WELCOME TO TILSLEY COLLEGE
The life of Tilsley College is marked by a con-‐cern for mission and is shaped by the biblical mandate that Jesus gave to his disciples, “As the Father has sent me (into the world), so send I you”. At the heart of Jesus’ public ministry was his training of a small group of disciples. He spent 2me with them, helping them to see the im-‐portance of not only knowing who he was, but of doing what he did, and increasingly being like him in holiness of character. It is this example of training that we try to model at Tilsley – we want to equip God’s people in comprehension, competence and character in order to con2nue God’s work in God’s world. Tilsley has been training people for service for over 35 years, and graduates from the college are part of God’s mission in many parts of the world. Some return to a previous career, some go on to further educa2on, and others enter full-‐2me church or mission work, but each one pays tribute to the value of taking 2me out in the company of the Lord Jesus to study and to prac2se the work He has sent every disciple to do.
As part of the ministry of Gospel Literature Out-‐reach, Tilsley College has a rela2onship with eight similar colleges throughout the world giv-‐ing it a truly interna2onal perspec2ve. We are a small college with an average annual intake of 12-‐18 students. This creates an in2mate atmo-‐sphere which is an ideal environment for dis-‐cipleship-‐style training. We are also an interna-‐2onal college with students who come from across Europe; we also regularly have one or two from further afield. So let me welcome you to Tilsley. We are com-‐miZed to equipping Chris2an men and women to serve God effec2vely in today’s mul2-‐cultural world, through deepening their understanding of the Bible, encouraging Christ-‐like character and developing skills in the context of Chris2an ministry. We would love to help you in this way.

WHY TRAIN AT TILSLEY COLLEGE?
We believe that Tilsley College has a unique contribu2on to make in the spectrum of theological educa2on in the UK. Our Cer.ficate and Diploma in Higher Educa.on in Biblical Studies and Chris.an Ministry offer a breadth of knowledge and hands-‐on experience which makes them an excellent pre-‐para2on for further theological training or as a valuable bridge into full 2me Chris2an ministry. We concentrate on maintaining a careful balance between three key aspects of effec2ve training: comprehension, character and competence. Put another way we are commiZed to:
Knowing Most applicants to Bible col-‐leges are keen to improve their Bible knowledge. We share that goal because we believe that if Chris2ans are to minister effec2vely in God’s world they need to have a good knowledge of the Bible, theology and how to handle the challenges that they will face in the contemporary world.
Being Fewer applicants place an emphasis on character devel-‐opment when signing up to Bible college. At Tilsley Col-‐lege we believe that this is at the core of effec2ve ministry — integrity of character — being like Jesus. Spiritual ma-‐turity is something to be taught and modelled, to be trained in, and to be mastered. Part of our training provides for inten2onal dis-‐cipling which by the power of God’s Spirit will lead to spir-‐itual growth and the forma-‐2on of Christ-‐like character.
Doing Classroom learning can ocen leave Bible college students as poor prac22oners. We are convinced that training is not merely an academic pursuit but that theory must be com-‐bined with prac2ce in order to develop skill in Chris2an ministry. Tilsley College will offer you a mul2tude of op-‐portuni2es to par2cipate in actual ministry situa2ons which range from cross-‐cul-‐tural mission to local church ministry, and from gospel preaching to social ac2on.

