slaaf was weens sy werk by die Du Preez-

    wynlandgoed, omdat hy gereeld klinte

moes onthaal tot in die vroe oggendure.

Hy het toe sy drankverslawing begin be-

    klinkasof hy teleurgesteldwas indiewynbe-

Hy doen

tans aansoek om regshulp en sal volgende

Vrydag (12 Desember) weer vir n borgaan-

    soek verskyn.

Daarword verwagdat die staat borgtog sal

teenstaan. Boshoff bly in aanhouding tot sy

    volgendeverskyning.Volgensdie polisie het

hy reeds n hangende saak teen hom, maar

    daarkon sovernogniebevestigwordpresies

waarvoor nie. Boshoff het al voorheen ge-

    vangenisstraf vir bedrog uitgedien.

While they were joyfully singing at their

end-of-year show, learners from a music

    school were being robbed backstage.

To top it off, one of the culprits was cap-

tured and later released by a security guard

before Bellville police could get there to ar-

    rest her.

The scene transpired last Sundayat theLi-

ana Marx Music School in Brackenfells an-

nual show, for which they hired their own

security to guard the parking lot at their

    venue, the Bellville Civic Centre.

    During our performance an unauthor-

ised person entered the civic centres cloak-

room from the back entrance, said Liana.

The person stole six cellphones, an iPad

tablet and an amount of R120, which were

removed from the students backpacks in

    the cloakroom, she said.

While the person was leaving the cloak-

room with the stolen goods, she was appre-

hended by my stage managers, she said.

The stolen items were found in her pos-

session by my stage manager and returned

to their rightful owners, Liana said.

    Thewomanwas thendetained by the secu-

rity guard and the Bellville police were con-

    tacted.

Liana said the next morning she logged

the incidentwithher contact at the civic cen-

tre fromwhom she had rented the venue, for

further investigation and steps to be taken.

A parent, who felt the beautiful produc-

    tionwasmarred by this horrible incident,

told TygerBurger: Liana got her own secu-

rity to look after the cars parked in front, but

was told her guards would not be allowed at

the back of the venue, else she would have

    stationed them there.

The parent said the organisers found the

back doors to the venue had been left open.

According to a manager at the civic cen-

    tre, the facility management department

    contracted security guards.

They have a risk management depart-

ment that facilitates at all public buildings,

    the official said.

City of Cape Town maintains there is no

cause for concern. A parent who wishes to

    remain anonymous told TygerBurger they

    werent consulted.

We dont want it there! Nobody asked us

for our opinion, yet it is our children who

are at risk here. Too many people living

close to cell mast towers have complained

about headaches and other ailments, and

nothing has been disproved, said the resi-

    dent.

    Possible health hazards

Ward councillor Carin Brynard says the

report on the application for this tower was

served before the local sub-council three

months ago, where it was not supported by

her or the rest of the subcouncil.

As a subcouncil we did not believe that

such a tower should be erected in close

proximity to a creche. We felt that evenwith

    no scientific evidence underscoring this,

the installation of the tower could possibly

    pose health hazards, says Brynard.

However, an appeal was lodged and the

    subcouncils decision overturned.

Members of the appeals committee felt

there is no scientific evidence to support

the health concern voiced by the subcoun-

cil, Brynard explains. She attributes this

decision to adherence to national legisla-

    tion, which underscores the international

    belief that thesemastshold extremely limit-

ed health risks. In a report from the depart-

ment of healths directorate of radiation

control it is stated there is no scientific ba-

sis for any allegation of adverse health ef-

fects due to electromagnetic fields (EMF)

emitted by base stations. The directorate

    used the World Health Organisations

(WHO) International EMFProject as its pri-

mary source of information. The above re-

    search found that the low-powerednon-ion-

    ising radio frequencywaves transmitted by

cellphone masts, do not pose any health

    risks to humans.

According to theWHO, a large number of

studies were performed over the last 20

years to assess the potential health riskmo-

bile phones pose to humans, and to date no

    adverse effects have been established.

Furthermore, research has not been able

to prove a causal relationship between ex-

posure to EMF and self-reported symptoms

of what is known as electromagnetic hyper-

    sensitivity.

