suspect wanted for heinous
crimes relating to gang vio-
lence in Kraaifontein was ar-
rested by Brackenfell police on Fri-
day evening after a scary high-speed
chase on a busy Brackenfell road.
The 36-year-old that appeared on
the Kraaifontein polices wanted list
for murder, attempted murder and
intimidation was finally apprehend-
ed in Sarepta, Kuils River.
The chase ensued shortly after
19:00 on Friday night.
AKraaifontein police sectorman-
ager spotted the unregistered white
Honda Civic on a street corner in
Scottsdene, recognising the driver as
a suspect on thewanted list, says po-
lice spokesperson Warrant Officer
Erica Crous.
Refused to stop
The driver refused to stop, and aft-
er speeding away in the direction of
Bottelary Road, Brackenfell police
were called in for backup.
Brackenfell cops Warrant Officer
TheovanderRiel andConstableRou-
an Scheepers immediately headed
for the busy intersection at Bracken-
fell Boulevard, as did a tactical reac-
tion vehicle from SJC Security.
The fleeing vehicle was intercept-
ed there at 19:33, but the chase contin-
ued.
From there the convoy sped all
the way to Sarepta in Kuils River
with the driver shooting down Bot-
telary Road and the police and secu-
rity vehicles in hot pursuit.
The police held back to ensure they
avoid incidents involving other mo-
torists.
In Sarepta the suspect attempted to
evade his pursuers by soliciting help
from residents believed to be known
to him.
Chase ends in crash
He drove around one street block
twice, waving his arm out the win-
dow and shouting for help to block
the police, says Crous.
The suspects attempts failed and
he in turn was blocked off by the SJC
vehicle on the corner of Lupen and
Iris streets.
He crashed into the SJC vehicle
andwasarrestedbyConstableSchee-
pers moments later, says Crous.
The suspect was not armed and no
shots were fired.
Police found a packet of what is
suspected to be tik in possession of
the suspect, who was detained at the
Kraaifontein police station.
The man appeared in the Blue
Downs magistrates court on Mon-
day, where police opposed bail.
Charges of reckless and negligent
driving and possession of drugswere
added to the existing charges the
manwas sought for in the first place.
The security officer of SJC was
hailed for his role in the arrest and
for putting his life and his vehicle
on the line.

A new informal trading plan for Kraaifon-
teinwill provide an income for countless un-
employed residents, but bureaucratic red
tape is frustrating the process.
The plan that has been in the pipeline for
a year, was presented before Subcouncil 2
last week where it was again amended.
Subcouncil 2 chairman Grant Twigg said
that although the process is taking longer
than anticipated to implement, this revision
is an opportunity to fine tune the plan.
There is a need to demarcate specific lo-
cations for informal trading by considering
the local condition and circumstances,
while at the same time prohibiting informal
trading in certain locations due to practical
on-the-ground consideration. Informal trad-
ing provides an income to those who are un-
employed as well as affording residents an
alternative to established, traditional for-
mal sector retail options, he said.
The final plan will soon be tabled before
theCitysmayoral committee and thereafter
the City council for final approval.
It ismyhope thatwewill be able to imple-
ment the plan by April this year, he said.
Some 180 informal trading bays or kiosks
will be deployed in locations throughout
Kraaifontein, allowing for trade seven days
a week.
The tariff will be R84 per serviced trading
bay per month and R120 per kiosk, generat-
ing a city revenue of about R16 000.
The entire project is costing the city a
pretty penny, butmore importantlywill cre-
ate better economic opportunities for many
of our residents.
An economic profile of Kraaifontein done
with the 2011 Census, shows that 84% of the
labour force (aged 15 to 64) is employed. Also,
39% of all households have a monthly in-
come of R3 200 or less.

