I love spending time with family and friends and I love to workout. Also, working in bars and clubs with a hectic schedule like mine, I also love to take naps and sleeping. I also teach gymnastics and tumbling, which many people do not know about me. I love to stay in shape and look good.

How did you get started DJing? How did you get started DJing?

About 10 years ago, I was dating someone who had a major love for music like I did. So, on our one year anniversary, we decided to put our money together to get mixing equipment to start DJing. We both had a lot of DJ friends, such as DJ JD Arnold and DJ Michael Tank, and I took note and picked up many valuable pointers from both of them. At the time, I was bartending, which helped open the door for opportunities to promote and network, and it went and grew from there.

What are some of your notable moments of What are some of your notable moments of your career?your career?

When I fi rst started DJing, I wrote out some goals as an outline of things I wanted to accomplish. The fi rst was to get a paying gig, which I got at the Guava Lamp in 2003. The next goal was to get a residency at Richs, which I got in 2006-2007. The next big deal for me was getting the residency at F Bar, roughly a year and a half ago. Last but not least, it was a huge moment for me getting a residency at South Beach just two months ago!

What are some hilarious moments of your career? What are some hilarious moments of your career?

There have been a few times that while mixing, I would intend on playing a particular track and it

Hi Guys and Gals,

Here in San Antonio there used to be a chain of cafeterias called Wyatts. They are no longer located here, but my family

remembers them fondly. One of my sons especially loved to go there, so he could select the side dish we are making today. He would get this side just about every time we would go, if they had it on the menu that day, and they usually did. Now those of you who think you do not or think you would not like eggplant, please keep an open mind. This looks and tastes like bread stuffi ng when baked. It is not a hard dish to make; you just need to remember to think ahead so the eggplant can be soaked. The soaking in salt water helps to remove any bitterness the plant may have, especially in the larger plants. My son so loved this dish, on one visit I asked the head chef if he would share it with me. Much to my surprise and delight, he did. He asked for my address, and in a few days I received a hand written recipe from him. Unfortunately, this was several years ago and I have forgotten this man’s name. But wherever he is, I hope he knows he made my son very happy. Wyatts did put out some recipe cards some time later and this was

one of their choices. I do not know why they chose to leave San Antonio, but I believe they still have some places in Houston and maybe Dallas, too. If you run across one, stop in and give them a try. You can fi nd several of their recipes online.

Baked Eggplant “A Wyatt Cafeteria Favorite”

1 lb eggplant, peeled½ lb. dried bread crumbs½ cup canned evaporated milk¼ cup whole milk¼ cup butter, melted¼ cup onions, fi nely chopped¼ cup green peppers, fi nely chopped¼ cup celery fi nely chopped2 eggs, slightly beaten1 tablespoon pimiento, chopped1/2 teaspoons salt½ teaspoon pepper¼ teaspoon sage1/8 teaspoon MSG½ cups (4 oz) cheddar cheese, grated

Baked Eggplant, A Love Story...

June 22, 2012TWITPg.

Cut peeled eggplant into 1 inch cubes and soak in salt water in refrigerator overnight (or minimum of 6 hours). Drain eggplant, rinse with plain water and drain again then place in pan. Cover with water and simmer until tender. Soak bread crumbs in milk. .Sauté onions, green peppers and celery in melted butter for about 15 minutes, or until tender.

Drain eggplant and combine with bread crumbs, and sautéed vegetables. Add eggs, pimiento and seasonings, blend thoroughly. Place in a greased baking dish and bake at 350 degrees for 45 minutes. Top with grated cheese and return to oven until cheese melts. Yield: 6 servings.

Hints:Hints:

1. MSG: There is great controversy in the use of MSG or Seasoning Salt. MSG in itself has no taste, it is instead a fl avor enhancer it also stimulates the appetite. You can just leave it out or use a dash of sugar.

2. Soaking the eggplant in salted water helps to draw out the bitterness that sometimes occurs.

3. Bread crumbs, make your crumbs from slices of day old bread, the very fi ne crumbs you can buy

in a can these days does not have the substance for this dish.

We like to serve this dish with grilled chicken or maybe one of those rotisserie ones from your local market. However you decide to serve it, I really hope you enjoy it and remember to work smart, play hard and take time out for a cookie!

Majestic Mexico has proven itself a pioneering country in gay civil rights.