TILSLEY COLLEGE - CORE VALUES
Bible-‐based We hold a high view of Scripture and believe that through it God makes his will and his per-‐son known. One third of our study units are focused en2rely on reading the biblical text and other study units – whether in theology, church ministry, or mission prac2ce – are robustly based on a close examina2on of the Bible.
Mission-‐minded All the staff at Tilsley have a deep commitment to world mission. Many of them have spent decades in cross-‐cultural mission prac2ce and know firsthand the challenges to be faced. Be-‐ing part of Gospel Literature Outreach links us to an interna2onal mission network stretching from Europe to Africa, Australia to Indonesia and New Zealand to South America. We also have close partnerships with other Mission Ser-‐vice Groups. “Interna2onal” is part of who we are; mission shapes all that we do.
Prac.cal Our students are assigned to prac2cal place-‐ments in youth, children’s and social ministry sefngs. They par2cipate in team evangelism opportuni2es as well as cross-‐cultural mission experiences. A prac2cal field term tailored to
the student’s own personal interests and min-‐istry skills is part of the overall course structure. Students will be helped to discover, develop and use their spiritual gics.
Rela.onal An effec2ve Chris2an life is marked by healthy rela2onships. In Tilsley College we recognise the need to grow in our rela2onship with God and with one another as members of the church of the Lord Jesus Christ. Each day, 2me is given to collec2ve college devo2ons ocen led by the students themselves, but personal devo-‐2ons and spiritual growth are also encouraged through a mentoring programme. A mentor will meet regularly with each student offering them prayer support and someone to confide in for the dura2on of the course. The college is also keen to maintain good rela2onships with local churches, being aware of the key role they play in training and moulding an individual. Stu-‐dents are assigned to a local church where they can enjoy fellowship, make new friends and par2cipate in the life of the church. Staff and students at Tilsley mix freely which encourages a close community with family-‐like rela2onships of Chris2an love and understand-‐ing.

TILSLEY PROGRAMMES
Tilsley College offers two, full-‐2me, residen2al programmes: a two-‐year Diploma of Higher Educa2on and a one-‐year Cer2ficate of Higher Educa2on. The college is accredited by the Bri2sh Accredita2on Council and the two programmes are accredited by the European Evangelical Accredita2on Associ-‐a2on.
Cer.ficate in Biblical Studies and Chris.an Ministry This one year, residen2al programme combines biblical and theological studies with prac2cal ministry experience through weekly place-‐ments, a week of Team Evangelism and a four week long Field Placement. Instead of the normal ministry placements in children’s ministry, youth ministry and social ac2on, students can opt to follow an online course in Teaching English as a Foreign Lan-‐guage. The three TEFL op2ons all involve online training and lead to various levels of TEFL quali-‐fica2ons, from TESOL Assistant to TESOL Ac-‐credited Teacher Status. Students who opt for the TEFL route choose which level of TEFL quali-‐fica2on they wish to aZain and study this as the prac2cal ministry component of their Cer2fic-‐ate course. The two higher levels of TEFL quali-‐fica2on also entail the Field Placement com-‐ponent of the course being used for training and experience in teaching English.
Diploma in Biblical Studies and Chris.an Ministry This is a two year full-‐2me programme where the first year is the same as the Cer.ficate course. The second year is a mixture of 2me spent in ministry appren2ceship with a local church or mission organisa2on and intensive, residen2al teaching weeks. The placement is organised with the student to give a meaningful ministry experience with, at its core, a mentoring rela2onship with current Chris2an prac22oners.

