Iventured to Perth for its sale earlier this month and, as you can see from Bruno Cannatelli’s

photo spreads near the tail of this issue, the mood appeared to be fairly relaxed (apart from a couple of fractious yearlings putting on a show for the crowd!).

Encouragingly, Perth – like the Gold Coast, Sydney and New Zealand sales before it – remained fairly steady in terms of averages and there are clearly signs of a return to ‘prosperity’.

However, the clearance rate was nothing to write home to mum about and was a worrying aspect of the auction.

Could it be – as Rick Connolly suggests in our new ’10 minutes’ feature on page 18 – that stud

masters will again have to take a long, hard look at stallion fees.

That said, the ‘form’ of stallions such as Fastnet Rock, Stratum and Snitzel bodes well for Easter, while the first season sires have found plenty of admirers too (Magnus topped the Inglis Sydney Classic with his $170,000, but he’s got some good company among the first time sellers).

Speaking of newcomers, take note of some of the vendors for the Adelaide sale (page 22) – a couple of relative start ups – who are determined to succeed and prepared to work for it.

Now it’s off to Melbourne before the show moves to Adelaide in mid-March.

Stratum isn’t the first Golden Slipper winner to sire a Slipper winner in his own right.

Far from it … Baguette, Danzero, Flying Spur and Marscay all repeated the dose, while Vain, Marauding and Todman managed to ‘double up’.However, Stratum is poised to become the first Golden Slipper winning stallion to produce a pair of Slipper winners with his first two crops if Straight Gold gets his way.

THERE WAS A LOT TO like about the flashy chestnut colt being offered by Widden Stud at last year’s Gold Coast Magic Millions. A strapping kid with everything in the right places

and clearly one of the highlights of the famous nursery’s 30 plus draft.

He certainly caught the eye of George Moore Bloodstock which went to $300,000 to secure the colt by Stratum from the stakes winning mare Golden Delicious.

It was the most paid for a Stratum on the Gold Coast in 2010 and the second highest at the Magic Millions overall.

Underlining the ‘punt’ was the fact that when George Moore Bloodstock threw up the digit at $300k, Stratum only had a couple of winners – at Muswellbrook and in Tassie – plus a couple of stakes horses.

Still, all would be forgiven when one of those stakes horses – a filly by the name of Crystal Lily – came out and won the Golden Slipper a few months later.

And it’s been clear sailing ever since with Stratum now one of the hottest properties in Australia, assisted largely by half a dozen black type winners including Australia Day stakes winner Éclair Mystic.

Sure, one Canterbury swallow doesn’t make a Slipper, but the relative ease of Straight Gold’s victory at the Sydney track on 4 February would certainly indicate he’s in there swinging.

The Hawkes stable was definitely impressed with Straight Gold’s first outing and stable representative Michael Hawkes was glowing in his praise post race: “It was a lovely debut … he has a lot to learn but he is a lovely colt.

“He is raw and when he matures and keeps improving he will be a nice horse.”

Corey Brown, who had an absolute armchair ride, was also clearly impressed as the colt toyed with his rivals before racing away to score by almost five lengths: “He was really impressive, he jumped well and travelled beautifully … I think they’ve got their hands on a pretty good one.”

Racenet declared it “one of the most emphatic two year old wins of the season”, not discounting the displays of ruling Slipper favourites Sepoy (two stakes wins from as many

starts) and 2YO Magic Millions Classic flyer Karuta Queen.

Interestingly, Hilton Head – the only one of Straight Gold’s siblings to race thus far – also won impressively on debut, winging home at Doomben as a winter 2YO, but has shown very little since.

Anyone who attended the 1977 Golden Slipper meet is highly unlikely to forget to the performance of Luskin Star that day: arguably the most dominant performance in the race’s history.

Now, while the legendary Danehill has figured in 11 of the last 17 Slippers, Luskin Star has certainly made his presence felt too in the world’s richest juvenile event.

While his 30 stakes winners in Australia included a host of speedy 2YOs, none actually emulated his Slipper victory,

but his Reisling Slipper Trial winner Bold Promise, did go on to produce the 1996 Slipper winner Merlene.

But it’s hardly surprising that their mum, Golden Delicious, is capable of throwing a winner or two.

We all know that one plus one never equals two in the breeding industry, but Golden Delicious was one of those gutsy performers who never knew she was beat: all up, 13 wins, 11 placings and almost half a million from 40 outings. Buy a lot of apples with those kind of horses in your back paddock!

Initially trained out west by Jim Taylor (who also put the original polish on Hay List), Golden Delicious would also win on debut – her first two in fact – before fading in the Karrakatta Plate-G2.

Still, she would finish in the money at her next 17 outings including stakes victories at Moonee Valley and Belmont. All up, Golden Delicious would score at black type level on five occasions and it’s hardly surprising that her owners – Widden – have

given the mare every opportunity at stud (Golden Delicious produced a Fastnet Rock filly last August and, not surprisingly, was returned to Stratum in late October).

A daughter of Made of Gold, the pedigree is relatively ‘light’ for a few generations, but other family standouts – Salinger winner Ancient Song and Villiers victor Dances on Waves – had speed to burn and it’s unlikely we’ll be backing Golden Delicious progeny in a Melbourne Cup any time soon.

Besides, first things first … there’s a Slipper to worry about and you could hardly blame Team Hawkes, Widden and co. for thinking they have a real chance of putting the Gold into Golden.

THAT’S UNDOUBTEDLY what Sue Suduk had in mind when she sent her Group One winning mare Shindig

to Champion Sire Danehill for her first four seasons at stud.

After all, Shindig was one classy mare: a daughter of Straight Strike and half sister to three other stakes winners, she did the family proud with eight wins and nearly half a million in stakes, highlighted by her Coolmore Classic-G1 victory at Rosehill in track record time … a benchmark which remains today.

The first Danehill mating resulted in a city winner of three (Miz Nicholls) while the second, Fiammarosa, was twice stakes placed in Sydney.

Third time lucky though and Shinzig would prove to be the pick of the litter.

