas de emergencia del inmueble”, dijo una mujer que apenas había llegado al casino a celebrar un cumpleaños cuando sucedió el atentado. “Todos quisimos salir al mismo tiempo, pero muchos empujamos y caímos al suelo”, dijo la mujer entre llanto. “Yo sólo escuchaba las explosiones y corrí para salvarme”.

Rescatistas encontraron a varias de las víctimas en los baños del lugar, donde habían buscado refugio en contra del grupo armado, pero donde fueron alcanzados por el humo tóxico.

De acuerdo a las autoridades de Protección Civil de Monterrey, ninguna de las víctimas resultó herida por arma de fuego. Entre los muertos hay 42 mujeres, una de ellas embarazada.

El incendio consumió el lugar por cuando menos tres horas. Bomberos y elementos de rescate controlaron el incendio y fue cuando se pudo ingresar al edificio. Los rescatistas hicieron uso de maquinaria pesada para derrumbar muros y llegar hasta las víctimas, que fallecieron en su mayoría por intoxicación.

El comandante Ángel Flores, jefe de servicios médicos de la Cruz Verde, dijo que las personas fallecidas tenían sus teléfonos celulares en sus manos, señal de que intentaron buscar ayuda antes de morir.

Incendio por extorsiónDe acuerdo con información

proporcionada por oficiales del gobierno de Nuevo León, el administrador del casino informó a las autoridades que el grupo de Los Zetas había exigido un pago semanal de 130 mil pesos a cambio de dejarlos continuar operando.

Como el casino se negó a pagar esta cantidad, el grupo delictivo llevó a cabo el acto criminal.

El gobernador dijo que la línea de investigación que siguen es la de un ataque como represalia por no pagar.

“En las primeras indagatorias observamos que el ataque era dirigido al casino, no a la población civil”, dijo Medina.

Autoridades también tienen la versión de que los administradores ya pagaban una cuota de operación al Cártel del Golfo, sin embargo, Los Zetas ahora les exigían una cantidad mayor.

El casino recibió el permiso original de operación en 1992 y fue clausurado en mayo de este año debido a irregularidades en su operación, pero ese mismo mes un juez ordenó retirar los sellos de clausura por lo que el casino reanudó sus operaciones.

El dueño del casino es Raúl Rocha Cantú, quien aparentemente se fue de México junto con otros familiares, por lo que existe una orden de presentación internacional en su contra.

De acuerdo con el procurador estatal, los dueños dejaron el país en un vuelo privado.

En los últimos años la ciudad de Monterrey ha sido escenario de la pugna entre los cárteles del Golfo y Los Zetas por el control de esta zona, la tercera en importancia a nivel nacional y se de de importantes empresas trasnacionales.

Los detenidosEl 29 de agosto autoridades

informaron del arresto de cinco personas involucradas en el atentado y fueron presentados ante los medios de comunicación el 30 de agosto.

La detención se logró debido a las huellas dactilares encontradas en uno de los vehículos abandonados por los criminales y a una denuncia

Espinoza, de 25 años, originario de Chihuahua pero con residencia en Monterrey. El segundo es Javier Alonso Martínez Morales “El Javo”, de 37 años de edad y originario de Monterrey. El tercero es Jonathan Jahir Reyna Gutiérrez de 18 años, de Monterrey; el cuarto es Juan Ángel Leal Flores “El Casillas o El Cash”, de 20 años, de Monterrey” y Julio Tadeo Berrones Ramírez “El Julio Rayas” de 28 años, de Monterrey.

“Están confesos y tenemos pruebas científicas de que esas personas participaron”, dijo Medina. “Algunos son autores intelectuales, materiales, otros como conductores de los vehículos, estamos investigando a otras personas”, dijo el gobernador. En total se habla de doce participantes en el atentado.

Los cinco estarán bajo arresto por 30 días mientras se realizan las investigaciones. Ellos están acusados de homicidio. Además, autoridades han podido determinar que estos criminales también se dedicaban al narcomenudeo, secuestro, homicidio, robo de auto y cobro de piso.

Uno de los detenidos, Berrones Ramírez, se encontraba en libertad condicional después de haber sido detenido en 2010 por el robo de un auto con violencia.

El gobernador Medina dijo que entre los prófugos se encuentra en autor intelectual del multihomicidio, a quien no identificó por nombre pero dijo que es el jefe de plaza de Los Zetas en Monterrey.

De acuerdo a las autoridades, después de ser interrogados, los cinco acusados dijeron que no pretendían matar a nadie y que solamente querían darle un susto a los dueños del casino para que pagaran lo que se les pedía. También dijeron que habían sido “regañados” por sus jefes debido al resultado de

sus acciones.Entre los siete participantes que

se encuentran prófugos se habla de dos mujeres, identificadas por los detenidos con los apodos de La Kely y La Beba.

Los arrestados dijeron que el día del atentado La Kely manejaba un Mini Cooper blanco con rayas negras, mientras que La Beba estuvo al volante de una camioneta pick-up C10, ambos vehículos confiscados por las autoridades.

