Thurgoona Public School—Providing the foundation for life-long learning

This week Thurgoona Public school is taking part in the National Day of Action against Bullying and violence. The

day will be a culmination of lessons and activities across that school addressing this issue. On Monday 2 police

officers spoke to all students in Years 3-6 about Cyber bullying and our senior students will be taking part in a

video conference on Friday to learn more about this extremely important and relevant topic.

On Friday students are encouraged to wear orange as a reminder to stand up against bullying for a gold coin

donation.

For more information on our Anti-Bullying Policy please see the Wellbeing Policy and Procedures document,

sent home earlier this year. However, some information is below.

About Bullying….

Information supplied by the Alannah and Madeline foundation

‘It is difficult to find any universally accepted definition of bullying. We find the following definition helpful:

Bullying is a pattern of repeated physical, verbal, psychological or social aggression that is directed towards a

specific student by someone with more power and is intended to cause harm, distress and/or create fear.

Bullying may be carried out overtly (eg. face-to-face) or covertly (eg. through repeated social exclusion or via

technology). It is a sub-category of aggression and is different to, but also related to, harassment and violence. It

is not the same as conflict or social dislike even though, in some cases, the outcome of both can be bullying.

The different types of bullying

-Face-to-face bullying (sometimes referred to as direct bullying) involves physical actions such as punching or

kicking, or overt verbal actions such as name-calling and insulting.

-Covert bullying (sometimes referred to as indirect bullying) is a subtle type of non-physical bullying which isn’t

easily seen by others, is conducted out of sight, and is often unacknowledged by adults.

-Cyber bullying occurs through the use of information or communication technologies such as instant messages,

text messages, email and social networking sites. It has many similarities with offline bullying but it differs in

that the student(s) who is/are bullying can be anonymous, it can reach a wide audience and the sent or

uploaded material can be difficult to remove.

Most students who cyber bully also bully offline. It is now recognised that many forms of covert bullying appear

to have significant potential for serious harm.

Page 5: Thurgoona News · Thurgoona News. Excellence, innovation, opportunity-student success in a caring environment. ottlebrush Street, THURGOONA NSW 2640. Phone: 02 6043 1244 Fax: 02 6043

Thurgoona Public School—Providing the foundation for life-long learning

Another way of looking at it is:

When someone says or does something unintentionally hurtful and they do it once, that’s rude.

When someone says or does something intentionally hurtful and they do it once, that’s mean.

When someone says or does something intentionally hurtful and they keep doing it – even when you tell

them to stop or they see you are upset, that’s bullying.

(Ludwig, 2014)

Bullying is different from other forms of negative or distressing peer behavior such as one-off acts of meanness or

nastiness, conflict, one-off acts of rejection or exclusion, or random single incidents of physical or emotional

aggression. Many distressing behaviours are not examples of bullying, even though they are unpleasant and usually

require teacher intervention and management.

There are three socially unpleasant situations that are often confused with bullying:

Mutual conflict

In mutual conflict situations, there is an argument or disagreement between students, but not an imbalance of

power. Both parties are upset and usually want a resolution to the problem. However, unresolved mutual conflict

sometimes develops into a bullying situation, with one person becoming targeted repeatedly for ‘retaliation’ in a

one-sided way.

Social rejection or dislike

Unless the social rejection is directed towards someone specific and involves deliberate and repeated attempts to

cause distress, exclude or create dislike by others, it is not bullying.

Single-episode acts of nastiness or physical aggression are not the same as bullying. If a student is verbally abused

or pushed on one occasion, they are not being bullied. Nastiness or physical aggression that is directed towards

many different students is not the same as bullying.

If you feel you are being bullied you need to talk to someone you can trust, don’t put up with it or try to

fix it yourself.

Talk to teachers, parents, other family members, or supportive friends. Remember, it's not your fault

this is happening to you and you need adult help and support.

