Description of Image 1- Flyers

Main Goal :When creating this image, my main goal was to focus on the portraying the Philadelphia Flyers as “Bullies”. I wanted to show them cleaning up trash around Philadelphia, the “trash” would be players of other rival teams. When I began, it became more and more complicated. So I simplified my image down to my main focal point, of portraying the Flyers as “nightmarish bullies”. That is how I came up with the idea of converging, The Nightmare On Elm Street movie poster with a Philadelphia Flyers theme. It has been titled, “Nightmare on Broad Street”. I wanted to demonstrate how cut throat and scary at times hockey can be, and to pay homage to our teams infamous nick-name and to one of our all time best players. The city of Philadelphia is known across the country for having the most die-hard sports fans.

CREATING THE IMAGE :First I found a large image of the movie poster wallpaper for The Nightmare on Elm Street. Then I collected my other images, including a Pittsburgh Penguins Jersey, Philadelphia Flyers logo, Bobby Clarke, and Freddy Kreugers hat. I utilized the magic wand tool to cut out the portions of the image I did not want. Also I used the selection tool to help remove larger portion of the image that I wanted to eliminate. I strategically placed my images in a way that would make it look like Bobby Clarke is creating horrible nightmares for a Penguins fan. I utilized the saturation tool to alter the colors of the image slightly. I used various paintbrush strokes around the border to give it a cool effect. I used various filters to make the image of Bobby Clarke look more like a movie poster painting, to coincide with the rest of the poster. I also utilized the text to type, “Nightmare on Broadstreet the title of the image. The Eraser tool came in handy when removing unwanted edges of an image, allowing the background image to come through. Using the burn tool I was able to alter the image a little making it more undefined effect, as well as the blur tool. Lastly I used some drop shadow and outer glow to give the appearance of some shadow on the faces in the image.

• Main Goal - In Image 1, I placed the Liberty Bell, which symbolizes America’s Independence, on a dinner table. The Liberty Bell is located in the heart of Philadelphia between Market Street and 5 th & 6th Street. The bell was used to summon lawmakers to legislative sessions and to alert citizens to public meeting and proclamations. At the heart of every Philadelphia historic leader and sports fan are the famous Philly foods. These foods are included in Image 1, placed on a dinner table along with the Liberty Bell.

Description of Independence Hall – Original and Current (Image 1)

Description and Goals

• MAIN GOAL -My part in our group’s project was to show the historical images of Philadelphia I chose Independence Hall. This embodies all of what America’s founding fathers fought for in 1775. Independence Hall is the symbol of the colonies’ freedom from tyranny and the beginning of a new nation. The original flag was made by Betsy Ross and contained 13 white stars on a blue background. It also had 13 stripes symbolizing the 13 original colonies. I also copied a picture of Betsy Ross and placed her in the upper right hand corner of my pictorial essay.

• The second picture of my pictorial Essay is another image of Independence Hall but this time the modern version of the building. I wanted to show a Philadelphia symbol that reflected our history and also a symbol to reflect our current times. The flag is different but the colors were the same. It was much easier this second time around with the only variation of the building itself and the different flag.

• HOW I ACHIEVED THIS IMAGE - I opened my background layer, Old Independence Hall. I resize the picture and use the Brush Tools and went to the background color and clicked on red. For more transparency, I clicked on “Opacity” and put it on 50%. I then went on to paint the blue under the stars and then repeated the same steps to paint on the white stripes and white stars. I did the same thing with the current image of Independence Hall and painted the current flag.

Description Image 2 - EaglesMAIN GOAL

When creating this image, initially my idea was to use word play and puns. Being that the Eagles are birds, I wanted to create an image portraying some Eagles football players sitting on a telephone wire hanging out with other real actual birds. The Eagles football team inspires and holds deep roots within the hearts of many Philadelphians. Despite their recent track record, fans will always be passionate and enthusiastic about their home team. The Eagles fan base is huge several movies have even been based around the famous team.