En sus declaraciones los detenidos dijeron que todos ellos, incluyendo los prófugos, habían recibido la orden de reunirse a las 2:40 de la tarde en el restaurante el Gran Pastor, ubicado cerca del Casino Royale. De ahí salieron a cargar el combustible y se dirigieron a su destino.

Dijeron que el líder del grupo, cuyo nombre no ha sido dado a conocer, se presentó en el lugar de los hechos, aunque guardó su distancia, para observar que se llevaran a cabo las instrucciones que se habían dado.

Recompensa por ataque terrorista

A raíz de este atentado, el gobierno federal ha ofrecido una recompensa de 30 millones de pesos (alrededor de $2.4 millones de dólares) a quien de información que lleve al arresto de los criminales. Esta recompensa es similar a la ofrecida por los grandes capos de las drogas.

En un mensaje a la nación en el que anunció la “substancial recompensa económica a quien aporte información, que de manera cierta, nos lleve pronto a la captura de estos asesinos”, el presidente Calderón también habló de no dejar sola a la ciudad de Monterrey y al estado de Nuevo León en esta hora de dolor, anunciando un aumento en

las Fuerzas Federales en Monterrey y en el noreste del país.

“No descansaremos hasta dar con los culpables y restituir a los nuevoleoneses la tranquilidad que en los últimos años se ha perdido”, dijo el presidente.

Estados Unidos, culpable parcial del atentado

“Es evidente que no nos estamos enfrentando a delincuentes comunes. Estamos enfrentando a verdaderos terroristas que han rebasado todos los límites, no sólo de la ley, sino del elemental sentido común y del respeto a la vida”, dijo Calderón en su discurso, en el cual también recalcó la participación de bandas criminales que ven en la venta de drogas a Estados Unidos su mayor fuente de ingresos.

Dijo que las ganancias económicas llevan a los criminales a una lucha sanguinaria entre pandillas para tener control de estas fuentes ilícitas de ingresos, causando así actos brutales e inhumanos.

“De estas ganancias económicas, las mayores rentas provienen de un factor: el trasiego y venta de droga a los Estados Unidos. Parte de la tragedia que vivimos los mexicanos tiene que ver con el hecho de que estamos al lado del mayor consumidor de drogas del mundo y, a la vez, del mayor vendedor de armas en el mundo que paga miles y miles de millones de dólares cada año a los criminales por proveerlos de estupefacientes”, dijo Calderón.

El presidente recalcó que México ya no puede seguir siendo la puerta de acceso por la que pasan todas las drogas a Estados Unidos, ni tampoco puede seguir pagando las consecuencias de este tráfico de drogas y armas.

“Ese consumo de drogas debe reducirse drásticamente, y si eso no es posible, los Estados Unidos deben colaborar también, cuando menos, para evitar que su trasiego, el de los dólares a México, genere esta violencia insufrible que no queremos los mexicanos”, aseveró el mandatario, haciendo un llamado al Congreso y al gobierno estadounidense a encontrar una solución para quitarles la ganancias ilícitas a los criminales.

También pidió al gobierno estadounidense que frene el flujo de armas a México, que son usadas en crímenes en todo el país.

“No hay razón para que los cientos de miles de armas vendidas a los criminales apunten a los mexicanos y a sus autoridades. Somos vecinos, somos aliados, somos amigos, pero también ustedes son responsables”.

Por su parte, el presidente de los

Estados Unidos, Barack Obama, condenó el ataque en México.

“Condeno firmemente este acto barbárico y reprobable en Monterrey, México, el día de ayer. A nombre del pueblo estadounidense nuestros pensamientos y plegarias están con las víctimas y sus familias en este momento difícil”, dijo el mandatario en un breve comunicado.

“La gente de México y su gobierno están envueltos en una valiente lucha para desbaratar a las violentas organizaciones criminales trasnacionales que amenazan tanto a México como a los Estados Unidos. Los Estados Unidos son y continuará siendo un socio en esta lucha. Compartimos con México la responsabilidad para cumplir con este reto y estamos comprometidos a continuar nuestra cooperación sin precedentes para enfrentar a estas organizaciones criminales.”

Llegan refuerzosMientras tanto, ya se encuentran

en Monterrey mil 800 elementos de la Policía Federal y la Secretaría de Marina que van a patrullar las calles de la ciudad.

Los oficiales fueron recibidos entre vivas, aplausos y bendiciones.

“Ojalá que con la llegada de la policía podamos vivir sintiéndonos libres”, dijo Juan, un regiomontano que orilló su vehículo para darle el paso a la caravana militar.

La llegada de las fuerzas armadas coincidió con la organización de una marcha contra la violencia, a la

que asistieron alrededor de dos mil personas, el 28 de agosto.

La marcha originalmente se planeó como un evento no político y en el que se exigirían acciones concretas contra la violencia.

Sin embargo, casi al final de los discursos, un hombre arrebató el micrófono y comenzó a exigir la salida del gobernador del estado.