ill the choirs sing, or the cyclists cy-
cle? This is the proverbial million
dollar question after WP indoor cy-
clists training at the Bellville Velodrome
got word last Thursday they will have to
make way for a choir association to host its
annual five-week competition
instead.
According to the principal fa-
cilitymanager of the velodrome,
an urgent application was
brought by the Cape Malay
Choir Board to host their annual
event in the indoor cycling are-
na from 13 February until 20
March.
The choristers former event
locationwas theGoodHope Cen-
tre in Cape Town, but the centre
is currently closed to them.
According to Johan Smith,
track director of the WP Track
Cycling Association, their orga-
nisation received a short email
from the principal facility offi-
cer informing them of this new
development, and that they
could only have the facility back
for training theweekend after 20
March.
Events clash over fiveweek period
The principal facility officer had replied
to an initiating email from Abdul Davids,
a member of the facility committee on be-
half of the cyclists and the representative of
theBellville andTygerberg cycling clubs, in
which Davids outlines their training plans.
In his email to the principal facility offi-
cer, Davids spells it out that the cyclists
need to train at the facility the only indoor
cycling track of its kind besides a dilapidat-
ed substitute track in Paarl and how host-
ing the choirs until mid-March would im-
pact on their own training schedule and
planned events.
The conundrum is that the choirs annual
five-week event coincides with the cyclists
own events, and the two are seemingly ir-
reconcilable due to exit infrastructure and
the setting up of emergency stairs across
the tracks to accommodate the choristers,
which will make cycling impossible, ac-
cording to the principal facility officer.
The provincial cyclists are set to compete
in the WP track championship on 11 and 12
March, followed by the nationals in Port
Elizabeth only two weeks later, needing as
much training time as possible, according
to Davids.
Memorial run also at risk
Also, they have an annual memorial run
for JeanneNel, a cyclist who died on the Ve-
lodrome track two years ago, in February
eachyear, with this years event planned for
16 February.
The principal facility officer thenwent on
to offer the cyclists the last weekend of
March to host this memorial event.
Smith says this is a big event also requir-
ing loads of planning. This is a huge and
wildly popular race. Jeannewas a great guy
and one would be able to understand if the
tracks werent available due to develop-
ment, but this is ridiculous; why cant they
accommodate both organisations?
What I find weird is that the pavilion
with its stands is available to the choirs to
practise on; why do they need the inside cy-
cling track? And why do they need to put
steps over the track? Theres more than
enough space for both organisations to
share the facility. Even when
there is more than 1 000 people
at once, there is no need to erect
stairs, he says.
But the choristers are as desti-
tute. Since they received notice
late last year that the City plans
to privatise the Good Hope Cen-
tre, they have very few alterna-
tives to host their own hugely
popular competition.
The Cape Malay Choir Board
had leased theGoodHopeCentre
for its competition since the cen-
tres inception, as that venue
easily accommodates up to 5 000
people and is very central.
The Citys Mayco member for
community services and special
projects, Belinda Walker, says
she is personally looking into
the matter.
I am investigating this mat-
ter personally to ensure that the
arrangements around the use of
the velodrome best accommodate the needs
of both the choirs andcyclists as far aspossi-
ble.
I have asked the sport, recreation and
amenities department to provide informa-
tion on what times the facility is available
for use by the choir and what engagement
with the cycling organisations and clubs
has taken place thus far, she says.
Wherever possible, the City does active-
ly encourage our social facilities to become
increasinglymultifunctional and able to ac-
commodate multiple users.
We want our sporting and recreational
facilities to create maximum social benefit
for communities and will always try to ac-
commodate multiple user groups.

lcohol screenings will now be done at
any random time day or night to
ensure safer roads in the City, traffic
official DesirBenadiewarned at a subcoun-
cil meeting held last week.
Benadie said this initiative was one of
many strategies to be implemented in 2016
to improve service delivery in Cape Town.
Statistics are alarming. Driving under
the influence of alcohol is by nomeans prob-
lematic during night time hours only.
In recent months, countless daytime
drivers have been found guilty of this of-
fence, especially in themornings when driv-
ers are still under the influence from thepre-
vious nights drinking, she said.
Such screenings will be done at major
roadblock operations around the clock.
Apart from this project theCity is appoint-
ing 60 new traffic officers city wide.
The department has also requested addi-
tional unmarked vehicles to monitor mov-
ing violations in the far northern areas of
Kraaifontein and Brackenfell, she said.
A specialised taxi unit will also be de-
ployed to focus on all taxi issues.