Campaigned across the Tasman after winning on debut at Randwick and winning the Schweppes-G3 at Caulfield (defeating Not A Single Doubt), Shinzig would seriously test the mettle of New Zealand’s finest … running 5-time Group One winner Darci Brahma to a nostril in the Waikato Draught-G1, a third to 3-time Group One winner Xcellent in the Mudgway-G1, a third in the Otaki Maori-G1 and a fourth in the Thorndon Mile-G1 (beaten just over a length) behind Sir Slick.

Back home, Shinzig would run a powerhouse third behind Tears I Cry in the Emirates Stakes-G1

on the final day of the Cup carnival, but Group One glory was waiting just around the corner.

Racing first up in the time honoured CF Orr Stakes-G1 over 1400m at Caulfield, Shinzig was facing 12 previous Group One winners: arguably the toughest Orr in history.

Shinzig prevailed in a nail biter and shortly after was retired to stud at Eliza Park in Victoria. A sound decision when you consider that the Orr had been won previously by Redoute’s Choice and Lonhro (also out of a Straight Strike mare) and the fact that Shinzig’s year younger brother – the stakes winner Strada – had been retired to the Hunter Valley a year previously and covered a three figure book.

The other lynchpin – certainly not lost on the folk at Eliza Park (or anyone for that matter) – is the reputation of Danehill sons at stud.

Sure, there’s a lot of Danehill ‘bulls’ that haven’t fired a shot, but research shows Shinzig is in with a better than even chance of succeeding at stud.

For instance, Danehill has seven sons standing in Australia that won Group One races at 1600m or less … including Shinzig.

Six of the seven have runners: Redoute’s Choice, Flying Spur, Danzero, Danasinga, Exceed And Excel and Fastnet Rock.

All six have produced Group One winners in their own right.

The seventh? Well, Shinzig has his first crop of yearlings now appearing at major sales around the country, including nine appearing at the Inglis Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale and a further 12 at the Magic Millions Adelaide affair.

Highlights among the Melbourne crew (and reflective of the quality of mare directed his way) include filly from Champion Filly and VRC Oaks winner Northwood Plume [Lot 159], a half brother to the Group placed Innovation from the Group One winning mare Chlorophyll [Lot 470], plus the well bred filly from M’Lady’s Manor, dam of the promising God’s Own juvenile Manor Lady [Lot 588].

The story’s pretty much the same in Adelaide with a half sister to Group placed Karalee from Group Two winner Moralee [Lot 45], a colt from Myxaar, a half sister to Doncaster hero Triple Honour [Lot 49], a half brother to the multiple stakes placed Storm Brewing from a half sister to dual Group One winner Herocity [Lot 8] and a cracking colt from Grand Lodge mare Lady Lucielle, closely related to South African Group One winner Strategic News [Lot 245].

One of them just might give Danehill seven from seven!

Eliza Park will consign its largest ever draft to the Inglis Melbourne Premier with 60 yearlings entered for the sale.

Highlights include a Fastnet Rock filly from the outstandingly bred Lady’s Light

[Lot 73], a Bel Esprit sister to stakes winning filly Peach Tree [Lot 3] and a Magnus half brother to Group One winner and leading first season sire Red Dazzler [Lot 339].

It doesn’t seem that long ago that the affable Rick Connolly was reading out the voluminous Conditions of Sale to a crowd of one in Inglis’ cavernous auditorium at Newmarket. Now Rick is one of the true power brokers of Australia’s buying bench.

So Rick, how did you get started in the business?

Through a chance meeting with Mr

Theo Green at the races when I was 14 years old. Mr Green was very much a mentor to me. He introduced me to Mr Jack Ingham and Trevor Lobb where I spent a few weeks at Crown Lodge during my school holidays: working in the stables and also in the office. Upon leaving school Trevor introduced me to Glenn Burrows, who was Bloodstock Manager at William Inglis at the time, where I was fortunate enough to be offered a position in the pedigree department.

You were with William Inglis for 10 years and its pedigree department has almost as many

successful two legged graduates as yearlings: Trevor Lobb, Kieran Moore, John Hutchinson and Vin Cox to name but a few. How important was your ‘grounding’ at Inglis?

Inglis was a tremendous break for me whereby I was introduced to many, many people … trainers, breeders, agents etcetera. Learning the ins and outs of the auction ring and processes of grading pedigrees/conformation was a great experience. Under the tutelage of Glenn Burrows, Reg Inglis and of course, the ‘Boss’ – Mr John Inglis – taught me respect of the game, values: and that your word is your bond.

Q & A

The move to Patinack Farm was a fairly big

step and your two and a half years with the group was mainly in its formative stages. What do you consider to be the most important role you played at Patinack?

My move from Woodlands/Ingham Bloodstock to Patinack Farm was something that I thought long and hard about. Patinack was brand new and what Nathan Tinkler was intending to do was very exciting. Due to my experience at Inglis’ and Woodlands, I was able to help tighten the structure and development of what is now a huge organization, encompassing over 1100 horses with global racing and breeding in over six countries.

You clearly had a bright future at Patinack …

why the decision to hang out your own shingle?

Leaving Patinack Farm was a mutual step forward for both myself and the farm. Nathan Tinkler and myself are very good friends and I still act on behalf of Patinack at all the major sales, as well as other consultancy roles. In a way it was me turning full circle: I enjoy people and am very keen to help potential and new owners into what is a wonderful sport to be a part of. And being based at Randwick gives me plenty of opportunity to go to the track.

You’ve played a sizeable role on the Gold Coast and in New Zealand this year spending some

$3 million on 23 yearlings at the Magic Millions and a further $NZ5.2 million on 18 youngsters at Karaka.

I thought that the Karaka Premier catalogue was one of the best (on type) group of horses New Zealand Bloodstock have assembled for some years. Of all the yearlings from that sale, I thought the Zabeel half-sister to Velocitea (from Cat Schmea) was gorgeous: such a wonderful, fluid mover with the presence of a Group One filly. In a similar mold was the Encosta De Lago filly from Mrs Squillionaire who had all the qualities I strive to find when inspecting yearlings. Good eye, wide nostril, well balanced and an aura of invincibility. Magic Millions had a strong group of horses and my favourite would be by Patinack Farm’s first season sire in Husson from Regal County. Typical of the Hussons he is a very forward who looks ready to put a saddle on now. Hussons, on the whole, look to be very racy sorts.