Los organizadores se mostraron tristes por la poca asistencia de la gente a esta manifestación, pensada para mostrar la frustración de la gente ante la falta de acciones concretas contra la violencia que azota la región.

¿Participación policial?Los medios sociales han sido

cruciales en revelar detalles sobre el ataque al casino en Monterrey.

Dos videos colocados en YouTube abren la posibilidad de que los atacantes hayan recibido la colaboración de algunos elementos de la policía municipal de Monterrey para el ataque, o por lo menos prefirieron no intervenir.

Los videos, tomados por dos diferentes personas, muestran los momentos en que empezaba el incendio y se aprecian dos patrullas de la policía municipal estacionadas afuera del Casino Red, ubicado a unos metros del Casino Royale. Los videos también muestran a una patrulla de Tránsito Municipal pasando por el lugar sin detenerse.

Uno de los videos tenía la siguiente descripción, escrita por la

persona que lo grabó en su teléfono celular:

“Yo estaba enfrente cargando gasolina, sí hubo balazos, había un retén a un lado frente al Casino Red por el cual yo pasé cuando iba a un negocio y estaba lleno de policías estatales. Cuando venía de regreso me paré en una gasolinera que está enfrente del Casino Red, vi cuando pasaron unos sujetos con armas largas frente a mí gritando: ‘somos los zetas’ o algo así, y haciendo disparos al aire, pasaron por el retén, pero los policías ya no estaban, se escondieron en el estacionamiento del Casino Red. Les mando video que tomé con mi nextel y donde al inicio del mismo se oye todavía un balazo y se aprecia una de las dos patrullas que estaban en el retén”.

Descubren fosa ligada a homicidas de Casino Royale

Autoridades informaron que en base a las declaraciones de los cinco miembros de Los Zetas detenidos por el mortal incendio provocado en el Casino Royale, descubrieron los restos de seis hombres en una fosa en un cerro de Monterrey.

En un terreno en el cerro de Las Mitras se localizaron restos humanos y envases de plástico que contenían combustibles, indicios de que los cuerpos eran destruidos.

Inicialmente se dijo que los restos podrían pertenecer a seis hombres, pero será hasta que los peritos terminen sus análisis para determinar el número de víctimas.

MONTERREY – At least 52 people died in an incident described by Mexico president as a “terrorist attack” inside the Casino Royale in Monterrey.

It is believed that the attack is linked to the refusal by Casino administrators to pay a fee to a criminal group in order to be able to continue in business.

This is considered the worst attack against civilians in Mexico since mid-2006, when President Felipe Calderon declared war on drug cartels.

In his message to the nation, President Calderon showed his support to the people of Monterrey and promised to investigate this case and find the perpetrators.

“Let’s not make a mistake. We are not talking at the core about an accident, but of a brutal and indescribable crime. We are talking about criminals who, with knowledge and planning, arrived at the site, threatened those who were there and set the place on fire,” Calderon said, describing the perpetrators as ““homicidal arsonists, true terrorists.”

The president declared three days of national mourning in honor of the victims, from Aug. 25 to Aug. 27.

On Aug. 29, authorities said they had captured five people, who allegedly participated in the attack.

Nuevo Leon Governor Rodrigo Medina said they are still looking for two other men in connection with this attack.

Unexpected attackThe attack happened between 3:30 and

4 p.m. on Aug. 25, when about 100 people were in the casino, including patrons and employees, most of them women. The casino is located in one of the best neighborhoods of Monterrey, capital of the northern state of Nuevo Leon.

According to information provided by witnesses, which coincides with images from some surveillance cameras, between 13 and 16 criminals with guns arrived at the casino in four vehicles. Eight of the gunmen entered the casino carrying plastic containers and the rest stayed outside mounting guard.

Witnesses said that when casino patrons saw the group entering the casino, they got scared and tried to escape, running to the emergency exits.

The criminals then yelled at the patrons to get out of there, insulting them, while they were covering the machines and carpeting with combustible they were carrying in plastic containers. Then they sped away.

According to a video presented by authorities, the attack lasted less than three minutes.

The place immediately filled up with smoke and people tried to run to the emergency exits, but according to some survivors, some were blocked or were too small. Accounts of those who escaped said many people fell to the ground and had been trampled by those who wanted to escape.

“It was chaotic inside. You couldn’t see. Also, the smoke was choking us. Some couldn’t reach the door and fell a few meters from the door,” one of the survivors said.

“Many clients were trampled when dozens of people were trying to exit through one of the small emergency exits,” a woman who had just arrived at the casino to celebrate a birthday said. “All wanted to leave at the same time, but many of us were pushing and some

fell to the ground,” the woman said, crying. “I only heard the explosions and ran to save my life.”

Rescue workers found several victims inside the restrooms, where they had sought refuge from the armed group, but where they died because of the toxic smoke.

According to Civil Protection authorities, none of the victims had been injured by gunfire. Among the dead are 42 women, one of them pregnant.