    Electromagnetic hypersensitivity is con-

sidered a variety of health problems report-

ed by individuals. The symptomsmost com-

    monly experienced include skin redness

and a tingling or burning sensation, head-

    aches, fatigue, tiredness, concentration dif-

    ficulties, dizziness, nausea, heart palpita-

    tion, and digestive disturbances.

The WHO, however, holds fast that these

symptoms are not related to EMF exposure.

In another background report the WHO

states these symptoms might arise from

other environmental factors such as the

flicker from fluorescent lights, glare from

video displays, poor indoor air quality or

stress. A complete formal risk assessment

of all studied health outcomes will be con-

ducted by the WHO by 2016.

    Findings questioned

    Electro Magnetic Radiation South Africa

(EMRSA), is a local civic group in the south-

    ern suburbswhobelievedifferently andhas

    successfully protested against the erection

of cell phone masts in their areas. On their

website they site several medical articles

questioning the findings about the health

    risks associated with EMF.

Their protests resulted in two masts be-

ing taken down over the years, the last by

Vodacom in 2011. In the latest of their re-

monstrations, 120 people on 28 November

this year protested against the erection of

a cellphone tower immediately adjacent to

homes with young children. In a press re-

lease EMRSA asked why big corporations

such as cellphone companies have more

rights in an area than the rate payers and

    property owners in that suburb?

They claim only the immediate neigh-

bours in the area of thenewMTNmastwere

    consulted in this regard.

    The Vredekloof community expressed

the same concern. According to some par-

ents at the creche, only the property owners

directly adjacent to the tower were notified

    in terms of regulations.

    JohanvanderMerwe,maycomember for

    energy, environmental and spatial plan-

ning, says the city followed all the correct

procedures in terms of the application sub-

mission. He confirmed that only the sur-

    rounding property owners were notified.

Notification was done in terms of the

citys notification policy and included sur-

rounding property owners...as well as the

Vredekloof CID, he said. Vodacom spokes-

person Bongo Futuse confirmed the mast

    belongs to a company calledAmericanTow-

ers Company (ATC). They are one of a few

    infrastructure providers around that build

sites and then approach operators to lease

from them. We have been approached but

have not responded formally. A lot of fac-

tors will have to be considered before we

make a final decision. We will communi-

cate our final answer toTygerBurger in due

    time, he said.

It was very traumatising and we are all

badly shaken up by the incident, says shop

owner Manuel Dos Santos after an armed

robbery at Shamrock Fisheries last week

    Wednesday.

Dos Santos says four armed men walked

into the shop at about 19:15, pretending to

    be customers.

The men ordered fish and while wai-

ting for their order pulled out four guns

and demanded the cash in the register.

There was myself, six of my staff mem-

bers and five other customers waiting for

their orders in the shop at the time, he

    says.

Everybody in the shopwas herded to the

back while one of the men demanded the

cash in the register. Another took one cus-

tomers handbag and cellphone and they all

    hurried out, he says.

Dos Santos pressed the panic button bec-

koning the Kraaifontein police to the shop

    within four minutes.

In a way we expected it, with all the ar-

med robberies in the area lately. I am sure

theywatched the shop for awhile beforehit-

ting. As shop owners we feel very vulnera-

ble. Something drastic has to be done to

curb these robberies, Dos Santos says.

No one was injured during the incident

and no arrests have been made.

The City of Cape Town on Friday announ-

ced their plans to rotate the current load

    shedding schedule to minimise inconveni-

    ence for residents.

For the last couple of weekends blackouts

between 20:00 and 22:00 from Friday to Sun-

day, darkened many a household mood in

    Brackenfell.

at the thought of what we had to face again

this weekend. This is a primetime slot over

weekends and enduring it the whole wee-

kend from Friday to Sunday was becoming

a real pain, said one resident.

Acting mayco member for utility servi-

ces, Brett Herron, said the city is to rotate

the schedule as soon as they have received

    the necessary approval from Eskom.

A draft schedule has been submitted for

their consideration. This schedule will be

published on the citys website so that resi-

dents have immediate access to the latest

information as soon as approval is gran-

    ted, he said.

The city could not at this stage comment

on precisely how the rotation system will

work or when it will come into operation.

It is expected the current timeslots will

remain the same, but be rotated to different

areas of the city for specified times.