Graad 1-leerder van die Laerskool
Bastion in Brackenfell is erg ge-
traumatiseerd nadat sy verlede
week na bewering met n mes gedreig is.
Die voorval het Donderdagaand by die
skool se graad 1-atletiekbyeenkoms plaas-
gevind.
Die Brackenfell-polisie het die voorval
Vrydag bevestig.
der is.
Die skool het ons by die oueraande
mooi gevra om stories van sosiale media
af te hou, en dus glo ek die skool sal binne-
kort kommentaar oor die insident le-
wer, het sy geskryf.
Sy voeg by dat daar baie teenstrydighe-
de rondom die voorval verskyn het in die
oorspronklike inskrywing en dat sy wag
vir die skool om te s wat die ware storie
is.
Ossie de Jong meen dat die skool eerder
pro-aktief moet wees deur inligting aan-
gaande sulke voorvalle so gou moontlik
self op sosiale media te plaas om sodoende
gerugte te vermy.
Hester Botha s ... as dinge nie met al-
mal gedeel wil word nie, word iets wegge-
steek..
Dit is nmeningwat Charmaine Siebrits
deel as sy s: ... as daar iets by n skool
gebeur waar my kind skoolgaan, voel ek
dis my reg om te weet.
Ek glo ook dat as dit n belangrike of
ernstige situasie is, die skool kommunika-
sie daaroor moet uitstuur, skryf Char-
maine.
Skoolhoof
By navraag Maandagoggend het Chris
sal kommentaarkan lewer sodra amptena-
re ons oor al die feite ingelig het, het sy
Maandag ges.

A
phishing scam in which some people
allegedly lost up to R20 000 has flared
up again one of the latest near vic-
tims aDurbanville resident who advertised
on OLX and Gumtree.
Victims are contacted and told that a Pay-
Fast transaction was made for the adver-
tised items and they then receive an email
with proof of payment, but it is false, warns
Greg Smit, support lead of PayFast.
Mirchelle Snyman told TygerBurger she
advertised some items on OLX and Gum-
tree among others an exhaust pipe for a
Kawasaki motorbike for R4 000.
She was contacted on 16 January by a
woman via OLX by email, stating that she
was interested in buying the pipe.
The woman said she was working over-
seas on a ship, but would like to buy the ex-
haust pipe for her sons motorbike and
wanted to pay via PayFast, as she consid-
ered it the safest.
She said she will have the pipe collected
by courier once she has processed her pay-
ment, which will include R4 000 for the ex-
haust pipe and R1 250 for the courier fee
plus a R50 fee to cover the payment at Shop-
rite.
She asked Snyman to pay over the R1 300
at Shoprite to the courier on her behalf, and
only then the payment will reflect on her
PayFast account. She then received a proof
of payment of R5 300 from PayFast.
Luckily Snyman contacted PayFast, who
confirmed no payment of R5 300 was made
into her PayFast account. She was also in-
formed that the email of confirmation of
payment sent was false.
I noticed on the emails that it was sent
from [email protected] and
[email protected], Snyman said.
She said she was told by the call centre
of PayFast that it was a scamand thatmany
victims were conned out of their money
in one incident R20 000.
Smit of PayFast told TygerBurger people
should always be vigilant and review the
senders email address.
PayFast emails will only come from ad-
dresses ending with payfast.co.za.
The way that this scam is conducted us-
ing our brand is as follows: A seller on sites
such asGumtreewill be contacted by a buy-
erwho insists on payingusingPayFast, and
requests that they register an account on
PayFast to receive the payment.
Once the seller has registered an ac-
count, the scammer will contact them say-
ing they have made the payment.
The seller will receive a fake email stat-
ing that they have received funds through
PayFast. In this email the seller is request-
ed to send confirmation of delivery to Pay-
Fast before the funds are released.
The sellerwill send out their items as re-
quested although no payment was actually
made. The scammer receives the item and
the seller never receives the money.
According to Smit this is not a new scam.
Fraudsters have been falsely using the
PayFast brand for the past couple of years,
and I am sure for a longer period using oth-
er systems such as PayPal.
This scam flares up randomly through
the course of the year. The best defence
against this and anyother phishing attempt
is education and that the more people who
are aware of this kind of scams and how
they operate, the better.
V Visit www.payfast.co.za for more information on
how to recognise a phishing scam and what to do.