It’s capital, Mexico City, was the fi rst district in Latin America to legalize same-sex marriage. Its state of Quinta Roo is about to legalize same-sex marriage, too – and it’s throwing a fi esta to celebrate! It’s Caribbean Heat party – being billed as the last gay beach bash of the summer – is being held this Labor Day in Riviera Maya; a spot renowned throughout the world for its turquoise water, beautiful white sandy beaches, rugged cliffs, and ancient Mayan ruins.

“Caribbean Heat draws inspiration from the spectacular festivals of Europe,” explains event founder O l i v e r S t e v a n o v i c . “In addition to partying the days and nights away, gay men can relax, soak in the sun, and tour ancient archeological sites including the nearby Chichen Itza, one of the Seven Wonders of the World.”

The celebration will feature over thirteen dance parties including the Ying and Yang Pool Parties, a Speedo event, and a Manhunt-sponsored extravaganza. All parties will take place at the luxurious, all-inclusive, Adonis

The Caribbean Heat celebrations will launch with the Yang pool party, a white attire event meant to honor purity and innocence. The following evening turns the tables with the black Ying event that celebrates all that is dark and sinister.

Additional festivities include pool parties, beach bashes, and even a Manhunt-themed Party.

“There will be live acts and shows,go-go dancers, and an amazing last night´s fi reworks display,” adds Stevanovic. “The entire week will be an unforgettable experience that is sure to end summer 2012 with a bang.”

Unless you’ve been locked in a bunker preparing for the zombie apocalypse, you probably know the story by now. On June 28,

2009, a group of policemen working with agents from the Texas Alcohol Beverage Commission raided the newly opened gay nightclub Rainbow Lounge in Fort Worth. To witnesses, it was an aggressive display of hostility and humiliation, an event made even worse by falling on the 40th anniversary of the legendary Stonewall riots. By the end of the night, multiple people were detained, six people were arrested, and one person was sent to the hospital with a fractured skull and bleeding on the brain. If those in power had their way, the whole event may have been swept under the rug. Too bad for them, a grassroots group of courageous citizens banded together in a public outcry which would become big news across the country. The controversial uprising led to an internal investigation, sparked a national debate on equality, and culminated in many policy changes for the city of Fort Worth.

By Robert Stahl

But what you might not know are the details of that struggle. Behind the scenes, the effort was a rollercoaster ride full of confl icts and setbacks. From the remarks made by offi cers alleging

sexual misconduct by the patrons, to the police chief who seemed to condone physical violence against gays, and a city council who clearly didn’t want to deal with the issue, it often seemed the protesters were building a house of cards that threatened to collapse at any given moment. But they would not be silenced. By pooling their efforts, the group demonstrated high levels of organizational skills, courage, and copious amounts of chutzpah. Robert L. Camina’s new documentary Raid of the Rainbow Lounge presents their story.

The North Texas fi lmmaker started covering the story the day after it unfolded. “For me to have started any sooner, I would have had to have been there the night of the raid,” jokes Camina. Originally, the director just wanted to make a

short piece about the raid, a quick highlight of the injustice that had occurred. But as the tale unraveled, he began to see another purpose. “The story had gotten so dark, I didn’t want the fi lm to be a negative piece. I wanted it to be something that delivered a positive message, something that educated people, inspired them to get involved in their community.”

It’s on its way. The fi lm is already generating praise after two sold-out local showings, winning it the “Audience Choice Award” at QCinema and the award for “Outstanding Documentary” from the online magazine QBliss. Most recently, it won BEST LGBT Film at the 32nd annual Breckenridge Festival of Film in Breckenridge, Colorado.

More importantly, politicians and lawmakers are catching on. Camina has been asked to screen the fi lm to the offi ce of the U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Texas as part of their fi rst-ever LGBT Pride Month Diversity Program. He has also been asked for screenings from the White House, the Department of justice, and many schools across the country.

“I’m happy that Raid is being used in training,” Camina says. “We’re re at the beginning of what I think is a really good process in educating people about the concerns in our community. If we study what happened in Fort Worth and understand why it matters, we can learn how to stop these types of things from happening again.”

Camina hopes TWIT readers will get out and see Raid of the Rainbow Lounge. “It’s important for people to know that that this type of violence and discrimination still happens in our lifetimes. The fi lm will shock you, it might even make you mad, but it shows that change does come. I think it’s sad that some people in the community have never heard of what happened at the Lounge that night. I mean, it’s not making the headlines¬ anymore–it’s not shiny and sparkly now but its’ part of our LGBT history. We need to know our history.”

