Tony Brady: Post-mortem 2008 -2009

Started the sport of "Triathlon" at age 55, for the 2008 -2009 season. This is account of where I began, progressed and finished for that 12 month period. (report written in 2010) Now at age 61, and still competing, times are coming down. I have finished 5 Ironman races since.

• Other Horses - included Gipsy, Shar, Indi & Squoll"

• Biggest Disappointment - Withdrawing Lame at start of 4th Leg at “The Tom Quilty - Gold Cup” 160km at Mt. Pleasant S.A. (living in Creswick then), this with the Tevis Cup (in USA) are the equivalent to Kona - Ironman

The beginning!

• 01/01/2008 Running start - Objective: Health/Fitness/Weight. AIM: Adelaide City to Bay - 12km. 1hr/day - 5 day/week - Training, Streets Adelaide - Boring. (Bought my first set of Runners in 15 Years - NIKE - Air Pegasus, lasted to the 2009 ITUWC, gave myself a present at Harbour-town at the Gold Coast and got some NEW Adidas.)

• 08/09/2008 City to Bay - Adelaide 2008, 12 km Run. time: 54min : 25sc, 5th - 55 years age group, 1,206 - 10,023 / 12km runners starters. Happy!

• Now What!

• 17/10/2008 Joined Tri-SA @ Age 55 Years. Value for money - 5 week clinic, Tri-SA Membership, Club of Choice Membership, Free entry to Triple Sprint. Clinic Started next day.

• 18/10/2008 Tri-Start Clinic with Nigel, 5 Weeks.(Main thing I remember. Very important, is to REST! Right! - must remember that at 4.30 in morning.)

• Joined Lakers Club - Reason : none really, other than Training session close to CBD, and liked there Web site, informative. Little did I know they were Hard Core! What have I got myself into?

• The fun begins.

I did well here for my first Challenge, (Don’t kid myself, all the talent was at Port Mac.) !!!

After I had done the first Tin-man, a few people that I spoke to asked why was I doing more Tin-man races and not progressing to the Challenge event. Answer! !

Firstly - I had pre-paid for the 5 Tin-Man race’s to take the saving (Scottish blood) and prompt me to continue all. !Secondly- I lacked confidence in the water, and the thought of the 750m swim in open water made me very anxious.

(After the first Tin-Man, 300M swim - No Wetsuit - I froze my butt off! Need more Fat.) Bought a second hand wet suit that day off Craig Newton, I was Hooked - Money down, have to go on. !

Thirdly - The tin-Man is a lot of fun, not to much pressure, plus I did all right in it, and this was a good confidence boost. (Plus, I needed more Glasses - never did make a set of 6 - always 2010)

S.A. Triathlon - Triple Sprint (2 laps)

• Date: 23/11/2008

• Distance: 2 laps - 250m / 6.5km / 1.7km/ lap

• Time: 1hr: 04min: 05sec

• Place: 1st, 55-59 age group

• Gen Position: 3rd - 36 Entrants

• Comments: At the time I thought this was the hardest thing i had done (2nd event). i still in doubt whether I would like to do the 3 laps, it is intense.

• Funniest thing - On start of 2 swim lap, fronted to beach to begin and the guy on the surf board close to shore - yells to me, “You going to swim in those runners” - Embarrassing (I got over it), running back through transition with runners in hand.

• I think i was fatter them, and greyer (still got the Black gear - Nigel, and the white legs! )

Challenge Series - Adelaide: Sprint

• This Race was a very-very-very Big deal to me! 3rd event and a big step up - Swimming in the sea - yo! thats like with waves and sharks, I'm not a beach person. Adelaide did it well. NO - exceptionally! Thanks Lorenzo for your encouragement, and Nathan, I could see that red cap you used to wear bobbing along in front but I just couldn't catch you, try as I did, I was knackered.

• Date: 28/11/2008

• Distance: 750m / 20km / 5km

• Time: 1hr: 17min: 36sec

• Place: 1st - 55-59 age group (only one)

• Gen. Position: 83 - 123 Entrants

• points: 29 for ITU World Champs - Sprint Distance (maximum 30 and still couldn't get it!) Funny!

• Comments: Hadn't heard of the World Champs until a couple of months later, when others where planning trips interstate to get points. I left it at one event! Put in my application for the ITUWC, and got a guernsey, its good to be old!

• I think I was the best dressed guy at registration, I had to leave a wedding at Henley Beach, to do the registration.

ASIC Victor Harbour - Olympic Distance

Date: 08/03/2009 Distance: 1.5 km /40 km/ 10 km Time: 2hr: 43min :57sec Place: 5th Gen. Position: 183 - 241 Entrants !!Comments: Race was a bit of a blur!r!r! Longest to date - last minute entry! Very Hot - for me, with a hard ride up the hill’s on the old pug! remember the Peugeot - (1975 model when steel was king with 10 speed analog shifters on the column, weighed in a 16kg with water bottles and spare’s: carbon: who need’s it!) It’s not dead yet - just retired. (waiting for the bakery run.) !Good night out at the Pizza House in Victor, with the Lakers crew (from memory - Nathan, Zoe, James, Angela, Sophie, @ others (sorry memory gone) and Hot Donuts for supper on the Esplanade. !!!!!!!!!!!!Photo: Top: Frank Bennink - (Triple Sprint) Go frank! Date: 22/03/2009 Distance: 2.0km / 60km / 15km Time: 4hr:13min:25sec Place: 6th Gen. Position: 159 - 279 Entrants Points: 24 ITUWC-LC !Comments: Best event so far - Great organizers, very good turn out - and the main thing to remember great - FOOD - Ice cream, cakes, biscuits, lollies, you name it they seemed to have it! !I’m definitely doing the next one. !Note: Photo left - the PUG still lives. Was hard work into the wind, being Red helped. !Chrome steel toe clips and runners make for quick transition, but thats about all. !!!!!!!!!!Photo’s: !Top left: Chris Mehaffey - Looking good (Charging home.) with the build of a drovers dog! (NO OFFENSE). It always seems the skinny ones surprise you when it comes to