    Residents are advised to familiarise

themselves with the schedule and to switch

off all electronics and appliances when the

power is due to go off. Sometimes when po-

wer is restored there is a spike in the volt-

    age, which can damage electronics.Resi-

dents should unplug electronic items du-

    ring the load shedding period.

V Residents can call the City on 0860 103 089 for

more information about load shedding, or visit

die geesdrif demp by Klassieke Kers-

    gehoor waardeer is.

Nou reeds n instelling by Klassieke Kers-

Three men were arrested following a short

chase by police in De la Haye in Bellville af-

ter midnight last Wednesday in what looked

like a foiled attempt to steal from a bakkie.

Members of the Bellville police were con-

ducting late night patrols in an unmarked

car last Wednesday when they came across

a suspicious green Hyundai in Sanlamhof,

said Captain Fienie Nimb, spokesperson for

    the Bellville police.

The crime prevention unit spotted the ca-

re at about 23:45 in Strand Road.

The suspicious vehicle was standing be-

hind a white bakkie in Conradie Street, at

the robot. All three men (from the Hyundai

got out and) approached the bakkie, said

    Nimb.

She said the men then spotted the approa-

ching unmarked police vehicle and made a

dash into the nearby De la Haye suburb.

In Stockenstroom Street the vehicle was

    apprehended, she said.

It turns out the men were driving around

with a 9 mm Parabellum Z88 firearm, which

had its serial number and ammunition re-

    moved.

Nimb said the suspects also had a gas pis-

tol hidden beneath one of the front seats.

The threemen are between 33 and 35 years

old, from Belhar, and were arrested for pos-

session of a prohibited or unlicensed fire-

    arm.

    Sergeant Trevor Doubell and Constables

Lindall Ockhuis and Johnay Fielies made

    the arrests, she said.

    I salute all courageous women

    who stand up to adversaries

    and tragedies to become the

    inspiration for future women

who choose to follow in their

    footsteps.

    They inspire people by their

    exemplary life-attitude life is

good, even when its bad. And

when life seems to crush and

to suffocate them, they find a

way to deal with and overcome

    it.

Bad news is not the end of

their lives, its a season, that

too will pass. Crises bring out

    your strength and your weak-

nesses, but it also brings the

    person under a spotlight. How

    are you reacting to these

    crises? People will debate,

    reason, predict and form

    strong opinions based on your

    character, personality and

    draw from own experiences.

    Strong courageous women

crack, lose it, they cry real

    tears, get frustrated, mad and

    weak, but they manage to

move on slowly and inch by

    inch they edge forward,

    leaning in towards their

    victory.

They refuse to be left behind

when life always moves on. Do

not believe the lie that you

    cannot, have not and the

final blow will not. Didnt a

    wise person say: Where there

is a will there is a way? Find

that way and you will find life.

    of law breakers is senseless.

    Changing the Firearms

    Control Act makes firearm

    ownership more onerous for the

    law-abiding citizen; after all,

    criminals by definition dont

    obey laws anyway.

    LEWENSKIEKIE

    Spend your

    cash at home

    this Christmas

The festive season is well upon us.

    Christmas decorations are up and

stores are playing carols and Boney M,

    but while our consumer-driven society

urges us to spend, one has to wonder if

there may not be a more responsible way

to give in to the Christmas splurge.

One suggestion is to support your local

community by buying local. By sourcing

gifts from local stores and small business

owners, we can contribute to the econo-

mies in our area and invest at home to

    build better socio-economic environments.

As long as local stores can keep their

doors open, the areas surrounding them

    are generally well-maintained and when

those store owners spend their profits in

their community they create a cycle of

    improvement.

    Generally, financially healthy commu-

nities have less crime and violence,

    creating better living conditions.

There are plenty of local Christmas

craft markets in and around the North-

ern Suburbs with specially made crafts,

preserves or even baked goods that make

    meaningful gifts.

If markets arent your thing, there are

plenty of other local businesses needing

    support. TygerBurgers Christmas Shop-

per advertisements are filled with ideas

    on where to shop.

When you choose local options to spoil

your loved ones, you are helping those

around you spoil their loved ones too.

Consumerism is inevitable, but we can

choose how and where to spend our

    money.

A total of 600 teddy bears have been

distributed to Children in need this

year by a 14-year-old teenager from

    Durbanville.