You’ve seen and studied racing in many other countries : what do you perceive to be

Australian racing’s greatest strengths?

Racing in Australia is the best in the world. Prizemoney, which in NSW is soon to be dramatically increased, together with various breeders’ bonus schemes helps the owner get a better chance of a return on their intial outlay … quickly. After all, you can buy a horse in January and by Christmas there’s the possibility of watching your colours go around. With a lot of overseas racing, the training techniques tend to require the owner to be very patient.

You appear to have stuck largely with the tried

and true stallions – with the exception of Casino Prince and a couple of Hussons – any other first season sires caught your eye at this stage?

Obviously the Ifraaj’s have caught everyone’s attention in New Zealand. They are very mature looking horses and you can understand why he has been so successful in the Northern hemisphere with his first crop of 2YOs. Casino Prince leaves a quality individual and he appears the most likely to become Champion First Season sire.

Sales are again down marginally and that

works particularly well for you, especially in New Zealand where the Aussie dollar is so strong. Do you think the buyers ‘window’ will still be open for a couple of years?

I believe the top end of the market has been wound right back. Million dollar horses was becoming a regular occurrence at most Premier sales. Now that the market has adjusted, I would think stallion masters will also have to adjust service fees.

Inglis’ recent purchase of Bloodstock.com.au is fairly indicative of where technology is going

and, specifically, how it relates to the thoroughbred industry. Do you anticipate many differences to how you currently conduct your business to meet the new decade’s technological advancements?

Information technology has come a very long way in the racing industry with online bidding at auctions, viewing horses parading via Sirecam), live broadcast of the sales … all have been a positive. The industry’s heart and soul is information: whether it’s the latest trackwork gallops or pedigree updates, people thrive on information. I see the possibility of iPad applications becoming the next big thing.

Buyers don’t normally flock to Adelaide for the ‘names’.

THAT’S NOT TO SAY that the 2011 Magic Millions Adelaide Yearling Sale catalogue

doesn’t have its fair share of ‘attractions’. After all, there are half relations to Group One winners Above Deck, Ambala and Blevvo, plus there’s a Magnus colt from Group One winner Lycra and a colt by Rock of Gilbraltar from another Group One winner in Tartan Tights.

There’s also a first crop Shinzig from Moralee and an Exceed And Excel from Regal Kiss – both mares winning up to Group Two level.

On top of that there is an incredibly diverse range of stallions represented: Lonhro, Bel Esprit, Dehere, home town hero Blevic, Dash For Cash, NZ champ Pins, More Than Ready and Stratum (who have locked up the past three Golden Slippers between them), Falvelon, Tale of the Cat and the truly outstanding Testa Rossa who weighs in with 11 entries.

On top of that, you have the up and comers such as Magnus (who topped the Inglis Classic), Dylan Thomas, Hidden Dragon, Lion Heart, Domesday, Purrealist, Snippetson and Zizou … to name but a few.

Yes, it’s a very balanced book and some of those pages will produce big money.

Indeed, the Magic Millions crew is quick to point out that “the three horses which have sold for $300,000 or more during the history of the sale all raced to black type level.”

(Certainly not a fact that many other auctions can claim!).

That said, Adelaide is more about types than black type. Let us rephrase … an Adelaide catalogue won’t contain the same number of bluebloods as say a Gold Coast, Classic or a Melbourne, but what Adelaide has shown repeatedly is that it’s capable of producing horses that attain their own black type.

And, relatively speaking, with a similar rate of success to that of its competitors. >>

is right up to Group One class and one can safely assume this is one trainer who be poring through the Adelaide catalogue fairly closely.

But Torio’s Quest is not the only Adelaide graduate to make it big on the Gold Coast’s day of days.

Augusta Proud failed to reach her modest reserve at the 2008 chapter (fortunately for her breeders) and less than nine months later had added over a $1 million to her coffers by taking out the 2YO Magic Millions Classic.

In the same year Augusta Proud failed to find a new home, Trevenson Park sold a Statue of Liberty filly from their grand old mare Lady Violet for just $72,500 (a year later her Elvstroem colt would sell in Melbourne for $110,000).

The Adelaide filly – named Tempest Tost – would win the Magic Millions 3YO Trophy and a tick over $760,000, while the half brother has banked just $9,000.

Just a few of the many good reasons buyers come to shop in Adelaide (not to mention the pin hookers who purchased a Gonski colt for $15,000 at last year’s sale before topping the MM Horses in Training affair when the then 2YO was knocked down for $180,000).



Bottom line, you don’t have to pay through the roof to give yourself a shot at racecourse glory.

A case in point is the very nifty Torio’s Quest who was knocked down for just $15,000 at the 2009 Magic Millions Adelaide sale.

Breeder and vendor, Bowness Stud, were probably a tad disappointed given that he was from the first crop of Danehill stallion Oratorio, who stood at a fee of $33,000 the year their colt was conceived.

Sydney bloodstock agent, Darrell Ible, on the other hand, obviously considered him great value and, suggested to his client – Bert Vieira – that he put his hand up.

Needless to say, four wins (from five starts) and $685,140 later, Darrell is on Bert’s Christmas card list.

Racing out of the Brett Partelle stable, Torio’s Quest was brought along quietly, registering a maiden win on debut at Newcastle last September.

Just four months later, Torio’s Quest lined up in the $1m Gold Coast Magic Millions 3YO Guineas and Bob’s your uncle. From $15k to $685k … great game ain’t it?

Accomplished author and thoroughbred tragic, LISSA OLIVER, caught up recently with highly respected bloodstock agent Dermot Farrington and his offsider, Mick Flanagan, discussing the thoroughbred scene in both the UK and Australia.

IWAS LUCKY ENOUGH TO arrange to meet bloodstock agent Dermot Farrington and his assistant Mick Flanagan for a coffee while

they took time out from their busy schedule. The Naas office of Farrington Bloodstock, just 15 minutes from the County Kildare farm that has been in the Farrington family for five

generations, is largely just a base to touch whenever time allows. For Dermot and Mick, the ‘office’ is phone and sales ring: a life that seems to suit them both perfectly.

