The Snow Tr ip 2016Each year students and staff of LHC look forward to attending the annual snow trip, this year was no different.

Eight students and myself were lucky enough to be able to join with students and staff of Kadina High Campus to make the extremely enjoyable 15 hour bus trip to the ski fields of Smiggins Hole, Perisher Valley and Blue Cow for a one week adventure.

Don’t let the idea of a 15 hour bus trip fool you, as everyone was in high spirits and looked forward to the chance of inventing new sleeping positions interrupted only by the early morning stops at various petrol stations. Breakfast in Cooma was a delight and meant only a little way to go until we hit the snow.

We dropped our bags at Vikas Ski Lodge in Jindabyne, our fantastic home away from home for the next six nights, changed into something suitable for getting to the slopes and then off we went. Our ski hire people couldn’t do enough to calm nerves, make the necessary adjustments to boots, skis, snowboards and all forms of personal snow gear and set us on our way. Off we went onto the snow!!

As lessons had been organised for us for each day we waited in anticipation of meeting our instructors and making those first death defying if not seemingly easy first attempts at standing up on one or two slim pieces of waxed timber and not falling off and hurting ourselves or others!

There was no easy way to it apart from just having a go… and everyone did. Resilience was the key, fall down, get back up and try again, over and over until skill levels were gained (bodies bruised) and competency was achieved. For some of us this took a bit longer than others. We laughed at ourselves and each other, helped and encouraged each other, cried (frustration mainly) but never gave up. And that was just day one.

Back at our accommodation we organised sleeping arrangements, had a magnificent meal, watched a movie and

everyone was ready for bed after what had been an extremely long and adventurous day.

The next five days ranged from glorious sunshine with light winds through to a white out where you couldn’t see 20 feet in front of you and a day of overcast, windy conditions not really great for snow sports…but we continued on.

Lessons continued to improve the ability of all concerned with some members of the group advancing at an astonishing rate and others happy to plod along and get the basics right. What was important was that each and every day we turned up and continued to do something that for a few of the group put you right outside your comfort zone.

Skiing from Blue Cow back to Smiggins Hole on the Thursday afternoon with the majority of our group (20+) was an amazing experience. There were some technical sections to navigate, fast downhills, tight corners and some rough terrain and a T-bar which some had not been on before. We all made it from the experienced to the novice…lessons were paying off.

Our last day was a bit bleak with strong winds closing some areas but this did not deter many of the group. Off they went to lessons or to free ski and a chance to make the most of their last day on the snow. Some however had succumbed to sickness or tiredness and retired to the warmth of the café for hot chocolate or just to rest.

The bus trip home was similar to the bus trip down earlier in the week…long! Most of us were tired from the days skiing and from a long week on the slopes, so to sit on the bus and regroup, zone out to a movie and just relax or sleep was enjoyable. First stop Canberra for a food break then back on the bus for the trip north, stops at Karuah and Macksville broke up the intermittent sleep and before long it was time to hop off the bus, get our belongings together and go home…a hot shower and bed for most I think.

The accommodation at Vikas Ski Lodge in Jindabyne was a perfect place to stay for our group. The rooms are comfortable and cosy and are close enough to the shopping facilities in Jindabyne for our students to buy all the necessities they needed…two minute noodles, chips, drinks and other snacks!

The food for breakfast and dinner was plentiful with an enormous variety each day. Hot and cold food was available and if you didn’t have enough to eat it was really your own fault. Mine hosts, Charlie and Kerry and their staff could not do enough for our group and we look forward to seeing them again next year.

Our bus drivers, Mark and Mark, were a wealth of knowledge and support on the trip. Their local knowledge made getting to and from the snow each day much easier and their willingness to help with the smallest of items is appreciated. Who can forget the great (dad!!) jokes that Mark had for us?? How do you tell the difference between the snow gum, the elephant gum and the dog gum???? (see answers below!)

