From the Acting Principal Trinity Catholic College Lismore the Lantern No. 12 Week Four Term Three Tuesday, 9th August, 2016 Dear Parents/Guardians, FEAST OF THE ASSUMPTION – FOUNDATION DAY Next Monday, 15th August, will see Catholics celebrating the special place that Mary, the mother of God, holds in their faith. So revered is Mary, that her assumption, body and soul to heaven at the end of her earthly life, expresses her singular participation in her Son’s resurrection and an anticipation of the resurrection of other Christians. Belief in Mary is one of the central tenants to our existence as Trinity Catholic College and we celebrate that belief by proclaiming this special Marian feast as our Foundation Day. What’s the link? Under the direction of Father Jeremiah Doyle, the Presentation Sisters were called to establish a Catholic parochial school in Lismore. It was called St Mary’s College and operated from 15th August 1886 until the formation of Trinity in 1985. In 1911, the Marist Brothers accepted an invitation to establish a school for boys in Lismore and it operated until the inception of Trinity Catholic College. Since 1985 both the Sisters and Brothers have had pivotal roles in the direction that Trinity has taken and even today that role continues. The Sisters and Brothers both hold Mary, the Mother of God, to be central to their vocation and we in the College community share in that vocation. This year is the 130th anniversary of when the Sisters set up their first small school in Lismore hence 15th August, 1886 is a day to which we trace our roots and we celebrate it a little like we would celebrate a birthday. We call it Foundation Day. Yes, we will have cake and yes , there will be some change to the normal pattern of the day but most importantly Bishop Jarrett will celebrate Mass with us. There will be space for parents who would like to participate and it would be great to see you here. Mass is set to commence at 11.00 am in the Trinity Sports Centre. At the conclusion of the Foundation Day Mass our 2016/2017 College Captains and Ministry Captains will be announced and we will recongise staff who have contributed many years of service to Trinity. BROTHER JOHN Last Friday Brother John began his sabbatical leave which will take him to study in Italy and America. He is due to return on 14th November and probably no one will be happier to see him back than me. While I will fill Brother’s role in an acting capacity, Mr Tony Flood will be the acting Head of Middle School. 2017 For the last few weeks our Leadership Teams in the College have been looking forward to 2017. This past week we have held subject selection information nights for current Year 8 and 10 students. Our timetable construction process has started and staff requirements are being assessed. One ingredient that has yet to be addressed relates to the students. If you know that your daughter/so will not be returning to Trinity in 2017 could you please contact the College Registrar, Ms Robyn Stuart (ph 66276622). Dear Parents/Guardians,

FEAST OF THE ASSUMPTION – FOUNDATION DAYNext Monday, 15th August, will see Catholics celebrating the special place that Mary, the mother of God, holds in their faith. St Carthage’s Parish Mass Times

At this stage of the Term Year 12 students are nearing the conclusion of their final assessment tasks prior to the HSC. These Trial exams are created to mirror the rigor of the actual HSC and I look forward to seeing the results in the upcoming weeks.

Parents/Carers of Year 12 students would have seen the letter of information concerning the Graduation Ball on 11th November. If you haven’t seen the hard copy, an electronic copy is being sent to all Year 12 parents by today. The theme for this year is ‘Dancing under the Stars’ and with all attending in formal attire it will certainly be a night of elegance.

Year 11 students have commenced the process for the attainment of College Captain, Ministry Captain and House Captain for 2017. The young people who have been nominated are outstanding and I look forward to the announcement of each of these positions commencing with our College Captains and Ministry Captains at the conclusion of the Foundation Day Mass. Once these four young people have been named then the House Captain positions can be discerned, and those announcements will be just prior to the End of Course exams. At this stage Year 11 students are working solidly on their Preliminary courses, with the End of Course exams scheduled to be conducted in Weeks 8 and 9 of this Term.

Year 10 students have commenced their subject selections for 2017 and I thank all of those Year 10 students who have completed their acceptance of the Letter of Expectations of students applying to continue to Year 11 2017. If you as parents/carers are aware that your daughter/son will not be continuing at Trinity Catholic College next year, please contact the Registrar’s office as a matter of urgency as staffing of subjects is dependent on student numbers. I am sure that each Year 10 student will be interviewed by their Head of House as the Term unfolds so that they will receive support in this decision making time.

Classes resume for ALL Year 12 students on Monday 15th August. Year 12 students will be attending 4 classes during this day, as well as being part of the Foundation Day Mass.

Have a lovely week

STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE COUNCIL NOMINATIONS2016/2017 SRC elections are currently taking place at the College. An invitation was given to the student body to self nominate for the 2016/2017 SRC.

