PARENT AND FAMILY CALENDAR

Page 2: PARENT AND FAMILY CALENDAR

Dear Parents and Family Members,

It is an honor to welcome you to DePaul University. You have chosen an exciting time to join our community, particularly because we will celebrate DePaul’s 125th anniversary during the 2022-23 academic year, while your student is at DePaul.

As you get to know DePaul, you will learn that our students always come first. Our faculty are talented scholars, who dedicate themselves to teaching. From advisors to career coaches, our staff support our students every step along the path to graduation. DePaul offers an abundance of resources to enhance every student’s academic journey, and I encourage everyone to use them.

Our faculty and staff sincerely care for our students. They strive to give our students the skills they need to be successful when they graduate. That’s why hands-on learning is so important to us. Our faculty, who often still actively work in their fields, bring real-world experience to their work with our students. Chicago is our classroom, and faculty use the city to enhance learning.

From entrepreneurship to cinematic arts to health sciences, the university collaborates with businesses and organizations across Chicago. Our partnerships offer students ample professional development opportunities. Approximately 60% of our students complete internships each year. DePaul’s more than 190,000 living alumni provide a network of connections to help students discover and launch careers. Our alumni are one reason why DePaul graduates are employed at a rate that is well above the national average. In fact, more than 90 percent of our recent graduates are employed or continuing their education within six months of graduation.

Something that resonates with me every single day at DePaul is the profound dedication of the university community to our Catholic, Vincentian mission. The university’s namesake, St. Vincent de Paul, devoted his life to addressing the most pressing societal issues of his time. While our degree offerings have evolved and expanded since the university’s founding in 1898, our dedication to service remains strong. Service learning opportunities exist across the curriculum, and we actively encourage students to participate.

When our students graduate, we hope—above all else—they will carry forward their own commitment to meet the challenges of a dynamic society. If our graduates make a positive difference in the world, DePaul will have succeeded.

Thank you for choosing DePaul, and once again, welcome.

Sincerely,

A. Gabriel Esteban, PhDPresident

FROM THE PRESIDENT

KEEP IN MINDWith a variety of events planned at this time of year, encourage your student to get involved, as national research shows students who are involved in activities outside of class do better academically. The Office of Student Involvement is a good resource for students. DePaul After Dark, a Thursday late-night social program, offers weekly events for students to have fun and meet one another.

Establishing a plan for communication with your student can help to alleviate homesickness. If your student is struggling to adjust to college life, you can refer them to University Counseling Services.

ABOVE: The plaza of the John C. Kluczynski Federal Building features a striking red steel sculpture named “Flamingo,” created by sculptor Alexander Calder. It is one of many architectural sights in the downtown area.

KEEP IN MINDOctober presents the first round of midterms for your student, so words of encouragement or a care package might be a great way to show your support.

Winter quarter registration begins: encourage your student to visit their academic advisor to discuss classes for winter in advance of their registration date.

Roommate conflicts may emerge, as personality differences and living preferences present themselves. The Department of Residential Education can assist students living in the residence halls with navigating these issues.

BELOW: A student studies in a hammock in the Lincoln Park campus Quad on a sunny fall day.

ABOVE: The Fr. John J. Egan statue in front of the Lincoln Park Student Center was installed in 2004, three years after Egan’s death. Egan was a Vincentian priest and soldier for justice who began and ended his career at DePaul. The statue is a powerful reminder of the university’s Vincentian mission and values.

KEEP IN MINDAcademic pressures may emerge as pre-finals stress sets in for your student. Encourage them to reach out to professors and advisors for support and assistance.

Your student is preparing to return home for winter break—this is a good time to discuss expectations of one another during the break.

The FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) has been open for a month, so now is a good time to complete this process. Because many sources of funds are limited, or are subject to deadlines, it is important to file your student’s FAFSA for the coming academic year as early as possible after October 1.

BELOW: The Ray Meyer Fitness and Recreation Center was completed in 1999 and is named in honor of former men’s basketball head coach, Ray Meyer. The Ray includes four floors fea-turing racquetball courts, 25-yard long pool, cardio and weight machines, free weights, free group classes and a 200-meter track.

ABOVE: Midnight Breakfast is a new tradition that began in 2017. Administrators, including President Esteban, faculty and staff serve a late-night breakfast to DePaul students during fall finals. The event is meant as a show of support for students, as well as to make sure they are getting proper nutrition, during finals.

KEEP IN MINDStudents are excited and anxious about the holiday season and winter break. Your student has had a quarter of independence, and their relationships with family and high school friends may have changed.

While your student will be happy to be home and reconnect with you and old friends, they will miss their DePaul friends.

BELOW: Students enjoy a variety of activities at the Ugly Sweater party and President’s Tree Lighting Ceremony in the Lincoln Park Quad. This is a new tradition that started in 2018 and takes place each November.

ABOVE: McGowan South, the four-story science facility opened in 2009, was named after Monsignor Andrew J. McGowan. It is a LEED certified green building and houses the chemistry and environmental science departments. The mural in the background of St. Vincent, designed by photography student Mary Vucekovich-Jeon, is composed of 10,000 individual photographs of students pursuing science studies.

KEEP IN MINDWith one quarter complete, your student may be ready to take on new challenges or may need to improve on the past. This is a good time to encourage reflection on the previous quarter and set goals for the new one. Refer to the “Learning Support” section of the calendar if your student is in need of specific tutoring support in their classes, or visit go. depaul.edu/success to learn about the many ways DePaul supports your student’s success.

As a result of travel and possible holiday expenses over the break, finances may become a consideration for your student this month. Financial Fitness (within DePaul Central) can be a great resource to help students create a plan for their money.

BELOW: The Harold Washington Library-State/Van Buren “L” Brown Line stop opened in 1897 and is located on the south end of Chicago’s downtown loop. This stop serves the DePaul Loop Campus and the Harold Washington Library, which is the central library of Chicago Public Library system.

ABOVE: Each winter as part of Winter Welcome Week, DePaul faculty and staff serve a pasta dinner to hundreds of hungry students. Students also enjoy live music and games. This new tradition, started in 2018, serves to build community and affinity among the DePaul community. In this picture, vice president for Student Affairs, Eugene L. Zdziarski, II, PhD, and Sylvia Morales of Student Financial Accounts prepare to serve up some pasta.

KEEP IN MINDWarmer weather has arrived, and students are eager to get out and explore Chicago. Encourage your student to take advantage of all that Chicago has to offer, but to do it safely, with friends.

Many of your student’s friends may be finishing up their spring semesters while DePaul’s term runs into May—they may be feeling left out as friends return home before them, so remind them to stay focused until the end of the quarter.