Busselton W.A - Half Ironman

!Date: 03/05/2009 Distance: 1.9km /90.1km /21.1km Time: 5hr:43min:04sec Place: 12th Gen.Position: 775 - 1800 Entrants Points: 19 ITUWC-LC !Comments: A race with the word “IRONMAN” all be it Half, this is starting to overstep the mark. Purchased a NEW - Second-hand Cervelo P2C (The Ducks Gut’s ) on Ebay. from W.A. Bike Turned up on Friday week before event, this gave me time to assemble, with a basic setup and do the Saturday Lakers ride on the NEW very unfamiliar Triathlon machine. No time for AERO Bar training - it will have to wait. Disassembly of bike and repacked for trip to Busso. One more practice ride at yallingup w.a. and setup tweak, that will have to do. !I think in had a week of anxiety attacks and was worn out before the race start. The whole process of the Entry, Booking, Journey, hassle with Car hire at Airport (Bike case wouldn’t fit in car), riding new bike, registration process and socialising with friends where I was staying at Yallingup (in a house owned by Taj Burrow) 45km west of Busselton, (Top Surfing & Whale Watching), It all wore me down, before the start. It’s what you have to do - life’s not at Triathlon. !Finally: The start, hit the water anxiety gone, the work begins. Swim uneventful, beautiful clear still water not on Bronze Whaler to be seen! !Bike: All going well until I crashed at end of first lap of bike leg. In a flash on the deck : “Shit “- that hurst, but it brought the crowd alive. While of was straightening bike - another rider comes down, crowd is buzzing - they like it! !I put it down to my inexperience, NEW unfamiliar bike, wet road and bad positioning of the Bottle exchange. I did learn sometime - Caution - Caution - did i say Caution! !Back on bike, my hip was starting to seize up where I landed hard, rest of injury’s only lose of skin & blood to elbow, knee, and shoulder. Finished next two laps mainly using left leg. (good to have two.) First time I had ridden 90 km straight. !Never did use AERO Bars - too scary, (had quite a few comments on passing riders telling me to get down on though Aero bars ( NO-NO way), it was nice they where thinking of me. !Run - cramped within 1/2km, on left leg, put it down to over use on bike, walked it out and settled into slow run, walked through all drink stops and kept well hydrated, best thing I did. At turn around point end of second lap, heard over P.A. - Richard Pryor’s name called as he finished - Great job, gave me some inspiration to get it finished too. !The end - fantastic! Elated! Tired! !Many thanks to Mary Mitchell - That lone Laker supporter in the crowd, and well done Andrew Short, in a great race. (I met Andrew for first time in Transition pre-race) !After event, a couple of hours sleep, then an evening of WII Golf & Bowling & Beers. Next Day sleep in, them went squidding off Cape Naturalist! This is what it is all about! Calamari for tea and some more Beers, and sleep. !Tuesday, drive back to Perth, do some business for the firm, and a relaxed flight home.

Training - !Decision in July to do the Busselton Ironman. !Downloaded 20 weeks training program from net !http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/cms/article-detail.asp?articleid=441 !Fairly comprehensive program and works for me, but probably not everyone. !Each week has a details schedule! - I just mixed it up (mainly days ) to suit my personal requirements, but in essence completed all components. !I liked it because it is based on RPE (my perceived excursion) so I became the taskmaster! !Note: After an initial read and evaluation, after I had started I did not look ahead in the program more than 1 week, it was to daunting to think about. But now I look back at all my jottings and notes, its a fantastic reminder. So keep notes: on a daily basis. !In a nut shell, summary at left. !I tried to incorporate as many Laker training events into the schedule as possible, but as the weekly hours grew it became harder. The Saturday ride was always a must, this always pushed me harder and more than required. (It pays off, along with the Winter hill running. Killed me but great value!) !The Sprint and Long course World Champs melded in O.K. with only small rescheduling. !At time of writing, training has peaked & I’m in the final 4 weeks. Nearing the Taper, 10 hr this week and only 14 hr next week then cruising, felling - good, well O.K. - Tired. !Fitted in the First Gatti on Sunday after a 19hr week, with included a 6hr bike & 1hr run on Saturday, and was amazed I still had energy - I don’t know where it comes from.

!!IRONMAN - Western Australia !Date: Saturday 5 December 2009 Distance: 3.8km Swim -180km Bike - 42.2km Run Finish time: 12hr: 43min: 49sec Swim: 1hr: 09: 12sec Bike: 6hr: 05: 53sec (1 x flat tyre) Run: 5hr: 28min: 41sec Place: 9th of 33 starters, in age group: 55-59 years Position overall individuals: 659 Individuals Entrants: 1309 Finishers: 1122 Teams: 111 !!Comments: Awesome !!! - To be up the front of the swim start line, looking back to the beach into the 6am Sun to the East, chopper overhead, light aircraft (shark spotter) circling, music blaring, the crystal clear water of the Indian Ocean, 1300 competitors crammed in together for a mass start. I didn't even here the start gun! Where away! - nerves gone instantly - the work begins, adrenaline on high! !My last event for the 2009 Year! It’s be a long ride, and a sharp learning curve - from joining TRI-SA on the 17/10/2008. now I can reflect on the year to come, what will that hold.