Snake bites are rife this summer
The presence of puff adders (pictured) and Cape cobras has seen an increase in the number of
snake bites in pets, says a local veterinary hospital with several branches across the Peninsula.
Snake bite treatment is a very expensive affair, but can save the live of a pet.
MICHELLE LINNERT
@linnertmb
S
nakes soaking up the sun and slither-
ing away from veld fires often end up
in residential backyards,making them
a serious adversary to domestic pets.
Because of this, veterinarians Ryan Nor-
rie andNolanMoss at the TygerbergAnimal
Hospital say they have recently seen an in-
crease in the number of snake bites in pets.
We have definitely seen an increase this
year, Moss says. There seems to be an in-
crease across the Cape Peninsula.
He sayswhilenoaccuratenumbers areyet
available, the largest chunk of the bites are
taking place close to Table Mountain.
The reasons are simple, Moss says.
Snakes aremore active in hot, dryweather,
which may account for the increased num-
bers recently.
Fires send snakes fleeing to gardens, houses
Norrie agrees: Snakes are cold-blooded
animals that raise their body temperature
by lying in the sun or lower it by crawling
into the shade. So this means snake bites
will be less likely to happen in winter time
as the snakes are hibernating.
Also something to think about is all of the
fires we are experiencing you find thatmost
wildlife will move to safer areas, and this
could be your back garden or even your
house, Norrie says. They have seen mostly
Cape cobra or puff adder snake bites over the
last two months, Moss adds.
He explains a bit more about the chemical
reactions caused by the toxins: Cape cobras
are neurotoxic and cause paralysis of the res-
piratory muscles, leading to death. Puff ad-
ders are cytotoxic and bites cause tissue
swelling, with fluid, blood and protein loss.
In both cases anti-venom treatment redu-
ces the severity of clinical signs but must be
given in the early stages, Moss says.
According to him, cobra bite victims need
to be placed on a ventilator, normally for one
to three days, and they require intensive care,
while puff adder victims often develop shock
and multiple organ failure, requiring inten-
sive care and usually multiple plasma and
blood transfusions. Treatment is not cheap.
The cost of treatment ... can escalate be-
yond R30 000. Many animals unfortunately
die before they are presented to the clinic.
Moss adds cobra bites that are treated ag-
gressively and early, usually have a more
promisingoutcome, butnot sowithpuff adder
bites. Even with aggressive treatment the
prognosis for puff adderbites is always guard-
ed, Moss says. I recently treated a staff
members dog that required four blood
transfusions, six plasma transfusions, and
took over one month to fully recover.
Norrie says theyve seen some really sad
cases, but its not all doom and gloom.
Most of the time if a pet pulls through
from an attack there are hardly any after-
effects, but possible scarring or muscle
loss from dead tissue has been seen.
You wont see it very often, but if a pa-
tient was bitten on an extremity, amputa-
tion can be an option to save the pets life.
We have seen some heartbreaking cas-
es where the outcome was death. In one
case we had two rottweilers that were bit-
ten by the same snake and both dogs were
put down due to their state, says Norrie.
Owners need to keep clear
He adds when pets are bitten, owners
need to keep clear of the snakes to avoid
being bitten themselves. So how can own-
ers avoid pets getting bitten?
There is no way of avoiding snake bites
at home short of permanently housing the
pet, says Moss.
Pet owners need to be aware of the risks
when taking their animals on walks, and
adds they need to learn to identify the two
snakes. Neither snake is particularly ag-
gressive. Pet owners should never attempt
to confront a snake, Moss says.
Once bitten, time is of the essence, espe-
cially where the Cape cobra is concerned.
Pet owners should acquaint themselves
with practices that are able to treat snake
bites. If a pet is bitten by either snake, they
should immediately be transported to a 24-
hour facility that possesses a ventilator and
stocks anti-venom.Norrie says their facili-
ty is one of few that stocks the required anti-
venom and is open at all hours. The anti-
venomwe have on stock is the same used on
humans. Please note that it is a very expen-
sive medication.