The fire consumed the building for at least three hours. Once firefighters and rescue workers controlled the fire, authorities entered the building. Rescue workers used heavy machinery to demolish some walls and reach the victims, most of whom died of smoke inhalation.

Commander Angel Flores, chief of medical services for the Green Cross said those who died were clutching their cell phones in their hands, in a futile effort to get help.

Fire caused by extortionAccording to information provided by

Nuevo Leon government officials, a casino administrator told authorities that Los Zetas had demanded a weekly pay of $130,000 pesos in order to let them operate the casino.

Because they didn’t pay the money, the criminal organization attacked the casino.

Governor Medina said they are following this lead in the investigation.

“In the first investigations we could see the attack was directed at the casino, not at the people there,” Medina said.

Authorities are also investigating another version, in which casino administrators were already paying another criminal organization, the Gulf Cartel, to operate, but Los Zetas were asking for a higher amount.

The casino received the original permit of operations in 1992 and in May of this year it was closed by authorities because of some irregularities. However, that same month a judge ordered the closure to be overturned and the casino opened its doors gain.

Meanwhile, the owner of the Casino is nowhere to be found and authorities have issued an international order of arrest against him.

Raul Rocha Cantu is the owner of the casino and according to the Nuevo Leon Attorney General, he and some of his relatives left Mexico in a private plane.

In the last few years Monterrey has seen a war between the Gulf Cartel and Los Zetas for control of the area, the third in importance in the country and home to important transnational companies.

The arrestedOn Aug. 29 authorities informed of the

arrest of five men in connection with the attack. The following day they were presented to the media.

The arrests were possible through the identification of a fingerprint from one of the vehicles used by the criminals and an anonymous tip.

They are Luis Carlos Carrazco Espinoza, 25, from Chihuahua but living in Monterrey; Javier Alonso Martinez Morales “El Javo”, 37; Jonathan Jahir Reyna Gutierrez, 18; Juan Angel Leal Flores “El Casillas” or “El Cash”, 20; and Julio Tadeo Berrones Ramirez “El Julio Rayas”, 28, all of them from Monterrey.

“They confessed and we have scientific proof they are the people who participated,” Medina said. “Some are intellectual authors, others are material authors, others were driving the vehicles, we are investigating other people,” the governor said. Authorities said there were twelve people involved in the attack.

The five men will be under police custody for 30 days while investigations continue. They are charged with homicide. Also, authorities have determined all of them had been involved in drug sales, kidnapping, homicide, carjacking and extortion to businesses.

During the press conference where the arrests were announced, authorities also presented a video that shows the suspect filling up containers with gas for the attack.

Gov. Medina said that among those at-large is the mastermind of the attack, who was not identified by name but was described as the head of Los Zetas in Monterrey.

According to authorities the five men under police custody said during interrogations that their only goal was to scare the casino owners to pay the money to the crime organization, not to kill anybody. They allegedly said their bosses scolded them for the results of their actions.

Among the seven attackers still at-large are two women, identified by those arrested by their nicknames, “La Kely” and “La Beba”.

The men said that the day of the attack La Kely was driving a white Mini Cooper while La Beba was behind the wheel of a C10 pick-up truck. Both vehicles are among those recovered by authorities.

In their statements the men arrested said all of them, including the ones still at-large, had received an order to gather at El Gran Pastor, a restaurant near the casino, at 2:40 p.m. From there they went to get gas and then to their destination.

They said the group leader, whose name was not revealed, was near the scene of the attack, making sure the orders were followed.

Reward offered in terrorist attackAfter the attack the federal government

offered a reward of about $2.4 million to

people who provide information that leads to the arrest of the perpetrators. This reward is similar to that offered for drug lords.

In a message to the nation in which he announced “A substantial financial reward to those who provide true information that will lead us soon to the arrest of these murderers,” President Calderon also said he wouldn’t leave Monterrey to fend for itself and announced an increase in the number of federal forces assigned to Monterrey and the country’s northeast.

“We won’t rest until we find the perpetrators and restore the peace that people from Nuevo Leon has lost in the last few years,” the president said.

United States shares the blame for the attack

“It’s evident that we are not facing common criminals. We are facing true terrorists that have surpassed the limits, not only of the law, but of common sense and respect for life,” President Calderon said in his speech, which also talked about criminal organizations that see their largest source of revenue in the traffic of drugs to the United States.

Calderon said the huge profits from this illicit trade foster a bloody fight between groups to gain control of the trafficking, resulting in brutal and inhumane attacks.

“Of these financial profits, the largest come from one factor: the transportation and sale of drugs to the United States. Some of this tragedy we Mexicans are living comes from the fact that we are next door to the largest consumer of drugs in the world, and at the same time, the largest seller of guns in the world that pays thousands and thousands of millions of dollars each year to provide criminals with drugs,” Calderon said.

The president stressed that Mexico can no longer afford to be the back door to transport drugs to the United States and cannot keep paying the consequences of the gun and drug trafficking.