Each of the nominees for the SRC are required to give a 90 second speech to the rest of their Year level outlining who they are and why they think they would be an effective representative for their Year group with the upcoming SRC.

Once these speeches have been made each Year level will vote on the students they think will make the best SRC representatives. Voting closes on Monday, 15th August.

Thank you to all students for nominating and for your willingness to put yourself forward as a prospective leader of Trinity Catholic College.

YEAR 9 REFLECTION DAYOn Thursday, 30th June our Year 9 students travelled to Alstonville Baptist Church for their annual Reflection Day. The day was facilitated by Realtalk Australia. Realtalk is all about getting real on the topics of sex, relationships and personal identity. Their Reflection Days are based on Christian Values and utilize the personal experiences of the presenters.

The day was broken into 3 distinct parts combining ice breaking games, team building activities, personal testimonies and sharings from the presenters. The final part of the day saw the male and female students separated from each other. This allowed for honest input from the students on issues such as body image and self-esteem.

My thanks to the RealTalk team for facilitating such a successful day. I also convey my thanks to the Year 9 Religious Education teachers who assisted on the day.

YEAR 7 REFLECTION DAY 2016Last week on Thursday, 4th August our Year 7 students and Year 7 Religious Education staff took time out of their normal routine for their Reflection Day. The day was held at the Alstonville Baptist Church with the event facilitated by Mrs Axman and myself. Mrs Axman and I were wonderfully supported by students in the Year 10 CSYMA class as well as a number of Year 11 students. It was fantastic to see our Year 7’s being mentored throughout the day by our senior students who led the small group activities.

The theme of the day was “Understanding Me”. This theme challenged our Year 7 students firstly, to reflect on themselves in regards to their unique gifts and talents and secondly, how they can offer their unique gifts and talents to their Year level and the wider school community. The day builds on the theme of ‘Belonging’ from the Year 7 Community Day that took place back in Term One. The Year 10 CSYMA students presented a dramatization of the “Parable of the Talents” followed by a number of personal testimonies from two students who shared how they use their own gifts and talents.

Our Reflection Days are a critical aspect in the faith life of Trinity Catholic College. My sincere thanks to the manner in which our Year 7 students embraced the day. I would also like to thank the staff who assisted on the day as well as those Year 10 and 11 students who participated as leaders throughout the day. Your presence and support is greatly appreciated.

ATTENTION YEAR 10 FAMILIES AND STUDENTS Immersion is a powerful strategy in helping us understand and in-volve ourselves in Jesus’ mission. Developed over 10 years, Trinity’s method forms the whole person - their empathy, humanity, faith and responsibility. Immersion is first and foremost an experience of being with others.

Guided throughout the experience by critical and prayerful questioning, we recognize that we are involved in and partly responsible for our global society. Immersion participants’ learning and experience continues long after they have returned home. They return with new friends and a broader vision of what it means to be a member of the Church.

In 2017, we will be offering four Immersion experiences:• Santa Teresa, Northern Territory• Tenaru, Solomon Islands• Siem Reap, Cambodia (Male students only)• Chennai, India (Female Students only)

Application forms for our Immersion program will be available to current Year 10 students at the beginning of Week 5, Term 3. These can be collected from Mrs Axman or Mr Miller. Applications will close Friday, 26th August. Students who apply will then be interviewed in Week 7 before the announcement of successful applicants in Week 8.

If you would like more information on our Immersion Program please do not hesitate to contact Mrs Clare Axman ([email protected]) or Mr Luke Miller ([email protected]) at the College.

YEAR 7 CRYSTAL GROWING COMPETITIONEach year the RACI runs a crystal growing competition for NSW. Students at Trinity were invited to a crystal growing workshop where instructions were given on how to grow a good crystal. Students were encouraged to focus on both clarity and size. Students were then given an Alum pack to take home and experiment on over 6 weeks. 3 students returned crystals at the end of the period and they are shown above. Well done to Tanesha for the clarity, Joel for the size and to Daniel for both size, clarity and the shape of his crystal. Due the the high quality of Daniel’s crystal (checked by our Chemistry experts Mr Kubils and Mrs Parker) it was sent off by express mail to the RACI as our entry for 2016. Fingers crossed!

Year 7 Science have been getting into their First hand investigation at the start of Term 3, groups of motivated and well behaved students have been seen on sunny days, engaged in dropping paper cones from various heights. The picture depicts 703 enjoying their practical work. Well done Year 7.

