    EDITORIAL

Here is the first issue of this new magazine. Actually the Frugalware newsletter is nolonger active since its maintainer is busy in real life. I've decided to make somethingnew, something attractive, nice to read... A magazine is a good idea, you can downloadit and read it later. The first format is PDF so it can be read on every OS and also ontablet.

I chose the name "The Seldon Plan" to still continue the "Asimov's Foundation style" wealready have with the Frugalware release codenames :)

I hope you'll enjoy this magazine. Of course, to exist this magazine needscontributions, so, if you want to participate, read the last page and contact us :)

    Frugalware 1.6 (Fermus) released

After 6 months ofwork, The FrugalwareDevelopment teamhas released thesixteenth stableversion of FrugalwareAKA Fermus.

The most important changes since 1.5 in no particular order:

    - Updated packages: Linux kernel 3.1.10, XOrg server 1.11.2, GNOME 3.2,

KDE SC 4.7, LibreOffice 3.4.5.2, Mozilla Firefox 10.0 to name a few major

    components.

    - i686 and x86_64 ISOs are now hybrid. We no longer build separate USB

    images for these arches.

    - cpupower can be used to configure your CPU power management, and

is now our recommended method for doing so.

    - UEFI/EFI support has been removed from i686. This is because it is rare

    on i686.

    - UUIDs are now used by the installer when generating the /etc/fstab for

    new installs.

    - fw32, which maintains an i686 chroot on x86_64, is now more matureand usable. If you find it lacking, make a request.

    - HAL has been deprecated in favor of udisks

    - i686 and x86_64 now use an initrd. See installation documentation for

instructions on how to properly upgrade this.- Cinnamon desktop is included now.

But the real improvement is FWLive, indeed, there are now some live CD

ISO images. If you want to just try Frugalware without installing it, testthe live CD !

    FERMUS REVIEWED BY DISTROWATCH !

    Frugalware Linux is present in

    DistroWatch Weekly, Issue 446,

of 5th March 2012. The test has

    been done, without doubt,

because we now provide a live

CD. If you see the comments,

sme work has to be done, the

GUI Installer is still buggy. Don't

foget to fill bug report and/orask for a feature request on

    Last Minute News

    Frugalware 1.7 codename is Gaia

The codename of Frugalware 1.7 has beenchosen, its Gaia, planet name from IsaacAsimov s Fondation series books.

"Gaia is located in the Sayshell Sector, aboutten parsecs (32 light-years) from Sayshell. It isfeatured prominently in Foundation and Earth. It is the origin world of the planetary

    intelligence known as Gaia." (Wikipedia).

    Cinnamon now on Frugalware

Yeah, after Fedora, Arch, Ubuntu andOpenSuse, the Gnome-shell fork by and forLinux-Mint is now available on Frugalware.

    Bye bye GRUB 1, Hello GRUB2 2

Ryuo has replaced GRUB 1 in current by theversion 2. Don't worry, you will not lose yourGRUB menu after reboot, the GRUB legacy isstill enabled before you finalize the transition,so please, read carefully the GRUB 2 section ofthe howto Upgrade :)

A Welcome session sound soon ?

Colby Stratton, executive producer andchairman of the board of Psych Ward MediaLLC want to contribute to Frugalware byproducing a sound theme, wait and see...

    New rule ?

Ryuo has suggested a new rule: "Afterdifficulties we had during 1.6 release cycle, Iam proposing a rule addition. In addition tothe freeze we do from rc2 -> stable,I am proposing we do a new feature andmajor bump freeze on everything that is notin a -extra group as its main group after weare past the pre2 release of a release cycle. The way I feel is, major changes in the maingroups should be implemented by the

time we have pre2 released. This gives us a 2month period instead of a mere two weeksto resolve outstanding issues with themain branch. I don't wish to apply this toanything in extra, as that has few importantpackages, and is way too massive for usto do any real quality control on."

The debate still continues on the mailing-list.

Gnome 3.4... A great version is approaching

This article is about version 3.3.90 of GNOME. Before starting, let's explain the versionnumbering of a development version.

The development of a stable version take 6 months. I wrote this article on the 5th March2012, when version 3.3.91 arrive slowly in GNOME repositories.

During this period, 5 alpha version (versions finishing from .1 to .5) are released. Laterthere are beta 2 versions (.90 and .91). Later again there is the Release Candidate

finishing by .95. End of the explanation.

These screenshots have been taken with 3.3.90, in other term beta 1.

First of all, special thanks to Baste, for his work, he packaged by himself this develversion of GNOME.

To "play" with the development version (which is obviously not certified stable), you needto use the current tree of Frugalware Linux, and to add the following lines before currentin /etc/pacman-g2.conf :

    [gnometesting]Server = http://ftp.frugalware.org/pub/other/people/bouleetbil/gnometesting/

Then, perform an upgrade with pacman-g2 -Syu to upgrade your version of GNOME, bepatient ,finally log and in again to get the new version of GNOME.

I used the "official" theme of GNOME instead of the one of Frugalware, to avoid possiblebugs.

In this article we'll focus on new main features and applications incoming with thisversion of GNOME. A lot of work have been done about the graphic part between 3.0and 3.2. The version 3.4 continue in that way. Here are, in my humble opinion, thechanges and applications which make this version of GNOME more comfortable to use..

Let's start with a new option from System Settings, the one who force the user to get offthe keyboard and the screen. And to force the geeks to be more sociable ? :)

Another new nice improvement, or evolution of the file manager Nautilus, the possibilityto cancel or redo an action.

We still continue with application improvements, the one for online accounts has beenenhanced in addition to Google accounts, we can now add accounts from Twitter, fromYahoo and, for masochists, from Windows Live :D

At last, the big improvement is GNOME Boxes. This application is like the answer fromthe community to VirtualBox.

With it you can easily create virtual machines based on Qemu. I wanted to show a testwith the LiveCD of frugalware running in a virtual machine, but Qemu can't be launchedinside itself. Boring:(

On the first screenshot, you can see the drop-down menu which is being progressivelyadded to all GNOME applications, and appears when you click on one application fromthe top panel bar.

To conclude this article, we can tell GNOME 3.4 continues the good work started withGNOME 3.2, and this version will be positively appreciated by users.
