What’s the Purpose of a Resume?
• Distinguish yourself among a pool of candidates
• Pre-screening tool for employers• Communicate evidence of
accomplishments• Example of your communication skills• Gain an Interview• Help organize your thoughts for an

• Sloppiness• Wordiness • Unfocused• Typographical errors • Omitting GPA (can be considered a red flag
to some employers)
Effective Resume Writing
TIP #1:
One page max! Cover letter is a nice to do, but a strong resume is priority #1.
TIP #2:
Use clear, concise communication and edit ruthlessly. This will force you to effectively dimensionalize your skills/experiences & accomplishments. Ineffective and verbose resumes will be a barrier to finding a job.

Stress first your strongest and most recent strengths, experiences, contributions, etc.

TIP #4:
For campus organizations highlight leadership positions. For example, we don’t just want to know if you are a member of a club.

TIP #5:
Each bullet point should show your work using C.A.R. format (context, action, result). A little Context, Action of what you did, and quantitative/qualitative Result. Do NOT just list your responsibilities. This same format in writing an effective resume can be used during an interview.

Look at your resume to communicate evidence of accomplishments, help gain an interview, and help to organize your thoughts for an interview.

• No need to include a generic career objective
• Keep personal data to a minimum
• Include timeframes of roles.
• Do not add skills on bottom that everyone has
• Only add hobbies if relevant to the job
• Don’t use MS Template for Resume’s
