Christmas Eve Candlelight December 24, 2019

Christmas Eve is a night where the ordinary is conse-

crated and set apart to be the holy vessels of God’s

coming. The night sky, a stable and a family are set

apart for divine purposes. How does God visit us on

this holy night and how do we continue to serve and

worship the Christ child?

Don’t Forget the

Bethany Breadbasket! Bethany Lutheran has proudly been serving the community through its donations to United Community Ministries for many years. We have started our third year of recording.

Please see the gray line for this year’s comparison.

Thanksgiving Food Drive

With November's Thanksgiving Food Drive, we donated 267 pounds, which is the most food Bethany has ever collected in one month for the past 25 months!! In just the first month of

this year, we've achieved 24% of year 1 and 23% of year 2!

“Once in Royal David’s City”

Lexi Bodendorf: 1. Once in royal David’s city Stood a lowly cattle shed Where a mother laid her baby In a manger for his bed; Mary was that mother mild, Jesus Christ her little child.

Allelu Singers: 2. He came down to earth from heaven Who is God and Lord of all, And his shelter was a stable, And his cradle was a stall; With the poor, and mean, and lowly, Lived on earth our Savior holy.

Allelu Singers & Bethany Singers Women: 3. And through all his wondrous childhood

He would honor and obey, Love, and watch the lowly maiden, In whose gentle arms he lay; Christian children all must be Mild, obedient, good as he.

Bethany Singers Men: 4. For he is our childhood’s pattern, Day by day like us he grew, He was little, weak and helpless, Tears and smiles like us he knew; And he feeleth for our sadness, And he shareth in our gladness.

Bethany Singers: 5. And our eyes at last shall see him, Through his own redeeming love, For that child so dear and gentle Is our Lord in heaven above; And he leads his children on To the place where he is gone.

All: 6. Not in that poor lowly stable, With the oxen standing by, We shall see him but in heaven, Set at God’s right hand on high; Where like stars his children crowned All in white shall wait around.

Thanksgiving for Light - Christmas Eve

L Eternal God,

who made this most holy night to shine with the brightness of your one true light:

bring us, who have known the revelation of that light on earth, to see the radiance of your

heavenly glory; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

C Amen.

Anthem (Bethany Singers) “I Offer My Heart” Miller

Introit Ps. 2:1–2, 4–6; antiphon: Liturgical Text

L When all was still, and it was midnight,

your almighty Word, O Lord, descended from the royal throne.

C Why do the nations rage

and the peoples plot in vain?

L The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together,

against the LORD and against his anointed.

C He who sits in the heavens laughs;

the Lord holds them in derision.

L Then he will speak to them in his wrath,

and terrify them in his fury, saying,

C “As for me, I have set my King

on Zion, my holy hill.”

Glory be to the Father and to the Son

and to the Holy Spirit;

as it was in the beginning,

is now, and will be forever. Amen.

L When all was still, and it was midnight,

your almighty Word, O Lord, descended from the royal throne.

Readings Old Testament Reading Isaiah 9:2–7 R The Old Testament Reading is from Isaiah, the ninth chapter.

The people who walked in darkness

have seen a great light;

those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness,

on them has light shined.

You have multiplied the nation;

you have increased its joy;

they rejoice before you

as with joy at the harvest,

as they are glad when they divide the spoil.

For the yoke of his burden,

and the staff for his shoulder,

the rod of his oppressor,

you have broken as on the day of Midian.

For every boot of the tramping warrior in battle tumult

and every garment rolled in blood

will be burned as fuel for the fire.

For to us a child is born,

to us a son is given;

and the government shall be upon his shoulder,

and his name shall be called

Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,

Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

Of the increase of his government and of peace

there will be no end,

on the throne of David and over his kingdom,

to establish it and to uphold it

with justice and with righteousness

from this time forth and forevermore.

The zeal of the LORD of hosts will do this.

R This is the Word of the Lord.

C Thanks be to God.

Anthem (Praise Ringers) “Away in a Manger” arr. Raney

Epistle Reading Titus 2:11-14

R A reading from Titus, chapter 2.

For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people, training us to renounce

ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the

present age, waiting for our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and

Savior Jesus Christ, who gave himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to purify for

himself a people for his own possession who are zealous for good works.