“The use of drugs must be drastically reduced, and if that’s not possible, the United States must cooperate to at least prevent the violence that we Mexicans don’t want as a result of the contraband of dollars to Mexico,” he said, issuing a call to the U.S. Congress to find a solution to seize the profits from criminal organizations.

He also asked the U.S. government to stop the flow of weapons that are used in crimes throughout Mexico.

“There is no reason for the hundreds of thousands of weapons sold to criminals to be trained in Mexican citizens and its authorities. We are neighbors, we are allies, we are friends, but you area also responsible,” he said.

Meanwhile, President Barack Obama issued a statement condemning the attacks.

“I strongly condemn the barbaric and reprehensible attack in Monterrey, Mexico yesterday. On behalf of the American people, our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families at this difficult time,” the president said in a brief statement.

“The people of Mexico and their government are engaged in a brave fight to disrupt violent transnational criminal organizations that threaten both Mexico and the United States. The United States is and will remain a partner in this fight. We share with Mexico responsibility for meeting this challenge and we are committed to continuing

officers and Marines have arrived in Monterrey to patrol the streets.

Officers were received by residents with cheers, ovations and blessings.

“Hopefully, with the arrival of the police we would live with a feeling of freedom,” said Juan, a Monterrey resident who moved his vehicle to the side of the road to allow the military caravan to go through.

The arrival of armed forces coincided with a peace march organized Aug. 28 to demand a stop

to the violence in the city. About 2,000 people attended the march.

While originally it was planned to be a non-political event to ask the government for peace in their city, a man interrupted the scheduled speeches and demanded the resignation of the governor.

Organizers were discouraged by the lack of participation of Monterrey residents in the march, organized to demand specific actions against violence.

Police involvement?Social media has been crucial in

revealing details about the attack on the casino in Monterrey.

Two videos posted in YouTube open the possibility that the attackers

had the collaboration of municipal Monterrey police officers for the attack, or at least that they preferred not to get involved.

The videos, taken by two different people, show the moments when the fire had just started and there are two municipal police squad cars parked outside Casino Red, located a few meters from Casino Royale.

The videos also show a municipal squad car going by the site of the fire without stopping.

One of the videos had the following description, written by the person who took the video with his cell phone:

“I was across the street refueling my car, yes there were shots fired, there was a checkpoint next door,

across the street from the Casino Red, which was surrounded by state police when I went past there on my way to conducting some businesses. When I returned y stopped at the gas station across the street from Casino Red, I saw when some men went by with long guns, yelling ‘we are zetas’ or something like that, and shooting in the air, they went through the checkpoint but the officers weren’t there, they were hiding inside the Casino Red parking lot. I am posting a video taking with my Nextel and where in the beginning you can hear a gunshot and you can see one of the two squad cars that were at the checkpoint.”

Illegal grave linked to Casino

Royale criminals discoveredAuthorities said that, based on

information provided by the five men arrested in connection with the Casino Royale attack, they located an illegal dump site where human remains were found.

The remains of six people were recovered from a property in the Las Mitras hill near Monterrey.

At the site authorities uncovered the remains of what they believe are six men, as well as containers with combustible, which indicate they dissolved the bodies of their victims.

Authorities won’t know for sure how many people were left in the illegal grave until experts complete their analysis of the remains.

Schools in Acapulco closed for threats until further notice

ACAPULCO, GUERRERO – Alrededor de 400 maestros de 80 escuelas de la ciudad de Acapulco suspendieron clases en sus instituciones, debido a supuestas amenazas de extorsión y secuestros.

La suspensión de clases empezó el 26 de agosto, cuando maestros de 80 escuelas primarias, de jardín de niños y de secundaria no se presentaron a sus labores y cerraron las escuelas en varias colonias de la ciudad exigiendo seguridad.

Los profesores indicaron que habían recibido amenazas de extorsión por medio de

mantas colocadas afuera de las escuelas y de una carta que supuestamente enviaron grupos de la delincuencia organizada.

Todavía el 31 de agosto algunas escuelas tenían cartulinas en el exterior diciendo “Hoy no hay clases hasta nuevo aviso”, “Se suspenden clases por reunión sindical”, pero no explicaban el verdadero motivo de la suspensión.

Una copia de la carta que supuestamente enviaron grupos criminales fue hecha llegar al diario El Universal de México, que reprodujo partes de la misma.

La carta fue escrita en computadora y en ella se le dice a una profesora, de nombre

“Blanca”, que tiene 15 días para entregar la lista con nombres de profesores, dirección y números de teléfono celulares, así como copias de las credenciales de elector y copia de la nómina de la zona escolar 32.

En la carta también aparentemente le piden que forme una lista de los maestros que cobran entre 20 mil y 50 mil pesos al mes.

“Avísales que a partir del 1 de octubre pagarán derechos de piso, 50 % de su salario y aguinaldos, a quien no le parezca tiene la oportunidad de irse, de lo contrario ya saben que no andamos con …,” dice la carta enviada al diario.

