2005 FARM TOUR VALUE-ADDED AGRICULTURE

Welcome to the Township of Langley’s third annual Farm Tour

Langley Township is a growing, vibrant “community of communities” that offers aspects of city and country life to its residents. Approximately 80% of the land is rural with 75% in the Agricultural Land Reserve. The remaining 20% is designated for urban development. In 1988, long before most municipalities were considering how they could enhance their agricultural economy, Langley Township began work on one of the first rural plans in the province. With assistance from the Economic Development Commission and the Agricultural Land Commission, Township Council adopted a Rural Plan in 1993. The primary goal was to enhance agricultural land, preserve larger lot sizes and create policies to encourage and enhance the agricultural industry in Langley.

SOURCE: Statistics Canada; 2001 Census of Agriculture What is value-added agriculture? Value-added agriculture transforms crops and livestock into products of greater value. Value-added agriculture increases the economic value of an agricultural commodity through changes in genetics, processing or diversification.

Value-added agriculture means taking crops such as corn or soybeans and livestock such as cattle, hogs, turkeys, chickens, or sheep and adding more uses to them to give them more value, increase job opportunities and expand agricultural markets.

With growth, as we know, comes change, and the face of agriculture in Canada and certainly in Lower Mainland British Columbia, is changing. Value-added business ideas allow farmers to keep their farms productive and profitable by finding ways to diversify their products. The importance of value-added agriculture grows every year. Escalating land costs and advancing urbanization makes it increasingly difficult for farmers to survive and prosper. It is no longer enough to farm a crop; you must also process your raw product, develop a marketing plan and provide a marketplace where clients can purchase your product. That is an ambitious undertaking, even for large farms but many small lot farms in Langley are doing just that. Not only are they adjusting; they are thriving going from grain to bread to breakfast. The added by-product is increased tourism – agri-tourism and added recognition of our farmers and their local produce. This Farm Tour highlights the diversity and creativity of the farming industry and its impact in terms of economic development, progressive farming operations, heritage conservation and even filming opportunities.

AGAWARE SIGNAGE PROGRAM In November 2003, the AgAware Subcommittee of the Langley Agricultural Advisory Committee met to discuss methods of enhancing agricultural awareness within the community. The plan endorsed by Council involves a series of signs located throughout different regions of the municipality. The plan is a 3-year project providing increasing information in and around the agricultural hot spots of Langley. The signs identified on the map forming part of this brochure are the signs forming Year One of the Project. Locations for Years Two and Three have yet to be identified. There are also three levels of signage. Levels 1 and 2 signage identify the major road gateways to the Agricultural Land Reserve. Level 3 signs (billboard size) are intended for the entrance to major public parks and trails, areas where people have more time to read information about the surrounding agricultural area. The success of this project is due to the joint cooperation of the Engineering Division and the Langley Environmental Partners Society (LEPS). Joint use of the existing LEPS Information Kiosk, located near the dyke at the southeast corner of 88th Avenue and Nathan Creek, serves to promote the concept of land stewardship as well as sustainable agriculture. Working with the Engineering Division, Community Development Staff, along with LAAC, has ensured that there are no related traffic hazards or flow impediments within the designated public road allowances. Level 1 AgAware signage 24 x 24 inch yellow sign mounted on a roadside post, depicting a tractor. Neighbouring

municipalities have similar signage. Level 2 AgAware signage 18 x 30 inch white sign with minimal script. Mounted on a roadside post, explaining entry into

one of Langley’s intensive agricultural areas. Signage is similar those provided for the Hopington Aquifer.

Level 3 AgAware signage 48 x 96 inch white sign, mounted on steel posts near a major footpath and ALR land, detailing

different products and commodities produced in Langley’s agricultural areas.

The Township is responsible for in total gross farm receipts, representing 29.1% of the GVRD total or 8.8% of the BC total and ranks second of all BC municipalities

The Langley Environmental Partners Society (LEPS) administers the Langley Sustainable Agriculture Network, involving several initiatives including: Agricultural Stewardship initiatives (e.g. the installation of beaver fencing, cattle crossings, fish ladders, stream bank replanting, and manure management) The Land Link Program including the identification of farmland leasing opportunities For additional information, please contact the LEPS at 604-533-6054. Agricultural land provides valuable wildlife habitat. As many as 40 species of birds and mammals can be identified along the dyke, Nathan Creek and the adjacent farmland.

THE FORT WINE CO. -26151 – 84th Avenue, Langley BC The Fort Wine Co. is a heritage style 17-acre fruit winery located just minutes from Fort Langley in the picturesque Glen Valley area of the Township of Langley. It is a farm owned and operated cranberry farm. The Winery provides delightful wines and fortified dessert wines from the finest fruits that the Fraser Valley has to offer. The owners originally acquired the property in 1998, renovated the house and developed five acres of cranberry beds next to the cranberry bog which belonged to the owner’s brother. The price of cranberries plunged and the owners found themselves with more debt than they could service with the cash flow from the cranberry crop. Their idea to start a winery was the result of considering what they could do that was value-added. When not growing cranberries or running the winery, the owner works full-time as a tugboat skipper for Washington Marine Group’s Seaspan Unit. Most of the fruit for the winery’s dozen different products comes from the Fraser Valley. The company expects to produce 15,000 to 20,000 cases this year. The winery is currently doing teset batches of kiwi wine made from Aldergrove kiwis.

KRAUSE BROTHERS FARMS – 6170 – 248th Street, Langley BC The Krause family began with 2 acres in 1974 and expanded over the past 27 years to over 165 acres of strawberries, blueberries, raspberries and blackberries. Pick your own beautiful fresh berries (in season) or simply buy berries freshly picked, in addition to the best sweet corn, freshly dug potatoes and the fantastic Krause artichokes. Friends of the Krauses’ help them provide guests with great local vegetables, Okanagan cherries and other tree fruits. The country store is stocked full of specialty jams, jellies, syrups and gift baskets. Watch the bees making the honey that is used in creating the berry/honey bar and bee soaps. No one leaves without a visit to “The Porch” for trademark berry shortcake, or an old-fashioned berry milkshake. Freshly baked berry pies sell out daily. The berry season extends into the fall including specialty squash, decorative gourds and pumpkin pies. After Thanksgiving, the farm gets ready for its annual “Christmas in the Country”