espite local elections coming up this
year, ward councillors from Bracken-
fell and Kraaifontein on opposing
sides of the political divide will have to
work closely together for the benefit of the
community, said Grant Twigg in his open-
ing speech at the first subcouncil meeting
for 2016.
The meeting took place in chambers at
the Kraaifontein municipal building last
Wednesday, where Twigg said a well-oiled
partnership between councillors is the only
vehicle to meet expectations of residents.
The focus for the year ahead will be to
continue to deliver on our strategic objec-
tives, build upon the work already complet-
ed, and take advantage of newopportunities
as they arise, he said.
This council sets itself a high bench-
mark, as this community deserves the best
facilities and services, andwhat an exciting
time we have ahead of us.
Twigg reiterated the sterling reputation
that subcouncil 2 has in terms of service de-
livery, leadership and prudent financial
management.
He mentioned that the first registration
weekend for local elections will take place
on 5 and 6March and urgedmembers of the
public to make sure they were registered at
their local voting stations to be eligible to
vote in the upcoming elections. He further-
more expressed his concern over the loss of
municipal staff in the planning, transport
and roads and stormwater departments,
due to resignation and transfers.
The fact that there is currently not a full
staff compliment indicates interference
with services and we have requested a re-
port indicating future planning in resolving
this, Twigg said.
To kick off the new year, Twigg an-
nounced a Sassa information session to be
held at the Youth Centre in Scottsdene on
12 February. We will address concerns
such as unseen deductions and other proc-
esses and social development minister Al-
bert Fritz will form part of this initiative.

In the high-tech world of the modern neo-
natal ICU there is no substitute for breast
milk. When a vulnerable babys mother is
unable to supply breast milk, donated
breast milk can offer this life-saving gift
from another mother.
Neonatologist Dr Alan Horn of Groote
Schuur Hospital believes that the practice
of milk banking is still in its infancy glo-
bally and especially in South Africa.
I expect it will steadily increase in pro-
file. Donating breast milk is an act that in-
volves the least pain and the most gain,
compared to any other human tissue or or-
gan donation. It is potentially life-saving
and is worth more than equipment or staff.
The term milk bank is perfect it simul-
taneously describes the safety and value of
donated milk.
Milk Matters is such a breast milk bank
devoted to saving the lives of primarily pre-
mature babies in neonatal ICUs.
The need for donor milk is mainly when
a mother is too ill to provide breast milk
or is unable to physically be with or regu-
larly visit her baby in hospital. Donormilk
may also be needed for a short time in the
case of multiple births such as triplets,
when the mother may initially not have
enough breast milk for her babies.
Milk Matters, a registered non-profit or-
ganisation, started providing donor breast
milk to the neonatal ICUs of Cape Towns
biggest state hospitals in 2003.
To date 30 hospitals, in both the state and
private sector, have received donor milk
fromMilkMatters and inaddition the orga-
nisation has helped five hospitals set up
their own in-house milk banks.
Most of the donor milk goes to babies in
government hospitals, where the need is
greatest.
Since just 50ml of breast milk can feed a
baby of less than a kilogram for 24 hours,
mothers do not need to donate large quanti-
ties to make a significant impact.
Milk Matters provides donors with ster-
ile containers, which can be collected from
one of the 25 depots, where batches of fro-
zen milk can also be delivered. All milk is
pasteurised.