After graduating from UCD with an agricultural diploma he joined the renowned Darley Flying Start programme and graduated in 2008, working in France, Kentucky and South Africa before joining Peter Doyle.

“When Dermot offered me a job I jumped at it,” Mick says, “we get on well and we’re forever playing tricks on each other!” Mick is a key asset to the business, providing an additional wealth of knowledge in every aspect of the industry. “I’ve a good knowledge of both

the Southern and Northern Hemispheres and the better breeders and trainers,” Mick admits, “and I have a lot of good contacts. Contacts are key to any business.”

The great thing about the bloodstock industry is that no aspect of it can really be

called work. It may involve much long hours, hard graft and sacrifice, but it’s a lifestyle choice, a passion, not just an occupation. The global success of Farrington Bloodstock lies at the very heart of that passion. We’re here for a coffee, but a relaxed Dermot and Mick sit back and discuss horses like

family, holding court for well over an hour with their talk taking us on a journey from Ireland to Australia, via Kentucky and South Africa: to name but two ‘stopovers’.

world’s finest window dresser. The racehorse, the finished product, is the number one ingredient in the success of Dermot’s business. He buys yearlings, but chiefly in pursuit of his business of selling proven racehorses. When he laments about British prize money, he acknowledges that it’s only a secondary consideration … the primary reward being in selling a winning animal, generally to Asia.

“The most expensive commodity in racing is the racehorse,” Dermot points out. “When a good racehorse is sold, that’s when the client gets paid – the rewards are huge. I am always amazed at what people are willing to pay for them.”

Dermot describes Australian horses as “the most expensive in the world” and repeatedly says how difficult it is to buy at the Easter Sales and Magic Millions, yet his purchases include champion two-year-old Bel Esprit, bought for just $9,000 and earning $2 million on the racecourse, while Macedon Lady, a $22,000 purchase, went on to win the Group One 1000 Guineas. Then there’s Ike’s Dream, track record holder for the mile at Randwick: a $45,000 yearling who went on to win a Group One and over $1 million in stakes.

Top filly, Rare Insight, defeated no less a horse than Choisir in the Group Two Stan Fox Stakes, before meeting with a career-ending accident. Another successful filly for Dermot was ill-fated Group One performer

Only Words, regarded by John Hawkes as one of the best fillies he ever trained. Dermot seems to be blessed when it comes to top-level performers purchased at the lower end of the market and he bought last season’s Group One New Zealand 2000 Guineas hero, Tell A Tale, for just $40,000 as a yearling.

Dermot’s love affair with the Australian sales began 16 years ago, when he settled in Sydney after spells in the Hunter Valley and Melbourne. A graduate of the acclaimed Irish National Stud course, it was mentor Michael Osborne who set him on track.

“I was offered placements in America or Australia,” Dermot recalls, “and I opted for Australia, as there weren’t a lot of Irish guys going over there and it offered something a bit fresh. I fell in love with the place, it’s a great country, and I stayed for nine years. I moved back to Ireland seven years ago, but I spend three months each year in Australia.”

Prior to his permanent move to the Southern Hemisphere, Dermot had also worked in France and at Kildangan Stud in Ireland, so he was taking with him a wealth of knowledge gained at some of the industry’s top academies.

Dermot began his career as a private agent to Macedon Lodge racing stables and has never looked back. Neither

have his clients. “I still have the same clients now as I had when I

started … in fact, the first yearling I bought at the Easter sales was for guys I still buy for.”

Although Dermot often buys Australian yearlings for European owners, he would very rarely purchase an Australian horse to send across to Europe. Most of the clients he buys for are Australian. “The prizemoney is so good in Australia: one of the highest in the world and there’s no reason for them to want to race in Europe.”

If there’s one gripe Dermot has, it’s the cost of training: “The training fees are higher in Australia. I think they’re too dear … they should be able to do it for the same cost as Irish trainers. I’m talking about the middle of the market guys.

“That said, the system of training is very different. In Ireland we’d send a horse to our trainer, Paddy Prendergast, in January and we wouldn’t see it again until the sales at the end of the season, in November or December. In Australia, a horse will be divided between a pre-trainer and the trainer. It might spend six weeks with its trainer coming in to a race, then go back to a pre-trainer. I haven’t done the maths, but it’s possible it balances out.”

The prize money, however, doesn’t balance, with horses racing for as little as £1,000 ($A1,600) in Britain and a far more healthy minimum of €7,500 in Ireland ($A10,000), but even that in no way matches the $60,000 on offer at Randwick, for example.

This is an important element in Dermot’s business, as Farrington Bloodstock is fairly

unique in that: “we like to be self-sufficient as possible.”

This means keeping a band of broodmares at the farm in Ballymore Eustace and five mares in Australia. Some of the yearlings go to the sales, but many are raced by Farrington Bloodstock with the ultimate intention of selling them on after a win. This is a practise that works well for Dermot,

with top European racehorse and now stallion, Amadeus Wolf, being a prime example. In Australia, he’s particularly looking forward to three fillies due to reappear shortly, My Emotion (Group Two winner) among them.

When selling proven racehorses, the market place is often dependent on currency values. “There’s currently a big

European advantage, given the status of the US dollar,” Dermot points out. “Hong Kong dollars are not getting as much punch in Australia now and Ireland is beginning to come out of the woodwork when it comes to selling to Hong Kong. Australian horses are the most expensive in the world – when a horse wins on a Saturday at Randwick it’s worth a lot of dough … a

LOT of dough. We’re trying to sell to Hong Kong all the time and we’re looking all the time, but often we cannot buy the Australian horses.”

With the market in racehorses so strong and active, how do the Australian yearling sales compare to Ireland? “I don’t find them cheap,” Dermot says, “the sales companies do a very good job. When you think of the thousands of foals born each year, the likes of the Easter Sale and Magic Millions get it down to 600 yearlings on offer.

“They (the auction company) have already done the sorting for us, but consequently the horses who get in to those sales are very expensive. There would be a large number in that line-up that I’ve no chance of getting.