CREATING THE IMAGE:I first began looking for images of telephone poles and or wires to be my primary background. I

found the image on the first page of Google images. Then I began looking for images of actual bald eagles. I tried to look for three in total. I utilized the magic want to cut out the portions of the image I wanted to discard, so all that was left was the sole image of just the bald eagle. I think searched for an image of Philadelphia Eagle players sitting on a bench. I then like the other images, used the magic wand tool to get rid of the exterior portions of the original image. Afterwards I began to place where I wanted the images to go on the background image of the telephone wire. I also used to the selection tool to help with the removal of excess portions of the images. I wanted it to look like the Eagles were lounging on the wire with other birds. I placed the players sitting on the wire. I also used the saturation tool to alter colors of the images. I used paint strokes that looked like clouds to give the illusion of the sky in the background. Lastly I faded the Eagles logo into the background, really large to make it some prominent.

Description of Image 2

• Main Goal - In Image 2, I placed images of the lighted houses on Boathouse Row on each blade. Boathouse Row is a National Historic Landmark in the city of Philadelphia. On the oar handles, I placed images of the Schuylkill River reflecting off of the boathouses. Boathouse Row hosts many rowing regattas in Philadelphia and the boathouses are seen as the center of the rowing community. I also placed on Image 2, the Philadelphia Rowing symbol and the Philadelphia Dad Vail Regatta logo. The Dad Vail Regatta is the largest collegiate rowing event held in Philadelphia annually. The boathouses are home to many high school competitors as well as master’s athletes.

Philadelphia Figures in Independence Hall -Image 2Description and Goals

• Main Goal I wanted this image to have some contemporary and historical images of Philadelphians placed in and around Independence Hall. I place the following figures within the building: Nutter, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, John Adams with Betsy Ross and George Washington placed outside the building. I wanted to show just a few of the historical Philadelphians within a very famous building – Independence Hall. I used Independence Hall since it is a symbol for historical and contemporary Philadelphia!

• How I achieved this Image I selected a background image (Independence Hall) and opened it into photo shop. This is my background. I then opened up the images of the famous Philadelphians one at a time. I used the lasso tool to cut around the figure, copied the figure out and then pasted it on the background picture. I then resized it and used the move tool to place it in the area I selected. I save it.

Description Image 3 – Phillies

MAIN GOAL:For this Image I wanted to portray the “Phillie Phanatic” as

King Kong, taking over New York. The New York Yankees have been big rivals for the Philadelphia Phillies for a long time. I wanted to have him hanging off of the Empire State Building as if he was terrorizing the city or “taking” over.

CREATING THE IMAGE:Creating this image was more simplistic than creating the

other images. I strategically placed the picture of the Phillie Phanatic on the top of the Empire State Building. I cut his left arm and angled it more to look like it is gripping the building. In addition I added smoke and fire with the variety of tools. I also used various saturations to alter the overall image colors.

• Main Goal - In Image 3, I placed images of the Philadelphia Zoo. The Philadelphia Zoo is America’s first zoo. I started my image with a blue background and added the famous Philadelphia Zoo Balloon. The next image I added was Benjamin Franklin, who originally started the Philadelphia Zoo. The Philadelphia Zoo is a 42-acre Victorian garden that is home to more than 1300 animals, many of them rare and endangered. With that in mind, I placed a polar bear, lion, koala bear, giraffe, and bird. To finish the image, I added clouds to the background. The Philadelphia Zoo is one of Philadelphia’s leading family attractions.

Eagle Collage -Image 3 Goals and Description

• Main Goal This is a collage represents the individuals and symbols that made Philadelphia the historical city it is today. I chose the Bald Eagle with the partial script of the Declaration of Independence as my background layer. I added a picture that represents a small part of historical Philadelphia: Waterworks, Edgar Allen Poe, Liberty Bell, and City Hall. Each picture represents a rich history of Philadelphia.

• How I achieved this Image The steps I used to create this image were to open the bald eagle/declaration of independence image as the background layer. I then opened up the following images and used the move tool and image size tool to make them the size I wanted and to place them in order. I used the Vertical Type tool and used the color palette to write the phrases. I repeated it in blue after doing the first phrase in red.