A motor vehicle, if driven
recklessly, inconsiderately or
under the influence of alcohol
or drugs, is a lethal weapon. It
can take lives, both guilty and
innocent (victims), as borne
out by our road traffic collision
data. In most cases, road users
wilfully disobey our adequate
road traffic laws. Offenders
found guilty of contravening
any of the aforementioned
offences seldom, if ever,
receive suitable sentences.
Government does not take
road deaths seriously if they
did, the annual collision/death
rate on our roads should have
decreased ages ago. Govern-
ments stale annual response
has always been zero toler-
ance and the full might of the
law will take place. No, the
carnage continues!
In my view, the following
needs to be implemented:
1. Dedicated traffic courts in
all major centres: Staff (magis-
trates/prosecutors) to receive
specific training with regards
to the road traffic act/regula-
tions etc. Cases must be
speedily dealt with.
2. Law enforcement: Traffic
officers must operate on a
24-hour duty roster as SAPS
do. Currently law enforcement
officers have the latest and
best technology at their
disposal, including vehicles,
but most go off duty at
22:00/23:00, except during road
blocks 24:00. Visibility on
patrol is vital.
3. State laboratories for
testing blood samples: Every
major centre must have such a
centre. Private laboratories
(with the necessary checks and
balances) can also be roped in.
4. Sentencing drunk and
reckless drivers: First time
offenders found guilty six
month imprisonment without
the option of a fine. Harsh?
Yes, but our road carnage
requires this.
We, the citizens, demand
urgent action right now! The
Road carnage:
action needed!
Municipal water tariffs in-
creased on and from 1 January.
I have just received my
December account and the
meter was read on 21 December!
That leaves 10 days usage as
carry-over to the January
accounts higher tariff. Is this
deliberate?
I have a question for the
municipality: What are you
going to do about this?
ACCOUNT NO: 131275974
Amanda Glen
Ernest Sonnenberg, mayoral
committee member for utility
services of the City of Cape
Town, responds: The City
has approximately 650 000
meters to read, and this
cannot all take place on one
day. Because of this, the
City calculates the daily
average between two meter
readings, determines the
daily average, and appor-
tions the water consumption
across the two billing peri-
ods. In the case of this
customer, their daily average
consumption for 10 days will
be calculated according to
level 1 tariffs and the re-
mainder (after 1 January)
will be calculated according
to level 2 tariffs.

SLICE OF LIFE
Savingwater:
howwise are
you really?
The message over the last few months
has been clear some parts of the
country are facing a drought and dam
levels are low; we need to save water!
In Cape Town the City imposed strict
water restrictions, even going as far as
promising to fine households and busi-
nesses that dont save at least 20%. The
latter has left a bitter taste in many a
household, especially those that have
been living water wise before the water
restrictions were imposed.
If youre already not opening a tap to
water your garden, recycling your bath
water into the flower beds, catching the
first few drops of cold shower water in a
bucket to use for cleaning the dishes
later and keeping the swimming pool just
full enough so the pump can run, then
what more can you do to save?
Water wise or not, we dont realise how
much water we use (and let go to waste)
on a day-to-day basis.
Its only once you start counting the
litres to fill the sink, boil the kettle and
flush the toilet, not to mention use in
your daily hygiene routine and for
drinking water, that reality sinks in and
you realise how much your household
consumes not saving as much as you
thought you did.
The fact is, water is a precious re-
source and if we dont try to save more,
we are in line to suffer more. So next
time, before you open a tap, think ... and
keep living water wise even after the
rains have come and the water restric-
tions have gone.