“In Europe, you’d know the obvious ones that will fetch a high price, but in Australia even the ones that didn’t seem that obvious would be going for high prices. My first year at the Easter Sale I had $100,000 to spend. I found it very demoralising, I couldn’t get anything. In the end I got a very nice filly for $50,000 and it actually worked out very well … but it’s not easy.”

Dermot puts this down to the truly select nature of the Australian sales: “In Keeneland there are books and books; at Tattersalls you have Books 1 and 2 and so on, but in Australia the two select sales are select. They have five selectors going round the studs and you get used to the type of horse they pick.

“The Magic Millions always had very sharp yearlings, but in recent years they’ve had more middle-distance types, too. There’s a saying – you shouldn’t be in business if you’re not working at Easter! It’s the best sale, but it’s the toughest.”

It might be the toughest, but Dermot and Mick find them easier to work at by comparison to European counterparts.

“The yearlings arrive in at Australian sales so early,” Dermot enthuses, “they could be there a week before the sale, so you’ve plenty of time to look at them and see the entire catalogue.

“The local agents are a bit ahead of us, they’ve been out to look at the yearlings at the studs, but I’ve found they don’t always show themselves so well at home. A public auction is the nearest thing you can get to the racecourse, with the crowds and the noise, it brings out the best and the worst in them. And in Australia we’re very lucky … we have so much time. In Europe and America we’ll divide the book between us and meet in the middle and decide, but we both look at everything at the Easter Sale.”

within the first two minutes of viewing a horse, but they’ll often go back for a second look: “First impressions are important,

but you’ve got to give them the time,” Mick agrees,

“sometimes they don’t show themselves so well the second time and they’re off the

list.” The list can begin with 500 individuals, but gets whittled down to around 30. “The list is based on physical appearance,” Dermot says, “rather than pedigree.”

The list of clients, however, is better whittled down even further! “In an ideal world you’d want no more than four clients to buy for,” Dermot recommends, “it’s an ideal number. Every client gets the same list. If there’s a conflict of interest, let them at it. I always tell my clients these are the horses I’m buying and who for, and if one is prepared to go up to $100,000 and another up to $150,000 for the same horse, I have to bid on behalf of the highest bidder. In general there’s never any conflict, my clients are from different spectrums, with different requirements.”

Dermot hasn’t noticed any trend in Australia towards clients wanting sharp early two-year-olds and the demand remains for racehorses. “No owner or trainer wants to wait too long with a horse, but a horse that can go on and win at three and four is still the aim,” he says. That’s very much the case with the Irish horses he purchases for export to Australia. It’s here that his knowledge and experience of the Australian racing scene comes to the fore. “You can have some luck with small horses, but in general the Australians like them to be a bit bigger, more developed, with more bone. A lot of bone. They love to have the European pedigrees, but

they’re very specific on type.” It’s this same type of animal that proves the most popular with the Hong Kong and other Asian markets, too.

Once again, the biggest returns come through the end product and a trend Dermot has noticed developing in Australia is the search for future stallions: “There’s not a great foal market in Australia and only a little bit of pin-hooking … not as much as in Ireland and the UK. But I’ve noticed in recent years, at the Easter Sale in particular, more people trying to buy future stallions. That would be the biggest change I’ve seen.”

Although Europeans are becoming more accustomed to seeing Australian horses competing in their top races and reverse shuttle stallions such as Encosta de Lago are making their mark from just a single European crop, Dermot feels the practical restraints make it unlikely for Australian mares to be bred to Northern Hemisphere times for the purpose of selling yearlings across the water. “I can see European mares being shuttled to Australian stallions,” he predicts, “Darley is already doing it. It would make good commercial sense to cover shuttle mares to the Northern

Hemisphere season, without transporting the stallions.”

Comparing Ireland and Australia, Dermot is realistic: “It’s the same

business. But Australia didn’t have the big recession, their banking business is firm. They have no over-production problem and a great release

Burnewang North Pastoral has come a long way in a short time, albeit assisted by the

fact its principal, Cathy Hains, hails from one of Australia’s most famous breeding families!

Although this is only the third time Burnewang North at Rochester has hung out its shingle at the Melbourne Premier, last year’s seven offerings averaged a memorable $117,100 and the mission of the farm is to consistently offer high standard by presenting only the best-conformed and best-pedigreed yearlings each year.

Coincidentally, Burnewang North has seven in its 2011 consignment which are by sires which are a mix of ‘proven and promising’ and indeed, the dams of six of the seven yearlings are stakes performers.

Those among the seven which are sure to garner plenty of attention are the first foals of two young American stakeswinning mares, Les Ry Leigh [Lot 85] and Chelsey’s Image [Lot 464].

In the meantime, the Burnewang North crew are closely watching the progress of ‘graduates’ that have now reached the racetrack with three of their ‘select’ first crop now winners – in three different countries!

Fairly safe to say that astute buyers will be beating a path to the Burnewang North stable door at Oaklands Junction.

Bill Crabb has had a lifetime involvement with thoroughbreds and his family’s farm (Tudor

Vale Stud) stood both the highly successful sire Geiger Counter [27 Australian stakes winners] and Group One winner Euclase [sire of La Baraka], a full brother to Rubiton.

Bill has pulled back the throttle a tad and sells just a handful of yearlings every year, but with Crabb & Sons, it’s always been about quality in preference to quantity.

And Bill certainly has one to offer at this year’s Magic Millions Adelaide Sale that has quality written all over him: Lot 26, a bay colt by promising young sire Snippetson from the Euclase mare Lin O’Dee.

To say that the Crabbs are familiar with this family is something of an understatment – they have bred and raced three generations with Lin O’Dee,

her dam Balmoral Gold and granddam Amapura producing 21 winners between them from 24 to race.

Lin O’Dee, who won four of her own – including one down the straight at Flemington – has already produced two stakes horses in 9-time winner The Big Gee (Adelaide winner and multiple Singapore winner for Stephen Burridge) and the stakes placed 2YO Go Lizzy.

The yearling on offer here could well be the third to add black type to Lin O’Dee’s resume.

“valve in Asia. They do need to stabilise. Last year was the most expensive Easter Sale, but a better year. It got heated this year, but the Magic Millions was the easiest to buy at, off high service fees. Those fees are now cut back to a more realistic level.