Camina lived with the events for almost three years while he was fi nishing the fi lm, and he admits that he was changed by them on a personal level. “I’ve learned how important our voices are. I have

learned how our individual voices can be heard, but when we come together, we form a collective voice. Its’ not a cliché; it’s a reality. This experience has inspired me to get more involved.”

If you want to get involved, don’t miss the encore screening of Raid on the Rainbow Lounge on June 28 at Magnolia Theater. This special event marks the three-year anniversary of the raid. After the fi lm, Camina will be present for a panel discussion along with other major players from the controversy, including Fort Worth Police Chief Jeffrey Halstead. If you’d like to see the movie and its s not screening in your area, call your local fi lm festival and tell them you want to see it. For more information and updates on upcoming screenings, go to RaidOfTheRainbowLounge.com, where you can sign up for a newsletter.

Raid of Rainbow Lounge is more than just a documentary about a botched raid. It’s also a sobering reminder of how human rights can be squashed by those who are in power. More than that, it’s a poignant refl ection on the human spirit, reminding us how a small group of people, with enough drive and determination, can infl uence, and even change, the status quo. It’s also a call to arms for the next generation, for, without knowledge of what’s transpired in our past, aren’t we doomed to repeat it?

Self Improvement

H ave you ever been to a fancy party that was “by invitation only?” You knew others couldn’t get in, you had

the coveted invitation. Straight out of a sitcom, I was an old friend of a Hollywood writer, and when she got married back in our home town the wedding was, of course, by invitation only. There were lots of celebrities there and it was hilarious because the highway patrol (honest) checked the invitations to make sure there were no wedding crashers, and people perched on hills with binoculars to see the festivities.

However in our every-day world everything comes by invitation, we are literally inviting what we think about into our lives. Now this is great if you focus, during your day, on all your blessings, all the great things you are creating and doing and having. But most of us have been guilty of worrying, stressing, looking into the future and painting it a big challenge. Think about it, if you’ve ever had a really bad day that started out OK but then you just kept rehashing the bad experience and somehow the day got worse and worse.

So the real question here is what are you inviting into your life right now that’s coming

in by invitation only? You probably know without even thinking about it, since our emotions tell us how we’re feeling and doing. If we’re feeling anxious, stressed, annoyed and frustrated, guess what we’ve been inviting in - probably the thoughts of anger, retribution, or regret. Guaranteed you weren’t thinking about a trip to Hawaii or about how much you loved your last vacation.

What you’re focusing on, texting, telling friends on Facebook, you are bringing into your life again. Imagine standing up at work and making an announcement with a megaphone, yelling for all your challenges, troubles, debts, mean spirited bosses and assorted other diffi culties to please come directly to you, as soon as possible. That’s the power of the unintentional invitation.

How do we block the negative invitations and start inviting in some really great ideas? Well obviously if this process works for negative thoughts (and it does) just think how powerful it would be to invite in what you want more of in your life. Create an intention of what you’d like, imagine just how great it would feel and keep allowing what you want to dominate your thoughts. Of course we get sidetracked, but just pay attention to what you’re feeling, and adjust as you realize you’re feeling less than joyous, happy or productive.

Have fun inviting in what you want, and be grateful today for what you already have. We’re all blessed, no matter what might be happening in our lives. Appreciate what you have; it’s a great way to stay focused on inviting in more of the same!

This particular way of thinking is a practiced, learned approach to creating your day, but the results can be amazing. Will things change overnight? Not necessarily, since it usually takes time to learn a new language, a new sport, or anything that includes effort. Can it transform your life? Absolutely! Be sure and blog me your success stories!

What do you call a program that has been running almost uninterrupted for 23 years, been

hosted by at least 5 different clubs, and raised over half a million dollars in food? An institution. What do you call the person behind this movement? Dedicated. That is the most appropriate word for Rhonda Mae Cox, creator of “The Wall of Food” benefi t shows. These shows have been running almost continuously at least twice a month, often weekly, resulting in 379 shows since just 2004 and around 600 since 1989.

