From the Principal Trinity Catholic College Lismore the Lantern No. 10 Week Nine Term Two Wednesday, 21st June, 2017 Dear Parents/Carers, We are constantly going to the door of our life and pushing some people out and inviting others in. We determine that some people belong inside with us and that others don’t. We do it as individuals, as communities, as nations. We divide people into friends or foes, saints or sinners, allies or adversaries. Those who are on our side are invited in; those who are on the opposite side are pushed out. One of the great summary statements of our Christian faith that underlies everything that Jesus taught us about how to live together would have to be, “Do to others as you would have them do to you.” John 6:31. This was not a life principle that Jesus left behind for others to live; He lived it in His own life. In John’s gospel, we find Jesus, a Jew, living in a land occupied by the Romans. The Romans have a distinct dislike for the Jews and the Jews return the sentiment. Yet, when Jesus is asked to heal a Roman official’s son, He does so immediately, no strings attached, no power plays, no political games. Jesus does not hold grudges, nor does He require obedience before demonstrating love. He cares for people regardless of their personality, position or possessions, their racial status, their rags or their riches. John 4: 51-56. In our own lives, we all find it hard not to be “doorkeepers” when we first meet someone who’s “different”. Actually, if we look at each other we will see that God is rather fond of variety. We all have different fingerprints, DNA, a variety of blood types, voice sounds, body shapes and sizes. We look different and have a wide variety of gifts and talents. So, how are we when it comes to “Do unto others as you would have them do to you?” Do we respect other people for their life choices and not think that everyone should be like us? Most times the manner in which people live is what they were born into, in the same way we have a manner in which we live. And how about children and young people? What do they perceive about life, through our attitudes and behaviours, as they progress through their formative years? WARREN QUIGLEY We say farewell and thank you to Mr Warren Quigley at the end of Term 2. Warren commenced work at the College in 1997 and is retiring at the end of this term. In this time, Warren has been a key member of the HSIE Department. He is presently teaching Business Studies, Commerce and Geography. We wish Warren all the best on his retirement and he leaves us in the knowledge that he will be missed by both his students and the staff. CONGRATULATIONS TO KATH ELLIS Kath Ellis has accepted a two-year position as Director of Curriculum at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart in Alice Springs. Our Lady of the Sacred Heart is a K-12 Marist School located on three campuses. I have no doubt that Kath will find this position rewarding and will do an excellent job. I thank Kath for all she has done over the years at Trinity Catholic College and I wish her and her family all the best with their move to Alice Springs. Kath has taken leave without pay while she is undertaking this new role. Her replacement as Champagnat Head of House will be announced before the end of this Term. SCHOOL ZONES A reminder to all our parents ahead of the break at the end of Term 2 that school zones remain in place for the safety of our children and families. School zones operate on all gazetted school days, which are all days the school is open, even pupil free days. School zones operate as normal until (and include) Friday 30 June and resume on Monday 17 July, whether students are present or not. START OF TERM 3 A reminder that Term 3 commences for students on Tuesday 18 July with Monday 17 July being a staff day. Take care and God Bless, Brother John Hilet, fms Principal

Dear Parents/Carers,

We are constantly going to the door of our life and pushing some people out and inviting others in. We determine that some people belong inside with us and that others don’t. We do it as individuals, as communities, as nations. We divide people into friends or foes, saints or sinners, allies or adversaries. LABELLING YOUR CHILD’S UNIFORM AND SCHOOL ITEMS

As you can imagine, in a school the size of Trinity, both site offices receive lost property each day that does not have the student’s name indicated. Many expensive items are in lost property and we do the best we can to return items to their respective owners if we can identify them. However, we can’t hold onto these items indefinitely so, lost property is culled at the end of each Term. Any items in Lost Property that are not able to be returned due to lack of identification will be donated to needy families in our community at the end of each Term.

HEAD OF HOUSE NEWSCannane HouseMost of the Cannane Crocodile family are aware that Mr McMahon has been on leave since about Week 3 this Term. In his absence we have been very fortunate to have Ms Hunter fill in for him and do a magnificent job. We are blessed to have staff of Ms Hunter’s ability and enthusiasm and I am sure the young crocodiles appreciate her efforts. Next Term will see Mr McMahon return to resume his normal duties.

Champagnat HouseIt is with both sadness and joy that we will say farewell to Ms Ellis at the end of Term as she and her family relocate to Alice Springs. Kath was the founding Head of Champagnat House and the spirit and community that exists in that House is a result of her enthusiasm and commitment to her students. She has been a member of the pastoral team for the last 10 or so years and has provided wise and thoughtful input to discussions and decisions. Her PDHPE background has allowed her to be very involved in many aspects of the College and for a number of years she has been the guiding force behind many Netball teams.

I know the Champagnat Saints and many other staff and students will miss having Ms Ellis with us, but the opportunity presented to her is too good to let pass. I know she is quite adept with social media so I am sure she will be a few keystrokes away on Facebook for those hoping to keep in contact. Go well Ms Ellis.