En la carta también se le advierte a “Blanca”

que si hay “profesores problemáticos” que los subraye con rojo en la lista y que les avise a los directores que están al tanto de los cobros que les hacen a padres de familia, y por eso van a hacerles una visita especial.

Autoridades educativas y de seguridad de Acapulco dijeron que van a hacer permanente un programa llamado Escuela Segura y que van a reforzar los operativos y retenes en los que participan la Marina y el Ejército. Todo esto con el afán de que los profesores regresen a clases.

Las escuelas en cuestión están ubicadas en su mayoría en zonas conflictivas y con altos índices de criminalidad.

ACAPULCO, GUERRERO – About 400 teachers in 80 schools in the city of Acapulco have suspended all activities because of alleged threats and extortion.

Schools cancelled classes beginning Aug. 26, when teachers from 80 kindergarten, elementary and junior high schools didn’t go to their classrooms and demanded security.

Teachers said they had been threatened with huge signs placed outside the schools and through a letter, apparently sent by crime organization groups.

On Aug. 31 some schools had signs at the door saying “No classes until further notice”or“Classes have been suspended for union meetings,” but didn’t explain the real reason behind the closing of the schools.

A copy of a letter allegedly sent by the crime groups was delivered to El Universal newspaper, which reproduced some excerpts.

The letter was typed in a computer and it is addressed to a teacher named “Blanca”. In the letter she is told that she has 15 days to compile and deliver a list that includes the names of all teachers, their addresses and cell phone numbers, as well as copies of their voter’s card and a

copy of payroll for the 32nd school zone.

The letter also allegedly asks the teacher to compile a list of the teachers who receive between 20,000 and 50,000 pesos per month.

“Tell them that beginning Oct. 1 they will have to pay rights, 50 % of their salary and bonuses, those who don’t like it have the opportunity to leave, if not, they know we are not (playing games)…” the letter sent to the newspaper reads.

The document also warns “Blanca” that if there are any “troublemaker teachers”, to identify them by underlining their names on the list in red and to tell the school

principals that they know about the fees they charge parents of children who attend the schools, and that they will make a special visit to the schools to deal with that issue.

Education and safety authorities in Acapulco said they are going to leave in place a program called “Safe School” and that they are reinforcing

checkpoints and operations throughout the city with the help of the Marines and the Army. All this in an effort to bring the teachers back to the classrooms.

The affected schools are located in zones with high criminal activity and are considered conflict zones by authorities.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The acting director of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), Kenneth Melson, was relieved from his post as a consequence of the failed “Fast and Furious” operation.

Melson was substituted in the job by Todd Jones on Aug. 31. Jones was a federal prosecutor in Minnesota. Now Melson will be senior advisor on forensic science in the Office of Legal Policy at the Justice Department.

The Justice Department also informed the resignation of U.S. Attorney for the District of Arizona Dennis Burke.

Both Melson and Burke were key officers in the oversight of the operation carried out by ATF to track gun buyers and make cases against large Mexican drug cartels.

The operation, which started in the fall of 2009 and ended in late 2010, after a Customs and Border Patrol officer was killed, has been shrouded in controversy and has been subject to a Congressional investigation.

During the operation, ATF facilitated the sale of at least 2,000 guns, knowing those weapons would end up in Mexico. Of the 2,000 guns sold only 600 have been reported as recovered.

The change in personnel at the agency is not going to stop the investigation currently under way about this operation.

The chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, Darrell Issa, issued a statement saying that “While the reckless disregard for safety that took place in Operation fast and Furious certainly merits changes within the Department of Justice, the Oversight and Government Reform Committee will continue its investigation to ensure that blame isn’t offloaded on just a few individuals for a matter that involved much higher levels of the Justice Department.”

The committee chairman said there are still many questions without answers about what happened in the operation and about who is responsible for it, but that the changes at the

agency are giving the Department of Justice an opportunity to explain the role played by other

officers and agencies in the plan that allowed weapons to flow to the drug cartels.

Head of agency in charge of ‘Fast and Furious’ operation loses his job

WASHINGTON, D.C. – El director interino de la Agencia para el Control de Alcohol, Tabaco y Armas de Fuego (ATF), Kenneth Melson, fue separado de su cargo a consecuencia del fallido operativo “Rápido y Furioso”.

Melson fue sustituido por Todd Jones el 31 de agosto. Jones es un fiscal federal de Minnesota. Ahora Melson será consejero en ciencia forense de la Oficina de Política Legal del Departamento de Justicia.

El Departamento de Justicia también anunció la renuncia de Dennis Burke, el fiscal federal por el Distrito de Arizona.

Tanto Melson como Burke fueron los oficiales clave para supervisar la operación de la agencia ATF para rastrear a compradores de

armas y armar casos en contra de los grandes cárteles mexicanos de las drogas.

El operativo, que inició en el otoño de 2009 y terminó poco después del asesinato en 2010 de un oficial de la Patrulla Fronteriza, ha estado envuelto en la controversia y ha sido objeto de una investigación por parte del Congreso.