It all started back in the late 1980’s when the AIDS epidemic fi rst really hit the Dallas/ Ft. Worth area. “We were burying a friend every week sometimes two or three a week.” That’s when Rhonda Mae decided to get involved. “We did benefi t shows at the Offi ce Lounge and Breakroom.” These shows benefi ted the AIDS Outreach Center, then called the Community Outreach Center. At that time they were taking cash donations in to the organization. One week after having previously taken in $3,000.00 in cash donations, Rhonda Mae was shocked to fi nd that they didn’t have any more food than they had

By Clayton Mead

previously. The director explained, “When I brought them $3,000.00, they backed $3,000.00 out of the food budget. I was livid. This money was supposed to go to buy extra food.”

After a lunch with her close friend Yogi, they had an epiphany. “Instead of taking them the money, take the money and buy food. Then we took the food to the bar so people could see what their donations turned into. We built the Wall of Food. We’d often go to Sam’s and it would take two pickup loads to bring the food home.” Since 1989, Rhonda and her guest performers have raised $575,000 worth of food and “I’ve handled almost every case of it,” Rhonda Mae chuckles.

When asked why she decided to start this she responds, “We were losing so many friends. Once you were diagnosed with HIV, in a few short months, you were dead. They were sick so they couldn’t work, so they couldn’t feed themselves. If we can keep them fed we can

keep them living a bit longer.” But it hasn’t always been easy. “You have to be really dedicated because it can get frustrating. People can burn out quickly.”

What is she most proud of from the past 23 years? “So many entertainers start with the Wall of Food shows and were terrible, to tell the truth! My shows are open to everyone, though. And they got better! Now, they’ve

gone on to bigger and better things! The community has so many wonderful people. All they needed was the encouragement and opportunity.”

Her recipe for long standing success? “I only book 5 girls a night with three numbers each. It makes for a show of an hour and a half to two hours and every show is different.”

Editor’s Note: With the dedication of Rhonda Mae Cox and her fellow volunteers, the generosity of a heartfelt community, and a long standing history of success, we are confi dent that The Wall of Food will continue to fl ourish and is a great model for other cities to follow. We congratulate Rhonda Mae Cox and her incredible team. All hail the volunteers!

Rhonda Mae Cox hosts her benefi t shows on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of every month at Changes in Ft. Worth. Changes is located at 2637 East Lancaster Ave, Ft Worth, TX 76103 or call them at 817-413-2332.

Music

There are so many things that can be said for the 1st major release from Blues /Rock artist Beverley

McClellan. There are things about the disc that are simply amazing, yet Beverly came to the attention of American music by way of the NBC hit show The Voice. After her season she hooked up with producer David Z (friend and co-producer of the “Purple One” known as Prince) who put his years of experience behind Beverly to give her a polished sounding

cd, but not too glossy that it would take away from her edge.

Now Ms. Beverly looks wild and crazy with her tattoos and her shaved head. But, she is so friendly and amazingly sharp witted. Now, Beverly knows what she’s doing. She has been on her grind showcasing her tunes around Florida since early 2000 and this is her fi fth album to be released.

The music, although mostly her original tunes, are so unique they touch you and move you. She lives her songs and puts her life and world around her into her songs.

Beverly has drawn comparisons to Janis Joplin and Etta James but those are unfair as they are both unique ladies in their own rite. Beverly has her own thang going on and you sense that and feel it on this cd, now what you get on record is just as real as it is live. Beverly is as powerful with or without all the polished up tweaked pro tools tricks. If I had a chance I would have arranged the set list a bit different, maybe start the cd off with the track “I Can’t Hide Me”, which is a great statement song and

a great party song. I like a cd to start off with a good kick to get the party going. There are many other great goodies to feed the blues monster inside you.

Beverly is what the music world needs now: a ballsy bad ass to sit back and have a beer to. Her voice is amazing and her songwriting true and real. It’s the same way she lives. This is not the last you will hear from America’s new blue-eyed soul sista.

Check Beverly out on tour this summer with Steve Via…………

Rating: B (I’ll play back twice, a great road trip cd )

Big Daddy’s Heyyyy Tracks (the songs that make you say “heyyy”)

# 6 Well Wondered: A Great Party Starter, this is what blues is about.

# 7 Love Will Find A Way: Almost feels country. It’s a great sing-a-long, clap-a-long song.

# 1 I See Love: It makes the cd start off with promise (this one makes me pat the side of my leg).

Beverly is on tour this summer with Steve Vai. For more info go to: www.beverlymclellan.com.

