UCB vs. UCD!!The tailgate with both TRENZA and Hermanos Unidos was a very family type of gathering by just being so friendly. Even though they didn’t all know each other they were having hugs and handshakes going around everywhere. Plus they made it so much fun. Awesome food was cooked by Rufino and Salina :) We had a great time watching most of the Hermanos playing flip cup the whole time and seeing how worked up they would get because they couldn’t do it. The highlight of the day was that this was the day when I met some of the sweetest ladies...especially those who got there early and were freezing with me: Alexis, Melissa, Gabby, Salina and Martha. Who would of thought I would be hanging out with all these lovely ladies later on. :) The other highlight was that my boyfriend (my sweetie, Fred) surprised me by buying tickets to the game for both of us and taking me to the tailgate!Overall this was a very welcoming, friendly, and fun day with everyone I knew, with my boyfriend who I love, and with all the super sweet girls that I met and I’m beginning to get to know better. If I could get to have something from that day, it would be a hamburger because I’m starving at this moment. :)

What remains your favorite TRENZA memory?: The 2009 senior wine tasting trip at Napa. I bought a lot of wine, learned a lot, and got to trunk it on the way back (which made for a nice little nap ;-D)Advice for the sophomore/junior class (who aren't freshmen but aren't seniors yet either)? Take advantage of everything CAL and TRENZA has to offer.  Study abroad, take a deCal for fun, become involved in our community, mentor, etc :D

Leadership skills, I consider many Trenzudas some of my best friends and I am always amazed and inspired by the great work and accomplishments of our alumni. What remains your favorite TRENZA memory?: TRENZA’s 9th Birthday party!! I believe I became a bit famous at that particular event!Advice for the sophomore/junior class (who aren't freshmen but aren't seniors yet either)?: Always make sure you balance your college life. Be disciplined in your studies, work, and in your commitment to TRENZA it truly is a rewarding experience but, also HAVE FUN your undergraduate experience only happens once, so enjoy it!!

Name: Natalie Torres Representing the class of 2007. What are you doing now?: I am in my final year of law school at Boalt How did TRENZA prepare you for life after college?: Having a network of wonderful women who were as diverse as they come and always teaching me the value of friendship and solidarity. What remains your favorite TRENZA memory?: The welcome ceremony we did under candle light with alumni, it was the most intimate and honest conversation we had with each other. Advice for the sophomore/junior class (who aren't freshmen but aren't seniors yet either)? Enjoy each minute because undergrad flies by – at the same time be sure you take moments to reflect on what you experience and what you learn beyond the classroom. Being an undergrad at Cal exposes you to every culture and almost every type of opinion - it is a unique period of your life so treasure it and grow.

Name: Susanna Blake (Romandia)Representing the class of : 1999What are you doing now?: I live in Fremont, CA. I work as the HR Manager for ResponseLINK, LLC in Mountain View, CA. I am also the mother of a beautiful 5 month old. (Diana Alicia Blake)How did TRENZA prepare you for life after college?: TRENZA exposed me many networking events and socials. The group connected me to many people and as you know, we all act as a great resource to each other. I really needed this to make it through college. When I went into the "real world" and would find myself stumbling, I remembered to network network network! This is especially true when you start working a professional job. What remains your favorite TRENZA memory?: The circle! We still use it today. At Zeidy's bachlorette party we used the circle to honor the future bride to be!Advice for the sophomore/junior class (who aren't freshmen but aren't seniors yet either)?I don't care to give advice, just a reminder. You are all at Cal because you have worked hard and deserve to be there. No one gave you a  free pass to enter. As you are already have made it to one of the best universities, remember, you have what it takes to make it, anywhere! Have confidence in yourself and go after your dreams! As you do so, don't forget the people that helped you along the way. Your success, is theirs also.

Katie ARepresenting the class of 2010!What are you doing now?:  I work at a nonprofit in Downtown LA.  We provide scholarships, internships, and career development workshops to undergraduate and graduate students of color who are pursuing careers in the fields of advertising, marketing and public relations.  (I will be outreaching to Cal students - I'm planning a career development workshop in the Bay, so if you're interested let me know!) How did TRENZA prepare you for life after college?:  During my senior year, hanging out with alumni and learning from their experiences helped me think more about my life and what it would be like after college.  What remains your favorite TRENZA memory?:  The senior wine and cheese social with alumni.  Class of 2010 happened to have the biggest turn-out, and we all had a BLAST!  A group of us ended up crashing in the city at an alumna's house!  Advice for the sophomore/junior class (who aren't freshmen but aren't seniors yet either)?  I'm a travel bug, so my advice is to study abroad!  And there are places other than Spain and Mexico - leave your comfort zone and grow!  That's the fun advice.  I also have some boring, serious advice *sigh* but it's necessary, so here it goes: definitely think about your professional life after college.  Don't just think about it, do something about it and plan for it.  There's tons of stuff you can do to prepare: build your resume, work and/or volunteer (and do a good job, so you can have valuable relationships and references), and of course network! Networking is easy if you're active in organizations like TRENZA!  Get to know people - learn from them and help each other out.

