Renier van Rooyen (87), founder of Pep Stores, passed away three weeks ago on 5 November after a long period if illness. Born in Kenhardt in the Northern Cape in 1931, Van Rooyen had humble beginnings as entrepreneur in Upington in the rural and arid Northern Cape. He started his career as a clerk in the Department of Justice before buying a single store in Upington and with the help of one employee, kick started his Pep empire. He entered the business world at the age of 23 and achieved his success without the benefit of capital of his own. He originally borrowed the equivalent of R1 000 to start his business and had no business experience or financial training. When he retired in 1981 at the age of 50 Pep had become a retail giant with 500 stores, 10 factories and 12,000 employees. His life is a classic "rags-to-riches" story. He combined his personal philosophy for success with a business formula of selling clothing cheaper than anybody else. Van Rooyen had a charismatic and dynamic personality and his tact and enthusiasm was legendary. He also had the ability to reach out to even the lowest-ranked of his employees. “You must select a market, know the product you are selling, and you must believe in what you are doing. You must be single-minded and prepared to work day and night. In other words, you must eat, sleep and drink your business”. With these words Van Rooyen described the recipe from which he created one of the largest retail businesses in South Africa from his very humble beginnings, according to the biography written by his son. The key ingredients of this recipe were "faith, positive thinking, hard work, enthusiasm and compassion", combined which formed the building blocks for Pep Stores' success under Van Rooyen's leadership. Apart from having been one of SA's foremost entrepreneurs, he was a philanthropist. In 2011, for instance he was awarded the Inyathelo Award for Lifetime Philanthropy for his "unwavering compassion and financial generosity throughout his life to poor and vulnerable communities, particularly in the Northern and Western Cape". Renier’s philanthropic contribution extends far beyond building houses for his employees in the Pep family. He has made substantial financial contributions to many community causes, study grants as well as large individual donations. One of his study grants was given to a young Jakes Gerwel who went on to become the Director- General in the Office of former President Nelson Mandela and Chancellor of Rhodes University. Other examples of his philanthropy include the creation a Child and Youth Centre in Kuilsrivier; a tertiary education trust in Upington; a mobile soup kitchen which fed 6,000 children; the distribution of food and clothing parcels to poor families at Christmas; donations to the ‘Argus Teach Fund’ and the Community Chest’s Western Cape fund drive and the establishment of the Renier van Rooyen Trust and the Western Cape Welfare Organisation (Weswok). In the late 1970’s, Weswork transformed into the Foundation for Community Work (FCW) and recently another NGO with a broader focus on community development and civic engagement evolved in the Community Development Foundation Western Cape (CDF WCape ). Both organisations are still active and renowned for their contributions to community development on the Cape Flats. Renier’s financial generosity was matched by his tireless efforts to oppose apartheid legislation. He actively campaigned for the scrapping of apartheid measures such as the Group Areas Act.

Toegang is gratis! Besoekers word wel gevra om vrywillig donasies te maak aan een van die drie liefdadigheidsorganisasies, Engo (speelgoed), DBV (hondekos) of Torings van Hoop (toiletries of
kos).
Kom kuier saam tussen die uitstallers en kosstalletjies in ‘n heerlike kersfees atmosfeer. Die mark is oop op Vrydag en Saterdag vanaf 10:00-18:00 en Sondag van 10:00-13:00.
Besoekers kan Vrydag en Saterdag kom kennismaak met die kleinste miniatuur perdjies! Kleiner kindertjies kan op hulle ry en oor hindernisse spring, terwyl almal hulle kan liefde gee en saam
foto’s neem.
Die gewilde Lollos en Lettie se 10 jaar word gevier met twee vertonings tydens die Bloemskou kersmark. Die vertonings is op Saterdag, 1 Desember 2018 om 11:00 of 15:00. Toegang hiervoor beloop R40 per persoon. Kaartjies beskikbaar by die deure of vooraf by die Bloemskou kantoor.
