River Ridge High School Students Arielle Pfaff & Austin GableGet a Taste of German Work Life at Mercedes Benz Plant

Since 2007 the IGS Kandel hasbeen partnering with River RidgeHigh School in Pasco County, Florida. For the first time, two American ex-change students had the opportunityto get to know German work life dur-ing their two-week internship at theMercedes Benz plant in Woerth, Ger-many. According to county commis-sioner (in Germany) Fritz Brechteland the school’s principal WolfgangPoggel, “The long years of partnershipare now bearing fruit even beyondschool life.”

Wearing a blue overall with theMercedes star on it, 17-year old AriellePfaff from New Port Richey, Florida, exudes confidence and vigor. NicoleGraf, Maximilian Kremer and StefanSchulze, her supervisors in the trainingworkshop, are impressed with herfriendly and open manner.” It’s anhonor for us,” they say. Shortly before, the first exchange student from RiverRidge High School, Austin Gable, hadchecked out the world’s largest truckplant. “It was Uwe Busch, a Daimler

employee, whomade all of this pos-sible,” Jens Przy-gode tells us. AnEnglish teacher atIGS Kandel, he is incharge of coordinat-ing the school part-nership togetherwith his colleague,Dr. Angelika Meyle. As a participant ofthe student ex-change program,Busch’s son Marvinstayedwith theGables in Marchand very much en-joyed Americanhospitality. Now hisfamily is returningthe favor by letting Austin stay withthem.

The entire German delegationvisiting “their Arielle” at her workstation was particularly grateful toAndrea Newbolds, a German teacher

at River Ridge High School. Poggeland Przygode introduced her to theHead of Vocational and AdvancedTraining, Daniel Brunner, referring toher as “the engine of our partnership.”Newbold spent the first few years ofher life in Karlsruhe.

Pfaff is aware of her German her-itage, but has not tried to track downher roots as of yet. She is happy to bestaying with her host parents, espe-cially enjoying their tasty, healthycooking. She spent the first week withSelina Worst in Kandel, then went to

River Ridge High School students Austin Gable and Arielle Pfaff in Germany

stay with Lara Hess in Berg, sinceboth students had stayed with herfamily over the course of the exchangeprogram. Apart from her work at theplant, Arielle was allowed to create asign from a body sheet as well as paintand coat it. “Our dog, a Corgi, diedduring my internship. This souvenirfrom Germany is meant to comfortmy mother.”

The exchange program is indeedbearing fruit: Pfaff would like to studyin Germany and learn a technicaltrade. Her parents arrived fromFlorida to look at the universities inWuerzburg and Mannheim.

The exchange program “is a greatopportunity for the personal develop-ment of the students as well as for thedevelopment of both districts,” saysBrechtel.

Three years ago, the new state-of-the-art preschool academy, ExcelCreative Learning Academy (ECLA),opened its doors in the Medical ArtsBuilding on the Medical Center ofTrinity campus on State Road 54, of-fering full preschool programs for ba-bies from six weeks old up tochildren through age four, and someprograms for elementary age stu-dents. ECLA also is a Voluntary Pre-Kindergarten (VPK) providerstarting this 2015-2016 school year.Excel Creative Learning Academyaims to provide a safe and interactivelearning environment that will en-gage, enrich and empower the livesof their students. While I visited thecampus I noticed students learnthrough hands-on projects in theirinteractive, enriching classrooms.Teachers use state-approved CreativeCurriculum and SMART Board tech-nology to help each child’s educationand character development.

Director Erika Mahoney has abackground that includes early child-

hood education and she is a Floridastate licensed teacher for gradeskindergarten through sixth grade.Erika came on board at ECLA beforethe facility opened three years ago, soshe truly has been able to see her orig-inal vision of ECLA to engage, enrichand empower come to life. The staff isselected for educational background, experience and training, and all arebackground checked.

Excel Creative Learning Academyaccepts babies as young as six weeksbut with only eight children in theclass with two teachers there often is awaiting list for these coveted spots.Once children are in their toddleryears, the staff works with parents asthey see children are ready to move upto a class that is developmentally ap-propriate.