The snow trip is a fantastic excursion and one that won’t be forgotten for a long time and on behalf of our group I would like to thank the students and staff of Kadina High Campus, Mr Wallace, Ms Russell and Mr Dali for their acceptance of our group. Their organisation and friendly attitude towards us and making the trip enjoyable for all was greatly appreciated.

Our students had a great time, learned some new skills and learned a lot about themselves and their ability to adapt to a different climate, solve problems, fit in with a new group of people and cope with the long days. These skills will help them in their senior years at school as well as life in general.

It was a pleasure to go away with a really well mannered, courteous, friendly group of students. Plenty of photos were taken over the week and I look forward to seeing them.

As Mr Wallace would say each day…Get Excited!!

Lismore Per forming Ar ts Fest ival - Tuesday 23 August

The Rivers P-12 Learning Community Dance Initiative has once again displayed its extensive capacity to provide students within our Rivers primary and secondary public schools network with exciting opportunities to showcase their talents. Sixteen members of The Rivers Junior Dance Ensemble performed their beautiful piece titled “In Bloom” with grace, maturity and outstanding energy, and received positive feedback on the night. All members should be very proud of their achievements; they have continued to earn their place in the elite ensemble.

The Rivers Secondary College schools have recently joined together to create the first Rivers Aboriginal Performing Arts Ensemble. The ensemble consists of 13 members who worked exceptionally hard to prepare for their second performance together on the Tuesday night of LPAF. The students performed their piece titled “Mother Earth” and in doing so made a significant impact on all those who had the pleasure to view it. The audience were left feeling blown away by their professionalism, focus and connection to the meaning and spirituality of their piece; a very proud achievement for the students and staff involved.

R ivers Madness Wednesday 24 AugustThe Rivers Secondary College Combined Dance Ensemble includes 21 members from Years 8-10 who meet each Wednesday morning during sport electives and have created a whimsical dance piece titled “The Wonder of Alice”.

The Ensemble was invited to perform at the Rivers Madness HSC showcase, and the feedback was outstanding!! The students presented a flawless and captivating performance that they can be truly proud of. This was an amazing opportunity for the students to debut their new piece and demonstrate their incredible performance skills to their peers, families and staff of the College.

Engaging parents in educat ion

8

What is Parent Engagement?Parent engagement is being positively involved and active in your child’s learning. Your attitudes, values and behaviours can positively influence your child’s education outcomes.

We know that parents, families and carers are some of the most important influences on a child’s education. When you are positively engaged in your child’s education, they are more likely to attend and perform better at school.

Effective parent and family engagement in education is more than just participation in school meetings and helping with fundraising, it is actively engaging with your child’s learning, both at home and at school. When schools and families work together, children do better and stay in school longer.

You can support your child to get the most out of their schooling. The earlier you become engaged, the better it is for your children.

Why is parent engagement important?Parent engagement is associated with improvements across a range of indicators, including:• better education outcomes• enhanced engagement with school work• more regular school attendance• better behaviour• and increased social skills.Parent engagement is one of the four pillars of the Australian Government’s Students First reform agenda for schools.

How you can help your child do well at schoolWhile it’s important to stay informed and be involved in school activities where possible, there are lots of things you can do at home which can help your child to do better at school:• Have high yet achievable expectations of your child.• Talk regularly about school and the value of learning.• Encourage positive attitudes and respect for school and teachers.• Model the behaviours you would like to see in your child.

Other things you can do which have also been shown to have a positive impact are to:• Read out loud with your child and listen to your child read out loud.• Talk and ask about what they are learning.• Ask what was and was not fun at school.• Help them to develop strong work habits. One of the most effective ways parents and families can help children to do better at school is to make sure they go to school every day. School attendance has a major influence on educational outcomes. Students who attend school regularly are more likely to achieve better results at school and are more likely to complete their schooling.

Visit the Department of Education’s new Parent Engagement in Learning webpage for more tips and information to help you get involved in your child’s learning. From: https://www.studentsfirst.gov.au/engaging-parents-education