CERTIFICATE IN BIBLICAL STUDIES AND CHRISTIAN MINISTRY
Biblical Studies These topics are designed to give a broad un-‐derstanding of the content of the Bible and how it came together. These topics comprise sur-‐veys as well as more detailed study of individual books. The aim is to give students confidence in using the Bible both in their own lives and in ministry.
Chris.an Theology and History These topics enable students to grasp the major doctrines of the Chris2an faith and to under-‐stand the historical situa2on in which these doctrines were formed. They work systema2c-‐ally through doctrines of God, Crea2on, Hu-‐manity, the Fall, the person and work of Christ, the Church, Holy Spirit and the End Times. The student will come to understand the role that councils and controversies played in the devel-‐opment of Chris2an theology and will interact with great Chris2an thinkers both past and present. The aim of these units is to enable students to understand and ar2culate a Chris2-‐an worldview.
Evangelism and Church Growth These topics are designed to help students ana-‐lyse the challenges faced by the church as it tries to reach out to this genera2on. They will look at a variety of evangelis2c methods as well as reflec2ng on the responsibility that each Chris2an has to witness. A focus on the specific issues of church plan2ng and church growth will be complimented by current thinking on how to develop a strategy for evangelism with the aim of improving ministry effec2veness.
Mission in Today’s World These topics will equip students to understand both the secular and religious challenges that Chris2ans have to face in today’s world. Acer an examina2on of the historical development of such belief systems, students will be taught how to respond biblically with a clear apologet-‐ic methodology that adds coherence to their defence of the gospel. Emphasis will be given to cross-‐cultural mission and the prac2cali2es of living in another culture. Lessons will be learned from the history of mission. The overall aim is to give students confidence and the ne-‐cessary equipment to minister in the ever-‐changing environment of today’s world.
Chris.an Service These topics deal with a wide range of issues connected with leadership, youth and children’s work as well as spiritual growth. Students will learn about best prac2ce in all of these areas and discover how to integrate these skills into the life of the local church. The specific issue of church leadership is dealt with by looking at different types of church government and draw-‐ing conclusions about which are the most ap-‐propriate. This is grounded in Scripture as stu-‐dents reflect on the biblical standards required for leadership. Students also look at the broad-‐er subject of ethics and consider a Chris2an response to current issues facing the Chris2an today. The aim of these units is to give students a grounding which will enable them to play a posi2ve leadership role in church and com-‐munity.
5
Team Evangelism Team Evangelism is designed to give the stu-‐dents an opportunity to work as part of a team involved in church plan2ng, evangelism and discipleship ministry. This real-‐life ministry ex-‐perience is usually located with churches at the front line of Chris2an outreach in the UK. While this experience should enable personal growth and development of ministry skills it has a par-‐2cular emphasis on community at work togeth-‐er. This topic complements the more individual-‐is2c nature of the Field term by providing a def-‐inite team context for the development of indi-‐vidual skills.
Cross-‐cultural Mission Trip The mission trip allows the student to under-‐take a week of Mission Experience with a mis-‐sionary team somewhere in Europe. The trip offers students a cross-‐cultural experience and first hand exposure to a mission situa2on. There is plenty opportunity to listen to and par-‐take in discussion regarding general and per-‐sonal issues faced by missionaries ‘on the field’. These missionaries themselves are at various stages of their mission involvement. Some are new-‐comers adjus2ng to the culture while oth-‐ers have long years of experience. During the 2me away, students are given orienta2on, meet local people, and visit important historical and cultural buildings around the area, as well as having involvement in some evangelis2c oppor-‐tuni2es alongside the missionaries.
Field Placement This is a period of four weeks in the academic year which are set aside for a personal prac2cal placement. Students are encouraged, with guidance and supervision from the college staff, to find some ministry opportunity that would help them explore God’s plan for their own fu-‐ture service or to beZer equip them in specific ministry skills.
TEFL Through Chris.an TEFL Online (which is accred-‐ited by the Accredita2on Council for Distance TESOL Educa2on) Tilsley is able to offer three TEFL op2ons to students on the first year pro-‐gramme. These op2ons allow for training in teaching English as a foreign language to TESOL Assistant, TESOL Associate Teacher or TESOL Accredited Teacher status depending on what the student chooses. More details are available from the college.

DIPLOMA IN BIBLICAL STUDIES AND CHRISTIAN MINISTRY
The Cer2ficate programme is a complete course in its own right but can also lead on to Tilsley’s second year Diploma programme. The Diploma programme offers biblical and theological studies as well as personal and min-‐isterial development which will be of benefit to anyone seeking to serve in a local church. The programme also provides a bridge into full-‐2me Chris2an ministry, both in the UK and abroad. It comprises a ministry placement in a church along with seven weeks of residen2al study at Tilsley College in Motherwell and a week’s Team Evangelism in a UK church. The church or mission placement component comprises 28 weeks of supervised training and ministry each week involving 20 hours of min-‐istry, of which at least 10 should be ‘contact’ hours.
The Tilsley College component of the pro-‐gramme comprises the following:
• Six weeks’ teaching • Two weeks in September • One week in November • One week in January • Two weeks in March
• Two ‘Reading’ Weeks in November and April/May
• One week’s Team Evangelism in Febru-‐ary
• Guest Week in June
Personal Mentoring One of the strengths of the year is the role of mentors who encourage both development of skills and spiritual growth. All students have a supervisor to help in developing their gics, and a spiritual mentor to encourage them in their personal walk with Christ, and to work through issues of guidance for future ministry.