The two-year-olds are split intotwo classrooms depending on ageand developmental ability. ECLA Di-rector Erika Mahoney explains, “Overthe last three years we have foundthat there is such a developmentaldifference between a 24-month-oldand a 36-month-old, that we decidedto separate them so that we could

focus on a stronger curriculum withour older two-year-olds. This hasworked wonderfully!” The youngertwo-year-old classroom is called the“Investigators” classroom and hasone teacher for every six children, and the older two-year-old classroomis the “Adventurers” with one teacherfor every nine children.

Excel Creative Learning Academy is Now a VPK Provider!

The three-year-old “Voyagers”class has two teachers with a maximumof 20 students. Students in theseclasses, as well as the four-year-oldclass, have the option to attend fivedays a week, three days (Monday,Wednesday and Friday), or two days(Thursday and Friday). In ECLA’sfour-year-old class called “Innovators”the students are often found learningin small group rotations, taking virtualfield trips on the class SMART Boardwhich engages visual, auditory andkinesthetic learners, and interactingwith circle time activities. Erika ex-plains, “There’s a focus on develop-mentally appropriate early literacy andmath skills in our four-year-old class.

Our job is to get them ready forkindergarten.”

Excel Creative Learning Academybelieves developing and encouragingpartnerships with families is an essen-tial part of their success, and they arecommitted to children’s safety. Finger-print technology is utilized to allowentry into the children’s area of the fa-cility – an additional precaution on topof the buzz-in front entrance. Erikaand the assistant director have a digitalfeed of the halls and classrooms sothey can video monitor the facility.Even students with peanut allergiescan feel safe at ECLA, since it is 100%peanut-free. Daily notes go homewith children, which include sleep

habits, what they ate, and more.Three and four-year-olds take homelearning packets that help keep parentsaware of what sight words the childrenare working on, and it includes a littleactivity to be completed.

Room to Play OutsideAlthough ECLA’s 7,000-square-

foot facility is tucked away in theMedical Arts Building on the Med-ical Center of Trinity campus, theydo still have a beautiful outside playarea. One group of children uses theplayground at a time. Even theyounger children get outside timethrough stroller walks starting at sixmonths old.

Parent Sue Beane sums it upbeautifully, “We could not have pickeda better preschool experience for ourson. The staff is caring, knowledge-able, and enthusiastic. Andrew wasmore than ready for kindergartenthanks to the loving staff at Excel Cre-ative Learning Academy.”

If you have ever tried Maine lob-ster, prepared the traditional NewEngland way, then you know thesweet, succulent beauty that a coldwa-ter lobster offers when served boiled, steamed, on a roll or simmered downin a rich creamy sauce. Maine lobsterserved with drawn butter alone is asimple, yet complex delicacy that awak-ens the taste buds and pleases even thepickiest of seafood critics. If you’recraving Maine lobster, it’s coming! The Got Lobstah? food truck will behitting the roadways in the Tampa BayArea next month with a focus in theTrinity Area.

Got Lobstah? is the brainchild oflocal couple Karen and Gary Amund-son. Gary fell in love with Maine lob-ster while he was falling in love withKaren during their first visit to meetKaren’s family in Maine. “I am origi-nally from North Dakota, so when Ifirst visited Maine to meet Karen’sfamily, I had never truly experiencedcoldwater lobster,” says Gary. “Her fa-ther took me with him to the lobsterpound, a place where guys are unload-ing boats and trucks of lobster right

into tanks for you to pick up fresh. Herdad asked me how many lobster Iwanted and I didn’t quite understand,so I asked him, ‘How many is every-one else having?’ He answered thatthey were each having three, so I or-dered the same. We went home andcooked them up served with beer andsmall rolls and I haven’t found anothertype of food that is comparable.”

That was over twenty-two yearsago and since that first bite of deliciousMaine lobster, Gary has been workingon perfecting his own Maine lobsterrecipes. Karen says, “My heart has al-ways been in Maine, so the idea tostart a food truck with Maine lobstermade complete sense to me.” Karengrew up in New Jersey and has visitedMaine every year with her family forvacations since she was two years old.“I kind of always knew I would workin the hospitality industry again. Istarted working in restaurants when Iwas 15 and always enjoyed the busi-ness. For the last 25 years, I haveworked with people, but it hasn’t beenserving people delicious food, so I amvery excited to combine my love offeeding people with my love for Maineinto a new business,” says Karen. “Got

Lobstah? uses my family’s recipes andothers that Gary and I have discoveredthroughout our marriage. Our motto:Stick to what you like and know - sim-ple and delicious Maine style seafood!”

