The Hot Seatby: Mrs. Jennifer Thompson

We certainly experienced the hot seat last week, didn’t we? I’m not sure about you, but when I got into my car at the end of the day, that black steering wheel was too hot to handle! It isn’t always comfortable when things get hot.

In chapel last week, I spoke to the elementary students about heat and how God sometimes puts a bit of heat on us through challenges and choices. It is how we respond to that heat that speaks a lot about who we are on the inside. (Ask your elementary child about popcorn.)

In fulfilling our mission to transform culture for Jesus Christ, we are learning that God uses the popcorn moments in our lives to grow as Christ followers. We will not always have smooth sailing, but when we can reflect Christ in times of stress, we are living examples of His love for us. The hard shell of the popcorn kernel explodes to white when heated up. May we do the same and gracefully show Jesus to others when those moments come. Attention future movie-makers! SJCS is hosting its very own film festival again this fall! We know that our students have great imaginations, critical eyes, and fantastic acting abilities, and we want to show them off! Therefore, on Friday, November 6, we will be hosting a film festival on the red carpet in our auditorium. We have the date, and we have some plans, but we need your movies!

Movie Requirements:

• Under 7 minutes (however, we expect that many will be much shorter than this)

• Submit to Ms. Diephouse (via Google Drive) by Monday, October 26.

• All unoriginal media must be Creative Commons Licensed “Free to Use, share, or modify”. Further, any sources must be cited in the credits.

• Must be rated G and suitable for all SJCS audiences.

• Choose any category you’d like! Categories to consider: English/Language Arts, Fine Arts, Foreign Language, History/Social Science, Independent Student Work, News Show, Mathematics, School Information, Physical Education, Special Education, Science and Health, Technical Arts, Thematic, Video Yearbook

How do I win?

Sick Policy Reminder: by Suzie Van Ewyk

A friendly reminder about our sick policy—Children who are absent due to sickness may not return to school until they have been symptom-free for 24 hours without medication. (In cases of infection, children may return to school 48 hours after the first dose of antibiotics.) This means that a child who leaves school in the middle of the day for sickness may not return the following day. This rule is for the health and safety of all our students and staff. Our handbook defines sickness as any of the following symptoms:

● Fever over 100 degrees F● Productive cough with yellow or green nasal discharge● Eyes that are red, swollen, crusting, or draining● Diarrhea, nausea, or vomiting● Head lice or nits (eggs)—please notify the office immediately● Childhood communicable disease—please notify the office immediately● Severe sore throat and/or headache

Preschool teachers do a visual screening when students arrive in the morning, and if a student exhibits any of the above symptoms, the preschool staff will notify the parents and request that the child be taken home. In doctor-confirmed cases of childhood communicable diseases, some bacterial infections and/or head lice, the preschool may be required to send home an exposure notice—and a doctor’s note will be required in order for

Androidify Yourselfby Jackie DenOuden

This year the 3rd graders are paired with 8th grade PE with Mr. Bost, and our first meeting was a huge success!

The 8th graders brought their laptops, and Mr. Bost and I asked them to lead an activity for the 3rd graders. When the 8th graders arrived, they helped the 3rd graders with a technology training project: an introduction to Google slides and creating an androidify character to insert into the slides. They had to use a hyperdoc (my first time using these) to find the instructions and what they were supposed to do. This is something the MS students have done before, but is new to my kiddos. 

It was great to see the students working together and interacting with their buddies. After they finished their slides, they went outside and played together at recess. The 8th grade students were a huge help to me as this was a challenging project for 3rd graders. I appreciated having the extra help during our technology training time. It’s going to be a great year for Buddies.