Lives will not be saved by

When last did you see law
enforcement on the roads of
Brackenfell for instance?
If authorities really wish to
save lives they must place more
visible mobile law enforcement
on the tar!
On Old Paarl Road taxis pass

What do we want?
Its a fallacy that speed kills.
It has no mind or soul.
It is attitude that kills, or
lack of it in traffic control. We
need visible law enforcement to
save lives. The benefit to traffic
authorities will come in the
increase of fine income and to
the public of saved lives and
safer driving.
Licence renewal also needs a
good look at.
Our road structure is of
course way behind new require-

With the thousands of new

yearly, where will it all end?
Those currently practising on

His books saved him
W
hen Philani Dladla
cracked open his first
book a heavy political
read he had no idea hed one day
become a published author him-
self.
As a 12-year-old boy readingThe
Last White Parliament by Freder-
ik van Zyl Slabbert, he also had no
inkling of the journey he would
have to endure to write his own
book.
It was this journey that Dladla
recently shared at the Big Issue
breakfast, and his work to inspire
others to start reading.
The regular breakfast event is
used to raise funds in support of
the magazine.
Dladla spent years sleeping un-
der the Nelson Mandela Bridge in
Johannesburg, trapped in drug
addiction. It was his love for
books, inspired when he was 12,
which ultimately saved him.
His first book was a gift on his
birthday from his mothers em-
ployer. Growing up in rural
KwaZulu Natal, Dladla could
hardly speak English when he
was given that book. But he pored
over it, intent on understanding it
and unlocking the promise of
more books. The book collection
ofhismothers employerwas later
left to him.
In his early twenties, Dladla
worked as a health caregiver. But
the freedom that came with the
pay cheque saw him experiment-
ing with drugs.
It was something I didnt have
before. I was overwhelmed by the
independence.
His addiction soon spiralled out
of control, and he started selling
his possessions to buy drugswhen
he ran out of money.
Drugs changed my life. I de-
pended on them. I could go days
without eating, but I couldnt go
four hours without drugs. I sold
my things and eventually, when I
couldnt pay my rent anymore, I
was kicked out of my place.
The only place Dladla felt he
could go was the bridge, where he
livedwith other drug users.When
he arrived, he was forced to hand
over his clothes as rent.
He managed to hang onto his
books, and eventually he started
selling them to make a living. He
reviewed each book, selling them
to motorists with prices deter-
mined by how good the book was.
I had nothing left. All I had
weremy books. I had toworkwith
what I had, he says.
One day, Dladla was spotted by
a young filmmaker,whoproduced
a documentary on his mobile
bookshop.
I sharedmy story. By that time
I was clean for nine months and
running a soup kitchen for my
friends living under the bridge. I
was also running a reading club
for children in nearby Joubert
Park, he says.
The film spurred an influx of do-
nations which allowed him to ex-
pand the reading club and teach
children computer skills.
Dladla has now told this story in
a book, The Pavement Bookworm.
When I was on the street I
wouldwrite down everything that
happened, hoping one day some-
one would publish it. But I didnt
write it to make money. I wrote it
to tell the story. Ive always loved
telling stories and, putting smiles
on faces using books.
Philani Dladla has written a book, The Pavement Bookworm, about how
books helped him quit his drug addiction and move off the streets.