Se dice que durante el operativo ATF facilitó la venta de cuando menos 2 mil armas de fuego, sabiendo que estas armas iban a parar en México. De las 2 mil armas solo 600 han sido reportadas como recuperadas.

El cambio de personal en la agencia no detendrá la investigación del gobierno sobre este operativo.

El director del Comité de Supervisión y Reforma Gubernamental de la Cámara de Representantes, Darrell Issa, dijo en un

comunicado que “mientras que el temerario desprecio por la seguridad que se vio en el Operativo Rápido y Furioso amerita cambios dentro del Departamento de Justicia, el Comité de Reforma Gubernamental y Supervisión continuará su investigación para asegurarse que la culpa no es adjudicada a solo unas cuantas personas, por un asunto que involucraba a niveles mucho más altos dentro del Departamento de Justicia”.

El director del comité dijo que todavía quedan muchas preguntas sin respuesta sobre lo que pasó en el operativo y sobre quién más es responsable, pero que estos cambios ofrecen la oportunidad de que el Departamento de Justicia explique qué papel jugaron otros oficiales y agencias en el plan que permitió llevar armas a los cárteles de las drogas.

MEXICO CITY – A school bus transporting nine middle-school students was sprayed with bullets in a suburb of Mexico City.

According to authorities, at about 6:50 a.m. on Aug. 29, the bus didn’t allow a black Jetta to go through while picking up students in the Mexico City suburb of Huixquilucan. The car driver shot the back and left side of the bus.

In total the bus was hit by nine bullets that pierced the back, left side and two left side windows of the bus. The driver, a school bus guard supervisor and nine students escaped without injury.

The bus continued the route while the black Jetta escaped.

At the next scheduled stop the driver told the father of that student what had happened. The man then directed the students to his home and called authorities to report the incident.

School officials were also notified and they sent another school bus to pick up the students.

The driver told authorities that he was driving slowly and the black car was behind the school bus. Then the driver signaled him to allow him to go through and pass the bus. Because the bus couldn’t do it, the driver of the car opened fire against the bus.

Authorities said there were no video cameras in the area where the shooting occurred, but that several homes in the zone have closed

circuit services and that they are in the process of checking the videos to identify the shooter.

After the incident the State Safety Agency deployed 180 municipal officers to protect school buses.

Judge temporarily blocks anti immigrant law in Alabama

WASHINGTON – A federal judge temporarily blocked the enforcement of an anti immigrant law in Alabama.

The law was set to become effective Sept. 1, but federal Judge Sharon Lovelace Blackburn issued a temporary restriction order on Aug. 29.

In her ruling, the judge said there was not enough time before Sept. 1 to deal with all the legal arguments from all the parties involved about the constitutionality of the law.

“It is hereby ordered that Act 2011-535 is temporarily enjoined, and may not be executed or enforced,” Blackburn wrote. She also said this doesn’t mean one of the parties involved is being favored over the others. She ordered the state and law’s opponents to submit more legal briefs and said the injunction will remain in place at least until Sept. 29.

Those opposing the law, including religious leaders, civil rights organizations and the U.S. Department of Justice, had asked the government to block the law from becoming effective.

Meanwhile, Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley said in a written statement that “I look forward to the judge ruling on the merits. We have long needed a though law against illegal immigration in this state, and we now have one. I will continue to fight at every turn to defend this law against any and all challenges.”

The law requires police to determine the legal status of a person they suspect is in the country illegally. Also, it requires the state to check the immigration status of all the students in public schools, makes it a crime to give an undocumented immigrant a ride or rent him a place to live and nullifies contracts signed by undocumented immigrants.

WASHINGTON – Un juez federal bloqueó de forma temporal la entrada en vigor de una ley antiinmigrante en el estado de Alabama.

La ley estaba programada a entrar en efecto el 1 de septiembre, y la juez Sharon Lovelace Blackburn dio una orden para detenerla de forma temporal el 29 de agosto.

En su orden, la juez dijo que no había tiempo suficiente antes del 1 de septiembre para abordar todos los argumentos legales de las distintas partes involucradas sobre la constitucionalidad de la ley.

“Por lo tanto se ordena que el CTA 2011-535 está temporalmente prohibida y no puede ser ejecutada o hecha cumplir”, escribió Blackburn, quien aclaró que esto no significa que alguna de las dos partes tenga la razón. Ordenó que tanto el estado de Alabama como los opositores a la ley sometan más argumentos en el caso y dijo que la orden de restricción estará vigente hasta cuando menos el 29 de septiembre.

Los opositores de la ley, incluyendo líderes religiosos, organizaciones de derechos civiles y el Departamento de Justicia de los Estados Unidos, habían solicitado que no se permitiera la entrada en vigor de esta ley.

Por su parte el gobernador de Alabama, Robert Bentley, dijo en un comunicado que “anticipo que la juez decida en base a méritos. Por mucho tiempo hemos necesitado una ley estricta en contra de la inmigración ilegal en este estado, y ahora tenemos una. Continuaré luchando paso a paso para defender esta ley en contra de todos los retos”.