TRIVIA NIGHTSOur Junior Trivia night was held last night and a fun night was had by all who attended. The Senior night is planned for next week. These are both great functions and there is a real social nature to them that is hard to replicate in other College activities. My thanks to Ms Hunter, Ms Flood and Mrs Jenny Dwyer who have been the mainstays behind these events. Please note the 4pm start and the 7.30pm finish time.

PEER SUPPORTWe are now entering the last two weeks of a 7 week programme of Peer Support offered to our Year 7 students which is led by many of our Year 10 students.

So far students have explored the idea, that how their view of themselves and their challenges can affect the outcomes of these situations. Our Year 10 leaders have provided opportunities for Year 7 students to recognize that there is a choice when responding to challenging situations. Developing a mindset that will best respond to a situation may require hard work, perseverance, courage or support from others. Open thoughts allow us to make the most of any situation, helping us to feel optimistic about the possible outcomes. While limiting thoughts still allow us to work through challenges, they prevent us from stretching our abilities and exploring positive outcomes to bring about change. Visit www.mindsetonline.com for examples of praise that will encourage your child to adopt open thoughts in all areas of their life.

I would like to thank Mr Flood for his general organisation of the programme and Ms Ellis and Mr Mayes for their support in running the programme.

COLLEGE PHOTOSThese have now been completed and hopefully should be back to you in early Term 3. Thank you, parents, for ensuring that your sons and daughters have presented in uniform for this event.

BRAINSTORM PRODUCTIONSOn the last Thursday of Term, both Year 7 and Year 9 cohorts will view a drama production that is relevant to their age group. These productions have been a facet of our pastoral programme for many years and the productions often speak to students in a way that cannot be found in the classroom. Please ask your child about these shows once they have been viewed.

Immersion News

ST JOSEPH’S TENARU – TRINITY IMMERSION

Trinity recently had the pleasure of hosting an Immersion Team from St Joseph’s, Tenaru located in the Solomon Islands. The group of eight students was led by two teachers, Mr John Loft and Madame Julieanne Waihuru. The group arrived on Thursday 1 June and stayed with us here in Lismore until Saturday 10 June. The students were billeted by Trinity students who had recently returned from Immersion in the Solomon Islands. It was a busy week for our guests – we had our Champagnat Day celebrations on Tuesday 6 June followed by the College Athletics Carnival. The carnival allowed the St Joseph’s students the opportunity to compete against our own students. It was great to see the comradery between our students and the group from Tenaru. The students spent the other days attending classes and exploring our wonderful region. The final Friday of their visit was spent at Movieworld on the Gold Coast. We are very fortunate to have this special relationship with St Jospeh’s Secondary College in the Solomon Islands. My thanks to the staff and families who opened their homes to our guests, it is very much appreciated.

Mr Luke Miller

CAMBODIA IMMERSIONAll the best to the Cambodia Immersion team who head off during the holidays. WINTER SLEEP OUTOn Friday 16th June, 120 Trinity students attended our annual Winter Sleep Out. This year our annual Winter Sleep Out was held on St Joseph’s Site. The purpose of this evening was to raise awareness of the issue of homelessness in Australia and our local community and for students to experience sleeping outdoors for one night. Over the course of the night information sessions were conducted on the issue of homelessness in our community, our guest speaker Fr Erik from Kyogle Parish visited to share his personal story in relation to Refugee Week, a basic meal was shared and the students experienced sleeping outdoors for the night. The energy and enthusiasm for the students to learn and to connect on a personal level about these issues was incredible. On the evening students banded together and donated over $400! This money will go to St Vincent’s De Paul to assist those living with disadvantage and homelessness in our local community. A special thank you to our amazing Youth Ministry Coordinators; Gabe Douglas and Elise Pereira. They worked for weeks on organising activities for the evening and showed incredible leadership throughout.

WINTER APPEALOur Winter Appeal continues until Friday 23rd June. The Trinity Justice Team are seeking donations from the following year groups. These items will be donated to SVdP so they can continue to offer support to those experiencing homelessness and disadvantage in our community. Year 7 & 8:• Toothbrushes and toothpaste or/and combs and hairbrushes

Year 9 & 10:• Packets of travel-size tissues• Antibacterial wipes

Year 11 & 12:• Socks for adults of varying sizes (warm socks would be good, however not too big and fluffy as these can be impractical

for day-to-day use)• Soap/travel size body wash Please place your donations in SJS office by Friday. Thank you for your contributions.

BOND UNIVERSITY MOOTING COMPETITIONTrinity Catholic College recently competed in the Bond University National Mooting competition. Congratulations to Zoe Coles, who was Senior counsel on the day for being awarded one of the Individual Oralist Awards. Zoe delivered an excellent argument for the respondent. A fantastic effort!