MONIQUE DUVAL

As businesses and donors tighten their
purse strings, a local child care organisation
is appealing for help.
Founded in 2005, Home of Hope in Table
Viewcares for childrenwhohavebeenaban-
doned, abused, raped, neglected, born with
Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD)
or infected with HIV.
For chief executive Eleanor Brook keep-
ing the organisations doors open is a daunt-
ing and difficult task, but a strong belief in
creating an environment for these children
to prosper, continues to motivate the team.
Last year the organisation acquired a
property in Milnerton which formerly
housed an old age home. The house, consist-
ing of 18 rooms, will serve as a home for the
children in their care. Shortly before Christ-
mas a water pipe at the home burst and sev-
eral household contents were damaged.
Speaking to TygerBurger as the organisa-
tionplans for theyear ahead,Brookexplains
funding has slowed downwithmany donors
and businesses feeling the pinch.
The funding has become less and less and
we have gone into discussions with donors
and businesses who use to donate regularly
and found that many businesses are feeling
the pinch of the economy. As times get
tougher, they have to cut back on donations.
We are caring for 19 children in the home
and 37 at the school. If we dont source fund-
ing soon, we fear we may have to close.
With staggering statistics on the amount
of children born with FASD each year,
Brook explains the organisations work is
not only aimed at assisting children but also
various communities. She says many are
not aware of the challenges and limitations
that children born with FASD face.
Our children are the future and FASD
children require special care to help them
reach their full potential.Whennot cared for
properly or given an opportunity, these chil-
dren often grow up into adults who fall into
a life of alcoholism, drug abuse and home-
lessness. These factors then impact nega-
tively on society and while we can only take
so many children, we know that we have
made a difference.
AtHomeofHope, each child gets a fighting
chance to be the best they can be. Cared for
by caregivers and social workers, the chil-
dren are given a structured lifestyle which
helps them cope and progress.
Brook says there are many ways the com-
munity can help either by assisting with
funding or volunteering to assist with ad-
ministration.

A
fter current Mrs Cape Town Sunette
Nieuwoudt, wife of popular Afrikaans
singer Hugo Nieuwoudt, last week un-
expectedly and for unknown reasons
stepped down from the title, Diane Nel, the
2014 title holder from Brackenfell, took over
the reigns again.
Organisers made the announcement last
week.
It is with much regret that we announce
that SunetteNieuwoudthas steppeddownas
Mrs Cape Town 2015, due to a difficult time
that she is currently experiencing. We wish
her all the best and will keep her in our
prayers. Mrs Cape Town 2014, Diane Nel,
will succeed Sunette as Mrs Cape Town for
2015, said Juanita Smit from the Role Mod-
els Foundation.
According to Smit, Nel agreed to complete
the 2015 reign after it came to light that not
the first or second runners-up were able to
stand in for Nieuwoudt.
Nel said it came as a shock to her.
When the directors of Role Models con-
tacted me on Monday morning (last week),
it came as a surprise as I knew that the first
princess would have been a good candidate.
I was told that she gracefully declined be-
cause of personal obligations and the title
was offered to me. Never have I imagined
that something like this could happen, but
at the same time Im proud to know that I
can do this with the support of my family,
friends, supporters andmy sponsors. Thank
you for all the phone calls, SMSs and messa-
ges I received these past 24hours. Thankyou
to each of you supporting me once again in
this life changing journey, she said on her
Facebook page.
Smit said Nel was the obvious choice due
to the exceptional job she did during her
reign in 2014. What impressedmemost was
the fact that she continued with her charity
work, visiting all our projects even after her
year ended, said Smit.
Thank you to Diane for being willing to
step in to support the projects of RoleModels
Foundation. The sash and crown will be be-
stowed upon Diane in due course.
Nieuwoudt declined to comment.
Hardly back in the saddle, Nel was on her
way to Worcester on Wednesday to hand
over a cheque of R86 000 to the Eden School
for special needs children on behalf of phi-
lanthropists Phil and Annetjie Anderson,
who currently live and work in the city of
Al-Khobar in Saudi Arabia.
The Andersons took up the plight of this
school more than a year ago after reading
in TygerBurger online about Nels charity
work in Worcester. Since then they have
succeeded in raising an amount of R225 000
for the school by organising several fund-
raising projects in their expat community.
One night Phil and his friends dressed up
aswomenand collectedmoney from local so-
cial clubs in the international compound.
On this night they almost raised R20 000.
On another occasion we had a fun run and
I also took up a part time job as bar lady
over weekends of which this entire salary
went into the fund, saysAnnetjie, a special-
ised nursing sister in neonatology and divi-
sional director forWomens Health Services
at the SAAD specialised hospital.
The Andersons were elated to hear of the
gratitude the school expressed. It makes all