“The biggest problem in Ireland is prize money and it’s worse in the UK. The Racing Post Bonus is a great incentive, but it needs to be more inclusive. The breeder should have a chance to get his €500 back. From the breeder/owner point of view the schemes in Australia really, really work and add a significant amount of money to the pool, but the Racing Post Bonus doesn’t go far enough. Guys won’t continue to pay to be in the scheme … they took a good bit of persuading to join in the first place. The big bonuses in Australia are massive, I can’t understand why we’re not copying this.

“Owning racehorses is the furthest thing from a hobby,” Dermot argues, “just look at the amount of people with horses in training. A lot of them want returns. A breeder takes a horse to the yearling sales, doesn’t sell, so puts it in training – it’s the furthest thing from a hobby. In the UK, if you’re not competing at the elite level you’ve no chance. It’s the most competitive racing and the worst prize money. If the UK finally get it right, and Ireland gets it wrong, we’d lose a lot.”

None of which deters Dermot from his enthusiastic approach

to his agency: “My plans for the future are to continue! … try and race a lot more horses in partnerships. We’ve got seven in training in Australia right now. I think the Chinese market will come through … even just wealthy Chinese owners buying horses to race in Singapore.

“When they complete their racecourses it will be a big market. I want to be in the position to have enough colts in training for that market. The key is to pick the right people, be honest and pick nice horses. There’s no strict angle … always think outside the box.”

Although it was primarily a wheat and cattle farm, Robert Wren and his wife purchased their property

18 months ago, kicking off with four weanlings that were purchased from the Sydney sales.

Such was Robert’s selection process, two of the youngsters were sold within a fortnight of coming home, while the remaining two are now among the highlights of this year’s Adelaide Magic Millions.

Both of them fillies and both first foals – they are the only yearlings in the sale by exciting first season sires Wonderful

World and Husson, ensuring plenty of buyers will be hoofing it Robert’s boxes. [Lot 270, from the Strategic mare Plath] and Husson [Lot 291, from the Canny Lad mare Sempervirant].

“Sires that haven’t had progeny reach the track are appealing to the buying public and usually trigger the most interest,” Robert points out.

Enthusiastic about his farm and the yearlings he has for sale, Robert jokes that he is more than ready to sacrifice a proportion of the wheat and cattle to make way for the horses!

Big hopes that Son of Caesar will make an appearance on Magic Million Adelaide Cup day, but for the moment the pair are concentrating on selling the five Squillani Park yearlings which will be offered up at the

Morphettville Sales complex.

Asked to select a couple from the draft, the Falvelon colt from Bay Breeze [Lot 160] and the Churchill Downs colt – the first foal of a half sister to multiple Group One winner Scenic Shot [Lot 104] get the nod due to athleticism and pedigree, but also keep your eye out for another first foal [Lot 18], by Churchill Downs out the VERY well related Kondari.

PS. It turns out they sold Nancy Eleanor and then, on a gut feeling, bought her back before Phelan Ready performed. Perhaps some of the Squillani luck could rub off on you.

It’s quite a story.

As a kid, Tony didn’t have much in the way of a racing background. Well, no more than most baby boomers to whom memories of Tulloch and Todman will linger longer than a Justin Bieber concert for the kids of today.

But for some reason he liked studying pedigrees. Loved pedigrees. Couldn’t get enough of them.

And he fell in love with a horse by the name of Aquanita who, ironically, is better remembered today as the ‘namesake’ for one of the nation’s largest breeding operations. But more on that in a tick.

TONY CAVANAGH IS 64 years young and doesn’t mind it one bit.

Reckons he’s never felt better – or more enthused for what may lay ahead.

And the musical connoisseur that he is, he’ll appreciate the Beatles reference that there’s a lot of people out there whom will always need him and feed him now that he’s 64.

After all, despite his many successes in the bloodstock arena, you quickly sense that the thing he’s most proud of – his greatest legacy so to speak – was the helping hand he lent to the folk who now play such an integral part of modern day racing and breeding.

Which brings us back to the original question … “where ya been, Tony?”


INDUSTRY PROFILE

declare that “Tony Cavanagh opened up the world of pedigrees to me”.

Tony was thrown in at the deep end when his boss at Wright Stephenson, Jim Fitzgerald, died 18 months after Tony started and the young buck was left to put out the catalogue on his own.

“This was years before computers of course and everything had to be done in longhand … an enormous task,” Tony remembers.

“A handful of us – Trevor Lobb was one of them – became involved in developing a new style of pedigree page … one horse to a page, black type and indentation.

“Took me nearly five years to perfect the style, but our catalogue eventually set the standard for sales in Australia.”

(In the 1970s, Tony was one of the original members of the Black Type Committee whose research determines the status of Group and Listed races in this country)

While the grounding at Wright Stephenson would prove invaluable, Tony felt it was time to up the ante of sorts and became administrator of Toolern Vale Park Stud in 1978, running the stud for a consortium which included bookie Mark Read, leading trainer Geoff Murphy and ‘colourful’ Monty Millson.

The group had a parting of the ways just 12 months later, but Read – impressed with Tony’s professionalism and industry knowledge, gave him the gig setting up Glenfern Park Stud at Romsey.

It was quite something, apart from the sizeable breeding operation, Tony helped Read purchase the Flemington stables in Fisher Parade where Bart Cummings had enjoyed so much success.

It was also where Roy Shaw trained Aquanita …

Spreading his wings, Tony established the Anthony G Cavanagh Bloodstock Agency in 1980 – thus commencing an era of stallion, broodmare and racehorse acquisitions that now stand as a monument to his acumen.

Aquanita would go on to win a Cox Plate, a Futurity, a Craiglee, a Turnbull, Emirates, Orr an Underwood and at least two interstate events that are now classified as Group Ones.

Tony was hooked and, not surprisingly, became determined to find employment in the thoroughbred world when he left school in 1964.

“There were very few opportunities in the industry in those days and so I studied land valuation and began working in the public service,” Tony recalls.

As you can imagine, Tony was thrilled … NOT!

“After four years I was able to transfer to the Racecourses’ Licences Board as assistant secretary and government tote inspector.”