R This is the Word of the Lord.

C Thanks be to God.

Stand

Holy Gospel Luke 2:1–14

P The Holy Gospel, according to Luke, the second chapter.

In those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be registered.

This was the first registration when Quirinius was governor of Syria. And all went to be

registered, each to his own town. And Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the town of

Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the

house and lineage of David, to be registered with Mary, his betrothed, who was with child. And

while they were there, the time came for her to give birth. And she gave birth to her firstborn

son and wrapped him in swaddling cloths and laid him in a manger, because there was no place

for them in the inn.

And in the same region there were shepherds out in the field, keeping watch over their flock

by night. And an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around

them, and they were filled with fear. And the angel said to them, “Fear not, for behold, I bring

you good news of a great joy that will be for all the people. For unto you is born this day in the

city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. And this will be a sign for you: you will find a

baby wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger.” And suddenly there was with the

angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying,

“Glory to God in the highest,

and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased!”

P This is the Gospel of the Lord.

C Praise to You, O Christ.

P In many and various ways, God spoke to His people of old by the prophets.

C But now in these last days, He has spoken to us by His Son.

Offering (Lindsay Hemphill, Flute) “Mary, Did You Know?” arr. Raney

Offertory “O Holy Night” Adolphe Adam

Verse 1

O holy night! The stars are brightly shining.

It is the night of the dear Savior's birth.

Long lay the world in sin and error pining,

'til He appeared and the soul felt its worth.

A thrill of hope the weary soul rejoices,

for yonder breaks a new and glorious morn!

Prayer Kneel/Stand

Litany LSB 249

The congregation’s response may begin just as the leader’s petition ends so that the word

“Lord” is sung simultaneously by both leader and congregation.

L For the peace from above and for our salvation, let us pray to the Lord:

C Lord, have mercy.

L For the peace of the whole world, for the well-being of the Church of God, and for the

unity of all, let us pray to the Lord:

(refrain 1)

Fall on your knees! Oh, hear the angel voices!

O night divine! O night when Christ was born!

O night! O holy night, O night divine!

(refrain 2)

Christ is the Lord! Oh, praise His name forever!

His power and glory evermore proclaim!

His power and glory evermore proclaim!

Verse 2

Truly He taught us to love one another;

His law is love and His gospel is peace.

Chains shall He break, for the slave is our brother,

and in His name all oppression shall cease.

Sweet hymns of joy in grateful chorus raise we!

Let all within us praise His holy name!

Collect For Peace

L O God, from whom come all holy desires, all good counsels, and all just works, give to us,

Your servants, that peace which the world cannot give, that our hearts may be set to obey

Your commandments and also that we, being defended from the fear of our enemies, may

live in peace and quietness; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns

with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

Lord's Prayer LSB 251

L Taught by our Lord and trusting His promises, we are bold to pray:

C Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will

be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our

trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into

temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the

glory forever and ever. Amen.

Christmas Eve Collect

P O God,

You make this most holy night to shine

with the brightness of the true Light.

Grant that as we have known the mysteries of that Light on earth

we may also come to the fullness of His joys in heaven;

through the same Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord,

who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit.

one God, now and forever.

C Amen.

Carol “Joy to the World” arr. Moklebust

(Please stand to face the Processional Cross.) (Praise Ringers, Brass, Organ, Congregation)

1. Joy to the world, the Lord is come!

Let earth receive her King;

Let every heart prepare Him room,

And Heaven and nature sing,

And Heaven and nature sing,

And Heaven, and Heaven, and nature sing.

2. Joy to the earth, the Savior reigns!

Let men their songs employ;

While fields and floods, rocks, hills and plains

Repeat the sounding joy,

Repeat the sounding joy,

Repeat, repeat, the sounding joy.

3. No more let sins and sorrows grow,

Nor thorns infest the ground;

He comes to make His blessings flow

Far as the curse is found,

Far as the curse is found,

Far as, far as, the curse is found.

(Instrumental interlude between verses)

4. He rules the world with truth and grace,

And makes the nations prove

The glories of His righteousness,

And wonders of His love,

And wonders of His love,

And wonders, wonders, of His love.