Name: Stephanie PuentesRepresenting the class of: 2009What are you doing now? I am in transition: Finishing up my job as a Program Director with a non-profit at Richmond High School and moving to Sacramento to start a fellowship with the Executive Branch in late October. How did TRENZA prepare you for life after college?: It provided me with an invaluable network! TRENZUDAS are everywhere accomplishing great things and always happy to help. Whether I was applying to a program, moving to a new place, or needed someone to talk to about career decisions or personal issues, a TRENZUDA has always been available and willing to help. What remains your favorite TRENZA memory?: There are so many depending on the year, but doing the Senior Surpise with the Class of 2009 is something I will always cherish. We did something unique, crazy, and funny which I feel definitely represented our class.Advice for the sophomore/junior class (who aren't freshmen but aren't seniors yet either)?: In the midst of enjoying the college social scene do not forget why you decided to pursue an education and remember to develop yourself professionally and academically. College goes by quick so take advantage of every year, especially your summers, tolearn about what you like and to open doors for yourself aftergraduating. Also do not forget to develop those relationships with GSIs and Professors; it will make it a lot easier when in need of letters of recommendation.

Name: Marissa MarasiganRepresenting the class of 2010What are you doing now?: working full-time for UCB's College of Engineering, Dean's Office as an office assistant, volunteering for a domestic violence organization, studying for the GRE and will soon be applying to graduate schoolsHow did TRENZA prepare you for life after college?: TRENZA was always comforting as an undergrad, because I knew that if I was ever having a tough/long day, Thursday would come and I would instantly feel better. It has taught me that having a support network outside of family can be very important. I know that there are other professional womyn that I can lean on and look to for advice.  Being on Steering helped me practice working with others who might not necesarily share the same ideas/opinions as I do and figuring out how to accomplish goals as a team.  Although we often disagreed about topics, we all put the well-being of TRENZA and its members first and were able to effectively work together. What remains your favorite TRENZA memory?: Candlelit Memories my sophomore year. It was so inspiring hearing about what all these beautiful womyn went through that I would not expect and would not know about if it hadn't been for that event. Trenzudas are such strong womyn and it just shows how much we can overcome!Advice for the sophomore/junior class (who aren't freshmen but aren't seniors yet either)? Get started on internships, networking, research, fellowships NOW! When you graduate, you will appreciate being able to have that experience to add on to your resume and that network to lean on for job opportunities. Also, create a list of everything you want to accomplish/experience here at Berkeley as an undergrad and try to achieve everything before your senior year.  You don't want to end up with a packed schedule your last year. It can be as silly as finally walking up to the Big C or as serious as doing independent research.

Name:  Sylvia SanchezRepresenting the class of 2009.What are you doing now?: staff research associate, UCB School of Public Health, genes and environment laboratoryHow did TRENZA prepare you for life after college?:  TRENZA taught me as community service coordinator and co-chair the importance of time management and teamwork. it helped me stay organized and to plan ahead along with being open to new, non-traditional ideas. Working with so many girls and so many ideas helps remind me about the possibility that there could always be more than one solution to a problem. What remains your favorite TRENZA memory?: Fall and spring retreats. Its the most intimate times you will have where you learn the most about each other. You also experience the best adventures like getting stung by bees, getting eaten by bears, stories of aliens, sleeping with 5 people on a bed, or simply freezing at night under the stars. Advice for the sophomore/junior class (who aren't freshmen but aren'tseniors yeteither)? Have a balance between school and social activities. Having a planner might help keep you organized. also, its great to have a plan, but sometimes when things don't go as planned, there’s nothing wrong with creating your own detours.

Name: Sandra SaavedraRepresenting the class of: 1997What are you doing now?: Enjoying life and blessed to have a wonderful husband and two lovely babies, Ismael (3 yrs) and Catalina (1 yr). In addition, I am a Senior Human Resources Manager for Panda Restaurant Group (Panda Express) in Los Angeles. I have the opportunity to recruit, coach and advice our associates regarding performance and problem resolution. The best part of my job is coaching and mentoring others. How did TRENZA prepare you for life after college?:Allowed me to take on a leadership role, express myself in a safe environment among women - I was shy and insecure at times. And really be proud to be Latina and be confident of it in the work place. What remains your favorite TRENZA memory?: There are many, but overall just having the opportunity to meet all the wonderful Trenzudas and seeing how all have become professionals in their fields and also awesome moms! Advice for the sophomore/junior class (who aren't freshmen but aren't seniors yet either)? Network, network and network with professors and within your college/community organizations. Build good habits now (i.e. be on time, commit to deadlines) and work on your business writing skills - these are basic things needed and will be appreciated as you move up in your career/profession.