    As Miss Teen Hope International

    South Africa, Marenique van Wyk,

a Grade 8 learner at Stellenberg

High School, has been actively in-

    volved in conducting various outre-

    ach days.

The teddy bears all had the same

    specialmessage attached to them: I

    amaJesusTeddy, pleasewhisper all

your sadness and worries in my

    ear...

There are so many children that

often feel alone or despondent about

their lives. They also often have no-

one close to them to talk to; someone

to share their fears with and that

can give them hope, says Mareni-

    que.

    The initiative started whenMare-

nique, while a learner at Gene Louw

    Primary School, became involved

    with Hope Pageants International.

    This pageant gives children and

women a platform to use their ta-

lents to make a difference in com-

    munities.

    My platform since 2012, being

    part ofActingHopeand theHopePa-

    geants International, has always

    been education and improving emo-

    tional andphysical factors to enhan-

ce education in all children from

    disadvantaged backgrounds, said

    the teen.

The projects she aimed to do this

    year helped children to attend

school and allowed them to reach

    their full potential.

    This was achieved by providing

opportunities for them to learn new

    skills, and by providing stationery

and other equipment needed for ef-

    fective teaching.

    Apart fromher Jesus Bear project

in Ruyterwacht and at the Tyger-

    berg Childrens Hospital, other pro-

jects she has been involved with in-

clude a desk and chair project, a

    school shoes project, a stationery

project, an Easter Hope in Gansbaai

project, a Hope in Sharing project,

a toys project, as well as various

food projects in Bellville South, Fi-

santekraal and at the Attie vanWyk

    Primary School outside Durbanvil-

    le.

I believe that I can keep on ma-

king a significant impact on child-

rens education in the future by in-

    forming, empowering and educa-

ting others about the need in our

    communities, she said.

    After handing out educational

toys, books and Jesus Bears at Ty-

    gerbear this week, Marenique was

also invited to join the team of vo-

    lunteers.

In 2015 she will be involved at Ty-

gerbear as a volunteer for educating

the children in the trauma unit.

Marenique has a desire to become

a medical doctor one day, and wor-

    king closely with trauma children

will also be a stepping stone towards

    her future dreams.

    As a titleholder forHope Pageants

    International SA, Marenique will

    also be joining an international

    competition and outreach in Zanzi-

bar, where she will compete for an

    international title or ambassadors-

    hip in community work.

Founded in 2012 by Ingrid Burger,

Acting Hope is a project through

    whichmany children andwomen in

South Africa in need of emotional

    support can be helped.

    Hope Pageants International SAs

    founder and chief executive officer,

    Ingrid Burger and Zelda Thompson,

    invites all companies or individuals

that wants to get involved, to con-

    tact them on Ingrid@hopepage-

One of three policemen involved in the bru-

tal arrest of a Kraaifontein granny has been

suspended and is faces disciplinary charges.

A video taken by a bystander, which is

currently being shared on social networks,

depicts the incident which took place in full

    view of the community.

    eNCAreported thatRoselineAppolis,who

has 11 grandchildren, was arrested on Sun-

day 23 November after she intervened in a

street fight when her daughter was slapped.

On the horrific video one can clearly see

how Appolis is dragged around on the floor

and her head trampled upon by one of the

    policemen.

Afterwatching the footage in question an

    investigation was launched and prelimi-

nary findings indicate that the assailants

are indeed police officials based at Kraaifon-

tein police station. Contact has been made

with the victim in an effort to encourage her

to open a criminal case against the police of-

ficials. A process is currently underway to

    institute internal disciplinary steps, said

    provincial media spokesperson Lieutenant

    Tembinkosi Kinana.

Lieutenant Thembi Gwe of the Kraaifon-

tein police station told TygerBurger steps

will be taken against the member who tram-

    pled the womens head.

    Western Cape provincial commissioner,

Arno Lamoer expressed outrage at what he

    considers unbecoming behaviour by police

officials who are entrusted with the safety

    of members of the public.

What infuriates one is that this incident

occurs at a time when there is heightened

    awareness of violence against vulnerable

groups such as women, children and the eld-

erly. We undertake to ensure that the inves-

tigation is conducted in a fair and just man-

ner. Once the investigation is finalised the

outcome will be communicated. Police bru-

tality within our ranks is condemned and

will be rooted out, said Lamoer.