La ley requiere que la policía intente determinar el estatus migratorio de una persona de la que se tenga la sospecha que es un inmigrante indocumentado. Además, incluye un requisito para que el estado revise el estatus migratorio de los estudiantes en escuelas públicas, convierte en criminal a quien lleve a un inmigrante indocumentado o les rente vivienda, además de que anula los contratos firmados por un indocumentado.

Atacan autobús escolar en Huixquilucan

CD. DE MÉXICO – Un autobús escolar que transportaba a nueve estudiantes de secundaria fue baleado en un suburbio de la ciudad de México.

De acuerdo a las autoridades, el incidente se registró alrededor de las 6:50 a.m. del 29 de agosto, cuando un autobús escolar no dejó pasar a un vehículo Jetta negro que intentaba rebasarlo mientras recogía a estudiantes en el suburbio de Huixquilucan. El chofer del automóvil disparó contra la parte trasera y el lado izquierdo del autobús escolar.

En total nueve balas alcanzaron el autobús escolar. Tanto los estudiantes como el chofer y el supervisor del autobús resultaron ilesos.

Después de los disparos el autobús continuó con su ruta mientras el auto negro escapaba.

En la siguiente parada el chofer comentó con un padre de familia lo que acababa de suceder, por lo que el hombre hizo que los estudiantes se refugiaran en su casa y llamó a las autoridades para reportar el incidente.

Oficiales de la escuela también fueron notificados y enviaron a otro autobús para recoger a los alumnos.

El chofer dijo a las autoridades que estaba circulando a baja velocidad y que el auto negro transitaba atrás del autobús. Cuando el chofer del auto le hizo señales al autobús para que lo dejara pasar y el autobús no pudo hacerlo, el chofer del automóvil abrió fuego contra la unidad de transporte.

Las autoridades dijeron que no existen videocámaras en la zona del incidente, pero que las residencias en esta área cuentan con sistemas de circuito cerrado, por lo que analizarán los videos para dar con el responsable.

Después del incidente la Agencia de Seguridad del Estado asignó a 180 policías municipales a custodiar autobuses escolares.

de un diario mexicano, Thalía ha sido demandada por una empresa de cosméticos en México, debido a que la cantante no promocionó debidamente unos productos de belleza debido a su embarazo.

De acuerdo a la demanda interpuesta en la Ciudad de México, la empresa Genomma Lab International dice que la cantante y actriz no cumplió con un contrato que tenía con ellos para promocionar por dos años la línea de productos Teatrical.

En la demanda la compañía de cosméticos asevera que la cantante, al enterarse de su embarazo, se dedicó a hacer amplia difusión de su estado de buena esperanza y no cumplió con sus compromisos con la empresa.

Genomma Lab International exige la devolución de los pagos que se le hicieron a la cantante por la promoción, además de intereses y el pago de los

gastos de la demanda.La demanda fue interpuesta el 11 de agosto

en la Ciudad de México, pero el proceso puede durar varios meses, ya que ahora se ha solicitado la colaboración de la Secretaría de Relaciones Exteriores para que la artista sea notificada de esta demanda.

Para hacerlo se necesita conseguir que un juez en Estados Unidos contacte a la artista para que ella pueda responder a la demanda.

El diario mexicano dice que la compañía Genomma Lab compró en el año 2009 la marca Teatrical. Como parte de su estrategia de promoción, se unió a Televisa para difundir sus productos.

Es entonces que Thalía es contratada como vocera del producto, recalcando las virtudes del producto para disimular la edad y sentirse como de 17 años. La imagen de una mujer embarazada no concuerda con la imagen a promocionar del producto, dijo la empresa en la demanda.

by a Mexican newspaper, singer Thalia has been sued by a Mexican cosmetics company, saying the singer didn’t fulfill her commitment to promote their products due to her pregnancy.

According to the lawsuit filed in Mexico City, the company Genomma Lab International states that the singer and actress didn’t fulfill the commitment she had with the company to promote Teatrical products for two years.

In the lawsuit the company says that the singer, when she found out she was pregnant, used her time to share her good news instead of fulfilling her obligations with the company.

Genomma Lab International is asking the return of the money paid to the singer for the ad campaign, plus interest, and payment of legal fees.

The suit was filed in Mexico City on Aug. 11, but the process could take months. In order for the process to move forward, authorities have asked

the Mexican Foreign Ministry for help in order to notify the singer of the lawsuit. Because Thalia lives in the United States, a U.S. judge need to issue an order to be given to the artist so she can answer to the allegations.

The newspaper said the company acquired the Teatrical brand in 2009. AS part of its promotional strategy, the company joined forces with TV network Televisa to promote the products.

That’s when Thalia was hired as spokesperson for Teatrical, highlighting the product’s virtues to dissimulate aging and to make women feel like a 17-year-old. According to the company, the image of a pregnant woman doesn’t go with the marketing campaign for the product.
