Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time (Cycle B) Pastor’s Corner The readings this weekend present to us Jesus’ open struggle against the evil
spirits. There is a battle ground: a man’s body. There are bystanders, spectators
as if for a competition, people who are curious, also people with faith. Jesus
overcomes the evil spirit with the strength of his word, and the man is freed.
More than an isolated story, this is a real manifestation of what the saving
mission of the Lord means. With this gesture Jesus wants to tell us that He
came to bring us spiritual freedom. The evil spirits still roam around in our time,
in our streets and cities. And the same struggle between good and evil still goes
on daily in the heart of each person.
Jesus comes with his word to deliver us from evil. He comes to uproot from our
hearts the spirit of selfishness, to cleans us from hatred and to instill in us a new
spirit.
My sincere thanks to Francisco Dueñas, our Youth Director, for the excellent
job he is doing with our two youth groups, inspiring and guiding them. Their
meetings are very well attended and I am proud and happy to see so many
young people involved in our parish.

I… You… We are One
For centuries, the Catholic Church has performed more works of charity than any other organization in the world. Why? Because God is love, and through that powerful statement, He teaches us that it is in giving that we receive. His message is simple—to love God above all else and to love others. It is through His love that I seek your help. You are the answer to someone’s prayers, and together, we are changing lives.
United, as one family of God, we feed the hungry, cloth the poor, care for the sick and dying, and touch the hearts of those in despair. With the guidance of the Holy Spirit, we nourish and educate our children, both spiritually and intellectually. We assist the poorest of our parishes and schools so that all persons may encounter Jesus Christ. We provide shelter for the homeless. As Catholics, we consistently defend and respect the dignity of all human life, work to eliminate prejudice, and promote social justice. We journey together by sharing in the sacraments—from baptism to receiving the Eucharist, to confirmation and penance, to marriage and anointing the sick. And this year, we are blessed with sixty-five men studying in our seminaries answering their call to the priesthood to become shepherds of Christ here in south Florida. You make all this possible. Let us unite through our support of this year’s ABCD so that I… you… and we can continue to carry out the good works of Jesus Christ here in South Florida.
Yo… Usted…

SILENT SATURDAY RETREAT, Feb. 7
February 3, St. Blaise a physician, and bishop of Sebastea in
historical Armenia (modern Sivas, Turkey), was martyred by
being beaten, attacked with iron combs, and beheaded.
According to tradition, while Blaise was being taken into
custody, a distraught mother, whose only child was choking
on a fishbone, threw herself at his feet and implored his
intercession. Touched at her grief, he offered up his prayers,
and the child was cured. Consequently, Saint Blaise is
invoked for protection against injuries and illnesses of the
throat.
garganta.
February 5, St. Agatha was born at Catania, Sicily, and she
was martyred in approximately 251. She is one of seven
women, who, along with the Blessed Virgin Mary, are
commemorated by name in the first Eucharistic Prayer.

Thank you to all who donated sweaters and blankets for the
school’s drive to help the homeless in our community. It was
a very successful drive collecting many new and gently used
items right in time for the recent cold weather in Miami.
The eighth grade students delivered the donations to the
Missionaries of Charity, a center that cares for the poorest of
poor in Miami’s inner city by providing daily lunches,
clothing , and emergency shelter for women and children.
During their visit, the students also helped with serving lunch
in the soup kitchen. It was a very memorable experience for
these students as they put their faith into action and helped
make a difference in the community.

Plans for the St. Hugh gala are on their way. This year our annual gala
will be held on Saturday, March 21st at 7:30 at the Jungle Island
Ballroom. As in the past, we are looking forward to a great evening with our St. Hugh friends and

personally donate items? Do you have a contact that you could approach for auction items? These
items may be gift certificates to restaurants, hair salons, gyms and/or stores that you patronize.
Other popular items are gift baskets, vacation getaways, electronics or sports memorabilia.
If you can help by donating an item, please contact the office at 305-448-5602.

Virtue of the Month This month, St. Hugh students will be learning about the
virtue of friendship. They will be learning and discussing:
How Jesus called his disciples, “friends,” and what it
means to cultivate a friendship with God through prayer
and seeking reconciliation.
Ways to nurture healthy and life-giving friendships based
on honesty, trust, faithfulness, and mutual respect