Powerbrokers in the ruling state government – Sir Henry Bolte and his compadres – were avid thoroughbred folk according to Tony and “racing underwent many changes during that period, including a rationalisation which saw 15 racecourses closed down”.

Tony found himself getting frustrated with his job at the RLB but during that time he purchased his first neddy, the 6YO Manchu Prince, whom he raced in partnership with bookmaker Jack Hurry and Echuca trainer Kevin Esmonde.

“Jack had seen me at the yearling sales in my school uniform and took me under his wing.” It’s a kindness that Tony has gone on to ‘pay forward’ many times since.

Manchu Prince would win at Moonee Valley in May 1970 and two days later Tony started as a pedigree clerk at Wright Stephenson and took to it like the proverbial duck to water, eventually revolutionising the way catalogues were presented and becoming a guiding light to the thoroughbred ‘tragics’ who would follow.

Years later, respected industry commentator and Wright Stephenson graduate, Darryl Sherer, would

What was to follow reads like a who’s who of racing and breeding throughout the 80s and 90s: Sir Dapper, Cerreto, Fiesta Star, Centaine, Zephyr Bay, County, Plush, Sovereign Rocket and Favoured Bay were just some of the stallions that pay homage to Tony’s Midas touch, while a (very) short list of mares that were sold through his agency include Emancipation, Magic Flute and Aurea.

Indeed, Centaine has gone on to become one of most influential stallions to stand across the Tasman.

But if you had to pinpoint Tony to a magic moment during that period it would undoubtedly be his decision to send his Star Affair mare to Oenjay Star in the spring of 1981.

The result? Let’s Get Physical, the rocket fast grey who would capture the hearts and minds of racegoers with a turn of foot that saw him take out the Group One Blue Diamond and three other stakes races, representing the apex of the Cavanagh/Robert Smerdon association with Tony having a profound effect on the first decade of Smerdon’s training career.

“One of the advantages of having such a long education in horses is that you may remember particular details about a family, which can be quite important in an evaluation but which do not necessarily appear in the pedigree.”

In fact, such is the legacy of such background knowledge that many of the purchases made nearly 30 years ago remain relevant in a host of stakes and city winners to this day (including a trailblazing foray to South America with Ted Cockram).

Certainly one of Tony’s home-breds in the matriarch mare Bold Bridget retains considerable influence to this very day as the granddam of Staging and great granddam of Group One winners Duporth, Excites and Group winning 2YO Tickets.

Tony also has the distinction of purchasing two Derby winners: Bullwinkle (as a yearling) and Half Hennessy (as a 2YO).

Tony was at the very pinnacle of his career in the mid 80s, purchasing Huntly Lodge Stud (in partnership with close friend Chris Rogers) and, with his then wife Sue, became co-owner of the Fisher Parade stables when Mark Read determined to sell up and move to Sydney.

Fittingly, Tony soon renamed the stables – Aquanita Lodge – a loving dip of the lid to the horse that meant

so much to him growing up. Tony would also entice John Sadler from Colac to become stable trainer.

Unfortunately the law of physics played a cruel hand and Tony’s aspirations – all the hard work – crumbled with the stock market crash of 1987, placing him under a great deal of financial pressure and eventually seeing him having to sell both Huntly Lodge and his beloved Aquanita stables at a substantial loss.

(Aquanita Lodge is now a powerhouse of Australian racing with Tony’s great friend Robert Smerdon and Tony Vasil heading up the Melbourne arm, while there are also satellite stables in Brisbane and Perth).

“I was really struggling for survival … every phone call, every fax … everything became a drama. I was almost down for the count.”

Tough times at home too with three young children – Georgina (now 24), Victoria (23) and Daniel (21) and wife Sue having heavy demands on her time as head of the Melbourne Tourism Authority.

(Eventually the marriage would break up but, as Tony points out, the family remains very close).

However, Tony was determined to bounce back and one of his initiatives – the industry employers group VICTRIE – has had far reaching effects … not only in terms of the organisation’s mission, but also in relation to personnel.

“I put a group together and we met in private at Parliament House in Melbourne in 1992 … I knew we needed an effective chairman and so I put Rod Fitzroy up,” Tony adds. “Of course, he’s now chairman of the Victoria Racing Club and has proven – time and again – his effectiveness as administrator.

“A short time after VICTRIE was formed, there was a revolution of sorts with the VRC restructured (six committemen resigned) and Racing Victoria came about. I’m particularly proud of the role I played.”

Rightly so!

Another of Tony’s prominent associates is Melbourne Cup winning trainer, Dermot Weld, who took Australia by storm (and surprise) when Vintage Crop won the 1993 Melbourne Cup.

In 1995, Tony formed the International Thoroughbred Racing and Share Trust, with the support of Weld along with leading trainers David Hayes, Lee Freedman, David and Paul O’Sullivan. >>

Unfortunately, despite the early success of the scheme (which saw the O’Sullivan trained Matsqui win the Doomben Classic) the trust folded due to “the sponsors lacking the necessary passion”.

However, Tony points out that the scheme was a forerunner to a host of similar concepts in subsequent years.

One of Tony’s most enduring friendships though is with highly successful art dealer and businessman, Rod Menzies.

With a great passion for art and thoroughbreds (in which Tony sees great synergy) Menzies and Cavanagh first met in the 60s and have had a close association ever since.

“Essentially people in the art world and racing are very much alike: reasonably wealthy, they’re gamblers and appreciate the good things in life.”

In the late 90s, Menzies would ask Tony to become an advisory board member Deutscher-Menzies (now simply known as Menzies).

However, for most of the ‘noughties’ maintained a fairly low profile … well, not exactly MIA but certainly not with the omnipresence of his earlier industry involvement.

“Well, I became very focused on my children and ensuring they had every chance to succeed. It might sound clichéd but you can’t put a value on being there for your kids.

“Twelve years ago my mother was diagnosed with dementia and I immediately sat above the exercise of my father caring for my mother with an increasing involvement when my father died three years ago.

“I then became my mother’s prime carer, literally running a military-type operation.

“Let me say, you don’t come out of this unscathed. I think the key to it is to keep Dementia Patients busy.

“My mother played played piano – probably where I get my love of music – and was one of three women who dominated quiz shows in the early days of television.

