Teams are required to work together on a Long Term Challenge for six weeks without assistance from teachers, parents or peers. They are encouraged to explore possibilities and experiment with ideas as they endeavor to produce their best possible solution. They develop a creative and original way to communicate this solution to others, working within predefined parameters such as limited materials, complex challenge criteria and the deadline of Tournament Day. The teams must also participate in an unseen Spontaneous Challenge on Tournament Day. This challenge requires rapid interchange of ideas, the ability to think creatively and well developed group cooperation skills. Last Saturday both TOM teams participated in the Riverina finals in Wagga. The teams won their categories and will compete in the State final in Sydney on Sunday, 15 September at the University of NSW. This is an outstanding achievement and I congratulate all students for their commitment to TOM. Mrs Ward must be recognised for providing extensive additional learning opportunities for the students after school and during the weekend to prepare them for the TOM finals. Providing the foundations for life-long learning

Principal’s Message

Congratulations Tournament of the Minds Teams

Tournament of the Minds (TOM) is an opportunity for students with

a passion for learning and problem solving to demonstrate their

skills and talents in an exciting, vibrant and public way. Teams are

required to work together on a Long Term Challenge for six weeks

without assistance from teachers, parents or peers. They are

encouraged to explore possibilities and experiment with ideas as

they endeavor to produce their best possible solution. They develop

a creative and original way to communicate this solution to others,

working within predefined parameters such as limited materials,

complex challenge criteria and the deadline of Tournament Day.

The teams must also participate in an unseen Spontaneous

Challenge on Tournament Day. This challenge requires rapid

interchange of ideas, the ability to think creatively and well

developed group cooperation skills.

Last Saturday both TOM teams participated in the Riverina finals in

Wagga. The teams won their categories and will compete in the

State final in Sydney on Sunday, 15 September at the University of

NSW. This is an outstanding achievement and I congratulate all

students for their commitment to TOM. Mrs Ward must be

recognised for providing extensive additional learning opportunities

for the students after school and during the weekend to prepare

them for the TOM finals.

Revised Enrolment Policy

The enrolment policy communicates a transparent enrolment

process to staff and the community. The policy was revised and is

designed for schools to manage all enrolment applications, encourage greater consistency in decision-

making and make sure the enrolment choices are clear for parents. ALL students living within the

Thurgoona Public School zone are eligible to enrol at Thurgoona Public School.

An Enrolment Policy information pamphlet has been attached to this newsletter.

Shining a light on K-2

Book Week

Wow! What an amazing sight it was on Wednesday to see so many staff and students come dressed as

their favourite book characters.

Thank you to Mrs Peachey and Mrs Nicholls for their organisation of our parade and for the Book Fair

stall. A big thank you must also go to all the students and their families for their support and effort to

make our Book Parade such a success.

Book Week is an important reminder of how much enjoyment and knowledge we gain from reading

books, which is especially valuable in this digital age.

If you would like to find our more about how to best support your child(ren) to read at home, check out

the department’s website for parent tips at: https://schoolsequella.det.nsw.edu.au/file/1c9d5c6a-8126-

Happy reading everyone!

Year 3 Camp – We’re going to

The Great Aussie Holiday Park!

Not long to wait now (only 2 weeks in fact) until

we head off on the bus to The Great Aussie

Holiday Park!

We are all so very excited about the many fun

activities we will enjoy and the great times we

will have with each other.

We are, however, aware that this may be the

first overnight camp experience for your child,

so please take the time to talk to your child

about it. They may have concerns about camp

but try to emphasise the positives and all of the

fun they will have! Explore options and coping

strategies they may use should they have any

anxieties (i.e. home sickness) and make a

concerted effort to emphasise that they can

overcome any obstacles they may face if they

are resilient.

Further suggestions include sleep overs at

friends, other relatives or family members’

houses to support and assist in preparing your

child and their night away from their immediate

loved ones.

Below is the link for The Great Aussie Holiday

Park, if you would like to have a look at the

camp facilities.

and fun way.

We look forward to meeting Helen and her dog,

Milo soon!

Thurgoona Public School is entering a team in this year’s

Relay for Life — The ‘Thurgoona Troopers’. More information