Ms Kate Ashdown - Assistant Head of Science

YEAR 8 SCIENCE

This Term, students in Year 8 Science classes have been exploring animal body systems in greater detail. One of the key practical experiences for this topic is to perform a dissection of a pig heart (sourced from the local supermarket). While this activity is not compulsory, most students were keenly interested in learning the different features of the heart in a hands-on way. The functional role of the heart in maintaining a healthy body was also explored, with many students sharing some of their insights from family experiences. There could be a heart surgeon tucked in amongst this lot!

TRINITY BRIDGE BUILDING CLUB Waking up in the early hours of Wednesday morning, a group of 12 students, accompanied by Mrs McKenzie and Mr Everingham set off on the ‘flash’ Trinity Bus for a 3 hour drive up to St Laurence’s College in Brisbane.

The Year 9 students: Eleonor Logan-Cole, Frewoini Baume and Maddy Gill (Team Something Smart) Jacinta Wu, Blaire Alexander-Gordon, and Jacob Brentnall (The Truss-Worthy Team) Liam Baillie, Casey Lewis and Arky Walker (The Ghetto Masters) made up the three successful teams Trinity had in the Aurecon Bridge Building competition. Madilen Callister, Daniel Willock-Minkov and Declan Ryan (Year 7) also attended to watch and gain ideas as they (and others) will be the future bridge builders for Trinity!

We had dedicated ourselves to the Trinity Bridge Building Club every Thursday lunch and every lunch for the weeks leading up to the competition. From Mr Everingham’s extensive and amazing knowledge of bridge construction and Mrs McKenzie’s loads of enthusiasm and support, all the three teams managed to construct creative and innovative bridges. We had created practice bridges and read the very specific competition guidelines in order to make our bridges suitable for the judging and prize categories. Our bridges were judged by professional engineers on the following things: Innovation – the amount of creativity and originality of the bridge, Efficiency – weight to strength ratio; Strength – amount of weight it could take; All-rounder – total score received after the scores were received.

We were driven up by Mr Everingham, and our trip was filled with laughter, occasionally for the terrible bridge jokes told, even though we were all extremely tired! But our sleepiness wore out quickly and was replaced with excitement as we were finally going to the competition! We arrived at St Laurence’s around 9:00am, and the testing started almost immediately. The 50-60 paddle-pop stick, cardboard and PVA glue bridges amazed us as there was such a variation of designs from the same materials. Teams competed in a randomly selected order, and the first Trinity team to compete was the Truss-Worthy Team! Their bridge managed to support a solid weight of 43.6kgs, before it started to fail and finally break. During the lead up to the judging and testing, Blair entertained the 200 people with many inspirational quotes and jokes, and had an emotional goodbye to the bridge ‘Bridget’. The last team to be called were The Ghetto Masters, whose bridge held 31.6kgs. While this bridge was being tested, Arky displayed a hilarious ‘bridge dance’ on stage, while waiting for it to also crack. These two bridges scored within the middle of all the other schools scores. Well done!

But the Bridge Trinity is now most proud of is the bridge from Team Something Smart, who are now holding the Trinity Bridge Building record. This bridge held 101.6 kilograms! It then received the Strength award: a giant cheque of $500.00 for the school, and Eleonor, Frewoini and Maddy received $50 each.

We had an amazing experience and would like to hugely thank Mrs McKenzie and Mr Everingham for helping and taking us all to the 2016 Aurecon Bridge Building competition!

We hope many more students will do it for years to come!By Frewoini, Eleonor, Jacinta, Jacob and Maddy.

YEAR 10 ART EXCURSIONIn today’s busy world, it is easy to overlook the sense of calm, peace and happiness that can accompany those places we hold dear. The smells, colours and sounds of special places are evocative memories that stay with us for a lifetime.

This Term, Year 10 Art students are immersing themselves in the craft and skills of artist books. They aim to create a multi-textured book to represent a special space. For inspiration, Wednesday, 27th August, they visited the rustic and wonderful Lismore Art Space to meet Joanna Kambourian, a practicing artist specialising in printmaking and artist books.

In just one day, we were transformed. From having little experience or inspiration, we were energised toward ecstatic, creative ideas to express the rich, sensory textures of our special places. We made two books ourselves, whilst gaining valuable knowledge from Jo on the delicate steps of artist bookmaking.

Our Art excursion was enlivening and helpful. It was a joy to learn more about this ellusive practice and create our own book of space and story.