Name: Anel LajRepresenting the class of 1997What are you doing now?: Currently I'm a freelance writer specializing in sports, The Great Outdoors and travel. How did TRENZA prepare you for life after college? The connections I made to these mujeres are as strong as the bonds soldiers make on the battle fields.  This TRENZA experience allowed me to be surrounded by a group of strong women who acted as a support system and professional pipeline. What remains your favorite TRENZA memory?: My favorite memory is the first retreat in the organization's history, which took place at Liz Camacho's house. It was great! It was the first retreat we had and it proved to be successful as everyone left with a greater sense sisterhood and connection when we left that Sunday. We bonded over cooking dinner, watching novellas and talking about what TRENZA meant to us. My favorite alumni memory is when all of us decided to get together for our 10th year reunion. We made the trip up to CAL just in time for the homecoming game and the festivities that followed. We had a great time strolling down memory lane.

The ladies of TRENZA participated in an Alzheimer walk on September 11 which took place in San Francisco. It was an awesome experience to know that we were making a difference because it can affect anyone at any time.We took great pictures like the jumping one in the air although it was difficult it took us about three to four times before it was perfect. As we walked we were able to see the beautiful water and the bridge. At the end we felt accomplished and realized the impact.

Advice for the sophomore/junior class (who aren't freshmen but aren'tseniors yet either)?Sophomores and Juniors … you’re in the midst of the big ride. Goes by faster than you think. If there was anything I could have done differently in my junior or sophomore years would I? …the answer is always the same …no … I had a blast. It was a good balance of social outings and academic rigor. However the one regret that my fellow comadres and I often agree upon was not studying abroad. We had our “plan” or “path” that was going to get us where we were supposed to be. So we stuck to it and thought studying abroad would derail our career train. Let me tell you, it’s good to have a plan, but often times things don’t turn out the way you imaginedand your train gets derailed for different reasons but you still wind up at your destination ... detours are a good thing sometimes… the “plan” often times has twists and turns.  I did get a chance to travel plenty once I graduated however, studying abroad is a unique opportunity sojuniors and sophomores if you get a chance to study abroad … do it.

“SKANKY” RETREATThis year’s fall retreat was held at Portola Redwoods. I was on one of the last cars to

arrive, so I missed the first few hours of the retreat. However, from what I heard it seems I missed an unintended scenic trip to the beach and thankfully, a mob attack by some very vicious mosquitoes, who returned the following morning. A few unforgettable memories of the retreat will definitely be the ride to the Redwoods, where we experienced some crazy thick fog, that reminded me of a really bad horror movie. Another thing that I will never forget was hearing that Rene’s break’s failing, fortunately everyone was ok and made it safely to camp. A certain “Skanky Skunk” will also not be forgotten, that skunk was determined to eat our muffins and was not intimidated by our many attempts to scare it away. Thankfully the quick thinking of some Trenzudas got rid of the ballsy skunk. However, all those memories do not compare to the awesome bonding we had around the campfire. That will be an experience that I will forever cherish. I feel the retreat was a success and has made me appreciate the open-heartedness, sincerity and inspiration that I get from all of the Trenzudas. We are all beautiful, strong and independent women. Thank you Martha for all your hard work in planning the retreat, in addition to anyone else who was involved. Thank you Rene for keeping your cool and your family for making sure we all got home. Lastly, thank you everyone for being yourselves and I look forward to many more fond memories to come.

Montzerrat GarciaSanta Ana, CAPsychology and Chicano StudiesThe best part of being a freshman is meeting new people and getting involved in organizations. Also, because everything and all the environment is basically new, one advantage is t...hat I get to explore all the different restaurants and new places to hang out with my new friends. The worst part of being a freshman is getting used to the new bittersweet freedom and being homesick. Also, going through several culture shocks is the worst part about being in a completely different environment.hmm... I pulled a classical freshman accident since I got lost on my way to my Psych 1 discussion and was 25 minutes late. Also, with the unleveled sidewalks here at Berkeley, I've tripped way too many times as I walk to class. Luckily I haven't caught anyone laughing at my clumsiness. Why TRENZA? Since the first meeting I felt that the friendships between the Trenzudas were sincere and spontaneous! I love the environment that TRENZA creates for its members, but also that it gives back to the community through community service events. Lastly, I just feel very close to home and to my roots as I gradually become part of the TRENZA family. :]

Friday night, all the Trenzudas were looking more lovely than ever, as we all waited at the Roachdale parking lot, for what was to be a fun, and CRAZY NIGHT!!! The whole week, this was the event that everyone was looking foward to...it was no other than our traditional SAKE BOMBING with the gentlemen of HERMANOS UNIDOS!!! It was my first time going and couldn't wait to try my first sake sip!!! My stomach churned with anticipation before we even got to the place (FYI: I made sure I ate a decent hot meal before the event =])!!! Before heading to the location, we had several, fun, creative activities with Hermanos, as an icebreaker before the big night ahead of us. From holding apples with our mouths to getting down and dirty with popping balloons, the night was definitely off to a good start!

Everyone was hella excited as we went up the street to our sake bombing location. Within seconds (so it felt) we were all seated and ready for sake bombing!! ichi...ni...san...SAKE BOMB!!...as soon as the chant was said, the night had begun!!In only minutes, we all felt amazing and laughter spread among the room! It was an excellent turnout and a bomb ass atmosphere! After consuming the last of the sake, we all headed out. But the night was not over, ahead still waited an after party at the Heights!! This night was a night to remember, if you weren't there, you missed out!!!