The idea is to keep their minds as active as possible … and the old-time movies on Foxtel are a godsend,” Tony recalls with a smile.

“I really believe that racing – as an industry both nationally and internationally – should lend its considerable weight to the treatment of Dementia and welfare of the carers.

“After all, we have a rapidly aging population and many of the people whom we have idolised over the years may well be faced with this disease in the coming years. Dementia is indiscriminate and not something that should be swept under the carpet.

“As my daughter said recently, it’s cool to be a carer.

“Racing has supported many causes in the past and Cricket has done a marvelous job promoting cancer awareness through the McGrath Foundation.

“The projected figures for the increase of people suffering from dementia are mind boggling.”

With the passing of his mother in 2009 and the subsequent closing of many chapters, Tony is now ready to resume several other lives!

“There are so many opportunities out there, be it in Racing, Art or Music.”

(Tony’s association with Australian music is a veritable chronicle of sound over the past six decades and he is formulating a number of ideas, one of which could well find its niche during the Melbourne Cup carnival. Excuse the pun, but stay tuned for that one!).

Tony Cavanagh is happy to reflect on his achievements, but not to linger. There’s too much to do rather than sitting around on your laurels.

Prophetically, Tony summarises it all by saying: “You’ve got to know where you’ve come from to know where you are going to.”

With that in mind, you can be rest assured that Anthony G Cavanagh still has quite a bit more to add to his bucket list.

She did move from England to Adelaide as a nipper and shortly after her parents decided upon a move to the Sunshine State.

It was there that Gillian started riding at the local Southport Pony Club, commencing a love affair with horses that only continues to grow despite the ebbs and flows of an often fickle game.

Interviewed a few years back by the Gold Coast Bulletin, Gillian remarked: “You know, the older I get, the more my passion grows for horses. I understand them more every year, their quirky little traits and their funny habits.

“Some are lazy, some are natural runners and some are stubborn, but they’re all precious to me.

Gai Waterhouse is the queen of Australian racing. Amidst flair and controversy, she has carved a niche for women in an industry that still has the faint waft of Brylcreem under pork pie hats.Love her or hate her, those who follow will be marked in her shadow.Gillian Heinrich is not nearly as flamboyant, nor nearly as prone to outrageous headwear (not that we’ve become millinery experts all of a sudden!).But Gillian is every bit as dedicated and, most importantly, is more than capable of churning out winners. And, like Gai, Gillian doesn’t see success as a crusade for females … more about being the best you possibly can, regardless of gender.

“When I watch races, I watch with my heart, not with my mind. I suppose that’s a bit soft of me, but it’s the way I am.

“Even if a horse loses and he’s done his best, that’s OK by me. But if I see he hasn’t really tried, that’s a different matter …

“Every horse can have a bad day, just like humans. I’ve seen some trainers basically write off a horse as a loser because it doesn’t want to co-operate, when all that it really needs is to be understood and treated accordingly.”

It’s a creed that Gillian has based her near 20 year training career on, but a decade ago, there were only a handful of disciples.

Now everyone’s listening.

It’s fortunate then that Gillian listened to well known local trainer, Jack Waterford, whom she had been riding work for since the age of 19, when he suggested she take out a trainers’ licence in her own right.

Sage advice as it turns out, but success hasn’t arrived without the hard yards … 30 plus years of getting out of bed at 3.30am would dim the enthusiasm of most, but Gillian – it seems – is really starting to get into full stride.

Married to the highly successful builder, Hoss Heinrich, for the past 15 years, Gillian has a full stable at Bundall and the pair also has a 120ha Ponderosa – Darlington Stud – at Toowoomba.

(Where, indeed, a number of not-so-quick racehorses are living out their days as

‘nannies’. Who said, there’s no room for sentiment in this caper?)

Three seasons ago Gillian became the first woman to take out a Queensland provincial trainers’ premiership – equalling the previous record for Gold Coast winners (44) in a season.

What’s more, she started to come under notice further afield than the confines of the Coast.

Her pride and joy – All Bar One – took out the Sir Byrne Hart Stakes-G2 at Eagle Farm: his second Group victory and ensuring that the Hennessy

entire would have a future at stud (All Bar One stands at Oaklands Stud and, much to the Heinrich’s delight, his first crop son – I’m The One – won the Phelan Ready-LR for 2YOs at Eagle Farm in December).

Others to spread the news are Caulfield Group winner Dance The Waves and Queensland Group Two winner Ghetto Blaster, but the horses that have really put Gillian Heinrich front and centre are the General Nediym fillies Military Rose and Military Grace.

Fittingly, each was sold at the Gold Coast Magic Millions and typically, Gillian is ever ready to heap praise on her vet and great mate, Dr Tanya Geisel who burns considerable shoe leather inspecting yearlings at the major sales on behalf of the Heinrichs.

It would certainly pay to watch what they pick up at this year’s sales!

Quite fittingly, we give Gillian the last word … as relevant now as when quoted by the Bulletin: “It goes to show that, given equal opportunities, women can do anything as well as the blokes. I work in a male-oriented industry – it’s traditional – and I have to say I’ve had my critics.

“But I’ve shown them (critics) I can do as well as other trainers … better in some cases. I can hold my head high and I hope what I’ve done can be an inspiration in some way to other women. We can do any job, given the chance.”

put in a simply breathtaking performance to capture the Magic Millions 2YO Classic (“better than winning the Melbourne Cup”) after taking out her previous three outings.

Gillian would then take Military Rose to Sydney where she put in another command performance in the Reisling Slipper-G2, earning her favouritism for the world’s richest 2YO event – the Golden Slipper.

Unfortunately, Military Rose could only manage 11th but there was little question she wasn’t the only miss in town making her mark.

Racing in Melbourne in the spring, Military Rose didn’t handle racing anti-clockwise but still managed a third in the Champagne Stakes-G3 at Moonee Valley on Cox Plate day.

Military Grace has followed a similar route to Military Rose, winning the Calaway Gal-LR and McLachlan-LR in Brisbane during December, but couldn’t emulate her paternal sibling in the Magic Millions Classic, finishing well back. Early days however and Group glory would fit well on the agenda.
