Dear UCCS Parents and Families,

Welcome to the University of Colorado Colorado Springs. I am excited you and your student have decided to become a part of the Mountain Lion family. As a part of our family, I hope you will find UCCS to be a place of support, learning, and growth.

At UCCS, our goal is to partner with parents and families to support our students both as scholars and as individuals. We want students involved in and outside of the classroom. As a parent or family member of a UCCS student, you play an important role in supporting your student’s growth. When you are asked for advice about challenging decisions or situations, we will be happy to act as a resource. Please feel free to contact my office at any time.

College is about dreams and the future. We look forward to being a part of helping your student reach his or her dreams and goals. We encourage your student to take advantage of a culture rich in academics, wonderful learning experiences, and opportunities to get involved in our community.

Again, welcome to UCCS. We are proud to call you and your student Mountain Lions.

Cordially,

Pam Shockley-ZalabakChancellor

Stay involved with your studentJust because you drop your student off at colllege does not mean that you need to be hands off. When parents and families are appropriately involved, students are more likely to stay in college.

Encourage your student to explore their interests and passionEncourage your student to take advantage of all of the opportunities UCCS has to offer from top notch academic programs to joining a club or attending an event. Students who are involved tend to do better academically and report being more satisfied with their college experience.

Pay attention to deadlinesHelp your student keep track of important dates and deadlines. Have your student keep a planner or use their phones to remember important dates, such as when assignments and bills are due.

Listen and supportThe first year of college can be challenging as students learn to navigate a new system. Students are bound to make mistakes along the way and sometimes they just need someone to listen and support them through the decision-making process.

Send a care packageEven though you will likely text or talk with your student regularly, a small care package (letter, card, snacks, etc.) can go a long way to show them you care.

FERPAFamily Educational Rights and Privacy ActThe Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) is a federal law created to protect the privacy of student educational records. It applies to schools receiving funds through the U.S. Department of Education. Once a student enters college or turns 18, parental rights under FERPA transfer to the student. Information from student records is not shared unless the student gives written permission, or it is a special case, such as a health or safety emergency. Source: Family Policy Compliance Office of the U.S. Department of Education. Students can waive FERPA rights and give specific individuals (i.e. parents, guardians, spouses, etc.) access to their academic and financial records by filling out a waiver form in their myUCCS portal. For questions about FERPA rights, contact the Admissions and Records Office at 719-255-3361. Items the university cannot discuss without a student’s FERPA waiver on file include, but are not limited to: • Student billing, financial aid, and scholarships • Academic information (grades, transcripts, advising) • Housing issues (roommate issues, room changes, etc.)• Conduct issues

Parent and Family Programs

Welcome to UCCS! As a parent or family member of a UCCS student, you are a part of our Mountain Lion family. The Office of Parent and Family Programs is here to help you become more familiar with the UCCS campus and community and to answer any questions that you may have. We know that parent and family involvement is important to student success and welcome opportunities to partner with you. We hope you and your student will have a rewarding and successful academic year. We want to ensure that you know how to locate the wide variety of resources available to you and your student. Here are just a few of the ways that our office partners with parents: A listening ear…Whether you have a question, a concern, or a story to share, the Office of Parent and Family Programs is here to listen and to help provide support to you and your student. We are happy to serve as your connection to university resources. Never hesitate to call, 719-255-7551, or send an email, [email protected]. A community builder…This year, we are working hard to provide more opportunities for parents and families to visit our campus. You are welcome to attend most UCCS events with your student, but we will be highlighting several events each semester that we feel may be of particular interest to parents and families, including Parent and Family Weekend. A communication hub…Our goal is to help communicate with you about events, updates, and happenings at UCCS. Additionally, we will work to inform you of many of the common transitional issues your student may experience as a new college student. To keep up with what’s going on at UCCS every month, sign up for our monthly e-newsletter by visiting our website: www.uccs.edu/parents.