Embracing and envisaging the work of Carol Dweck, Trinity has been working towards a positive approach to learning and increased self belief. With the belief that intelligence is not fixed and with utmost effort and persistence, goals can be achieved, we have been encouraging our students to adopt this mindset; a growth mindset. The importance of implementing this message into our school is to provide a positive culture that will bring about the strive for success within all students. As a part of this initiative, a committee of passionate students gathered 100 growth mindset oriented quotes from our community, placed them on A4 sized templates and sent them to Signarama to be created into permanent plastic signs.

On Saturday, 30th July, a group of 27 students, staff members and parents gathered to continue this process; fixing 100 signs college-wide. With these signs placed across the school, the students and all those visiting the College are continuously

reminded of the importance of adopting a growth mindset and how this philosophy has led to the success of so many individuals.

We hope to see you adopting this mindset and improving your mindset for the best! Many thanks to all those who have helped this become a reality.

Growth Mindset News

Our Year 7 cohort have been meeting in small groups with Year 10 Peer Leaders working through a range of activities that focus on resilience.

Earlier this term students explored the idea that how they view themselves and their challenges can affect the outcomes of situations. Students discussed helpful ways to view challenges. They considered keeping things in perspective, separating emotions and ascertaining facts to accurately identify the problem to be addressed.

This week, students looked at: Understanding how influential our thoughts are in responding to challenges is crucial. Students recognised the choice to respond with open or limiting thoughts. A difficult or new situation may require hard work, perseverance, courage or support from others. Open thoughts allow us to make the most of any situation feeling optimistic about the possible outcomes.

Limiting thoughts still allow us to work through challenges. However, they prevent us from stretching our abilities and exploring positive outcomes to bring about change.

The photos show you just some of the activities being accomplished by our Peer Support Groups.

2016 AUSTRALASIAN MARIST CRICKET CARNIVAL

In December this year, Trinity is hosting the Australasian Cricket Carnival.

At present we are looking for host families to billet two male students (minimum) from various Marist Schools across Australia and New Zealand.

If interested, you would be required to host a minimum of 2 male students from Tuesday, 6th December to Tuesday, 13th December.

We require approximately 40 billet families to assist for the duration of the carnival.

If you would like to host students from our visiting Marist schools or if you have any questions, please contact: Mr Matt Barlow: T: 6627 6662 or E: [email protected].

Thank you for your consideration of this request.

BILL TURNERCongratulations to the Trinity Bill Turner Cup (Boys) and Bill Turner Trophy (Girls) Football teams who have both made the Quarter Finals of the U/15 competition.

The competition runs from Far North Queensland down to Victoria and is open to all high schools.

In the Round of 16 matches the boys defeated Bishop Druitt College, Coffs Harbour 2-1 and the girls defeated McAuley College, Grafton 3-0.

Both schools now play the winners of the Hunter and Central Coast Regions for a place in the semi-finals.

This is an amazing achievement considering the only other schools that have a male and female team still in the competition are Westfield and Hills Sports High Schools from Sydney, which are specialist sports high schools and Cavendish Road State High School from Brisbane which has a Football Academy attached to the school.

Well done to the students involved in both sides as well as the coaches and managers for their efforts.

Faith is not in decline around the world. Religious affiliation is growing and faith remains a vital part of the life, culture, thinking and behaviour of individuals in Australia, positively impacting society and culture in many and varied ways.

In our multi-faith and multicultural country, religious freedom is an essential basic human right. People of faith and the organisations that have grown out of our faith traditions make a massive contribution to things such as education, healthcare, aged care and an array of social services in our nation.

It is important that people of faith – those who are regularly connected to organised religion, and those who simply regard themselves as believers – mark the faith they identify with when participating in the National Census.

YOUR YES IN THIS

CENSUS MATTERS

Saying “yes” to your belief matters because it:

1. Allows people of faith, their religious leaders and government representatives to credibly and confidently contribute to the public discourse on a variety of issues such as the economy, education, healthcare and social services.

2. Helps to underline the importance of freedom of belief in Australia and also enables leaders to understand the proportional breakdown of beliefs so as to best nurture interfaith harmony that is a feature of our multicultural nation.

3. Provides decision makers with vital information for effectively planning for the future of our nation such as the location of places of worship and the many ‘good works’ done by people of faith across religious traditions.

4. Provides a snapshot of who we are, including what we value and what drives us. For so many Australians, their values and reasons for the way they act stem from their religious beliefs.

5. Can be used as a future determinant of the allocation of roles and government resourcing and co-funding with faith groups who make a massive contribution to society in education, healthcare and social services.

Stand up and be counted when you participate in the Census this Tuesday 9 August 2016.

Produced by the Catholic Diocese of Wollongong for all faith traditions and people of goodwill.