Gary says, “When I first learnedhow to cook lobster, people ravedabout the texture, taste and simplegoodness. I told them all, it was due tothe lobster being shipped downstraight from Maine, still alive thatmade them so great. We host about 25

friends or so to our house every yearfor a big lobster cookout and afterhearing over and over that we shouldbring this to the public, we decided tostart Got Lobstah?!”

As a Veteran, Gary has strong be-liefs in supporting American vendorsand he works exclusively with domesticvendors. All of the lobster servedthrough Got Lobstah? are coldwaterMaine lobster. Even the bread used forlobster rolls called Top Loaders are

For patients that areseeking rejuvenation medicine, I referthem to read Dr. Kerr’s book. Dr.Kerr has done a great job. It is a com-plete and informative book on rejuve-nation medicine.”

Dr. Kerr & The NRC is aGame Changer

Dr. Kerr, who was on his first ofmany television appearances, is incred-ibly excited about it all, because help-ing people to feel their best issomething he’s truly passionate about. For those of us who just don’t havethat pep in our step anymore, Dr. Kerrhas the answer.

One patient said, “If you areyoung and feel old, or old and feelyour age and think there is nothingyou can do about it – think again. It ismy pleasure to recommend that youcontact Dr. Kerr at National Rejuvena-

tion Centers and experience, as I did, what I consider a miracle transforma-tion in my health, appearance and sex-ual potency which amazingly wasachieved in only a few short months.”

Dr. Kerr explains on his blog,“Oftentimes when I meet new pa-tients or potential patients, their fasci-nation lies into bio-identical hormonereplacement and if it is right for them.I explained to them that if it is deemedthat they are deficient in certain hor-mones and they are replaced, they willfeel much better. When people feelbetter, they have the ability to be moreactive. To take advantage of this newenergy and to enhance the results ofoptimal hormone levels, I recommendexercise protocols specific to the goalsof the patient.”

National Rejuvenation Centersuses state-of-the-art techniques in bio-identical hormone replacement therapyto safely balance hormone levels of pa-tients over the age of 35 to that of ahealthy and athletic twenty-year-old,which is what makes all the difference.Combining nutrition and personalizedexercise plans with the hormone re-placement therapy, patients feel aworld of difference in just a matter ofweeks. The best part? Besides feelinglike you’re 20 again? Unlike many hor-mone replacement clinics, treatment atNRC is designed to be affordable.

One female patient said, “I havenever felt better. I have lost weightnaturally and kept it off. Most of all,my whole outlook on life and my

every day mood is great. No morehot flashes, no more mood swings. Ilove life again and have as much en-ergy as I did before menopause. I feelfabulous!”

Another patient had this to sayabout RejuveNation, “If you’re con-sidering hormone treatment com-bined with an exercise program, thisbook is straight forward and an in-formative read on the subjects. I’m ac-tually a patient of Dr. Kerr and havebeen for nearly three years. Dr. Kerr’syears of research, personal experiencesand knowledge have produced one ofthe world’s foremost experts on a sub-ject often confused and misunder-stood by many. If your location makesvisiting his National RejuvenationCenter in Florida impractical, thisbook is your next best option.”

Bella Pool Service – Veteran Owned & Detail Oriented! By Katie Thomas

Florida is the perfect place for adelightful backyard pool that canserve as your oasis on hot summerdays. Without proper care though,Florida pools also can serve as an oasisfor bacteria, algae, leaks and a host ofother problems. The easiest way toprevent the pains that come with hav-ing a pool couldn’t be more simple -hire a professional pool cleaning serv-ice that is reliable, honest and knowl-edgeable. Bella Pool Service, LLC isa company that is all of that andmore, and serves Pasco, Pinellas andHillsborough Counties with completepool services that include weeklymaintenance, pool equipment repairs, stain removal treatments, completepool clean up, deck power washing, deck staining and more for both com-mercial and residential pools.