June 25 George MichaelJune 26 Derek JeterJune 27 Khloe Kardashian

Aries March 20 April 19

You turn thought into action and go for the romantic gold at every opportunity. Past lovers may consider you selfi sh or insatiable, but you think that’s their problem, and you’re determined to prove anybody wrong who’s not hip to your game plan. You’re not selfi sh; you merely know what you want and what a partner has to do in order to make a union fully functional. Unfortunately, a partnership includes two people and everybody else ranks second. Maybe it is time to grow up?

Taurus April 20 May 20

Because your personal motto is “the sky’s the limit” in matters of love, an emotionally secure, no baggage type of partner suits you best. You’re creative and happy go lucky and understand the importance of maturity. Not a footloose, fl y by night partner, you take every affair seriously and consider it an investment. You have a natural ability to distinguish between which emotional direction is best for you, and which is not.

Gemini May 21 June 20

You enjoy the excitement that relationships deliver, never having strict or rigid itineraries, just enjoyable exploration. Open minded but not always realistic, you work well with lovers who are not static or too old fashioned, preferring spontaneous unplanned quality time, and letting your relationship world spin about at its own merry pace. But once boredom settles in, you’re out the door! A roll with the punches partner complements your inner child escapism best.

Cancer June 21 July 22

Even though your ego is no bigger than others, you are quick to grow defensive or overprotective of what you feel is right and just. You have no patience for lazy sorts who seem to wallow or beg to be rescued. Conservative by nature, you have problems letting down your barriers and opening up. The weird thing is, all you yearn for is intimacy, bare bone honesty, and acceptance.

Leo July 23 August 22

Because your mind is always eager for new experiences, you rarely spend time crying about what happened in the past or over old spilled milk issues. You are best suited for lovers who don’t have a lot of old emotional baggage, drag their feet, or don’t appreciate your independence and joy for life. However, they too must be as effervescent and happy about the future as you! Yes, indeed, tomorrow is another day.

Virgo August 23 September 22

As talkative and sociable as you are, you have a real block about expressing your true feelings. You keep to your own counsel but aren’t overly shy, it just takes a great while for people to earn your trust. You never feel alone. Even when you’re not involved in a relationship, you maintain a busy social agenda. Try treating others as you’d like to be treated in return. You work best when coupled.

Libra September 23 October 22

You express your likes and dislikes easily (and often), which endears you to many. Even though you are overfl owing with romantic ideas and fantasies, you never hurry love. You take your time getting to know a partner, savoring every moment. You’re uneasy with clinging types, preferring passion and imagination over schedule and scenario. Affection, tenderness, and devotion are the only drugs you need, and you’ll do anything for your daily fi x!

Scorpio October 23 November 21

You hate presumption and when lovers second guess you. For you, lucidity and honesty are more important than passion or expectation. Your noble personality is best suited for partners who are open minded and provide you plenty of breathing space. You have very little patience for subtleties or vapid nuances, because you’re strongly opinionated and think you know best. Find a lover who will let you roam from square one to square three whenever, and if, you want.

Sagittarius November 22 December 21

If you really want a relationship to grow, it’s a good idea to explore the art of listening.

You’re not antagonistic or overly defensive, but your stubborn likes and dislikes have a tendency to irritate partners because you always feel that you must have the fi nal word. You’re not easily duped, because you’re suspicious by nature. Swallow your self defensive pride, and make time to examine your lover’s needs.

Capricorn December 22 January 19

You’re uncomfortable with lovers who are fi nancially unfocused or childish, preferring wise and responsible partners rather than reckless ones. Once committed, you are a generous and kind partner who enjoys life’s simple pleasures- even though you enjoy a little extravagance every now and then! You are best suited with reliable, conservative, trustworthy types who are ambitious and willing to commit for the long run.

Aquarius January 20 February 18

You may be particularly drawn to individuals who are well known or outstanding in their profession because excellence, to you, equates to happiness. Not one for co-dependency, you enjoy those who tend to their own business and are able to take care of themselves. You appreciate a lover who doesn’t discuss your personal life with others; in fact, you prefer carrying on the affair in secret!

Pisces February 19 March 20Your adventurous and articulate personality knows how to put into words the usually vague but powerful feelings of love. Loyalty and companionship are more important to you than passion. Because of your vibrant nature, you should choose a more subdued and curious partner, one who will mature and grow with you. Give yourself plenty of breathing space.
