Photo Notes, DefinitionPhoto Notes, Definition• Information. That is what we are

collecting in the field.

• Part of this information gathering is the powerful feature of automatically associating Photo Notes to what we measure.

• At your disposal is the ability to collect not just the traditional five fields of Point Number, Northing, Easting, Elevation, and Code..but also:

– full descriptive notes– digital photos– attributes to populate GIS

databases, etc.

• Two field devices that have built in digital cameras are the Topcon FC-2500 field controller and the GRS-1 receiver.

• Digital photos taken in TopSURV will automatically be associated to the field measurement (the point).

• Within the data collection screen of Survey / Topo, you have the expected options of declaring the point’s Name (number 102 for this example), and it’s functional Code (CP Control Point).

• If you wish to also collect a Photo Note for this field measurement, you can tap the Point Attribute Button.

• From the Point Attribute screen, you can populate any descriptive attributes that have been setup in your field job’s Code Library. However, to also associate a Photo Note, tap the Photo Note tab.

• There are two methods available. You can either Browse to an existing image on your controller (perhaps taken previously or with another digital camera) or you can Capture an image where you stand.

• Once you select that you want to Capture an image, TopSURV will instantly power the internal digital camera on in your field controller. Notice that at the bottom of the screen, you can toggle and change your camera’s image resolution.

• If you use the higher resolutions, you will need to keep the camera quite still and the file sizes will be larger. Not a bad thing, just be aware of that.

• It is common to “split the difference” and use the preset camera resolution of 1024 x 768 pixels. Typically this resolution will result in images that are about 80 Kb in file size.

• What do you name the resulting image? It is a user preference. However, it is common to name the image something similar to the point (field measurement) that it is to be associated with.

• Recall that for this example, the point number is 102. Therefore, we will declare that this image is also named “102”.

• Notice where the image is automatically being stored (…\TopSURV \ Images \ <Job Name>). …we’ll see this later.

• By tapping the OK button within Point Attribute screen, you will be returned to the Topo point measurement dialog.

• For this example, multiple photo notes have been taken and associated to the point numbered 102. However, the field measurement has not been taken. ..we are “spring loaded”.

• With the bubble in the circle and the receiver in a Fixed solution, we can tap the Start button to record our field measurement. The photo notes are automatically associated to the Topo point.

• The (three epoch) field measurement for point numbered 102 has been taken. Therefore, TopSURV automatically incremented the point number to 103.

• To pause and check if the Photo Notes were associated to point number 102, you can tap the Context Menu (Topcon logo at upper left corner) and select Edit Points.

• This will shortcut you from the Topo screen directly to a listing of all points currently in your TopSURV field job.

• Tap to select the point that you want to review (point 102 for this example) and Edit. You will instantly see the field measurement’s coordinates. However, since this point has Photo Notes associated to it, you will want to tap the Photo Note tab.

• Here in the Edit Point screen, you can quickly see which photos are associated to it. The toggle button to the right is a visual indication that there are more photos available for this topo measurement. …excellent.