Owned and operated by Normand Valerie Giunta, Bella Pool Servicehas been catering to residential andcommercial pool owners for eightyears. After moving to the area in1999, Norm and Valerie wanted abusiness that would allow Norm to behome on nights and most weekends.

Norm’s background hasover 15 yrs. in construc-tion. Norm gave his op-tions a lot of thought andbegan brainstorming whatservices he used as ahomeowner that could bebetter. In 2006 the familyhad a pool installed andbegan having problems.Norm was frustrated aftercalling around to receive aslew of different answers from poolcompanies that really just didn’t seemto help. He decided that he wouldopen the best pool service company inthe area. He received his CPO (Certi-fied Pool Operator) and Stain Special-ist certification and opened Bella PoolService with one truck and 35 cus-tomers. Bella Pool Service has nowgrown exponentially to serve threecounties with five trucks, which allowsBella Pool Service to accommodatemost people within 24 hours of theirphone call.

Bella Pool Service began as asmall company that offered weeklymaintenance to pool owners so theycould enjoy their pools rather thandeal with the hassle of constant up-

keep and while weekly maintenance isstill a mainstay service, Bella has ex-panded services to include pool sur-face stain removal, acid wash and deckcleaning and re-staining.

Norm says, “Florida pools canquickly get out of control due tomany factors. Usually most home-owners don’t see a problem with theirpool until it has become severe, whichis why having weekly maintenanceperformed by a professional is so im-portant.”

Norm takes his time to talk tocustomers and really understand thesource of the problem. He gets to thedeep end of the problem when itcomes to your pool and never justleaves you with superficial surface an-

swers. “I found out early on in this in-dustry that quite a few homeownerswere having problems finding a rep-utable pool company,” says Norm. “Ibelieve Bella has filled a void in poolmaintenance and repair. We grewfrom word of mouth because our cus-tomers found we exceeded their ex-pectations and were completely

Join Pasco Residents in the Upcoming “Out of the Darkness” Community Walk to Help

Prevent Suicide and Raise AwarenessHundreds of walks to help bring

awareness to Suicide Prevention arebeing held nationwide through De-cember 2015, including one righthere in Pasco County.

More than 200 people fromthroughout Pasco County are ex-pected to participate in the upcom-ing Out of the DarknessCommunity Walk on Saturday,November 7, 2015. The fundrais-ing walk supports the AmericanFoundation for Suicide Prevention(AFSP) by helping to support localand national suicide prevention andawareness programs to reach the goalto reduce the annual rate of suicideby 20 percent by 2025.

The Pasco County Out of theDarkness Walk is one of more than360 Out of the Darkness Commu-nity Walks being held this fall nation-wide. The walks are expected tounite more than 100,000 walkers na-

tionally and raise more than $15 mil-lion for suicide prevention efforts.

“Much more needs to be doneto prevent suicide. Yet, suicide andthe underlying mental disorders thatcan sometimes lead to suicide con-tinue to be surrounded by misinfor-mation and stigma,” said Marie Kelly, walk chair. “This walk is about re-ducing that stigma, raising awarenessand raising needed funds for researchand local prevention programs.”

The Pasco County Out of theDarkness Community Walk will beginat Jay B. Starkey Wilderness Park at10 a.m. and will end at that locationby approximately 12:30 p.m.

According to AFSP, close to700,000 people will make a suicideattempt requiring medical care andmore than 38,000 die by suicide inthe U.S. every year.

“Despite the troubling statistics,an important goal of the walk is to

stress that suicide canbe prevented. The walkis also a call to actionthat more must bedone to prevent sui-cide, nationally and incommunities across the country,”said Robert Gebbia, executive direc-tor for the foundation.

“We know that the best way toprevent suicide is through the earlyrecognition and treatment of themental disorders that can contributeto suicide. Unfortunately, stigmaabout disorders such as depression, bipolar illness, and alcohol andsubstance abuse, keeps people fromgetting the treatment they need. The Overnight is about eliminatingthat stigma.” He continued, “It’sabout bringing hope to those whohave been affected by suicide.”