At Thurgoona Public School we have a School Psychologist who can be of assistance. Please feel free to

phone for an appointment or ask at the office.

Stage 3 Maths Class and Eddie Woo

On Friday, the students in Waratah Maths class were invited to attend a

presentation by Eddie Woo at James Fallon High School. Eddie is a

passionate Maths teacher and has been recognised many times for his

innovation in the teaching of maths. He was the winner of the NSW

Premier’s Prize for Innovation in Mathematics Education and the creator of

Wootube. In January this year, Eddie won the National Australia’s Local

Hero Award at the Australian of The Year Awards.

Our students were excited to attend with the secondary school students.

They listened attentively, took notes and played the games enthusiastically.

They were intrigued that mathematics came from a state of confusion and

questioning and that it was okay and desirable to be in this state because

this is where real learning would happen.

This was a great learning opportunity for our students.

Comments from the students who attended Eddie Woo’s presentation:

Toby: It was fun because I learnt that maths isn’t just explanation after explanation, but its about being confused, asking

questions, and finally understanding.

Bodhi: it was fun because I learnt that 2x2x2 is = to 3 to the power of 2

Paige: Eddie was so fascinating, I learned that a rectangle equals a right angle.

Lucas C.: At the Eddie Woo presentation, I learnt that Maths is exploration. When explorers explore maths, they often get lost.

That’s when they know they are in the right place.

Tarnee: I learnt that Maths is not a well-known highway; it’s more like a jungle where explorers often get lost. Eddie also

showed us Maths is more than numbers; its play, exploration and story.

Nicola: At the Eddie Woo presentation, I learnt that rectangles and squares are the same because rect-angle means right angle.

Olivia: I learnt that Maths is also play because we were playing a maths game – Four in a Row – and we didn’t realise it, but we

were also practising indices which was amazing because we learnt something new by playing a game.

Tilly: Maths isn’t just about numbers, equations or answers. It is exploration, play and story.

Caius: What interested me was that maths is a story. It is also play and exploration. I learnt that a rectangle is a right angle.

Jon: I found out that Eddie Woo is a pretty fun and creative person.

Joel: At the Eddie Woo presentation, I learnt there is a shorter way to multiply by saying 6 to the power of 5 instead of

6x6x6x6x6.

Samantha: I loved playing the games. My favourite game was the strategic tic-tac toe. I learnt that maths is play.

Ammar: I learnt that maths is fun, exploration and play. I also learnt about indices.

Seth: At the Eddie Woo presentation, I learnt that maths is play, exploration and it is a wonderful story. I found the mean

boxes game interesting. I loved the presentation. I thought it was going to be boring, when actually it was fun.

Liam: I learnt that maths is more than word problems and that it is also story, adventures and it is play.

Bryson: Although the whole experience was great, the thing that I learnt was maths is exploration with a quote; maths is a

jungle where even the greatest explorers get lost.

Jonas: It was fun and I learnt about indices whilst also having fun.

Chloe: “Maths isn’t just numbers; maths is story {as in history}; maths is exploration; maths is play.”

Hayden: From visiting Eddie Woo, I learnt how to average numbers and I found indices interesting.

Logan: When we were at Eddie Woo’s presentation, he taught us that maths could be a game by playing games and learning.

Hayley: Maths is games, exploration and reading.

Thomas: I learned about the power of 3, like 2³ which is 2x2x2 from Eddie Woo. It was very good because he explained that

maths is actually really fun, like play!

Lucas G.: Maths is an adventure and it can be learnt through games.

Lachlan: To find an average/mean, you need to add up the results and then divide it by the number of things that you did or

had.

Joshua: I learnt no matter how hard questions are they can always be turned into a game.

Taylah: When I was told we were going to be taught by Eddie Woo, I thought we were going to do boring maths but he taught

us that maths is play, story and exploration. He said that squares are also rectangles because ‘rect’ means to rectify and make

right so a rectangle is like a square. I had lots of fun.