QUT BLUESHIFT NATIONAL FINALS On Saturday May 27, Sage Findlay, Caitlin McKenzie and Larni Simpson, accompanied with parents and Business teacher, Mr Morgan, travelled to Brisbane’s Queensland University of Technology Gardens Point campus to compete in the national finals of the BlueShift Business Plan competition. The competition involved constructing a business plan for an Australian business, with a focus on suggesting options for their future expansion, both overseas and in the domestic market. This year, the focus company for the business report was Burger Urge, an Australian fast food business. Following a successful written submission, we were selected to compete in the national final alongside another 11 schools from various areas of Australia. On finals day, we gave a 15-minute presentation to University lecturers and alumni, before being questioned extensively on the details of our business plan. Whilst we did not take out the top prize, it was a great experience.

ART EXPRESSOn Friday night I had the pleasure of attending the opening of Art Express at Grafton Regional Gallery. Art Express showcases the top 2% of the state’s Body of Work submissions from the previous HSC Visual Arts year. Included in the 50 works on display were 3 student works from Trinity: Emma Taylor, Arabella Barnard and Hannah Giddy. These students enjoy the experience of having their work ‘shown to a very broad appreciative audience in an exhibition that is nationally and internationally recognized’, as stated in the opening address by Rosemary Gorman, Creative Arts Inspector (NESA).

The Body of Work encourages HSC Visual Arts students to aim for high technical accomplishment in a chosen art form as well as conceptual strength. The outstanding skills and aesthetics, as well as the concerns and voices of young adults are heard loud and clear at Art Express. Trinity’s Year 11 art students will have the opportunity to visit this exhibition during Week 10 and will be able to see first-hand, Trinity students’ work as well as the thought provoking work of other exemplary art students from across the state. I encourage everyone to visit this exhibition whilst it is in our area.

On Friday, 9th June our amazing dancers competed at Coffs Harbour Dance Eisteddfod. The day started at 6.45am departing from Trinity and headed to Woolgoolga High School to compete in the Secondary Schools section. The groups that competed were our Year 7 Dance Ensemble, Year 8 Dance Ensemble, Girls Hip Hop Crew, Dance Company and 10 Elective Dance. The Trinity students were outstanding in their performances, Ms Unwin and myself were extremely proud of every single dancer. We walked away with some amazing results; 2nd place - 10 Dance Elective, 3rd place - Girls Hip Hop Crew and Highly Commended - Dance Company. Our extra-curricular groups have shown commitment and dedication to their dance journey by participating in weekly dance classes that are held during lunch times and extra rehearsals held on weekends. We are so proud! Well done to everyone involved!

YEAR 10 FOOD TECHNOLOGYMr Ferderer's Year 10 Food Technology class has just completed planning, designing, cooking and packaging an Aussie icon 'line extension'. Some very interesting and creative products were designed. Lemon and Raspberry Vanilla Slice, Triple Choc chip mega cookies, Vegetarian Sausage Rolls, Strawberry Melting Moments and Tri flavoured /coloured lamingtons. The students also created a survey, analysed and collated the results and thoroughly enjoyed doing such a creative task.

Mr Col Ferderer

YEAR 7 JEWELLERYMr Ferderer's 703 class have been producing Woven Wire rings. As well as a design folio that documents the planning, design, material properties of metal/wire along with many other design related theory this term.

On 2nd June the Year 11 Work Studies class travelled to the Gold Coast shopping centers of Robina and Pacific Fair. The purpose of this excursion was to investigate the variety of work environments, consumer choices, promotion and selling of goods and work opportunities.

A workbook full of interesting activities was completed during the course of the day enabling students to interview shoppers and retail employees, photograph shop fronts, purchase lunch for a mere $8 and choose a retail outlet they would like to work at.

The day was very successful allowing students to experience the everyday retail workplace of a large shopping centre (Pacific Fair is now QLD’s largest shopping Centre with more than 400 specialty stores) .

‘We all had a wonderful experience’ and for some students this was the first time they had been to the Gold Coast.

Tuesday evening, 20th June, saw the TSC full of excited and eager competitors for the 2017 Trinity Triviathon. There were 43 teams, lots of noise, lots of food, soaring paper planes, and loads of enthusiasm! Year 7 definitely predominated in the number of teams – they were determined to win one of the fantastic 60 door prizes on offer. We had several ‘mexican’ teams, dominos, spices, pyjama parties, tea parties and many other imaginative themes. The Best-Dressed team of the night went to The Spice Girls [Hunter Magnay, Isabelle Ball, Laura Ferguson and Elsa Brown]. The first, second and third places for the Trivia Rounds were keenly fought for, with often only a half mark between first and second. Congratulations to our Trinity Trivia Junior Champions for 2017, The Domino Effect [Sophie Pereira, Molly Esslement, Imogen Dwyer and Grace Cartwright].

Thank you so much to our sponsors - Supercheap Auto Lismore, Bunnings Lismore, Spotlight, McDonalds Lismore, the Macadamia Castle, Harvey Norman. A huge thank you to the House Captains Council and the SRC for their help in running the night, to the staff who supervised, to Jenny Dwyer for sourcing all our prizes, and to Therese Hughes for being our scorer and sorting out winners of each round. I must not forget – congratulations to our Dancing Queen – Taylah Bell!
