Company: Tesco (Properties)

Client: Tesco plc.

Since March 2013 I have been

in an open-ended contract

working for Tesco Properties in

my role as a Senior

Artworker/Retoucher/IT

support specialist in the design

department.

My day to day duties include

producing large format

artwork for Tesco stores,

photoshop retouching, IT

support to over 15 macintosh

computers and I also look

after the studio’s Mac Mini

server and RAID system -

which I costed, set up and

maintain daily.

Tesco “One Voice” Bakery in-store headersI create large format signage artwork for all ofTesco’s categories. Usually the imagery is shot atTesco’s studio in Milton Keynes. Due to budgetconstraints, the Bakery category imagery had to becomposed from existing Tesco library images andexternal photo libraries. I worked with an artdirector to research suitable images. I would buildthe selected images onto a cutting board imagethat was agreed for use throughout the Bakeryheaders. I would cut-out, rebuild or add to existingimages then apply colour adjustments and applydepth-of-field-blurs to match existing backgrounds. The images were flattened and saved as tiffs forimporting into InDesign.

Photoshop stage 1Original core image. I rebuilt the left hand side

of the croissant then applied a cut-out path.

Photoshop stage 2 Wooden chopping board image with a mask

to allow a background image to show through.

Photoshop stage 3I added in a stock photo plate image, adjusted

the plate colour and applied shadowsunderneath.

Photoshop stage 4I took a stock pain-au-chocolat image for the

background, cut it out then built shadows andreflections onto the plate.

Photoshop stage 5I added a version of the image I used to

rebuild the croissant as the background tocomplete the full composition below.

RightA typical layeringstructure for thePhotoshop files.

I also look after Mac users in

other departments in Tesco

Properties. This situation has

arisen because Tesco do not

officially have any Macintosh

IT support service. I liaise with

Tesco IT support in India to

help solve Tesco staff’s day-to-

day issues.

I am also involved in advising

and sometimes costing up

Mac systems for Tesco staff

upgrading their computers.

As part of the Tesco Phone

Shop store refresh, I was asked

to add in fret cut letters to store

images, along with colour

changes and wall fixtures.

The images are then presented

in a design proposal pack to a

Tesco Design Manager.

Images after retouching(Above) In Photoshop I added in the Phone shop patch sign, rebuilt the walls without fixtures toadd new posters and a colour change. I also supplied a version showing different colour routes.

(Right) I added in the fret cut letters then rebuilt the walls by paths and cutting out foregroundobjects. Colour changes could then be applied on different routes.

open-ended contract for Slice

Design - a packaging and

I produced mock-ups of

potential dispensers, leaflets

and POS items for Biotene –

a mouth hygiene product to

be launched in Eastern Europe.

I would assemble master

Illustrator files that were fully

editable, then export as tiff

files for import into Photoshop

and edges to give the images

a basic 3D effect.

S&D Gallery We were asked to create the brand and Website/content managementsystem for a new Client – S&D Gallery. 3 designers worked on the brandmarquee and one of my designs was chosen. I was also responsible foradding/updating content for the website using WordPress.

Shown below are logo routes and the current website.

Source monthly factsheets The line graphs are automated via an Excel file running amacro then output as PDFs ready for updating in theInDesign files. The Pie charts are automated inChartsmith from templates that I set up. The tables arelinked to a central Excel file that is in-turn linked to aBloomberg feed. Once approved, I use Zevrix’s BatchOutput to create Web secured PDFs. I can also automatethe creation of print-ready files when they are requestedfor any new product launches.

The Porsche account was a

pleasure to work on, due to

the fact that they always had

large print budgets and they

were very keen on pushing

boundaries to the limits on

their printed material. Most of

the work was for their

accessories and vehicle

pre-order customisation.

This press pack was used
